In FCBD terms, this is jam-packed.
It consists of 3 parts.
- a 4 page short story set 35 years before the main Asterix stories, showing the birth of Asterix and Obelix. This was quite fun, seeing a lot of the other characters, such as Fulliautomatix as kids.
- Asterix & Obelix's Guide to Friendship - the bulk of the comic - which has small snippets from all over the entire Asterix run. This gives a good taste of Asterix for anyone who's never read it before.
- a 2 page preview of Asterix the Gaul (the first Asterix book)
The biggest surprise I had was seeing changes from the Asterix I'm familiar with. Getafix is now Panoramix, some of the Roman village names are different, and the "introducing the characters" page has different text.
I wondered whether this was what the US versions had always been like. Turns out, they're totally new US translations that have only just been published. Thus this preview.
Almost all the text is changed in slight ways, mostly to make the grammar simpler but also to make it a bit more politically correct - eg changing Getafix to Panoramix (which actually isn't too sacrilegious because that's the original French name). Also they handily have the Latin translations at the bottom of the page.
