A ruthless vampire king. An alluring crime family heiress. A dark desire that won’t be tamed…

Charlotte...

Charlotte D’Amico never met a safe she couldn’t crack, a penthouse she couldn’t case, or a stuck-up rich guy she couldn’t deceive. So when the crime boss who runs her life orders her to spy on yet another reclusive billionaire, Charley’s not worried.

Smile pretty, keep the boss happy, keep her sister safe. That’s how it works.

But Dorian Redthorne is no ordinary mark.

He’s charming, funny, and sinfully hot, with a whiskey-smooth British accent that leaves her aching for more.

He’s also dark, dangerous, and definitely hiding secrets…

Secrets that might just get her killed.

Dorian...

Vampire king Dorian Redthorne has more responsibilities than he can count.

Keep New York’s supernaturals in line. Protect what’s left of his family. And above all, bury his dead father’s secrets… before their enemies discover the royal family’s greatest weakness.

Charlotte D’Amico is a complication he doesn’t need.

But the scent of her blood is intoxicating, her heartbeat a siren call he can’t resist.

One stolen kiss, and Dorian knows how this ends: He claims her, or he bleeds her dry.

Unfortunately, his pretty little con woman is as treacherous as his enemies.

The question is…

Which will destroy him first?

Sarah Piper is a witchy, Tarot-card-slinging paranormal romance and urban fantasy author. Through her signature brew of dark magic, heart-pounding suspense, and steamy romance, Sarah promises a sexy, supernatural escape into a world where the magic is real, the monsters are sinfully hot, and the witches always get their magically-ever-afters.

Readers have dubbed her work “super sexy,” “imaginative and original,” “off-the-walls good,” and “delightfully wicked in the best ways,” a quote Sarah hopes will appear on her tombstone.

Originally from New York, Sarah now makes her home in northern Colorado with her husband (though that changes frequently) (the location, not the husband), where she spends her days sleeping like a vampire and her nights writing books, casting spells, gazing at the moon, playing with her ever-expanding collection of Tarot cards, binge-watching Supernatural (Team Dean!), and obsessing over the best way to brew a cup of tea.

I felt like all this book was about, is how constantly horny the two were for each other, repetitive and boring sex, a king who isn't very king-ly nor alpha-y, and a supposed smart art thief of a heroine who loses her wits as soon as she comes into contact with an attractive man. Bleh.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. When I saw this cover, the blurb and that Shane East was one of the narrators I knew I had to read this.

I was sure it would be a five star read. Then I started it, thought "okay, not five but a strong four" and then...it got worse. Worse, but not bad.

First off, the narration was dual but slightly weird. By that I mean, instead of the female doing all the female voices and the male doing all the male voices, they each did every voice in their own chapters. Ultimately it wasn't a huge bother, just different.

I didn't like Dorian. Well, I did, a tiny bit, but he's my least favourite brother by far. He's whiney and not very kingly at all. Alpha male where? Not here. Next.

Malcolm was a lot more interesting and we didn't get to see a lot of him. If he doesn't show up much in the next few books then I'm hoping he gets his own series too.

Now Charlotte. I was expecting SO MUCH from her and got nothing. She's supposed to be a badass art thief who went on dozens of (successful!!!) undercover missions and I'm not buying it.

She has the knowledge yeah, but she loses her wits so fast when she encounters Dorian. How am I supposed to believe that she's super duper skilled if she's melting like the Wicked Witch of the West after just one conversation with him?

Makes me wonder how she hasn't been caught sooner. Or how that was her very first sexy time in a closet. Was it Char? Was it really?

Anyway, that brings us to the romance. That was both a hit and a miss. It developed too fast and the steam was cringy as hell in some parts, while fine in others, so 50/50. Okay, more like 70/30 but who's counting?

It got a bit repetitive too, or maybe Charlotte just wears a lot of dresses? That might be it. Dorian could spend a lifetime "palming" her dresses and lifting them up and it still wouldn't be enough. I think the sex scenes could've been cut down, there were a lot and they didn't add much to the plot.

The plot was nice, I think. Not one we see often so that's a plus. I like the little twists about the mysterious "illness" and I'd like to learn even more about different supernaturals.

The ending was a cliffhanger. And I didn't mind. This is not a good thing!!! I think it would've affected me more if it ended a chapter earlier. THAT was the cliffhanger ending we deserved.

But still, I will be continuing the series. Not as audiobooks though (sorry Shane), ebooks will be just fine.

Okay, so this is my first Sarah Piper's book. I have no expectation whatsoever and know nothing about this other than the blurb.

Pleasantly, I was surprised by it. The flow was nice, the paranormal side of things were nice, the characters were super interesting and I wasn't bored at all.

“I’m going to make you an offer instead. Two choices... Option one, you walk out that door right now, take the elevator to the ground floor, and disappear... Forget we ever crossed paths.”
“What’s… what’s option two?”
“Option two. I’m tearing off this pathetic scrap of lace, dropping to my knees, and fucking you with my mouth until I’m absolutely convinced you’ll never look at another painting again without recalling the time a stranger cornered you in the study at the Salvatore penthouse and forced you to come for him, again… and again… and again.”

See. Not bored. At. All.

A great start to a new series.

Kinda fifty shades in places which got an eye roll from me, but overall the romance and plot was done really well. The spying and thieving really add on a touch of crime and detection which I loved. The romance was great, the sex scenes could have been cut down massively but I can't really complain.

Will be waiting for the next book, the cliffhanger done really well. Enough to leave you wanting more, but also not incredibly frustrating.

This book was interesting but BE WARNED the series goes downhill from here! Dorian is a sexy vampire king who ends up falling for the hard as nails art thief Charlotte. Both of their back stories are interesting, but the real draw is how the romance is tied to art. However, the writing has a lot to be improved upon. A good plot does not make up for poor writing skills. I almost DNF this book simply because the writing was awful. The author is constantly telling me how people feel and telling me what people are thinking without showing me. I don’t want to be told ‘he was angry,’ I want to SEE him ‘clench his fists while his face contorted.’ I want people‘s motives to be implied rather than outwardly stated. The constant stating of character‘s motives makes the writer come off as extremely inexperienced or perhaps poorly educated. If only because of the awful writing but also because the story goes downhill after the first book, I would not recommend people read this.

Dark Deception is the first book in Sarah Piper’s Vampire Royals of New York series, and it sounded like a vampire book that would have me eager to devour the series. There were so many things that appealed to me before diving in, but I quickly found it wasn’t quite what I had expected it to be.

There were a lot of interesting ideas with this one, things that could have made for a fabulous story, but I feel like very few things were executed as well as they could have been. Things were happening because of the storyline, not because it made sense for the characters. It resulted in me finding myself annoyed with them, which was only made worse by the fact I never really felt any connection to them. Add in the fact this ended on a cliched cliff-hanger, and I was left underwhelmed by this one.

This clearly works for many, but I had expected a lot more from it after reading a lot of good reviews.

This book is so damn good. I’m kinda new to the smut game and vampires have always been my favorite! So combined that with an amazing plot, characters that you love, and a whole new world of the supernatural. I’m already starting the second book cause that was a dramatic af ending (Wasnt expecting anything less from a vampire novel loll).

Please check Sarah’s series out! It’s great, the pass is fast, smut is fantastic, the plot keeps you guessing and you’re left wanting more!!!

Love, love, love this book! Charly and Dorian’s relationship is so jagged and complicated. They both have complex relationships with their family members and I can’t wait to learn the reasons for that. I’m hoping we learn the truth behind Charly’s dad’s death and how demons ended up involved in that situation. I have a feeling that after that ending sorting this out between Charly and Dorian won’t be as easy as her simply telling him the truth, but I’m stoked to see what actually happens.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves vampires, complicated characters, and one heck of an amazing story!!

This book, wow. It had me from the get go and there was no putting it down. It moves along at an amazing pace which makes for an enjoyable and relaxing read. The characters are so real that you feel like you know them and no matter what you want to be there with them, to support them no matter what they need to do. The story will keep you reading till the end and then you want more. This book is a must read and needs to be on your TBR list now.

Confession: British guys who call you "love" will forever be one of my favs, it is what it is

Sooo this was a sweet sexy read!! And it was also the kind of book I hate to rate, because I wouldn't exactly give it 4 stars, but 3 isn't enough either, and that's why GR rating system sucks. But I'm sweet and I'm rounding up. This review has some mild spoilers (but not really much that isn't already implied in the synopsis)

Charley is our cute, annoying little heroine who was getting on my nerves kinda repeatedly. Literally every time she "wants" to snap back or stand up for herself in basically any situation she ends up being a whimpering mouse and not gonna lie, that's not a favorite personality trait of mine. She got better at it toward the end, but her internal struggle against being with Dorian was super unnecessary. She knew, we knew, the whole world knew she would give in every time. Not blaming tho, I would probably have done the same, hands down. But girl, seriously, why the hell would you even considering betray him after you found out he was a freaking vampire king? The fact that she didn't come clean directly and told him about her idiot uncle was a pretty dumb move? What the hell could her uncle do when she has a freaking VAMPIRE ON HER SIDE

And after finding out the truth, Dorian is understandably pissed. It's gonna be interesting to see how the lovers to enemies will play out in the second book, and I really hope it's gonna be angsty and not resolve in 50 pages lol

Instalove isn't a favorite trope of mine, and even though Dorian was hot, funny, and very much of a romantic, he was a biiiit too much of a good guy for my taste. I've been damaged by my love for villains, so that's on me.

BUT on the plus side, it had pretty good smut! Some very light dom/sub elements, some dirty talk, nothing unique, but it was still nice

"Call me a monster if it eases your conscience, love. But we both know the truth."
He fisted her hair back and tugged, forcing her to look at him.
"You sing a very different tune when the monster shoves his tongue between your thighs."

I was, admittedly, a bit disappointed by the plot outside of the romance. But I have my hopes up for the sequel, give us a bit more darkness though please

3.5.

There was quite a bit I liked about this, despite it having lots of tropes I usually don't go for.

Mainly, the chemistry between Dorian and Charlotte was really good. Actually, that's probably it, really.

This is definitely paranormal romance, rather than Urban Fantasy, at least my my definition of the genres, considering this book is mainly fast burn romance with various sub plots.

I am not a fast burn gal, and if there's sex in the first third of the book, I usually roll my eyes. This had both and it didn't bother me as much as it usually did, which I can blame on the chemistry between them.

For me this isn't 4 stars based on person preference, as opposed to their being anything wrong with it. I wasn't massively intrigued by the plot and needed more world building. It also had lots of secret keeping and I find that tedious.

I would definitely recommend this, though.

I need to get my head on straight for this one, because I kept mixing up the cover with the sequel lol, because the colour schemes are so similiar. There were a lot of iconic lines in this one! I listened to the audiobook for this one, and the narrator for Dorian's POV had a British accent, so it was amazing. Personally, I really enjoyed the heist aspects and the chemistry between Dorian & Charlotte. It's definitely a spicy book with swearing, so I nearly gave it a 4 star due to the amount of swearing, but it was a really compelling plot that I ended up binge listening to in two days. I won't be reading the other books by the author besides this series and the spin-off probably as I'm really intrigued by Dorian's brother.

DNF - quit at 18%
This just did not pull me in. Bored me right away, & I turned to FB videos instead. Starting in, there’s no hook, no balance, no world building, or a reason to care about the main characters. There’s no explanations for the things that are happening, they just “are”. The characters are flat, & I sure didn’t feel the connection (lust/chemistry/love) between them or a reason for me to be interested in them.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

This just fell short for me! The book details states that this is about a “ruthless vampire king”! Dorian is a wuss!!

I like my main leads a bit of alpha a-holes and if the intro states I am getting a ruthless vampire king I freaking want a ruthless vampire king! The book is classified as dark…

This is not a dark read! And Charlie… the art thieve? No man this was such a big letdown!!! The only redeemable thing about this book is the intimate scenes…

Boring. Literally nothing happens in the first 20%. No plot, nothing to pull you in or gain your interest. Both characters were dull as doorknobs. For a Vampire King who was "ruthless" Dorian was anything but. He wasn't very alpha or badass; he came across very human to be honest. It read as a contemporary romance almost because I forgot he was a vampire.

Not for me.

2.5* rounded up to 3
I love PNR so when I saw something with a ruthless prince and a thief, I had googly eyes and couldn’t wait to read it.
I (mistakenly) didn’t realize it would end on a cliffhanger or that it’s part of a trilogy, so that’s my bad… but it didn’t affect the rating that much (maybe a 0.25 drop because the cliffhanger was cliche).
Where this lost me were the characters and the info dumps…. Let me explain. For someone who’s a quick-witted thief, Charlie is SO quick to let a total stranger turn her head and unfocus her….time and time again. The whole reasoning behind why she sticks with her uncle? Also fell flat.
Then you have a ruthless prince who’s…. Basically a puppy in disguise. At no point did I get badass vibes from him, except during the sex scenes. And those were steamy and fantastic so if props to the author for that! At first I wasn’t a fan because it was all too Insta-love but they’re written very well.
The bit that was written very well, or I should say, distracted from the entire story were info dumps 😩 It’s these paragraphs of paragraphs of back story / history that could’ve easily been shown otherwise…but instead they’re dumped in between either sexy scenes or fighting scenes or just plain…everywhere. And they drag and slow down the pace and completely pull me out of the story. I found them hard at the beginning but as the book went on they just annoyed me 😢
I think, bottom line, as a reader I got fooled by the blurb and expected something completely different, more edgy, more fast paced, and I got…not that.

Actual 3.5

This was a good start to the series, but parts of it fell just a tiny bit flat for me - primarily the two leads.

Charly - this woman got on my nerves. For being an art thief, she was just terrible at it lol. She was constantly getting caught and once she was, she would try again because “who would look for me twice?” In the situations where she was sent in with zero background, I could forgive it, but otherwise it was just novice.

Dorian - a British immortal vampire, is newly thrust into the role of being King, and for that reason, I can turn the other cheek where he’s the worst at being a King. But truly, this man had zero inclination of what it took to be a King, despite following in his fathers footsteps for years.

Other than that, the supporting characters were more interesting than the two mains. The premise was fun, the spice was good, and I’m looking forward to seeing the series through - because who doesn’t love vampires & urban fantasy.

Spice: 🌶🌶.5

STORY: This is paranormal romance featuring the Royal Vampire King as the MMC. There is also other vampires, demons, and witches involved. The story is focused on art and the relationship between Dorian and Charlotte. There is also some good alpha/dom spice mixed in!

I personally really enjoyed the story, the character development, and plot. I was never bored and always wanting to continue on to find out what happens next! This book does end on a cliffhanger but I'm excited to get a hold of the next book to find out what happens!

AUDIOBOOK: I love when books have 2 narrators. This was my first experience where a male narrator did voices for both male and female characters and vice versa. It was different from what I was expecting but they both did a good job and were easy to listen to.

I was so excited for this one but it really fell short for me. The beginning started off great and I was really interested in but then I became really bored. The character kept having the same conversations and kept going around and around the fact they were both hiding things.
