Helena, Montana crime reporter turned antique store owner Lucy Mathews has to get her meddling mother off a murder charge in book 6 of this well-written, enjoyable mystery series.
Lucy’s parents have snuck into town a month ahead of schedule to participate in a beef cook-off. Lucy’s relationship with her mother is complicated at best (her mother can’t stop meddling in her life and Lucy can’t stop resenting her). Lucy wasn’t looking forward to their scheduled visit anyway, but now she’s hurt because they’re staying in town and not with her, which she takes to mean her notoriously cheap father is paying money to avoid seeing her. More than her feelings get hurt when one of her mother’s competitors turns up dead, and, of course, her mother finds the body.
I think I must have missed a book in the series, but the author does a skillful job of conveying what went on in previous books, so I felt like I had enough of the backstory to easily follow the current plotline. Lucy is a character I can relate to, and I felt like I was catching up with an old friend.
I so enjoy this series. The author does a great job of setting the scenes and conveying complex human emotions. There’s a nice balance of learning about what goes on in an antique store, Lucy’s personal life, her relationship with a local lawman, the mystery of the day, and life with a Malamute. This is a pleasant, engaging series. The story held my interest all the way through, and was a soothing, enjoyable read. I will read more in this series.
I read the other books in this series some years ago and somehow missed that this (final?) one had come out. I loved all of the previous books and I don't know if it was just because it's been a while but this one didn't really do it for me to begin with. It didn't take too long to get into though and I thought it worked well as an easy read for a lazy afternoon. I do enjoy these stories with Lucy, her handful of a dog, and her boyfriend Peter. There was a loose end or two that was tied up here which makes me think that this might be the last in the series. Bit of a shame, but it was a nice way to finish.
This was a welcome addition to my Dusty Deals collection. I forgot how much I enjoyed Lucy and her exploits. It isn't a tough read, passes the time and it a nice, simple distraction.
