It’s been nine months since I had my first brush with Black Magic, nearly a year since the Fairy Realms were cut off from our world.

My life has become peaceful, routine. I have friends, I have a girlfriend, and all is right with the world.

Or it was, anyway.

One night is all it takes for things to go from perfect to perilous, one night in which my life is turned upside down, thrusting me into a war for my very survival.

One night that was supposed to be fun and joyous; the night where I met my girlfriend’s family.

You might argue that I should have seen it coming.

Crystal’s family are Vampires, after all...

But come on, how was I supposed to know that turning up for dinner would trigger a chain of events that nearly ends civilisation as we know it?

You know what, don’t answer that...

Glad for another one, but I’ve got issues

Just don’t have the energy to make this verbose, so I’ll make a list.

Pros:
1. Very long book. Felt like 3 major arcs. Enjoyable.
2. Resolved some lingering questions from earlier books.
3. Set up interesting problems for the future.

Cons:
1. Small thing- I didn’t see this before it came out. Give us some warning!
2. I know complaining about this is useless*, but I hate the way everyone in the protagonist’s life treats him. Sure they’re all on his side, but they all treat him poorly. They constantly demean and abuse him. Even if they later do nice things it doesn’t change the way they treat him. He likes it/thinks it’s normal but it’s a horrible way to treat someone. There is not a single person in his life who simply treats him nicely.
* I say it’s useless because it’s far too engrained in the series’ culture to change at this point. But hey, maybe if he ever embraces the Black that can be used to make a personality change, one where he isn’t used as a punching bag by everyone he knows.
3. This is probably dumb/late to the party, but Tethys is starting to creep me out. I think this book really rammed home that she doesn’t have human morals. The fact that she started perving on the Fairie princesses is messed up. They used to be love interests of the protagonist. He has discovered that they no longer have romantic feelings for him¥, so they are entitled to their own sex lives and are theoretically open to Tethys. But it’s so creepy! That basically falls into “don’t date your friends exes” territory.
¥Finally, this is another example of him being too nice. He couldn’t have even had a brief moment of being angry or put out? Normal people don’t just instantly get over things. They take time to process. He is nice to the point of being irritating. It’s too unreal and often weak.

Again an Amazing book (Spoilers)

First off, I want to state that HDA Roberts did an amazing job as usual. Through out the entire book I was kept on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. The only predictable thing in the book was that Myrrdin was going to be the bad guy. But other than that I couldn’t predict anything else.
Now to the critiques. First, I think Crystal was taken a little too quickly out of the story. Don’t get me wrong the way Roberts wrote it was well executed but I feel like Crystal could have been used in certain parts of the book later on. (One example is the “trial” scene maybe throwing a wrench in both Myrddin and Matty’s plans) The Sidhe princesses situation left me a little confused in the end. So as far as I understand without the spirit bond they are no longer attracted to Matty romantically but at the same time there were points in the book were it was hinted that they were still attracted to him. So I’m quite confused on this dynamic. These confusing parts come around the time Gwynn and Evi reunited and when Tethys was talking about it with Matty. (Not going to lie this situation really made me depressed. I honestly didn’t think it would end like that. Matty could really use some of that love right now.) Also I think the princess were a bit sporadic in their appearances at the end but maybe that was the point (after all they are Sidhe). One more critique is that the ending came about a little to quick. I wish we saw more interactions between the characters after Matty’s condition was discovered.
Now for the things HDA Roberts did exceedingly well at. As per usual Roberts’ comedic interactions between Matty and the other characters were amazing. (I’m still laughing about Kron pouting over fights she missed. Also her reactions in the last fight were just pure gold.) I love how Roberts brought Kron and Killian more to the forefront of the story and interactions. I was finally able to truly start feeling connected to them as a reader. Kron no longer felt as cold hearted and Killian finally snapped making him feel more human. (The prison scene was interesting.) Next is Matty’s interactions with Tethys and Kandi. As always those interactions always bring a smile to my face. Again just when I think something between Matty and Kandi will finally happen they get interrupted. Also I felt that Roberts has done an excellent job of growing Cassandra’s character in this book. (She is easily one of my favorite characters in the series.) And finally Matty learns how to fight efficiently. Not that his style wasn’t effective to begin with it is just more polished now.
Now some questions I’ve been waiting forever to ask. Where is the werewolf girl? I loved her character and I would enjoy seeing her make a reappearance at some point in the series. (Preferably as a major love interest). I could see her coming back to work for Matty. Will Cathy show up and give Matty some heartache? Also kind of wondering when the elder god in Sutton’s body is going to make a reappearance? I will laugh if somehow she and Matty end up getting close (maybe romantic) but this is Matty we are talking about. Knowing Matty, he will be extremely paranoid and weary thus causing some hilarious situations. Also where are the Liaisons? I really hope they help Matty fix his magic problem?(maybe white magic?) I also want to see Matty spend some time in America. (Mostly to just see an American magician and Matty bantering back and forth. A permanent American friend? Love interest for Cassandra? Kind of curious as to how the American Conclave works.)
All in all I believe this book went above and beyond other books in this genre and a fantastic read. Just a word of warning. Do not read if you have work or need sleep because the moment you open the book, you won’t be able to put it down.

A fantastic read

If you love or even just like fantasy then this series is great. If you like hero’s that have to work at staying moral the ones that face the true trials of power then you will fall in love with this book. I truly can’t say enough about this series I have read every book so far and try to get them as soon as they are released.

Outstanding Books / Series

So very much going on in this one that I can’t begin to describe it all. I can only say that is is excellent, and that you need to read it. Buy and read all of them, really. Very Strongly Recommended (16+)!

Ironic elephants

Now the rings are voting to leave him unprotected? He's facing imminent death because he wasn't protected like the other archons?!?!?! So are the rings trying to kill him or make sure that he only has one survival option? As in the choice they're using as the reason he's been abandoned? After this debacle, all the archons should give up their rings. His should be melted down, regardless. Love the series, but this still just about ruins it for me.

What a thrill ride! So much action, so much fun, such a mildly depressing ending only saved by the fact that there will be multiple sequels, which, personally, I need right now. I realize that's not an option so I will be impatiently waiting to read about what happens to Matt and his gang of misfits.
Apart from not really liking the ending, despite understanding that it's a reasonably standard story line, I loved this book. A lot is going on but it's well-written, very well-plotted and I love the characters even more than before. I also loved that it is a much bigger book and I hope that trend continues. I can't but must wait for the sequel.

Good. Solid, and fun. Started to get plot holes.

I'm still enjoying the story. As a character goes through a series of improvements and becomes more powerful, I noticed authors have a lot of trouble balancing plot lines that remain logical. This story suffered some of that as the plot lines started developing large holes that just didn't make sense. It wasn't enough to ruin the story however it makes the reader pause and wonder why the main character would do that. I think the author relies too much on the main character's relationship with The supporting cast, and goes out of his way to belittle the main character, which I think overall weakens the relationship between the characters. A little bit of that loving / teasing would make sense, however the author just goes on and on and it becomes sappy and stupid after a while. The story progressed pretty far in this book however I'm not sure where the character is going now because the author really hasn't made it clear. I think the series so far overall has been good however the last two books have been slightly disappointing and not quite at the same quality as the beginning of the series. I still recommend it, it's a good read!

I binge read the entire series up to this point during the last few days and had a blast. I don't think any other series has made me laugh as often as this series has. Primal's Wrath felt stuffed with content as multiple large arcs of story are contained within. My only real disappointment with this last book

A Great Series

This is really a great series. I've only read a couple series with this many books because most of the time the writing goes to crap. Glad to say not this time. So many characters but I really like all of them. The author does a great job building them up so you get to care for them. Right amount of action so it doesn't take away from the story.
If you're looking for a series to start I think you will enjoy this one. I've enjoyed this series from start to finish and I'm very glad the author says he enjoys writing them also and will continue to write them. Can't wait for the next book.

Not what I was expecting, but still fun and interesting story development.

After the previous book I was expecting that Mathew will use the Black in this book, and how that would develop, but no, still not Black Mathew.

By other hand the story is interesting, show more about the Archons, answer questions and close plots of previous books and is fun to read, beside end in a cliffhanger... So waiting for the next book.

Delicious

I acknowledge it’s unusual to use the word delicious to describe a book but that’s exactly what this series is. The MC is hilarious, godlike in power but as human error prone as the best of us. I eagerly await the continuation of the series. (I’ll admit I let out a small scream when the book ended the way it did but prior to seeing the note about book 7).

So much better

As full of inappropriate sexual innuendo and horny teenager scenes were in the last book I wasn't sure if I'd even finish the series but this book was the opposite and full of real magic scenes. Of course the main character reminds me of those horror films where they know better than to go into a place but are stupid about it anyway.

Interesting, disconcerting and confusing?

There’s more of the same strengths in this volume with political intrigue, plots and fantastical fights so if you are into that then here’s more fuel for that fire. The relationships make it hard to relate to the mc though (similar with the previous books) and there’s a spotlight shined on some for long enough that it feels more odd given the weight of some of the discussions that take place (honestly ended up skipping some of these to focus on the action)

Ahhh

One of my favorite stories. And i read a lot. Probably one of the funniest to boot, but i think that says more about me than the writing... anyways, dont do yourself the disservice of sleeping on this or any of the rest of The Magician's Brother. Im glad as hell i didnt.

Incredible story and I can’t wait for the next one.

Incredible story and I can’t wait for the next one... but do you really have to keep friendzoneing everybody? I really liked the Gweb/Evi dynamic.

Lack in growth has soured this one for me.

The main character made sense as an introverted high school student. The exact same character as an Archon is lacking and shows moments of shear idiocy. Something has to change or this series is a goner.

Awesome Story

This story of a guy with shadow magic whose every predecessor has gone insane while he fights to keep his humanity while his enemies keep poking him is an interesting entertaining reading.

Love the series. Longevity is key and author is setting up good long term plot points. Really enjoy the pieces of life he puts throughout and doesn’t make it all based solely around the central conflict
