It's been six months since Bree Miller's fiancé cheated on her and dumped her after she confronted him. It's been months of healing and she's finally been guilted into visiting her family only to have them demand she hand over her dream wedding venue—the one she hadn't quite gotten around to cancelling—to her spoiled younger sister.
Ugly crying in what she'd thought to be an abandoned park in her hometown, she is given words of 'comfort' by Devlin Vena— one of the most eligible bachelors this side of the hemisphere and a man she'd had a huge crush on years before. When Bree tries to brick him over the head with her handbag to make him forget he saw her like that, Devlin offers her an interesting choice instead. Take over the wedding that should have been hers, and get back at her smug spoiled sister, by pretending to be his girlfriend.
Bree knows the rumours about Devlin Vena not dating any living thing for longer than it takes his sheets to cool, so dating him would be big news. Big enough to have the press trying to barge in on her sister's wedding and steal the show. It's perfect. What could go wrong?
Started strong and then sputtered after the halfway mark.
The three stars are for the first half of the book, the characters were interesting, the family drama created good tension. The beginning of the story really drew me in.
At about the 55-60 percent mark, the story ran out of steam for me. It took weeks to finish this book. The main problem is that I realized the heroine and hero should be interacting, getting to know one another, overcoming obstacles but... that just never happened. Bree's family drama wasn't so much backdrop to the love story, it was almost the entire story. On top of it, her family seemed one dimensional. They were backstabbing and evil, but it appeared over- the-top and cheesy.
When the couple got together I wasn't convinced. When had they even decided they were a couple? It was like a whole chapter, the one where they talk about their feelings, express their love for one another, and tie up any remaining misunderstandings, that was missing. Disappointing.
Take a woman who's sister has done everything possible to make her life miserable, parent's who favor the evil sister while mistreating the successful older child and a man who wanted to date our lead lady and he knows his success is in part due to her. That long sentence says it all and with help of friends and the leading man, happiness was worth the wait.
This was a cute story. Of course I didn’t care for Bree’s parents or her sister Theresa, but I loved Jeanine and Devlin’s family. Bree was such a good person and only wanted her family to love her and treat her right, but finally learned that sometimes you have to love your family from a distance. Bree ‘s parents treated Bree bad and we never really understood why, but in the end it didn’t matter. I’m glad that Bree had Jeanine and that Devlin was there for her. I’m happy Bree and Devin were finally able to be together.
This book is funny and heartbreaking at the same time. My heart goes out to Bree. This girl went above and beyond to maintain family peace, but everyone has their breaking point. The love and support she received from Devlin and Jeannine kept her strong. They and others showed her what true family is about. Jeannine is a true ride or die and had her girl's back!! Theresa and the family got their due. Karma is a......
Bree had an awful family. Without telling too much, they interfered with many aspects of her life and her sister was a nasty loon. I really liked Bree and Devlin. They had. a long history together as frenemies. They both had feelings but never acted on them. I wished the author had allowed them to discuss the reasons they were not together. Just a few more details!
This book is not as good as Cali's past books. It still contains humor but goes over the top. I had to push through. Please rewrite and tone down the sister's craziness. This could be a great story of you don't throw the entire kitchen at it.
I really liked the style of this author. It had real LOL moments. Could have been a little longer, but the story was really good. I think I could read more books from this author
This was cute; I liked the couple. But, that family was over the top. Like Cinderella and the wicked step family except this was her real family. Her sister needs to be kicked to the curb.
First time reading anything by this author and I’m impressed. Great writing. Captivating story. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of the relationship.
My only critique is that the book cover doesn’t match the character descriptions. However, I still believe it is worth 5 stars.
She just subjected herself to the abuse? I could see putting up with it for a day or even two, but you are wealthy and sleeping in the attic on a blow-up bed with a hole in it? Make it make sense. I gave it a three for the humor and the beginning of the story.
