SLIGHTLY MURDEROUS INTENT: A Southern California Mystery (Corrie Locke Mystery Series Book #4) by Lida Sideris is the latest in this light mystery series featuring Corrie Locke. This is the first book I have read in this series and while the mystery plot stands on its own, I felt slightly confused in beginning until I caught up on some of the characters’ past interactions.

Corrie Locke is a young attorney for a film studio who is a sleuth on the side. She grew up with a famous P.I. father who was murdered. Now she has a closet full of weapons, the irrepressible attitude to fight for justice and a boyfriend who is a computer whiz.

There is an inept shooter on the loose and he appears to be after Corrie’s friend James. She pulls a unique team of friends together to catch the gunman before he finds his mark.

This fast-paced mystery is full of plot twists and red herrings which always makes for an intriguing read, but this author also uses quirky characters and humorous and witty dialogue to set it apart and it is very entertaining. Even though I had to catch up on the characters’ connections, I am interested in reading the next book to see how Corrie and her friends all move forward.

Overall, this is a well written mystery with a protagonist and secondary characters I would like to read about again.

Slightly Murderous Intent
By: Lida Sideris

REVIEW ☆☆☆☆

Slightly Murderous Intent (a bit of an oxymoron don't you think?) is part of A Southern California Mystery series by Lida Sideris. The story is a clever juxtaposition of the serious subject of murder against a light and entertaining cast of characters.

From the start, I had cozy mystery vibes regarding this book. The heroine is feisty, clever and unconventional. Dialogue is quick witted, conversational, straightforward and humorous. Additionally, character dynamics are relayed through these interactions, and despite not reading the previous books in the series, it is not difficult to get a sense of what came before the current tableaux.

The overall story is entertaining, fast paced, engaging and a bit of good old fashioned fun to read. With plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing, the mystery is not overly complex, nor is it obvious. The author maintains a balance of light and heavy aspects, and the story benefits from this. Slightly Murderous Intent is the perfect combination of substance, nonsense and loveable characters to keep readers wanting more.

Thank you Netgalley for the advance copy. This book has it all. It is amusing how a gunman out to kill keeps missing the target. It has great characters and has twists and turns. Corrie Locke and her boyfriend Michael and her friend Veera set out to find the gunman to keep their friend James safe from harm. Will they solve the mystery in time?

I really enjoyed the characters. It was amusing and fast paced but still had an element of a cozy Mystery. It reminded me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Definitely recommend.

Slightly Murderous Intent is a quirky mystery with plenty of twists and turns to throw you off the scent of the real culprit. I was surprised by the ending, though maybe I shouldn’t have been. I was also intrigued by the (I’m assuming) continuing story arc of the mystery surrounding Corrie’s dad’s death. It’s not a huge focus of this book but it clearly motivates her in her crime solving endeavors & stays at the back of her mind. It will be interesting to see how it ultimately plays out & who ends up being involved.

This is the first book in the Southern California Mystery series that I’ve read & I think maybe it would have helped to have read the other 3 books first. I had a difficult time connecting to the characters, and they all felt pretty one-dimensional. Again, maybe because I didn’t get to know them beforehand.

Bottom Line: Slightly Murderous Intent keeps mystery solvers hopping with surprising twists and multiple suspects. While I think it could have been tighter as far as length & content editing, and I wish the characters had felt more developed, overall it’s an entertaining story.

My second visit to the world of Corrie Locke was not what I expected. I really enjoyed how Corrie was a deadly weapon without a weapon in her hands in book 3. I was taken aback a bit by her seeming inability to deal with bad guys at the start.

The team of Corrie and Veera is superb. Their interaction and Veera's humor really carry the book well. The story is a well-crafted mystery that will keep many readers guessing as to what is really going on. The story has many twists and turns and most of them are satisfactorily explained.

Excellent as a stand alone and solid as part of the series. The team of PI's needs their own PI office and that makes me very eager to read the next book in this series. If you are a fan of classic whodunits in almost a 1940's film noir style, then this book is for you. A fun read.

I admit to not being a huge (modestly sized) fan of crime & thriller but these past few weeks I have read this wonderful and 2 others in the same genre and I am now a fan, maybe it’s the quirkiness and the humour in this book that makes its stand out for me but in these days pandemic and political doom and gloom a book that makes laugh is going to be a winner

With nonstop action and twists galore, this light mystery kept me entertained from beginning to end. Corrie's a delightful protagonist with a can-do attitude and a closet full of weaponry, which kept me wondering which trick she'd pull out of the bag next.

The writing style is fast generally well-paced with dialogue playing the starring role. While I love that writing style, there were a few times when I had to backtrack because the description of action was a little too sparse.

Overall, this is a solid entry in the light mystery genre with a strong female lead that can wield a shuriken as well as she can a pair of heels.

In this fun read, Corrie continues to vacillate between what should be a somewhat conventional job as a lawyer and her sense of adventure and aptitude for investigation. As a witness to the would-be assassin’s initial attempt to kill a member of the D.A. Office’s team, it is only natural she would insert herself into the investigation. After all, the potential targets include people she cares about.

She is aided in her search for the truth by Michael, her amazingly supportive boyfriend, and her uniquely skilled co-worker, Veera. Together they manage to figure out who did it what and why – and keep their friends alive. Of course, it’s not that simple, they face a variety of hurdles, near misses, false leads, and twists along the way. Narrated in a light conversational tone, this fast-paced mystery made for an entertaining read.

Slightly Murderous Intent by Lida Sideris is the 4th book in the Corrie Locke mysteries series, and another great book. I loved her earlier books in this series, and this one did not disappoint. Corrie Locke is an attorney who works for a movie studio, but was raised by her father, a well known private detective. Not only is this book laugh out loud funny, it has a great mystery also. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. If you love funny cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book. I am anxiously waiting for the next book in the series, and will be going back and reading the third book, which I somehow missed.

You’d think I’d know by now not to start in the middle of a series. This is book 4, and the characters and their relationships are well developed at this point. I could have used a little more background as I felt a bit lost in the beginning. The author jumped right in, and it took me a while to catch up. As with most series, the story itself stands on its own… its just those little things that round out the story that would have made more sense or been more fulfilling if I’d read the earlier books in the series.

So Corrie is our heroine. Her late father was a well-known PI, but she’s a lawyer who does some PI stuff on the side. In this case, she happens to be in a restaurant when there’s a shooting, and she jumps into action. She decides that she can’t leave the matter to the police and barrels into the mystery, stumbling around and basically gets lucky. She has her B-Team, as the blurb calls her friends, to support her efforts in solving the mystery. They add a lot of the comic relief in the story.

So, I have mixed feelings about this book. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. I have a feeling that if you’ve read the other books in the series, you’d probably enjoy this one more. I mean, I liked the concept, and I grew to like the characters, but the actual solving of the mystery was all over the place, and I was getting whiplash from it.

Would I read this author again? I don’t know. If I did, I’d definitely go start at the beginning of the series. Would I recommend the book? I think if you like a quirky cast of characters, this series might be for you.

About the Book:
All Corrie wanted was to get her food! When she goes to find the manager to complain about not getting her food during a celebration dinner, Corrie thwarts a shooting. It looks like after further review one of her buddies, Assistant Deputy DA James Zachery is the target. Corrie, her boyfriend, Michael, Veera, her legal assistant / friend and a cast of characters help find out who wants James snuffed out.

Five Reasons why I really liked this book:
-Corrie’s choice weapon is a throwing star
-Veera- she is my favorite character because she six feet tall and full on sassy
-the fact that this is the fourth in the series and even though this was the first book for me, I can go back and read the others in the series (I’ve of course already checked out their summaries)
-the mystery itself of the who and why someone was after James
AND the undertones of figuring out the mystery of Corrie’s dad’s death (he was a local PI)
-the dialogue which was fast moving and quick witted
Bonus Reason- I really like the way each title is named. (I’m quirky and I enjoy those kinds of details..what can I say!)

I’ve tried, but this book is just not for me.

I don’t like the main character; I don’t like the narration; I don’t like the dialogue. I’m sure the dialogue works better in audio or movie form, where you can just tune out of half of it.

I don’t like how Michael is constantly telling everyone who great Corrie is; I don’t like how Corrie has to check herself every time James looks her way.

I do like Abby. But this book is not about her.

I received an ARC through NetGalley.

This book opened with action and kept it going throughout. It was hard to put it down because I didn't want to miss a thing! The badass heroine's got skills and isn't afraid to use them. I loved the interaction between the heroine and her friends. They get along well and although sometimes get in each other's way without meaning to, they are a strong support system who take care of each other while solving an important crime. Loved the ending!

This is a case of dialogue overload, so if you manage to read this book without skipping a page or two, you are a very patient person. The book starts well, with some action, and the last part is great, with a very good pace. It's everything in between that's much too slow.
