Praying the Labyrinth: A Journal for Spiritual Exploration

Rate this book
Walking the labyrinth is becoming an increasingly popular spiritual exercise across the country and around the world. Based on her experience at Chartres Cathedral in France and her training with Lauren Artress at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral, Jill Kimberly Hartwell Geoffrion has created a simple, meaningful approach to preparing for, undertaking, and meditating on labyrinth walks. "Praying The Labyrinth" is a journal that will lead the uninitiated seeker into a spiritual exercise of self-discovery through scripture selections, journaling questions, poetry, and space for personal reflection. While it may be the perfect introduction to the art of walking the labyrinth, this book can also be used by seasoned labyrinth users to bring new and deeper meaning to their spiritual lives.

A little gem of a book, from the beautiful cover illustration to the end...or should I say from the cover, to the center, to the end, and then again? This is not a book I WOULD read again; it is a book I WILL read again.
The book is a series of two-page chapters about the author's personal experiences in preparation for and during a "pilgrimage" to Chartres Cathedral's great labyrinth. Each chapter has a poem, a related Bible verse, and a question for reflection. If I had been reading this strictly for my own pleasure or edification, I would have read it like a book of poetry, a single "poem" at a time, with a day or many days between readings. This time, I had to read it in a rush, as it is on a recommended reading list for training I will be attending next week. Determined to "beast" this book so I could legitimately list it on my reading check-list, I thought it would be doing it a disservice to read it this way. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was wonderful, even read cover-to-cover.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in labyrinths. That's everybody, right?

I skimmed this in response to briefly studying labyrinths in my spiritual rhythms class. The book is a journal to provoke reflection with lots of spaces for writing.
