From the artist behind the Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet manga! A vampire and a warrior nun’s fates are bound by blood and perhaps love in this action-packed series.
In a decaying gothic city, warrior nun Dorothy is tasked with hunting and slaughtering supernatural creatures. A member of the elite Crimson Sisters, she seeks to eradicate all vampires. But one fateful night, she encounters the fanged and beautiful Maria, wounded and desperate for care. Dorothy offers the half-vampire one chance at become my pet .
Wataru Mitogawa (ミトガワワタル) is a Japanese manga creator best known for illustrating the manga adaptation of hit anime Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, as well as writing and illustrating the manga Samurai Edge and GUNBURED × SISTERS.
Vampires are in a fictional modern day city and the church, well, A church, has the crimson robes to destroy them. Their leader, Dorothy, wants a dhampir, a half-human, half-vampire, to help her destroy the purebloods. Enter Maria, via falling rooftop. She wants no part of this, but her quest for her sister could use the church’s resources. How do you solve a problem like Maria? Bondage, apparently. And while Dorothy is violating her in all sorts of ways, if Maria isn’t careful this could be habit forming…
The only things hornier than vampires are the people who write about vampires, which is definitively proven by this ridiculous trash of a story. In fact, the vampires are downright celibate compared to Dorothy. You can check ‘horny nun’ off your trope list just by looking at the cover.
This is framed by the mangaka as an erotic tale about kick-ass females, which inevitably means it is only vaguely about kicking ass and about as erotic as a cheese sandwich (I apologize if I have maligned any cheese sandwich fetishists out there).
Within the first ten pages or so, Dorothy has stripped down and pleasured herself on her bed, in a pose that I’m willing to bet no female has made in the history of masturbation (do not feel the need to prove me wrong here). Then Maria comes crashing through a chapel roof and impales herself on a giant cross, just in case you didn’t think this was dumb enough yet.
At this point the book decides it is done playing around and gets really hardcore. Turns out Dorothy doesn’t want a partner, she wants a pet, and her smug, grating self has her sights set on Maria.
I will give, at this stage, that there are two moments in this whole nonsense where the temperature does go up several degrees. They are depressingly non-consensual, but this entire thing is depressingly non-consensual.
The first comes when Dorothy gets Maria to accept her blood for the first time, which definitely seals her dominant nature once and for all. There’s a similar seduction scene later on that achieves a lesser level of heat, but is still getting there.
However, Maria is pushed into everything against her will, Dorothy ties her to a cross, calls her a dog. There are hints that Maria’s getting into this by the end, but it’s all really icky from any standard of consent or healthy relationship.
In addition to a miserable lead and one pretty good one (Maria’s far more interesting than Dorothy ever is), the action in this story is highly stylized, which is the code word for ‘hard to follow’. There’s a definite sense that all of this is being made up as the mangaka goes along, which I always love (sarcasm).
If there’s a saving grace to this whole thing, it’s what I would call ‘the audacity of trash’, where the spectacle of what you’re seeing is sometimes enough to hold your attention. It reminds me a lot of Murcielago, although this occasionally feels like that series if it was wired on amphetamines.
The cross Maria lands on turns out to be a weapon whose design is insane. Maria’s transformation is, indeed, insane. There is a ridiculous car chase, probably the best part of the book, that turns into an absolutely mad foot vs motorcycle chase where vampiric thighs nearly steal the show.
This is not a yuri series. It isn’t. It’s a pure trash shonen action series that also happens to have two women who are mashing their bodies against one another less out of love than appeal to the audience demographic. It’s also never boring, so there’s that.
2 stars - this is stupid, garish, idiotic, boundary violating, thirsty, poorly drawn, farcical junk that I’d never recommend to anybody who has issues with consent or even a modicum of sense. Yeah, of course I’m reading the next volume, are you crazy? The fault, dear Reader, lies not (just) in the series, but in your reviewer.
A blood-red manga featuring a sadistic nun and her “dog” a dhampir.
Welcome to a world where vampires (and dhampirs) live and where nuns (and police officers) try to help out the general population. I just love this setting of a normal world with normal people but hey there are some vampires in the mix (like Trinity Blood). Add to that a dash of yuri and humour and I am in. I just had to try out this book.
Dorothy is a nun at the church, and not just any nun but a very special will-kick-your-butt nun. But she is also a tad cough odd. For a nun at least. She is quite pervy and she is highly sadistic. She can look all innocent, but oh be warned what goes behind that face. I loved her from the start. Her design, her personality. She is just so evil at times and while at times she does go a bit too far with Maria (the treating her like a dog is just a minor thing given how far she goes with that and the things she says/does), she was my favourite character. I had a laugh how she was undeterred by Maria’s rage. Well, OK, she gets a bit off on it.
Maria is our Dhampir and a kick-ass one at that. She is apparently searching for her sister, Noel (really mom naming your kids Noel and Maria) and nothing will stand between her and her sister. While I liked Maria a lot, at times I wished she would just listen to Dorothy for once. Yes, not all that comes out of Dorothy’s mouth should be followed, sure, but there are some good tips/hints there. I loved how she transformed when she had some yummy blood, though haha I can imagine the first time she saw her outfit she just flipped, I would have done the same. ;P
There are quite some great action scenes and lots of explosions and vampires going BOOM (or splat). I really enjoyed those action scenes and loved seeing Dorothy and Maria in full combat mode.
The art was just perfection, I love the outfits the girls wear (this sounds mighty wrong but I will go with it XD), and I love love Dorothy’s design. It is chef kiss perfect. I love her facial expression, the artist really captures her pervert/sadistic side to a t.
All in all, this is certainly a manga I will keep on reading. It got vampires, horror and a tad of gore, and tons of sexiness though we need more and Dorothy. Oh, and I need to know more about that girl at the end!
2,75? Something around that number. I am so conflicted about this, I have no idea what I just read, but I'm certain I have completely ruined my brain. Listen, the concept is cool, sure. I love the artstyle and the action scenes and the blasphemy is quite funny at times, but there are so many bad things about it. Not just the poor execution of the plot and the fact that this feels like a fever dream in a mediocre way, but the fact that this is an OBVIOUS FETISH WORK just messes with any positive views I could ever have about it. Sure, some people might like completely uncalled-for pin-ups of half-naked nuns with guns, but JESUS CHRIST am I uncomfortable!
Though this is probably just me being a puritan or something, who knows.
This was a huge joke. Gunbured † Sisters is bad in the sense it's so bad that it's good but it's still really bad.
When vampires attack Dororthy’s church, she decides that extermination of monsters is the required course of action rather than praying. While she prays for the powers to kill vampires, an actual vampire killer (a Dhampir) named Maria, crashes through the roof and manages to impale herself on Dorothy’s huge cross. It's as big as an average BDSM cross.
They kill some (okay, a LOT) of vampires but here is where it gets weird. Dorothy decides that she has to make Maria her dog. And then a lot of absolutely ridiculous things happen, that too, while they're dressed in nun clothing. If you thought catsuits are impractical for missions then look again, because these are nuns with guns in impractical floofy clothing (this of course is justified as the clothing being an all-round protective gear). Actual nun clothing is nothing like this.
Gunbured † Sisters being essentially an ecchi, had a number of “sexy scenes” with large unrealistic boobs and cheeks–something I normally steer clear of. However, my problem isn't that this was borderline hentai (not to judge people who like to read sexy ecchi), but the manga felt shonen in the worse possible way. This is yuri which caters to the shonen audience. Take this scene↓

Supposedly, many review on manga websites proclaim that this was "plot-heavy". No. This is a manga which makes up crap along the way. The art was great but the sex scenes had awkward lines and were badly done.
TL;DR There a lot of gore, combat in ridiculous nun clothing, edgy more than gothic, lots of unsexy yuri sex for the shonen audience and the semblance of a plot. If these are okay then go for it.
My advice, don't bother, it's terrible. I expected a tongue and cheek story about gun toting nuns but instead I got one in an outfit who was constantly horny, then her friend the Dhampir shows up and she starts calling her a dog.
It just lacks story, yes there is a lot of things it could do with the story but it's just too focused on squeezing tits. The Dhampir has the same sad story as Blade, you know outcast from the vampires and humans and is forever hunting them, this time with one kidnapping her sister. It's just such a slog to get through, there are tons of vampires manga out there that I'd suggest over this, the best thing this has going for it is it's cover.
It's a fun read but can't really be taken seriously. The art was very impressive (but very overcrowded) and some of the plot points were pretty interesting. But overall, I found most story details forgettable and most of the romance stuff very random. Some of the lines were a bit cringy too, but maybe that's just a translation error.
I had a fun time reading it but most likely won't continue the series. But who knows!
I am feeling a bit generous with this rating, but it’s the first in the series, so I give a little slack. Overall, my review is, “I’ve seen better.” The plot is fine, but not composed in a compelling manner. The characters might have depth, but so far it has only been hinted at. The art, much the same, just okay. Still willing to read the next installment.
I appreciate this for being bombastically fetishistic, as well as having a sort of Grindhouse meets Dark Souls 3 aesthetic. It's a lot of fun.
I think this is the case where detractors and fans are going to agree on the relevant parts of the series, but just disagree on whether those things are a bad thing or a good thing.
Nuns and vampires, what's not to love? The story may not be the most unique, but it was fun to read regardless. I loved the art, the characters, and it made me chuckle. I say it's worth a shot if you don't mind nudity and gore. Can't wait for the next volume!
Honestly, if they just animated this or turned it into a hentai. It would probably be better. So yes, the art is that good and it gets very nsfw/lewd with it. However the story is weak compared to a similar concept like Chrono Crusade.
It's dark, disturbing, sexy and appalling all at once. The story line is interesting and keeps you engaged. I would highly suggest if you like Vampires.
It's my least favorite yuri manga so far. I thought there would be more appeal to it, but I'm committed to finishing this series because I bought all of them.
If you’ve read Murcelagio, this feels like it has a similar atmosphere (Dorothy has some heavy ‘Koroko’ vibes), but less horror-style gore. For me, that’s exactly what I expected, and it’s exactly what I got.
I’m rating this one 4 stars because this is pretty much what I wanted out of some trashy pulp about lesbian nuns fighting vampires.
