This is exactly what I was in the mood for. It's not perfect, but I am still going to give it 5 stars because it was an enjoyable ride for sure.

Season 1 of Reality Bleed is Aliens (1986) and Dead Space having a baby and wrapping that baby into John Carpenter's The Thing blanket.
And no, I am not going to say DOOM, because this is a story about normal people stuck in a terrible situation. There is no DOOM Slayer here.

I do have a few nitpicks, one is the constant change in how people are addressed. Sometimes by their first name and then suddenly and randomly by their last name. It made it very confusing for a long time to figure out who is who. It also doesn't help that the cast is massive in this boxset, which thankfully gets resolved later on when people start to die rapidly.

The second nitpick is that people here are simply... dumb. Listen, I understand that if they didn't make stupid decisions at every turn the book wouldn't exist. And yes I am aware that they are not a military unit. They are just a group of people doing a cargo job that went terribly, terribly wrong. But damn it can be really annoying how most of them make the worst possible choices. Take Tommy for example. He risks everyone and everything throughout the entire Season just so that he can get some coochie. And his quest for coochie pretty much keeps him alive while everyone around him dies. Brother you all have more important things to worry about in this situation.

But yeah, those are just two "minor" nitpicks. The boxset is still a 5/5 from me. The creatures are fun, the setting is engaging, the atmosphere is oozing, the action sequences are over the top and gory.

I will pick up the second boxset even though it, based on the description, sounds like a completely different genre? It seems to be a political drama set on Earth instead. Not really what I want, but I'll still give it a shot.

Also, I would LOVE to see this adapted into a movie or a TV show. If done properly I am sure it'd become very popular.

A half decent sci-fi horror story told in four instalments. Now I am a horror story reader who enjoys a decent horror book but I would have hated to have to read this series as four small stories. I was glad to have it in an omnibus format giving me all four stories in one. I’ve read a number of series like this and I’ve always found them frustrating because they never really reach their conclusion. At least this one did and left the door open for more to come. Decent characters and plot, this brought my score up from the 2 stars that, if in separate books, the story would have gotten from me. The four story omnibus receives 3 stars, a good listen.

Set in a contemporary setting where cold war didn't end. The communist pestilence, red nomenklatura continue to rule over masses in USSR. On Mars scientific research base allied scientists mistakenly think they are on the verge of a discovery that could swing the power balance in their favor. Building a device they barely understand. As the gate opens on it's own, the reality bleed allows creatures through. After Mars base has gone silent. Fastest available on hand space ship, a squad of space force logistics, is sent to investigate. Constantly on edge, underinformed, underqualified and undermanned. What they encounter horrifies them. No matter how much reserves of the reserves they are all space force military are infantrymen first. Good soldiers follow orders.

Love the setting. The author's choice to include the horror's perspective makes them surprisingly human. As monstrous as hive mind world devouring cancer-like in it's adaptivity predator thing can be. If one were to be communicated by god who wouldn't wish to follow it's voice and devote their being to please it, if not to experience it's communication again.

The von Braum is amazing anti-hero/dark hero/sociopath. Reminds me a lot about main protagonist - Dr. Riley - from M.R. Forbes "The Forgotten" series. Both, unapologetic meritocrats for whom the end justifies the means. Von Braum doing what von Braum does, making cold decisions based on facts and highest probability to achieve the goal - consequentialism. Space force gofers are pushed onward by moral obligation and sworn duty - deontology. But Dr. Braum is tired. While Perihelion's crew had time to acclimatize after cryosleep and a moment of bliss with Perihelion taking off Felicity station, Braum hasn't had that luxury. The environment is demanding and without an environmental suit for half the duration and no CAG at all, he is primed to make a decisive mistake.

Conclusion: 4/5. Listened on Audible included in plus catalogue, bought for re-listening for 1 credit. Narrated by: Tom Taylorson. Audible sells Reality Bleed: Season 1 (book 1 - 4), for one credit, the length of the book and the quality of the story, an amazing purchase. Author understands the red tide and the danger to the good and worthwhile values protecting which cold war was about.
"We heard a knock!" says the person with eyes shining the glint of innocence and excitement. And the loop begins anew. What a way to finish season 1. World needs more men like Alice Winter's father (God knows we don't deserve more men like Dr. Braun). "The world is a horrible place! A shithole!", "The world is a terrible place... There is going to come a time in your life when you don't have any good options. Where anything you do makes you hurt. But you decide what's right." Terrible value for the length of the book - 2.03 $/hour ( 34.99 $ / 17 hrs 14 mins ).

Values:
Terrible: >1.66 $/hour
Bad: 1 - 1.66 $/hour
