It's the mid 60's in East Newark NJ, and all Sam Pagano and his buddies want to do is get out of their 12 block town. At the same time, they love every second spent running around in their worldwide playground of East Newark, Harrison, and Kearny. Schooldays spent at St. Anthony's. Saturdays at The Warner Theater, Saturday nights at The Arrow Bar and Pizzeria. Youth sports that included lots of roof climbing kick the can, stickball, and cards for comics. Sundays after Mass, the pool room, and pasta. Come join Sam, Frankie, Charlie, Pete, Pepi, Tootsie, Lefty, and the rest of the gang for a stroll back in time.
Aleta C Oct 15 2020 12 Blocks is a refreshing coming of age, slice of life book that should be required reading for all boys entering their teenage years. The people and stories are real . I know first hand as I spent alot of my childhood on north third street in East Newark where my Aunt Mary lived. Sundays we went to church at St. Anthonys and after it was buns and coffee for the adults and outdoors for the kids!Sam captures the greatest time of our lives with such vividness that I felt I was actually there again. This should be made into a film!I cant wait for the sequel !!!!
I have to admit to knowing the author, we were work colleagues at the Y. I can hear Sam’s voice is I read this and smiled from ear to ear the whole way through (except for the goobers at the movie story) Sam was constantly telling stores and jokes at the Y to bring a smile to people’s faces and he accomplishes that in this book. I’m thinking screen play, good job Sam Pagano!!!
The author is a regular at work and brought me a copy to read. It's a quick interesting read, felt like watching your parents light up when reminiscing with old friends.
