Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA. She nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!).

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana but has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

It felt like old KA. In fact, it reminded me of The Will...

Oh, I don't know, maybe my longer KA break did the trick... or my romance break in general. Or maybe I was just in need of a comfy read during these turbulent times.
Uncomplicated, comprehensible sentences and reasonable book length definitely helped.

Anyhow, I'm so looking forward to the next in the series.

Lol, I can tell you for a fact no 20-year old says "rad". Not to say 20-year-olds can’t, but the daughter of a popular actress saying that is hilarious. If you are a big fan of KA, this is very much her usual style which includes drama, family, an evil guy, an ex and a whole load of the annoying alpha male.

One thing I have realized, I have grown out of KA. I am not obsessed with fashion, not to say I don’t like fancy stuff, I do but it’s not a priority for me but almost all of her heroines are into brands and high fashion stuff and it’s always talked about in detail. And what’s even funnier, it's written in the male POV: the very specific details about the outfit of the heroine, I think most men would not notice these things, they will notice if you aren’t wearing any clothes not what kind of clothes you are wearing LOL.

Anywho I read this cause of the free time I have and I lowkey regret it. But this reminds me of her earlier works so if you like those please go ahead.

Also, I’ve been waiting to read Vicious Minds part 2, and I like those kinds of heroines so hence my harsh review.

This FREE treat from KA was a nice surprise at a time I couldn't settle on anything to read. I jumped on the opportunity to read it on release day and it was entertaining up to a point.
Full disclosure, I haven't been able to connect with the latest releases from this author so I was a little bit on the fence about "After The Climb" upon starting it.

The book starts with a huge conflict and a premise promising the be an angsty second chance at love. The characters and the writing gave me vibes of vintage KA and I thought I was in for a treat... until the conflict expeditiously died down into a sea of inconsequential mundane scenes. Not heartache, no struggles —other than the heroine picking her outfits— nothing happening really. "After The Climb" is a sweet story about two mature characters reuniting after a 28 years break and I believe a compelling intro to KA newest series.

Come to think of it, I've felt more invested in what was going on with the MCs' kids (all in their 20s or so and from different marriages) and in hindsight the book is probably meant to be just that, an intro to younger characters of what could be becoming a winning series.
As such, I particularly enjoyed the dynamics between both characters's families, I'm looking forward to read about Gage and Sully.

I know the extravagant Chloe is set to be the next book in the series but I'm likely to skip this one because the author has her speaking French in this story and it annoyed me to no end. —#RantON—Not only the French was off grammaticaly (#ISpeakFrenchFries is a pet peeve of mine, if you don't speak fluently French, I'm sure you won't notice or get my annoyance) but it also made the character look silly. So ridiculous. I wish authors would skip foreign languages in their books or use a fluent/native speaker to help.—#rantOFF—

Alas, as sweet as it was I needed more happening between the heroine and hero than this succession of "TALKS" they were set to have throughout the book. Between the very important "talks", the pages of furniture, appliances descriptions and Imogen self imposed inner monologues surely there was room for something substancial to happen to both heroes? Anything.

The usual suspects were definitely present:
-Outfits descriptions
-brands/labels advertising
-HGTV portions of the book,
-heroine inner monologues
-foodporn
-"you with me babe" talk
-obnoxious best friends

All in all it was sweet and reminescent of the author's early works but the plot undeniably missed some punch and focus on the main characters for After The Climb to be a winner for me.
Between 2 and 3 stars for me.

After the Climb is a second chance romance where the couple has almost a 30 year separation. Both of them are now divorced and find out the thing that tore them apart all those years ago was a lie and decide to move on with life together. This was a sweet read and fairly low drama, aside from the basis of their breakup.

I struggled with how to rate this, because Duncan and Imogen’s story was more of a 2.5-3 for me but all the family dynamics and the kids was more of a 4-4.5. The romance in this wasn’t my absolute favorite, but I love KA’s writing and this one had more of her old school feels. I’m excited for more from this series because I truly loved the kids and the family they all made together. I think Chloe’s book is next and I’m here for it!

First thing is at the time I write this review this book is free.

It is a gift from the author to her readers as the world deals with Covid-19.

It can be downloaded here https://www.kristenashley.net/titles/...

It is a second chance romance.
It starts with the heroine going to visit the Hero on request of last wishes of a friend who committed suicide.
The instructions are for them to open a box together and read the letter together.

The letter explains that the dead friend had plotted to part them when they were together and lied that the heroine cheated.

In KA books esp in her early ones, usually the Hero will be unkind or even extremely cruel to the heroine for a few chapters then realise he has misunderstood a situation or is just flat out wrong and then decide to go for a future with her and win her back.

In this book within a chapter and a half maybe he sees the error of his ways.

What gets me is, does the actions of a man when he thinks you've crossed him reveal a side of his personality that would make someone cautious to get involved with them?
He has cut her off for 28 years, wouldn't listen to her pleadings and denials and when she arrives before discovering the contents of the letter is visibly cold to her and as soon as he realises he instantly changes.
I find this behaviour worrysome.
I'm not saying if you believed a girl/boy friend cheated you don't have the right to be hurt etc but it's the change in demeanor without fully being able to deal with the situation in the first place.
Let's hope she doesn't upset him again in the future!!

Also his actions are sort of excused as it's said and they both agree that they were too young anyway for that big a love and if that hadn't broken them up then them pursuing their careers etc would have.
This is infuriating.
It would have been very different to have an amicable break up or to drift apart than have a boyfriend treat you the way the Hero treats this heroine.
He was brutal in his believing his friend over her.
So much so neither of them got over it, so how is it okay?

There were endless descriptions of the cabin, the Hero built.
The author is a fan of Yellowstone TV show and she even mentions it but we get several accounts of decor, types of wood, wall hangings etc.....

The daughter of the heroine has been in France for a time so we get the constant french expressions......

The animals I think at times had more of a plot than the main characters.
Her cat is transported from her home and lives happily in a hotel room, my cat would never put up with this.

They are endlessly rich, her a movie star, he's a business man.
So is champagne and spa treatments, fancy outfits and labelled clothing and shoes.... Did I mention the cabin from Yellowstone?

Too much.

The story had potential but it seemed as if there would be angst then it was resolved before it even really began.
There were exes on both sides but everyone was happy, kids on both sides and all celebrating Xmas together.
Come back the days when we had a good old bitchy ex causing all sorts of havoc.

There were no intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.

During separation they were both married, had children divorced and dated in-between.

It was okay but it felt like a bit of a hard slog after 40%.
I skipped the endless descriptions, so boring.
And I couldn't wait for it to end.
Thank goodness it was free.

There are endless secondary characters introduced for future books in series which the author may or may not write if she doesn't get distracted by something else.

HEA.
Let's hope she doesn't upset him and he doesn't refuse to listen and shut her out again. He had his reasons but still.....

Next book is the daughter, Chloe.
She has already got on my nerves.
Super high maintenance. Needs a good slap.

* * * * Spoiler Free A Quick Review
Saying I am going to do a Quick Review and tie that to Kristen Ashley probably had people falling off their chairs howling. My gift of Comic Relief during these crazy times. Seriously, I will try to make it short.

This story was about three people who had a lifetime of history and because of what seemed to be unthinkable, a wedge was driven between two of them who had a love all of us would want to have.
It is through a lot of manipulation, confrontation, and then a willingness to deal with the outcome that allows the main couple to see if they can take that important step toward their true happy ending.

KA started this with her fans and has presented it as a gift. I think it was more than a gift just for us because this book feels like the KA from old. I think it was a hard look and an understanding for KA as to what is important in her crafting.

It also gave us GROWN-UP PEOPLE! Yes, they have grown children, the characters have success, past relationships, and have learned life lessons making them wise and smarter than they were.

So enjoy this gift from KA because I think her fans directed her to focus on the important stuff.

Well the good thing that came out of this was that I didn’t had to pay. It was free on KA website.
28 years separation where the asshole hero believed their best friend when he told him that the love of his life aka the pathetic heroine cheated on him with him. He believed his friend instead of his girlfriend whom he said he loved? She said that begged him to listen to her, she groveled (idk why when she wasn’t the one who did wrong) and then they read a letter from said betrayer saying how he lied because he was in love with her and he knows that hero was going to believe him instead of the heroine and now 28 years later, hero wants her back like nothing has happened?
Thank god she wasn’t celibate these 28 years. She went on and married a guy and had 3 kids but her husband wasn’t also a good husband either. So it’s a moot point having her moving on.
And her daughter ordering the ass to make a play at her mom. What kind of a daughter would want her mother to be with a man who doesn’t believe when she said she hasn’t done what she’s being accused of? This daughter doesn’t have any love for her mother because if she did she would tell her mother to never forgive the asshat.

At this point I’m not interested in finishing it. I thought since it was a new series that it was going to be different from her other books but I was wrong. Nothing new here. Same old, same old.

28 years!? And not a sorry, or not enough groveling.

"Oh, so you really didn't cheat. You really weren't lying. Well, I didn't listen or fought for you. Made a life with someone else when you were the love of my life. But, yea, let's give it another go."

NO, buddy. It' just wayyy too late. Decades late. I can't comprehend how any woman would forgive this so easily.

***Spoilers***

The (second chance) romance was nothing to write home about, but the history shared among the Three Amigos (Duncan (H), Imogen (h), and Corey) was most fascinating. It involved an unusual friendship, a love triangle, secrets & lies & betrayals, a suicide (note), and a reunion of soulmates who had been forcibly separated for almost THIRTY years.

Corey was an interesting, complex character. He was very peculiar, and I couldn’t tell if he was a sociopath or not. I wanted to begrudge him for ruining the friendship and breaking Duncan & Imogen apart, but he made it hard to hate him because—despite his flaws & mistakes—he was also the kind of person who went above & beyond to take care of the people he loved. He was the cause of Duncan & Imogen’s break up, but he was also the one who brought them back together. Not to mention, during the years while they were separated, both Duncan and Imogen had led a good life (marriage/family & career wise). The same can’t be said about Corey. He was a successful businessman but a lonely, tortured individual. My heart breaks for him.

Duncan & Imogen went their separate ways when they were in their early 20s, and they were reunited in their 50s. Aside from Corey and his meddling, their reunion also wouldn’t have been possible if Imogen’s marriage hadn’t ended. Duncan had been divorced for two years and Imogen two months (I think) when they had their second chance. In my opinion, it was way too soon for Imogen to be in a new relationship considering how much she’d loved Tom, her ex husband (though not as much as she did Duncan obviously). I mean, to come to terms with Tom’s indiscretion (he cheated), their 25+ year marriage ending, and all the revelations from Corey... there was so much to unpack. It seemed far-fetched that she could do it while falling (back) in love with Duncan.

Their romance just felt contrived and convenient, and the way it unfolded was simply through Duncan & Imogen having a lot of sharing and catching up, and a lot of exchanged introductions among the children from their previous marriages. There wasn’t (enough) sparks or chemistry even though their love was supposed to be epic. It was like they just agreed to be in love again cause now they were both single (and old) and there were no more obstacles. The way Duncan & Imogen were with each other felt like they loved each other but they weren’t really in love? Idk, on the one hand: the romance was nothing special; the love & fondness was there, but the passion felt dimmed; and their reunion felt rushed. On the other hand: their relationship was heartwarming and just... made sense.

I’ve noticed that this is how KA tend to write her romance books when they’re about older couples. It’s like the importance is not just on the love story between the couple, but she put more emphasis on the family dynamics. She’s not just bringing two people together but also merging two families—which was what happened here. They also tend to be less steamy. I enjoyed reading about the kids, and I’m excited to read their books. Sully & Gage (Duncan’s) were hilarious. Chloe (Imogen’s) was a little annoying, but I also kinda liked her. And Sasha (Imogen’s) I feel like I could resonate with her. I’m most intrigued by Hale (Corey’s). Tom & Duncan developed a friendship, which was weird but whatever.

When it comes down to it, this prequel was... good, but meh? It felt more... familial than anything you’d expect in a romance, which was fine. It could’ve had a more emotional impact, but it didn’t carry. Anyway, if you plan to read this, make sure to get the extended edition because I listened to the audiobook and it didn’t include Corey’s chapters.

Spoilers ahead 2.5* (without the kids it'd be 1)

While I appreciated this freebie from KA during these difficult times I'm sooooooo over her ridiculous long separations for the most silly of reasons! 28 YEARS??????????

H/h were together in high school, broke up and got back together a few years later. They then had a final break up shortly after when the H took their friend's word over the h's and left her
28 years later that friend committed suicide and leaves a package behind admitting his deception which led to their breakup. The H immediately thinks something can happen between them because they're both single, the h takes a little convincing and off they go on the road go their HEA
I enjoyed the kids and the interactions as the family's blend, and I'm really interested in the future books in this series hopefully without what seems to be KA's signature nonsensical separations
I disliked the H's and even Sully's reaction to aspects of the h's fame
Every single word, gesture, reaction and description was typical KA

No cheating
Second chance or third chance really
Both with others during all the separations including being married and divorced with grown kids
h's ex and her were friends, H's ex and him were not

******hopefully Judge won't have sex with anyone else since he's met Chloe (fingers crossed)

Y'all. Yikes.
I admire the author for the clever idea of enlisting fans on her Facebook page to help her write this story. Helping people feel connected in a difficult time is a beautiful thing.
However.
This story read like a disjointed hot mess.
A hot mess complete with an excess of description of outfits and decor. Too many characters with too little development.
Loved the initial idea, couldn't see the point of the end result.

Note to authors*: If you include another language, please, I beg you, use it correctly.

*This isn't the first time this particular author has given me a linguistic twitch. It is no comfort that it was French instead of the more common abuse of Spanish.

Overall Opinion: I think Ms. Ashley is the queen of the side character and interactions with mc’s kids, and this is a great example of it! The only issue is that there wasn’t much more to the book than that — great side characters/mc children interactions. I never really connected to either mc and I felt like I was just constantly told about their connection to each other rather than feeling it myself. I can’t believe I’m saying this, because come on — this is KA, but it was too short! It ended at page 239 in my kindle app! I had no idea going in, and that’s probably a good thing because I typically try to steer away from books below 300 pages. I tend to have troubles connecting if it feels too short and underdeveloped, and sadly that happens here. The epilogue was great but without what I consider a HEA. Overall, just meh.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Genny and Bowie’s story. They meet again after ~28 years after breaking up when their friend dies and asks them to open something together. Their world gets turned upside down after a big secret is revealed and they end up starting up their romance again. There is some drama from the dead friend, some merging of families, and a few sexy times...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Imogen’s POV and 3rd person narrative focusing on other characters (mostly Bowie).

Overall Pace of Story: Alright. I never skimmed.

Instalove: No, but strong feelings are already there when this begins.

H (Hero) rating: 3 stars. Bowie. He was alright. I don’t think I really connected with him.

h (heroine) rating: 3 stars. Imogen/Genny. She also was just alright because I don’t feel like I really connected with her either.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not very many scenes and not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes, but this begins after it

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had a great epilogue but with what I would call a HFN ending for the couple

Safety: This one should be either Safe or Safe with exception for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences

It’s been a while since I’ve given a new KA release a chance and this freebie caught my eye. Side note: I was once a fan of KA but grew out of her writing style and alpha males but I still like some of my old favourites. AFTER THE CLIMB engaged my interest quickly with a story that was all about second chances, one of my favourite tropes.

I’m not going to rehash the story for you but I am going to explain what worked and what didn’t work for me. Character-wise, I liked the two main characters a lot and this fact carried me to completion of the book. I liked the family but how KA wrote the family I will return to. The male MC was not an alpha, and the ‘babes’ were kept to a minimum. I think the blending of the family that was central to this story, was fun but also somewhat unrealistic. The second chance romance was kind of lovely and light.

Now to the writing, having read so many KA books, I do know what I am getting into but unfortunately, what happens for me, is that the writing style stops me from sinking into the story. The robotic (thank you, Hollis) dialogue style that follows a unique KA formula does not float my boat.

But he looked how he looked. And he did what he did.

There’s a lot of these nonsensical statements along the way which I think is supposed to be endearing, but I have lost my love. Back to how the family was written, the family together were chaos but the dialogue with the family together was a disaster. I read numerous pages again and again, to try and grasp what was going on. Everyone was so humourous, everyone was so quippy.

All the above said, this wasn’t an awful book. I’m actually interested in future characters because it was a good story but whether I have to chops to throw myself back into the writing remains to be seen.

I know, most of the readers will love this story and feel everything I couldn’t.

Although the concept was amazing, as well as the the first chapter, the execution didn’t thrill me. The writing didn’t captivate me, and there were parts where it was in 3rd person!
The characters couldn’t keep my interest and I couldn’t connect with them or feel any romance.
The slow burn and the slow moving pace had me dnf it @ 40%.

I'm glad I listened to this one...

I admit that it took me a little while to settle into After the Climb. I wasn't sure I was in the mood for unrequited love, 28-year separations, or time jumping. Luckily, I persevered and ended up enjoying this story. Out of those three things, only the time jumping bugged the bejeezus out of me, even towards the end. I didn't like the character and didn't want to know how and why he betrayed the two closest people to him. The unrequited love was not an issue and the 28-year separation, while painfully unnecessary, still gave both characters good lives, in the great careers and wonderful children they have.

I liked the multiple narrators used and thought they all brought something essential to the story. It was very easy to listen to and I never struggled to tell when the characters changed.

This is the first Kristen Ashley story I've read/listened to in a while, and I really did enjoy it. Will I be reading or listening to more in the future? Maybe soon...ish.

A little reminiscent of old KA's but with low angst, this was good. The HEA and quasi-epilogue are KA's trademark and good. Qualifier: I kept my rose-colored glasses on.

If I take them off, I would take exception to:

1) The storyline lends itself to angst.
2) After a 28-year separation, both having been married with children, they would be different people and it would take time to know each other again, not pick up where they left off.
3) Would the entire extended family really get along?

Overall, a nice romance nibble.

I loved the start of this, it reminded me so much of my beloved Colorado Mountain series, but the tension was resolved early on and not much happened for the rest of the story. I nearly bailed a few times but I’m hopeful it’s just Genny and Duncan’s story that doesn’t do it for me as the set up for the rest of this series with their grown up kids is encouraging.

Full disclosure, I usually avoid stories where one character is a celeb because inevitably there’s a PR/social media drama and I find reading about it tedious.

Complete story. Free. Not KA’s best work imo, but a promising set up for her daughter’s story which comes next. Got everything crossed for that.

It's been a long time (years) since I picked up a book by Kristen Ashley -- but this one sounded like maybe it would work - a bit different than her usual, and there didn't appear to be any bikers in sight. So, I thought why not give it a go.

The story sounded like it might be something fun, the characters and family-related elements and a friendship betrayal interested me. I love a story set in the mountains, too. And I'll be quite honest, Duncan and Imogen's "older romance" -- even second go-round -- appealed to me.

But, once again the writing was lifeless and dull -- and not very well edited either. I don't know what happened to the KA who first graced the reading world with outstanding books. Those first few years when she made her entrance onto the pages of so many wonderful stories have just flippin' disappeared. I don't think they're going to ever return.

I may or may not give the second book in Ashley's new River Rain Series a look-see. I kinda like the idea of a match-up between a hot, mountain man ever popular with the ladies vs. equally hot city girl who is spoiled, out-spoken and opinionated.

I couldn't have begun my reading year in a better way, enjoying one of my favourite authors and an autobuy for me, the one and only Kristen Ashley!

After the Climb, is a sweet story about second chances and more important about family. The family we are born in, the one we make and the one we choose. I was moved by the romance but I am staying in this series for all the promising leads we got introduced to and all the possible matches.

Welp. That was meh. It was quick and it was free, and I did like that the MCs are 52/54. I decided to read primarily because I was riding a Dream Maker high, but this reminded me of all the things that drive me crazy about KA’s writing. The story kind of deflated at the halfway point and it was all clothes and furniture descriptions because of the lack of story. For diehard KA fans only.

2 to 2.5 stars.
If I were Genny, I would NEVER given Duncan a second chance. So I was never pleased with them getting back together.
And this is vintage KA. Too many endless descriptions of makeup, clothing and furnishings. A breathy giggly middle aged woman and a man who’s a little too crude for my taste.

I wanted to love this so much, but a few things ruined the story for me....
1. How could she forgive Bowie so easily? He did nothing to earn her loyalty back after ripping out her heart. Then moved on like she never meant anything. I hate when characters pledge their life to each other - then, bam - married and kids with someone else. Yuck. I wouldn't want someone's sloppy seconds (or thirds).
2. Tom got off way to easy. He not only cheated on her once, but twice with the same woman and ruined their marriage? She forgave him and no amount of bad karma came back his way. She didn't even want their son to be mad at him! What?! Why not? He deserves it for being a cheating scumbag and ripping apart their family. Then has the nerve to get made at Imogen when she moved on?! What a jerk.
3. A lot of the descriptions were a little too much for me, too in depth for no reason and I ended up skimming paragraphs at times.
4. I ended up skimming a lot of this book and it disappointed me, I never thought that would happen.

All together, I wanted to love this, but I am so sad that this story didn't work for me. I normally love KA books, but too much went wrong with this one.

Okay.
I reread the special edition.
Surprisingly better yet managed to maintain the incoherent qualities I didn't appreciate the first go round.
Points *but no extra stars* for KA starting to exhibit social consciousness in regards to Me Too and environmental issues. Now if she could just stop with the borderline domestic abuser heroes and guaranteed doormat heroines*
*This specialty was not present in this particular offering. Instead, we were subjected to the classic overabundance of fashion and decorating detail and a whole lot of page time devoted to characters that really had eff all to do with the characters of the supposed romance
