Alex Hawk #4

Warrior of Kragdon-ah

Rate this book
Alex Hawk spent a decade trying to return from Kragdon-ah. Now he is safely back in the twenty-first century with daughters Amy and Sanda and his loyal, giant dog.

All is peaceful and good until, ten years later, Alex hears an incredible commotion in the basement where the door into time still stands safely behind a brick wall.

The wall has fallen. A giant warrior has stepped through and uttered four words in a language Alex has almost forgotten: "Manta-ak! We need you!"

Warrior of Kragdon-ah is the fourth book in the Alex Hawk Time Travel Adventure series. This time, Alex will not step through the door alone.

Keep them coming!

Great book again in this series, I found I couldn't put it down just as before. Can't wait for the next book in the series and hope it will continue from there instead of the series ending with the next book.

Great book

Alex Hawk just can’t seem to live a quiet life with his children. They gave grown into young ladies with great skills including the bow and katana. They have become an asset to the tribe and to Alex. But now a new enemy has come to the land and the tribe must fight for its very survival.

I had a hard time getting into the first book in the Alex Hawk series. But once I got through the first third of the book, I think at this point the world building was now in my mind, I have been tearing through the rest of the books. This was the fourth book and I have already started the fifth book in the series. These books just keep getting better, Warrior of Kragdon-ah was the best one so far. My biggest concern at this point is that time has moved forward by large leaps and I feel like Alex will die of old age if he writes another book and he will not continue the series.

I do have one minor issue, in the last book (this is a spoiler for Return from Kragdon-ah so if you have not read it please stop reading here, go read the first book if you have not read any yet as your starting point and enjoy this wonderful series.) The mysterious other group who sent him back, sent him back in time and restored him. Could they not have returned him with the cure earlier and saved his wife? I realize that maybe he would then have a hard time going back to get his daughter but I have to believe his wife would have agreed to come through the door with him at least long enough to raise his daughter. So thats my only issue with the end of the last book. Which of course leads into this one where he comes back 20 years latter. This is always the issue with time travel books, why should they let anyone die off when they could use the time travel device or whatever to save them.

Maybe we can convince Shawn to write an alternate timeline book where she is saved, brought back to our time and give us a book where she becomes the step mom to Alex's other daughter and all the fun things that would have happened with her living in our time! If you read these reviews imagine how much fun it would be to have her coaching the girls archery team! Dealing with moms who have only lived in the comforts that we have today.

OK so if you read the spoilers let me just finish with this, if you like any sort of adventure series where the hero goes on a journey and finds a new group of people to become lifelong friends then read this series. I think you will find as I have that its very satisfying to read.

Alex and his daughters, Amy and Sanda, are startled by the appearance of a friend

After 20 years, an unexpected friend was heralded by breaking down the wall Alex had built over the door to Kragdon-ah. The people of Winten-ah were in trouble. Defeated and seized by an invading army, the people of Kragdon-ah needed his help! Sanda and Amy have been trained by Alex to wild crafting and woods lore, in addition to fighting, hunting and surviving in the wilds of Oregon. They were fluent in the languages of Winten-ah and the common tongue of Kragdon-ah, and were excellent marksmen with most weapons. Amy was proficient with bows, while Sanda was better at hunting and fighting. The three returned to Kragdon-ah, prepared for the devastation they see. Their friends are captured and held by foreigners as slaves, prisoners in the shambles of their homes, caves or dwellings.

From an unexpected guest, they learn of a way to gain their freedom by defeating an enemy champion in whatever game or contest the enemy chose by challenging the invaders to Thundan. If won, the village would be free and safe for 5 years. If lost, they immediately surrendered to the invaders. Alex freed 3 villages in this manner before losing, but although he surrendered, he never gave up.

I loved watching Alex reuniting with his Kragdon-ah friends. The characters are familiar and still amazing. The newest characters, the two daughters of Alex, are as skilled as he in most of what is needed to survive this wild land. Besides the inherited abilities passed down from Alex, the girls are unique in their own ways and bring refreshing change to the storyline! And, of course, the storyline continues unbroken by the passing of twenty years. Much is the same, most is new. Old friends are older. New friends are able where abilities are needed. Alex has his work cut out for him, but he will persevere! This is a great read! And I can't wait for the next in the series!

Life long fan of Shawn Inmon’s works. I struggled mightily with the first Alex Hawk book until around the halfway point, but finished strong, and according to my reviews, really enjoyed the second and third books.

The characters in this universe are less complex than those from Middle Falls. I don’t want to call them caricatures, but Alex is brave and honorable above all else, and for a new character all I got from Amy was that she was strong and strategic. I appreciate the quests and the world building, but without the humor of Kradak, the characters seem to suffer a bit and make it more of a slog for me.

In the second and third books, we had small groups of characters who I was able to invest in. Here, we had the return after twenty years (the summary of the book implies it was only ten years inclusive, not including Alex’s ten year reset) so we had Alex meeting everyone he hadn’t seen in years, with little explanation within the plot to remind us who everyone was. This is on me, as I hadn’t read book three in a while and didn’t do my customary reread, but the names are all similar to each other, whole characters were named for characters in past books or even Alex and his wife, so at one point we had two people in the room with the same name. It was taxing to try to remember what happened when and where, and the cast was so large at times that I went through it without fully absorbing everything because it would have taken so long to constantly research.

A lot of this is on me, but I’m hoping book five will include a smaller core of characters on a quest I can keep track of.

Without even knowing there were more books to the series, I just knew something would happen to drag Alex back through the door. That he had been training his daughters their whole lives made for a great character addition. As usual, Alex tends to make stupid decisions at first; or, at least stupid reactions. But, now he has his two daughters to help push toward reasoning things out a little better. As for the plot, what would a primitive nativist tribe society story be without colonizers with higher technology than them. It's interesting to experience it from Alex's 21st century perspective. That said, it's still a hard pill to swallow that they refuse to employ the only realistic means they have to actually defeat the invaders. I'm sure the author will pull some miraculous victory out of Alex's butt, but let's be honest. It didn't work out so well for anyone else in actual history.

I started this on Audible from their Plus catalog. I had a tough time warming up to the MC because of several choices he made in this book and subsequent choices he made that were related. I felt like no matter how much he brow-beat himself for it the truth was that he DID abandon his daughter even were it not intentionally. His abandonment was the direct result of choices he made to satisfy his curiosity over his commitments. It made it very hard for me to warm up to him. I did, eventually, and in time he even redeemed himself in regard to said abandonment of daughter. But I was a very hard sell.

That said in terms of portal fantasy this entire series is totally bomb. I loved it and wish there were more of it.

Bulk input day.

I can't stand it

One thing after another. Yet another weird creature, plant, weapon, or plan. This author writes so clearly and provocatively the text demands a thorough and sustained effort from his reader. I'm awake far past my bedtime and still flipping pages because I have to know what happens next. About to start what must be the final sequel to all the other sequels and I just can't wait.
One can only assume Alex Hawke is some sort of god, if this were real life but on these pages my lightweight imagination will have to be enough.

A different kind of future!

Wow! This author has an excellent command of the written language. When a tribe member came through the doorway and sought his help to free his people from invaders, Alex was hesitant and shook his head no. But that all changed when his now grown daughters entered the doorway, unbeknownst by him at first. He knew he had to follow them. Alex and his daughters' adventures in Kragdon-ah is an exciting and enthralling read. If you like time travel adventure stories, I'd recommend this book from this author.

Wonderful!

What a great continuation of this series. When I read the preview for it I just couldn't imagine Alex bringing his two daughters with him to Kragdon-ah. But now that we know that they are both there and have been through so much adventure with him, I would have to say that I'm glad they are with him. I will find the next few months difficult waiting for the next book which will conclude the story.

Well worth the time

Throughly enjoying this book series. I have invested in the characters and can relate to the appeal of living in a tech free world. I'm sure there are some shockers in store. I'm looking forward to continuing with them on their adventure. A different take on time travel well worth the effort.

Alex and his daughters return to Kragdon-ah, and just in time for Alex to resume his role as Hero. This time the girls also prove their mettle.

I was delighted when I found out that there would be another Alex Hawk book. This one does not disappoint...until the end of it when you realize you have to wait months for another one of Shawn’s books to come out.

Mistakes: I didn't find anything wrong with this book.

Plot: How do you right an unstoppable army? With life of death challenges of honor.

Characters: Once again this is a character driven story.

I didn't think I would like this series, however once I started book one I was hooked. Alex is truly a superhero. His adventures are so interesting due to the fantastic writing of Shawn. I highly recommend this series.

In this book, Alex goes back to the future when someone goes to the past to get his help. This time, Amy (the daughter he had before going to the future) and Senda (the daughter he had in the future) go with him. The book is full of new adventures and troubles.

I found it to be the continuing adventure of Alex in Kragdon Ah. The fights and perils seem familiar but the cliffhanger at the end is worth the read.
