After a scare with the big C word and a negative resulting skin biopsy, comfortably introverted Vel suddenly sprouts a friggin’ unicorn horn from the site on her forehead.
And her world slowly slips into chaos.
One trip through an antique mirror and it’s all fur, wings, horns, and wild magicks.
Vel literally tumbles right into a world unlike anything she's ever known. Pegasus men, magic casting mages, shifters, Minotaurs, horned beings, dragons, Centaurs, never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined such strange beasts, such fantastical sights in a fairy tale fantasy land one could only dream of.
What's an Earth girl to do?
For those of you that have been following along, this is the beginning, where it all started. Portals, magicks, and as always, plenty of mayhem.
DNF-15% I have read and I enjoyed this author before but I just couldn’t get into this one. It felt disjointed and chaotic and was all over the place at times very hard to understand with all the slang talk. I also don’t think I like the main character Vel that much which is extremely problematic considering this is all told from her POV. She comes across as very rude with her derogatory nicknames and petulant hyperactive attitude. Vel is like snark on acid and comes across as absolutely mental. It does have some highly imaginative ideas though and I’m definitely not discounting reading this author again in the future but this one is just not my bag, unfortunately.
I wanted to love this book so badly, but I was left disappointed, so disappointed. Rant ahead, and it's apparently not a popular one, but this needs to be said because this book? This book makes me mad. So. Mad. I'll explain why further ahead.
Off on a shaky start, we have Val, the main character, going to a doctor's office to have this bump looked at by the professionals, fearing the worst, hoping it wasn't cancer. It comes back negative, but it doesn't go away. Val is constantly putting people down, making assumptions, calling them bitchy, blah, blah, blah. I can see Val having a breakdown in this situation. She's scared and upset no one knows what's going on. What I don't like is how the characters being referred to are bitchy and stupid. Even the doctor staring dumbly wanting to push her out of the door rather than study it or refer to a specialist or Xray. You know, stuff that health care professionals do because, at the very least, $$$.
After she makes it to the Otherworld, Val's horn seems to disappear until it comes into conversation, much like her.... dog... The part that just did me in and was the last straw on putting this thing away, was her constant petulent name calling. Val is a stupid and ugly person, and I'm not talking about butter face ugly. I'm saying I cannot see what anyone likes about her ugly personality. She's cruel, a bully, and petulent. My 7 year old acts better than her, and I've had it with Lynn's writing.
Rant nation ahead: Every character I have ever read by Lynn has done something to make me not like her, but it's always, ALWAYS, the character trying to come off witty, but really just falls flat, usually with name calling and empty, weak threats. Each book has become worse, and worse. At this point, I don't think Lynn is even trying to make a book. In fact, I am convinced she's put out a plot and filled it with so much tantrum just to make the book longer. When an insult is just a butchered name over and over, she says "Don't correct me, I'm doing it on purpose," and then follows the butchered rendition with Ding Dong? Done. There is zero reason to continue. Did not finish, do not recommend. This book is nothing but a huge F* You to the readers.
PS, 30% in, there is nothing clearly indicating it's a time travel. Maybe it comes up later, but not in the parts I read. It wasn't worth it to find out.
I really really wanted to like this, but this is the one book I did not like by Jeanette lynn. This book had lots of great ideas! And I think it really could have been a great book, but between our H and the lack of anything really going on besides with just her I was very disappointed. out H is beyond childish and petty, her snark and ramblings were so confusing at times I was sure if what I was reading half the time, she also was a stage five clinger in the worse ways, between the tantrums at not getting her way she was the ugliest brat I've ever come across. I find it entertaining that she has sex the first night in a new realm, and the next day her lover has obligations to things he has to do that are already in motion, 30% of the beginning is if her hot and cold because he won't stay and give into her demands, she thinks he will leave her for another, then she pretty much this whole times keeps saying I can't do this, I'm not doing this just go! He finally does and she's shocked by this development? Because he didn't chase her crazy and become her b****h? Then while he's gone she sleeps with others? I like a RH when done right, this was not one of them. It's not discussed if this is ok? All her men are very possessive, yet she thinks of nothing or no one but herself. As we move throughout the story it's not really explained who she is, how she came to this new realm, nor why was she on earth? there are much more unanswered questions yet this whole book is of are heroine getting in crazy bad situations, spreading her legs and getting banged by everyone and their mother. She practically throws herself at everyone like a wonton wh**** it made me speechless and I really wished I hadn't finished this book.
Dnf 72% (2.75 stars) Ok, I came back to this and kept going. The writing does not get better, but I think I got more used to it as the story went on. The story seen through the weeds of weirdness is not bad, but something happens at 70ish percent and I'll admit I'm worn out🤣. I'll update if I find myself back here again ... Hopefully, I'm moving on.
Dnf 12% I usually like this author's weird storylines and characters, but in this book, even the writing is weird and it was just too much. I'm not even sure what I just read it was so disjointed and chaotic. I thought maybe if I pushed through it would level out, but this is a LoNG book and after pushing through for awhile I was only at 12%
I give up. I really tried with this one, but Vel is insufferable and not improving, and the male cast so far is not impressive or really trying either. We're all just going through the motions here. Lynn's work for me is always either brilliant or absolute miss. This is a big fat miss, and it's trying so desperately hard to be funny that it's missing the mark about 85% of the time.
Fun read showing ALL the various races our author has graced us with in the past.
I had a little bit of a hard time getting into it at first. Since it was a longer book, I wasn't worried that I wouldn't enjoy the whole thing and I was right. It may have a slow start but it had a rollercoaster feel to it as the action sped up. I did enjoy seeing how Velouria matured and her mates all grew into their relationships with her and with each other.
Vel is having a hard time lately. The mound sprouting off her forehead is just the latest of many issues. While the negative results for the cancer screening were nice, it isn't making the lump any smaller. And the follow-ups weren't cheap. And then when it finally fully erupts, well, that was fun. Pain went down to an ache, but the whole mirror turning into a portal thing? Scary. Especially when she tumbles into a room with a pegasus man and a Gandalf reject. But, at least her dog came through with her, right?
Spoilers ahead. I love pretty much everything Ms Lynn has written. This was no exception. The humor is as snappy and scattered as ever. Slang flies at a rapid rate. This one reminded me a lot of What Dwells, both in the number of mates, their personalities, and the order they are collected. I love the concept of a prequel, where we meet the Taurans, the Moncirens, the Sodradens, Pegosians, someone from the Vale, and even a Morclen (not sure I spelled the piggy people race right). While the story was a little bit broken in pieces, and some things were never fully explained, of this is the first prequel, leading up to the portal issues, then I'll be ok with its lack of insight. There's a lot of magic, but it's all different, none of it explained, and it's becoming less common but no one knows why. Each race had some abilities, you wouldn't think blending them would cancel it out, just create mutated abilities. So, yeah, I enjoyed it, but I got questions lol. And, 1 frustration. She landed in a new world, with new beings and new rules. Why wasn't she asking questions? She reacted without information, but never asked for the information. She even berated them for not considering her wishes, when she is the intruder with different customs to them. She improved, but it took some time, and "could have been avoided if she'd only asked" arguments to get there.
I just have to say that I think this book is AWESOME! I have read this book 3 times. However, when I first started reading it, I didn't know how to feel about Velouria. I figured I would read the book all the way through....and I am so glad I did. She turned out to be a very snarky, but loveable character in the end. Once I finished it the first time, I immediately went back and read it again. Things that I missed the first time around suddenly made sense.
This book is a reverse-harem, which means our heroine will have more than 1 mate. She loves them all and they in turn, learn to share. If this kind of story does not interest you, don't read it. It isn't for everyone. The story ends in a happily ever after.
I found myself laughing a lot at Vel's inner monologue (the second and subsequent times around). I loved her relationship with her "idiot mage husband." Alestaire was indeed a "trip" and was my favorite character in this book. He did a lot of growing up throughout the story - and sacrificed a lot to save his Velouria of Earth.
Falkore was a very lovable (in my opinion) Nogard dragon shifter who grew up alone and didn't know how to interact well with others. It was nice to see how he integrated into their little family.
Broz was my third favorite character. He loved Vel so much - his beloved, "Kepkie." Vel shared a lot of her "Earth customs" with her new family in Nethercourt.
This just might be my favorite book ever! I certainly hope that Jeanette Lynn with continue on with their story! I would love to see a few dark baby mages from Vel and Leste. Awww...would be so cute! Don't want to give anything else away...but please! Give this story another try if you have already read it. I did and I am glad!
was full of one chaotic event after another for the main character Vel. This rollercoaster ride was full of emotions, adventure, humor, magical and mischievous characters. As always with Jeanette Lynns stories there is wonderful internal monologue we all go through. Embarrassing and emotional and heart pounding moments for the heroin. There are also hints and nice little nodes twords some of her other books like Of Another Dimension and the Lo denaii from The Bride series. This story is a reverse harem and an awesome ride. I wanted rush and read it all but also wanted to savour the tasty adventure. I look forward to snatching up the paper back when I can.
Currently at 17% and I'm so confused by a lot of the writing. I downloaded it through Kindle Unlimited. Am I reading an unedited version?
There are weird sentence fragments all over the place and the author is coming across as either someone who is not a native English speaker, or possibly just an American trying to use British and nerd slang and failing, or maybe someone who writes stream of consciousness with the intent of going back and cleaning it up so it parses in other people's minds...but then got lazy and released the story as is.
I'm also having a hard time picturing the characters or understanding what's going on. It's very disjointed and vague. Mostly just Vel reacting to things? Was it a mistake to start with this book?
This is a fun story with well defined characters and a lot of action. There was Insta love with a four different aliens and a believable struggle for them to share. I liked that each male lead had very different personalities, but the female lead seems to have the exact same personality as the female leads in other books by this author. She starts out introverted and sympathetic, but then suddenly is loud and sarcastic and less likeable than the males. I wish this author would write a book with a different type of female lead for a change. It was still a fun book to read.
Zero stars - Confusing story with an unlikable MFC This is a story that had a good premise but terrible execution. Vel, the MFC, spends all her time making snarky comments about everyone and everything. It is confusing to know who Vel is talking about because she gives everyone a new nasty nickname everytime she speaks or refers to them. I have read stories with sassy characters that have cutting wit but Vel just comes across as a b***h. I didn't make it past the bathing scene - it was so bad by then that I couldn’t take any more.
Don't waste your time with this one - there are much better stories to read.
This quite possibly has the worst heroine I’ve ever read about. There isn’t actually a single redeeming quality with her. She acts worse than a child. Sulks, name calls, belittles, bemoans everyone else, if you don’t do exactly as she wants she literally has a temper tantrum, cries and then falls onto someone else’s peen. Zero impulse control. She has no endearing qualities.
Are MC wakes up with weird bump on her head that can't be explained. Only to accidentally tap a mirror and end up in a different dimension with her dog. Things go from there with a roll coaster of emotions. Jeanette has written a unicorn story where the characters are flawed and they know it an try to fix it to be better.
I cannot get enough of this world. This book had all the feels. Excellent adventure, I love the idea of someone falling through a rift into a different dimension and Val was absolutely ridiculous and I loved her. She was just so full of snark and sass! I absolutely ADORE her men. Please continue with this series I love it so much!!
She’s back! This one was awesome! The last few books she’s written have not been my cup of tea… Way too many unnecessary details and way too many headspace conversations. This one however is just as good as the ones I first read! Way to go!
I really loved this book. Jeanette creates worlds i would love to live in. Highly recommend this book. Hopefully there are more like this in the future. Thank you! Now I have a book hangover.!!
I don't really know where to start. The author didnt really know either, to be fair to myself. The main felt REALLY juvenile instead of funny, quirky. Mean at times. Just mean. The book it self was more like 4 books, none of them really fleshed out, jammed into one. Too many thoughts, tangents. Sometimes hard to follow. Descriptions of people and places were at times, lacking and you find yourself turning your book upside down trying to make everything make sense. There were some really good ideas and i read right on through to the end but definitely not into the authors voice.
DNF 3%. The writing was so bad and confusing, it didn't make any sense to me. Abrubt scene changes and we only have the heroine mumbling and talking to herself, like she was in a bubble and not in the real world. I felt blind while reading it. So nope, not for me.
Well I've only just found this author and I'm in love with all her series so far. Really awesome and hits me right in the feels. Can't wait to read more. JL
Always a pleasure to read Lynn's story. A palette cleanser for when one is searching for a HEA.
Not only that, but the stories are consistely diverse : the dimensions and worlds, characters and species, relationships, ...
I do share some of the other readers feelings with the heroines (although i do not feel as strongly as they do). The heroines always go for witty with overconvoluted name calling. Perhaps not having english as a first language, makes it harder to, at first understand, but even then its not very natural. I have never met someone that talked even 10% of what these heroines do. So... being a constant it stops being funny or witty. Not enough to drop the book, at all, but it does loose the "effortless" of it. I believe thats where Lynn loses most of her readers. But I cannot fault the author for writing the heroines in a certain way if it truly is in an honest way to her.
I would also appreciate if the heroines and heroes were a bit more deep ( expressed more thoughfully instead of just seeing the action behind a reaction) but taking into consideration the world/relationship building it's understandable. There are other books were its more relevant.
I love LOVE the depth of the relationships. Although its a bit too "insta" in most cases, its always a case of pheromones or "girl gone wild in the head", fortunately it is always developped by the end of the book as more than that.
Overall, as a reader I would give 4/5 stars to all of Lynns book. And I sincerely hope more readers would give this author a chance 💚
Perhaps by joining social media groups dedicated to reverse harems, and doing a bit of publicity ?
Not my favorite, but I have read almost everything by this author. Some of them make me feel angry and want to throw something, others are mostly brilliant, and the rest are somewhere in between.
The FMCs are usually a bit of neurotic jerks, have disgusting habits, are vulgar in a way that is hard to explain, and have a really poor/childish senses of “humor.” But...not always. Sometimes they are pretty good.
My biggest draw to this author is that the stories are so “out there” and incomparable .
Do I recommend this one? Ehh...if you like the author and most of the other works, I would give it a go. If you skip this one, you are not missing one of the better ones. I have a bit of a compulsion to finish series and every book an author writes. It takes a lot for me to break that habit.
I LOVE this book. One of the best 1 Harem stories I have read. Sucked through a mirror?! A horn growing out of her head! Seriously an awesome read, check it out!
