I'm sold. I was on the face after volume one but now I'm in for the long run.
This manga is just funny. The covers for the collected editions are great too, because the artist can really draw cute girls. It's funny, well-written, and well-drawn. What more can you ask from a manga.
Uncle is shedding followers from his YouTube account, but a little kindness goes a long way, even online. Later on, shapeshifting gets involved and lots of Sega references show up. Also he ruins things for many people.
Well, I said after the first volume that if this softened a bit it could be really good. It didn’t soften up and it isn’t really good. Uncle continuing his distasteful misanthropic antics doesn’t do a single thing for me and I wasn’t able to get around it this volume.
Is it funny? Yes, there’s some amazing stuff here, I won’t deny it. When Uncle takes the form of Tsundere-san in the real world (though her actually showing up might make the story far more fun), Takafumi weaponizes this to make a killing and the rolling commentary from Uncle as they stream him (“they can’t even see the game!”) is absolutely hilarious in its density.
Anything else that is Uncle focused, however, kind of sucks. I get what they’re trying for here, with him misinterpreting everything in a negative light and causing himself far more hardship than is necessary. It just doesn’t translate well. His love of video games and attempts to use their tropes to get ahead is much better than anything else about him.
The problem that this book doesn’t seem to get, or possibly just revels in, is that a well-intentioned asshole is still an asshole. His constant use of that memory erasing spell without consent in particular is very, very gross to me. It’s a full on violation that I cannot get past, doubly so when it’s played for laughs.
It’s also really big on letting Uncle be this worst possible person to people who, for some reason, actually like him. The way he inadvertently invades personal space and gets overly handsy while meaning nothing is no excuse. It’s not my style of “comedy”.
Some of it is funny, some of it is really mean, some of it is icky. If you like a more cruel take on your jokes, you may enjoy this more, and I have laughed at some awful stuff so I would never judge, but it’s not my thing. Considering I just read a gag manga about a contract killer and I liked her a ton more, that’s saying something. I won’t even get into the gender issues this book has with its constant dumping on its female characters.
2 stars; this is my stop on this particular ride. It hasn’t really lightened up with its miserable nature and frankly I absolutely despise the main character. It’s not his alleged physical ugliness that’s the problem here.
More magical hijinks from an oblivious unnamed Uncle
This series has its hit and misses with so many stories packed into one volume so you are sure to get at least some you enjoy if you are into the self depreciating humor presented within the series. I for one am thankful they actually mention Tsundere-san has a special hair ornament that prevents any magic from affecting her mind or memory considering Uncle has a pretty good track record of erasing the memories and others in the other world (though for some reason or another he tends to allow a few to remember him like Mabel so who knows if he would ever try to erase Tsundere-san's memory or not.)
In this volume we also get to see more of Fujimiya who has been all to glad to stick around for her childhood friend Takafumi. However regardless of what happened in volume one she is in for some wild times as she experiences some of Uncles wacky brand of magic and awful decisions making. I mean come on...It would have been pretty interesting if Tsundere-san actually did somehow follow Uncle back into the real world. Also just for those that worry about such things Fujimiya is in one steamy (pun fully intended) shower scene but although you can see body shapes there is not definition to her body parts.
All in all this series has got me wondering what kind of crazy unexpected thing will we see next as they throw story after story at us like wet noodles against the wall to see if they stick. :)
I came across this series by way of the recent anime on Netflix. Having watched the few episodes available I had to find out how the story developed, and found the Manga online.
The amusing story of a man who has been living in a fantasy world for 17 years adjusting to life in the regular world, interspersed with recollections of his adventures in that world. Lots of fun.
Yeah, I'm now definitely sure this series isn't for me. I like to at least try and give it a couple of volumes, but this just... Something constantly feels off and I think the humour here isn't jiving with me. Again, a point for the concept, but the actual characterization and the way that characters interact has me lost.
The sketches are hilarious. Poor female protagonists who think they are facing the fearless, romantic man, but instead it is arm-twisting. I am curious to see how it continues.
I’m continuing to really enjoy this comedic manga, I guess I like dense, oblivious characters because the levels of obtuseness of the Uncle is just so hilarious that I’m right there with Takafumi and Fujimiya as they just can’t believe how his uncle keeps misunderstanding all of the advances of the HOT girls that keep hanging around and following him around... the ridiculousness of the situations is just very funny. Part of me wishes that the manga was just the Uncle in the Isekai world still, instead of 17 years later back in the real world.
Uncle keeps crossing paths with Elf-girl, who he continues to unintentionally lead on. We meet Alicia and her two friends Raiga and Edgar who are adventuring heroes who Uncle befriends, but then wipes their minds. Mabel also returns, seems that since she has nothing to guard anymore, the village has kicked her out and she has to make a living now, but she hates to work. Uncle basically rescues, gives advice, and takes care of business as an OP badass, all from utilizing lessons learned from playing Sega games!
More story does start to develop in the current timeline, we meet more characters and deal with Youtube trouble. I’m not as entertained by the modern stories, but I do wonder where it is all going - will there be a story line developing? Right now, it is more episodic with little issues cropping up, with the main plot being Fijimiya’s crush on Takafumi and learning he is nearly as oblivious as his Uncle to her feelings (feelings that his Uncle picked up right away!)... but so far most of the time they are watching Uncle’s Isekai adventures, not that I’m complaining - it is a lot of fun, I would want to watch too!
