Elämäni pohjalla: Yksinäisen aksolotlin tarina

Rate this book
Joka vuosi useita lajeja kuolee sukupuuttoon. Täydelliset olennot, miljoonien vuosien evoluution tulokset, lakkaavat olemasta. LINDA BONDESTAM (s. 1977) on kuvittanut kymmeniä rakastettuja kirjoja.

If, like me, the only solace you can take in the impending climate apocalypse is that, though we humans may kill off our own species, some life on earth will survive: this book is for you. I'm not overly fond of Linda Bondestam's art style, but I enjoyed all the weird details of her cityscape and lake trash.

A wonderful story that can be expanded for a few different themes including climate change, evolution, and animal science. The artwork is gorgeous! Not one I would read for storytime for younger kids as some pages are a bit more wordy but my 2nd graders loved it.

Who knew! This axolotl can casually have more babies at one time than there were kids in my high school class

very cute illustrations but the moral of the story isn’t obvious enough for kids to understand. hard to explain what happened to kids. although from an adult’s perspective it’s a hauntingly beautiful story.

Yo: Five stars. The art is incredible, and the message will come across as subtle to a 2nd grader... But the adults watching the world burn. Oh, we know what you're getting at, Linda Bondestam. We know. We feel that heat, too.

What is the fascination among people these days of killing off all humanity? A kids book? This is more crazy propaganda. I’m so sick of it.

A little axolotl, living at the bottom of a murky lake, narrates a story about love and pollution. At first the axolotl finds plenty to eat, and enjoys friendships with fish, tiger salamanders, and snails. They pass the time playing, going to school, and finding treasures – garbage and lost items that the “big lugs” pollute the water with. But, as more and more pollution muddies the water, there are fewer and fewer of his friends left. Axoltl is lonesome. One day there is a catastrophe – the waters explode, and the earth is flooded. When the catastrophe is over, there is another axolotl! They become friends, and eventually they are parents to 987 little axolotls! His life at the bottom “had become the tops!”

Bondestam’s signature wry humor and quirky art are on display in this longer picture book which reads like a tongue in cheek memoir. It’s also a cautionary tale about how human pollution can affect even the hardiest little creatures. Readers will learn a bit about axolotls (they can regenerate limbs!) and get a sense of how our life styles – fast food, phones, inattention to the life around us – can impact other species. The mixed media art – pen and ink, collage and more – has so much fun detail. Little readers and their parents will enjoy cataloguing the many ‘treasures’ that the little axolotl finds, especially when he finds a smartphone and delights in watching videos online.

I liked the front and end quotations. The quotation at the beginning is from Michael Collins, an Apollo 11 astronaut, which mentions how fragile earth seemed from space. At the end, NASA astronaut Ed Lu’s quotation talks about how robust life on Earth seems to him! Kids and their parents can talk about which view they agree with.

What a lovely book, with beautiful, arresting illustrations and an important message that the author/illustrator conveys with elan. Also impressive are the two bookend quotations from astronauts, the first being impressed with the apparent fragility of earth and the second being impressed with its life imperative.

That brought to mind Robert Frost's comment on his 80th birthday, "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."

I also enjoyed the humor, especially RUMP TOWER.

Levenger Foundation is sponsoring a bilingual, English-Spanish edition for 2026.
I can see it will be challenging to make this bilingual. For one, there is a lot of text on some spreads. For another, the language at times is not straightforward. But I'm sure Restless will work it into something marvelous.

Featured in a grandma reads session. . .

As we launched into this read, my grandson and I, he enjoyed correcting my pronunciation of this creature's name which kept snaking out of my mouth incorrectly - it was silly and fun. As we followed Axolotl's path in life - encumbered about by the litter, debris and garbage of the Big Lugs (guess who they are???) the story grows deep and somber, and then *BOOM* we are in a dystopian Picture book! My first ever!

Stuff happens, the Big Lugs are no more and Axolotl finally meets a partner, and before you know it 987 new family members change the rest of their lives.

It really was a charming read, if not a little chiding. We both made a pact to clean up our acts and environments, to help the Axolotls in our worlds.

This book can be read on a couple of different levels. This is the story of an axolotl that I purchased after I saw how obsessed some second graders were with Dewdrop by Katie O'Neill. This story is not like Dewdrop at all. It is charming with an environmental message that some readers might miss but is definitely there. It is important to look at the pictures which contain dry-witted critiques of humans and their treatment of the ocean. It may be the pictures that get kids asking questions about the environmental aspects. Katie O'Neill's axolotl is cuter but this axolotl story has heart.

I was very impressed by this extremely cool book with its unique illustration style and formatting that I've never seen before in picture books. It combines a gorgeous painterly style with animation-like illustrations that grab the eye. I was surprised by the amount of text in this children's book, but I believe that it's written in a way that will spark the reader's/listener's attention from toddler on up to adult. The translator, A. A. Prime, did a wonderful job translating the work from Swedish to English. I'm looking forward to seeing more Linda Bondestam books translated into English!

Challenge: Non-fiction November 2022 - Element (of nature). Even though this book is classified as fiction, it contains much factual information about this unique little salamander that can be found only in a few lakes in Mexico. Becoming very rare, this fact translates into the life of a very lonely little axolotl whose world changes drastically due to a cataclysm that reinvents life on earth drastically. Much can come once someone like the axolotl is found to share life with, no longer alone. Translated from the Swedish with lovely illustrations by the author.

Cute little story of an Axolotl, who is the only one of the eggs laid to hatch. He makes friends with some of the sea creatures around him, but as they grow and leave, he becomes lonely.

I enjoyed the imagination that went into this book (especially watching the movies on the cell phones underwater), and his eventual finding of a friend after a wave washes him into a new body of water.

Great book!
