Gary Neal Hansen has done it again--he's taken a huge topic and distilled it into something manageable.
In Kneeling with Giants, he took our hand and showed us, step-by-step, how to structure our prayer lives in such a way that it's spiritually nourishing. Now, with Your First Sermon, he's taken the art of writing a sermon and showed us how to paint every stroke.
I don't want to give away any of his secrets, but his five-step process will get anyone preaching within one week. And, for the experienced preacher, his process services as a good reminder of what a good sermon does and, perhaps, a fresh way to structure what we say.
You also don't find many authors who highly encourage their readers to email them after they've read the book. Gary generally wants to know how those first preachers did. He also offers some other tools to help you on your way on his website, and there's a bonus chapter. You just can't go wrong with this helpful book.
This is a good solid book of practical information for beginning preachers. It gives step-by-step instructions on how to study, prepare, write, and preach a sermon. My method is slightly different from Hansen's, but only slightly, and it has evolved with time and experience. But it's important to have a method for preparation and a structure for the sermon itself, otherwise you're just somebody yacking in the pulpit and not a preacher. Hansen provides a method that anyone who is called to preach can start with and build on.
