Trabalhar dentro dos limites de um ''conto'' é, para mim, uma das formas mais dificeis de escrever. Apesar de não ter sido completamente capturada pela narrativa da Patricia em ''Correntes'', é fácil reconhecer o trabalho que foi empregue para contar uma história introdutória de forma realista, em que as sequencia de eventos faz sentido e o leitor não sente que a mesma foi apressada.
''Correntes'' conta a história de Ada e, mesmo sem estar dentro dos outros livros da trilogia da Patricia, termino o conto com curiosidade sobre o que irá a acontecer à mesma no futuro. Quero saber o seu desenvolvimento e, por tanto, vejo-me com ainda mais vontade de entrar no mundo de ''Sombras''.
Por tanto, resta-me dar os parabéns à autora, por em tão poucas palavras, me fazer querer aventurar-me pela história principal!

Antes de mais, queria agradecer à Patrícia por me ter dado acesso ao eBook dela 🥰 Foi inesperado, e fiquei genuinamente feliz por ela me ter considerado para esta leitura! Li a sinopse antes de aceitar, e vi logo que era o meu tipo de livro!
Em primeiro lugar, tenho de dizer que adoro a capa e o título. "Correntes", aludindo tanto à proximidade do mar, como aos laços que prendem Ada a Tide Springs, apesar da situação que vive em casa, é um título genial.
Adorei o mundo criado pela Patrícia (e acho que é capaz de agradar aos fãs da saga dos Instrumentos Mortais), e este livro deixou-me com vontade de ler os restantes da saga.
A escrita é simples e se, por um lado, contribui para o ritmo rápido da história e para uma leitura fácil, por outro, acho que este tipo de história, em que surgem criaturas fantásticas (neste caso, demónios), pode beneficiar de uma escrita mais descritiva. Houve algumas alturas, mais para o fim, em que achei as descrições um tanto confusas também.
Por vezes, achei as personagens pouco realistas, mas num livro tão curto, em que não há espaço para ver o seu desenvolvimento, não posso apontar isto como um aspeto negativo, mas mais como uma opinião pessoal.
Posto isto, trata-se de um livro muito agradável e interessante, que se lê muito bem e rápido. É uma leitura que me deu prazer e me prendeu do início ao fim. Não é um livro perfeito, mas antevejo muito sucesso para esta autora! 😄

Ontem comecei a ler este livrinho e de uma só vez, acabei-o! Tal como aconteceu em Sombras, adorei o que li. Percebemos perfeitamente como é que a personagem principal, Ada, acabou por se juntar aos Venatori e ainda conhecemos um pouco da sua vida antes de se juntar ao grupo. Apesar de ter poucas páginas, o necessário para se compreender bem a história estava lá, não deixando assim nada por explicar. As personagens foram capazes de nos transmitir emoções e mesmo sendo um livro pequeno, a ação também lá estava. A parte da criatura foi a minha parte preferida e o glossário no final foi útil e agradável de se ler. Vê-se que a autora teve o cuidado de estudar bem a sua história e todas as criaturas para sentirmos como se as mesmas fossem reais. Já era fã do trabalho da Patrícia e este não desiludiu. Ansiosa para ler Chamas!

Before you start Tides you need to know that it’s an origin story of an already established character in another series. Plus, it’s a novella so it’s short. If you go in knowing that I think you will enjoy it. Ada lives a tough, but normal life in the beginning. The supernatural elements don’t pick up until the end, but it’s shocking when they do. It’s just enough of a supernatural taste that it leaves you wanting more, which is clever considering it’s part of a larger series. So to wrap up my ramblings Tide is an enjoyable, quick read. I think it would be a great creepy beach read.

Ada Hughes is the only one who can take care of her brothers from their alcoholic, abusive father. She knows they deserve a future of happiness and is determined to secure it at all costs.
But even the violence that permeates their home doesn’t prepare Ada for the horrors that leap out of mythological books and arrive in their town of Tide Springs.
A novella featuring one of the main characters from the author’s Portuguese fantasy book series, Tides is a portrait of the inner strength that empowers people to stay true to their loved ones even in dire times.
At first, it opens with a considerably broad exploration of Ada’s bond with her brothers, their toxic home environment, and their past. To lose a parent to death and another to the vices of mankind can be extremely tough, and Patricia Morais’ storytelling is heartrending.
I feel that this part of the book is written in a much more persuasive manner than what follows. Here, through the author’s evocative writing, you feel for the Hughes children and wish that they had a better support system.
Although I personally couldn’t understand why Ada chose to remain loyal to their father despite what he put them through, I can agree that people have varying perspectives and priorities.
With the twist that is incorporated mid-way, the threat to the Hughes family changes. It’s an interesting dynamic as Ada now has far more painful battles to fight and that changes her character arc a bit.
After that turning point, I noticed several instances where Ada’s sentiments and actions seemed a little unconvincing. Perhaps if not for the limits of a novella format, those could’ve been developed more naturally.
I liked the fleeting glimpse we get to see of the fantasy world. The novella ends on a promising note that makes you want to read the series and find out what goes on in it.
The one main thing that I wasn’t fond of in Tides is the romance angle that is introduced between Nick and Ada. It felt unnecessary and changed the way I perceived the characters.
On the whole, I wish the rest of Patricia Morais’ works were translated into English. Tides tells an important story of a family destroyed by the actions of a protector.

Tides is a novella and companion story to a young adult supernatural series. As I understand it the original series has been published in Portuguese, and this spin-off book is the first to be translated.
This is the story of Ada Hughes and her background before she joined a group of supernatural hunters.
Ada and her family live in a small coastal town which is haunted by tales of monsters from the sea. When one monster becomes more than a myth Ada’s world is blown apart.
Not having read any of the main series of these books I was at a disadvantage going into this story. I wasn’t sure what was important detail and what was just background information. Without giving away too much of the story the finale was quick and Ada’s decision to go with the hunters was okay but it didn’t particularly interest me enough to want to find out more.

Este que foi o meu primeiro contacto com o mundo de 'Sombras' não podia ter corrido de melhor maneira! Tenho os livros da Patrícia Morais na wishlist há muito tempo, e quando ela me deu a oportunidade de ler este conto do mesmo universo fiquei super entusiasmada! 🤩
Mal tinha começado, ainda só tinha lido um capítulo, e já estava apaixonada e a precisar de saber o que estava a acontecer e o que ainda vinha a acontecer!
'Correntes' conta-nos a história de Ada Hughes que vive com os dois irmãos e o pai abusivo, que se virou para o álcool depois da morte da mulher. Um dia Ada depara-se com uma aparição sobrenatural que a leva a descobrir todo um mundo novo para o qual ela não estava preparada, e que lhe vira os planos do avesso. Será Ada capaz de superar tudo isto e dar uma boa vida a si e às pessoas à sua volta?
Assim, quero só deixar aqui um pequeno aviso para cenas de alcoolismo e violência doméstica, para o caso de não se sentirem confortáveis com esses assuntos!
E falando nisso aproveito para fazer um comentário... Aquele pai? Acho que já não tinha tanta vontade de bater numa personagem há algum tempo 😂
Recebemos várias personagens fortes e interessantes, relações entre as mesmas também bastante curiosas, criaturas mitológicas enganadoras, e a procura de um propósito!
Estava com medo que, sendo um conto, a história parecesse um pouco acelerada, como se tudo acontecesse muito a correr, mas não de todo!! A escrita é incrível, mantendo um equilíbrio ótimo entre descrição e diálogo, a história envolvente e os valores de amizade e família muito presentes também! Resumindo, preciso de mais!!
Sem dúvida que recomendo a toda a gente, quer já conheçam as obras da autora ou não!

Sempre tive imensa curiosidade nos livros da Patrícia, este conto é uma prequela aos livros ‘Sombras’ e ‘Chamas’ que nos apresentam um mundo onde demónios, criaturas e caçadores de demónios existem.
Adorei imenso este conto, aqui ficamos a saber como e porquê que a Ada entrou neste mundo. O que mais me fascina é o vasto conhecimento que a autora mostra nestas criaturas. Todas são descritas com todos os pormenores e até temos direito a um glossário de criaturas no final, que é muito útil.
A história, embora curta, é muito viciante. Li este conto super rápido, não conseguia parar, queria saber o que é que se estava a passar. Odiei com todas as minhas forças o pai da Ada, é o pior pai a face da terra. A Ada é simplesmente fantástica, adorei-a e fiquei com imensa vontade de ler os próximos livros por causa dela.
Adorei também, como este conto nos apresenta vários conflitos em termos de relações. É-nos apresentado, a meu ver, uma espécie de triângulo amoroso com uma pessoa a olhar para o triângulo e a querer entrar, mas que espero que não consiga. Isso é outra coisa que me deixou com imensa vontade de ler os próximos livros.
Em suma, o conto é muito bom, a escrita é viciante assim como a história. O conhecimento e estudo que conseguimos ver que há torna a história muito mais profunda e detalhada. Após a leitura deste conto os livros que o seguem subiram imenso na minha wishlist e vão de certeza ser uma das minhas próximas compras. Super recomendo que leiam este conto!

Um conto do mundo de sombras, onde nos vai contar a história de Ada e como se tornou uma venatori!
Simplesmente fantástico!

Ada já tem problemas de sobra ainda antes de se cruzar com o sobrenatural. Vítima de violência doméstica, o seu grande objectivo é conseguir a custódia dos dois irmãos mais novos para os livrar dos maus-tratos de um pai desempregado e alcoólico que descarrega nos filhos as suas frustrações. Mas se a situação de Ada é má, as coisas ainda vão ficar piores. Crianças têm vindo a desaparecer na vizinhança e ninguém sabe o que lhes acontece.
O que gostei mais nesta história foi o lado humano. Todo aquele ambiente de violência doméstica é muito realista e eu já estava tão interessada no drama familiar que, por mim, não me importava que o conto nem envolvesse o sobrenatural.
Mas “Correntes” é um conto curto no género Fantasia Urbana / Sobrenatural / Young Adult, e é desta forma que deve ser lido. A acção é relativamente rápida e privilegiada em detrimento de um maior desenvolvimento dos personagens secundários (que me agradaria mais), mas a protagonista é bastante tridimensional. É muito fácil empatizar com esta personagem.

Quando comecei a ler Correntes tive receio de que me soubesse a pouco e que ficasse história por contar, por ser um conto e não um livro mais extenso. Mas ao acabar (e li-o de uma vez) acho que a Patrícia não deixou nada por dizer e gostei bastante.
Tem uma escrita bastante simples e acessível, e todas as criaturas são bastante interessantes, como já estávamos habituados de Sombras.
Já esperava algumas ações do livro, mas não faria qualquer sentido de outra forma que não assim.

Uma cópia digital deste conto foi-me cedida em troca de opinião.
Correntes conta a história da Ada naquele que é o seu início atribulado neste mundo repleto de criaturas sobrenaturais. É um conto complementar à coleção Sombras , não sendo necessária a leitura da mesma antes de se aventurarem neste conto. Apesar disso, recomendo talvez que o façam, caso tenham interesse, pois admito que me senti um bocadinho perdida ao início. Nunca tinha lido nada da autora, e não estava familiarizada com o mundo, pelo que foi difícil entrar no ritmo. Adicionalmente, deparei-me com determinados detalhes, nomeadamente ao nível da escrita (estrutura do texto, vírgulas, ...), que se tornaram de certa forma obstáculos à fluidez da leitura. No entanto, tendo em consideração que o conto é bastante pequeno, penso que tenha sido uma introdução interessante, e que definitivamente suscita o interesse, tanto neste novo mundo, como na personagem principal, que nos é apresentada como sendo uma rapariga forte e destemida, que faz tudo para proteger os seus e que tem um coração bondoso. Para além disso, dado o desenrolar do livro, seria bastante interessante verificar de que forma é que este background trágico da Ada influenciaria a sua adesão ao mundo sobrenatural. Relativamente à história em si, admito que apenas não fiquei fã do pequeno romance. Finalmente, devo acrescentar que achei muitíssimo interessante a inclusão de um glossário com todas as criaturas, no final.

No entanto, tendo em consideração que o conto é bastante pequeno, penso que tenha sido uma introdução interessante, e que definitivamente suscita o interesse, tanto neste novo mundo, como na personagem principal, que nos é apresentada como sendo uma rapariga forte e destemida, que faz tudo para proteger os seus e que tem um coração bondoso. Para além disso, dado o desenrolar do livro, seria bastante interessante verificar de que forma é que este background trágico da Ada influenciaria a sua adesão ao mundo sobrenatural. Relativamente à história em si, admito que apenas não fiquei fã do pequeno romance. Finalmente, devo acrescentar que achei muitíssimo interessante a inclusão de um glossário com todas as criaturas, no final.

Adorei. Já tinha ficado fã quando li Sombras e Chamas, e agora estou ainda mais interessada no mundo criado pela Patrícia. Nesta pequena história conhecemos um pouco do mundo da Ada e os acontecimentos que a levam a juntar-se aos venatori. Não é preciso ler os outros dois para conseguir perceber, mas é sem dúvida necessário ler a seguir porque vão querer mesmo mais deste mundo!
Depois de ler Correntes fiquei com vontade de reler Sombras e Chamas. A escrita é super fácil de acompanhar e acessível, adorei o glossário no final porque demonstra o quanto a autora se preocupa, assim como a profundidade das suas pesquisas. Fico perdida de tal forma que parece que estou a ler sobre monstros e criaturas reais. Como assim os vampiros não existem na vida real? Ler os livros da Patrícia é como sentir que tudo que estou a ler é real, mergulho completamente nas histórias.
Existe um cuidado e um estudo profundo, e assim nunca existem plot holes.
Numa história tão curta podemos ler sobre amor, família, perda, luto e é possível criar empatia com as personagens (o que eu acho sempre super importante numa história), e claro que, também temos o paranormal que mais uma vez parece tudo tão real!
Aconselho muito que aproveitem para conhecer os livros da Patrícia, e Correntes pode ser uma boa oportunidade para conhecer o seu trabalho e ficar fã!

Correntes é uma novela que conta a história de Ada, uma rapariga que vive em Tide Springs, com os seus irmãos mais novos e o pai, antes de entrar para uma organização chamada Diabolus Venator.
Eu adorei a personagem da Ada! Ela é uma rapariga com um coração grande e uma lutadora. Digamos que a sua vida não é nada fácil, mas Ada nunca desiste e tenta sempre dar uma vida melhor aos seus irmãos. Gostei imenso desse “instinto maternal” que ela tem para com os irmãos. Odiei o pai dela claro, como é que um pai pode ser assim para os filhos?
Ao mesmo tempo que Ada põe em prática um plano para que ela e os irmãos tenham uma vida melhor, algo trágico acontece e muda completamente o rumo da vida de Ada. Desta forma, Ada conhece todo um novo mundo que até então achava que era impossível ser real.
Sendo a primeira vez que leio um livro da Patrícia, tenho a dizer que adorei a simplicidade da escrita e o facto de ser muito cativante. Apesar de ser uma pequena história, nota-se que tem um fio condutor e que nada acontece por acaso. A autora criou aqui um mundo incrível com criaturas míticas fantásticas! 😍😍

Hoje trago-vos a review do novo livro da @pa7riciamorais . Eu já tinha lido 2 livros desta autora e gostei bastante dos dois, portanto já estou habituada à escrita. É uma escrita fácil, e na coleção sobras existe uma criatividade e pesquisa enorme por detrás da história.
Este livro pertence à coleção “Sombras”, então já estava à espera de uma história cheia de criaturas místicas e de ser envolvida por mistérios em volta destas criaturas.
Apesar disto, é um livro que se foca no passado de Ada. Achei muito interessante conhecer o passado, nada fácil, desta personagem, acho que a enriqueceu imenso conhece-la mais profundamente e ajudou a criar uma ligação maior com ela.
Apesar do livro ter a parte sobrenatural eu fiquei cativada logo de início onde é mostrada com bastante clareza a parte humana, onde é também retratada a violência doméstica que Ada sofria com os seus irmãos.
Adorei tanto a parte humana como a parte de fantasia que nos é apresentada, acho que este conto conseguiu ter ambas com um elo de ligação ótimo e não tornar confuso, tornando a história bastante cativante.

Este conto faz parte do mundo sobrenatural de "Sombras" e conta-nos a história de Ada antes de se juntar a Diabolus Venator e como este mundo foi apresentado na sua vida.
Uma história que me deixou com um aperto no peito constante e que me fez ter uma ligação e uma empatia bastante forte por esta rapariga.
Em poucos capítulos conseguimos afeiçoarmo-nos ao passado de Ada e a querer saltar para a história para a reconfortar.
Tal como acontece com a maioria dos contos que li, desejei ainda mais história.
Fiquei presa do início ao fim e senti todo o misto de emoções que este conto transmite.
Já desde "Sombras" que fiquei super fã da escrita da Patricia e mais uma vez não desiludiu. Uma escrita cativante, bastante fluida e que faz com que queiramos mais e mais.
Escusado será dizer que para os fãs de "Sombras" é leitura obrigatória, contudo, se nunca leram não há problema nenhum!

Tides is the first book I read by Patricia Morais, and I enjoyed reading it. The story wass interesting, I liked the different creatures (and the glossary at the end). Tides was a good short story. I noticed, however, that this book was translated from Portugese. Some phrasing was a bit weird, but it didn’t bother me that much. I also think that a lot happened in this short story, and maybe a longer book would’ve been better. But besides that, I liked the short story and it’s perfect when you’re looking for a short Fantasy read.

This is the first book I have read by Patricia Morais, and I know it's a sort of introduction to the world of her other books..
Knowing that, I can appreciate how easy it was to get sucked into this book. It was quick, with the right amount of relatability and supernatural elements to keep you hooked and wanting to get onto the rest of the series.
Her style of describing the supernatural creatures was very appealing to me as well.. even if it was short-lived due to the length of the book.
I love TV shows like Supernatural and this book's setting reminded me of that feel.. great characters, family drama and otherworldly shenanigans.
It was a super fun and quick read.. I would recommend it for those who want something qui

Oh my god! I loved Ada I seriously loved every single page of this book.
It’s a quick read (I took 2-3 days reading but I’m a slow reader) I know that a lot of you would probably read in one sitting!
The writting is amazing and it takes you in one minute to the world with monsters that should exist only in books and how Ada discovered this world herself.
The way that the world is described and made it’s absolutely fantastic it really takes you in!
Be careful that there’s some scenes with domestic violence and alcoholism.
It definitely made me want to read the rest of the books in the series.

Um conto interessante que nos apresenta o passado de algumas personagens que surgem noutros livros da autora. Funciona muito bem como conto, como pilar da aventura de Ada. As cenas de ação nem sempre funcionam, mas o desespero de Ada é palpável. Fiquei com vontade de ler mais e a mitologia está bem explorada.

Who loves a good spooky read? Me! (And hopefully you too.)
This year I got to kick off spooky season in just the right way: by reading a creepy book about monsters!
I'll start with the obvious: this does not look like a spooky book about monsters. From the cover and the tagline, I'd guess it's a coming of age story featuring some family drama and messy love triangles.
Now the book does indeed have all those things, but it also has a vampiric sea creature, a disturbing murder, and a pair of sassy monster hunters. The author manages to weave all these threads together in a seamless, suspenseful narrative I couldn't put down.
At the start of the story, Ada Hughes is dealing with an abusive father, trying to save enough money to fight for custody of her two younger brothers, and feeling conflicted about her feelings for her best friend's boyfriend. This is all pretty engaging by itself, so I definitely wasn't bored. But the real action didn't pick up until a few chapters in. Then things really got going, and from that point on, my eyes were basically glued to the page.
While I did feel the final climactic battle scene could have lasted a bit longer, overall I have no real complaints about this story. It was fast-paced, fun, and just the right amount of creepy.
I also appreciated the complex characters and their equally complex feelings and dynamics. Ada's conflicted emotions about things like her father and her friends' relationship made her feel very real, and I was rooting for her from pretty much the first page. There was also some real tragedy that never got reversed, which, again, made it feel very real and valid as an origin story.
In my opinion, those are some of the elements that make for a really good horror story, whether on the page, stage, or screen: characters with complex psychology and real tragedy in their past.
And, of course, scary-as-heck monsters.
On that note (MINOR SPOILER ALERT): I do love a good lamia and was very excited when one showed up in this book.
So all around, kudos to the author for a good monster story well told.

Children are disappearing in the rustic fishing village of Tide Springs. And nobody knows how or why. Although the town is “known for its superstitions” and alleged monster sightings, skeptics are legion. So when Ada Hughes’ father insists he saw a sea monster after his last bender, Ada thinks he’s hallucinating. Until she meets a malevolent half women/half serpent being hovering over her younger brother’s bed.
Ada gets more than she bargained for when she later meets two venatoris – hunters of the supernatural. And the “supernatural” Shianne and Gabriel are hunting reportedly feeds on human children. Can they stop the creature before it strikes again?
The author packs a lot into less than 80 pages: a fractured family, loss, mystery, faith, youthful romance and a really, really bad mermaid/snake/demon thing. Because the book is translated from the original Portuguese, some of the phrasing is a little awkward. But it’s not enough to distract from this entertaining read.

Originally a Portuguese novella, it has recently been translated into English. It is a quick read of 75 pages and readable in a single sitting. Coming to the plot, what starts as a tragic family story with Ada Hughes, a doting sister, talking to her brother about how they can’t stand the sight of their father takes a complete 180-degree turn and gets transformed into unexpected supernatural fiction.
One day Ada’s father came running, blabbering some warning, and the next day, her loving brother gets missing. I first thought it to be a dream sequence but no, and from here begins the story of supernatural creatures. The author has tried to create a virtual world of monsters by writing out minute specifications of varieties of monsters. It seems unpromising when two experienced professionals couldn’t identify the kind of monster dealing, but Ada, with her sharp reflexes, recognized it, and the rest follows. Writing anything more will be a spoiler for readers.

Wow! What a truly captivating book, one that I enjoyed immensely from start to finish! This author is definitely one to watch out for – Tides is a gripping YA urban fantasy novella and is part of The World of Shadows series, which, aside from this novella, is only available in Portuguese. Please please PLEASE translate this series, Patricia! 🤞 This book is an absolutely perfect introduction to a promising series, and is also a great start if you’re new to this genre (like I was!)
This book surprised me on so many levels – even though I haven’t read The World of Shadows series, I enjoyed reading about the early days of Ada’s adventures and trauma, and I found myself daydreaming about what would happen in the main books of the series! The wording and language used in this book combined with the author’s exceptional storytelling skill made it incredibly addictive, even for a genre I don’t tend to read much. The characters were perfectly developed and likeable, and the mythical creatures were as terrifying as they were fascinating. I really cannot fault this book in any way – Patricia Morais is certainly an author I’ll be keeping an eye on in future. A perfect five star read!

Well, now that I have had the pleasure of reading one of Patricia's books translated into English, I couldn't be happier. As a person who mostly enjoys reading books in English (not sure why), I have been silently hoping this day would come!
Now that we have Tides, hopefully it will only be a matter of time before we get Sombras and Chamas also translated, and the rest of the world will finally get to enter the World of Shadows and get to know and love these characters that Patricia has created in her fictional world.
Reading Tides felt like having dessert first: it is short and sweet, but it does not feel you up.
As someone who is familiar with the rest of the story, this was a great short tale to give an insight on a different member of the group and keep us busy while we patiently wait for the third installment of the series. But if this is your first time reading anything from the World of Shadows, it will make you hungry for more and open the doors to the other novels, where you will find many more strong and complex characters and a huge portfolio of monsters that are just waiting in the shadows.
I am not sure about everyone else, but I finished this novel in an hour. Did anyone beat that?😅
