Amber finally makes the decision to get out of the toxic relationship with her abuser, Peter. She quietly puts her apron away and walks out of work, checks her gas tank, and leisurely drives away. She has no intention of ever trusting another man. This was a hard lesson learned. When her gas tank is almost empty, she pulls into a small local store to consider her options. She has no money, no job, and no place to stay for the night. The clerk said she could sleep in her car and he would not have her towed, but there was no offer of food. But as she walked away, the man behind her, Granite, offered a small extra room he had which would provide her a safe place to sleep. He fills her tank with gas and she follows him to the cabin he built. He gives her food, shows her the spare room, and heads to his room to sleep.

Just as Granite is drifting off, Amber screams and he runs to her and holds her as she fights him. She finally awakens and apologizes, then asks him to stay with her. As she falls asleep with her head on his chest, he knows he is in trouble as his feelings for her deepen.

Granite told her about his love for his wife who had died in a car accident, and she knew he was a kind and good man. As they sit by a bonfire that evening, identifying the constellations, he reaches out to push her hair back and she jumps out of reach in panic! He gently asks her to talk to him, to let him in and tell him who hurt her like this. He reaches out his hand, and finally she takes it. They sit down again and she tells him what Peter did to her and that she cannot allow him to find her again. As she plants a garden for him and they share so much time together, they relationship begins to get more serious. Granite finally asks her to stay with him forever and, instead of having to think about it as he had expected, she immediately answered yes. But when they went into town together, everyone seems to be whispering and a friend told him that her ex had filed a missing person report. The police were searching for her and, even worse, Peter knows where she is! He waits to find her alone and attacks. Will Granite be able to save her? Will he survive when Peter plunges a garden tool into Granite’s side?

Granite retreated to the mountains to escape reminders of his past and his wonderful wife. Amber was just trying to escape from the cruelty of her ex, and instead found comfort, peace, and love. Both of them found healing in the other. Would Peter take that away from them? Or will they be able to find the future together that they both deserve?

This is my first book by this author and I picked it up because I love short romances and I never shy away from discovering new authors. This was sweet with some steam and the story is mostly about Amber and Granite finding exactly what they needed even when they weren't looking for it. Both escaped to the mountains from different things and I liked seeing them open up to each other. I had a hard time with some of the timeline and how some things were resolved however. I can't say what or it will give it away but I found some things odd and left me confused. There is also some suspense that adds to the tension and actually made me wanting to find out more so I will be picking up the next book.

Amber finally decides to leave her abusive boyfriend once and for all. She filled her gas tank and is determined to drive as far as she can. When her gas runs out she goes into a small store hoping to get help. As she is leaving, Granite offers her his spare room. She goes with him and day by day they get closer. Her ex, Peter shows up to cause trouble, but Granite throws him out. Amber is alone gardening when Peter comes back to attack her. Granite finds them in the woods and fights Peyer and wins, but is injured. Amber screams and cries for help and a man named Clay helps by carrying Granite back to the cabin. Like the spin and the storyline. Wish there was a bit more and an epilogue.

Amber is on the run from her abusive ex when Granite agrees to let her stay with him so she has a safe place to stay for the night. Granite’s protectiveness and caring instincts win Amber over as he vows to keep her safe. Their attraction grows as they work together at his cabin & soon they are burning up the sheets. When Amber’s ex finds her, Granite will have to work fast to save her and gets help from an unlikely source. This ends with a HFN and a cliffhanger about Granite’s past coming back to haunt him.

I liked how the story began with Amber and her situation. The story quickly progressed while we learned more about Amber, Granite and the darkness in both of their pasts. The few details revealed about both characters helped me picture some of who they were/are. What a whirlwind encounter and match! The suspense kept me reading on while the cliffhanger ending raised more questions. I did miss reading more details or depth to situations involving all the characters -perhaps that is yet to come in the next novel. An enjoyable quick read with a satisfying end and bridge to the next story

The author has given us characters we can care about. Granite lives in the mountains alone so that he does not have to encounter reminders of his past. When he sees Amber, he offers her a place to stay and has no idea why he did. As they spend time together, they each share their past and realize that they want a future together.

A fantastic start to this new series Mountain Hero Warrior series. This is the story of Amber and Granite. Amber is starting over and getting away from her abusive ex. Granite sees her in the gas station and he becomes very protective of her and knows that he shouldn't. Will these two get their happy ending? The story is full of emotions and will keep you interested till the end. Looking forward to read more from this series.

Not Realistic

Although I love short reads and romance, they still have to be well written and believable. It was very obvious the author has no experience with a toxic or abusive relationship, as the heroine would never had acted like she did if she was running from one. In addition the flow was choppy and editing was poor. Although I finished the book, I am in no way interested in reading the rest of the series or anything else by this author.

Pretty good book with drama and plenty of heat. Amber is running for her life from her ex boyfriend and winds up in the mountains, out gas, money and no place to stay. In steps Granite to offer assistance. He's had a hard time as well since he lost his wife in a crash. HEA and surprise at the end.

Cliff hanger...

My first read by this author...not impressed. The story line got lost several times...important information was often left out all together. Too many unbelievable things. A large number of editing mistakes. And the writing was stiff, too stilted. I won't bother with this writer again.

Spoiler alert

I'm curious. What happened to the guy's body? I feel that was a huge part of the story not answered. They never called the police? That and then the ghost/ dead brother plot twist? Just too much. Is the supposedly dead wife still alive too? Just too much of a reach for me. Shame too because the H was a really nice guy.

This was a quick read. Alot happens in this story. For such a quick read I was surprised by how much you learn. I didn't realize this was a series book, so I am happy to know there will be a bit more with these characters.
