Sunrise Valley #1

Love in the Aisles

Rate this book
On a scale from one to ten on the epic failure charts, Charlotte Dawson’s day just passed an eleven.

The last thing Charlotte wants to do is go to the supermarket, but with a four-year-old to feed, she doesn’t have a choice. Just when she thinks she’s free and clear of marketplace drama, Charlotte finds herself in the throes of a hide-and-seek game with the nosiest woman in town. And if that wasn’t enough to add to her bad day, the hot new bag guy catches her hiding out…in the liquor section…on a Sunday in the South. But she can’t formulate the words to tell him to get lost. In fact, she can’t speak at all once she gazes into those hazel eyes.

Having been ditched at the altar by his long-term girlfriend, Hollywood sensation Ian ‘Cleary’ Tate escapes to Sunrise Valley for one reason—peace. Serving as a temporary apprentice under his stepfather at Adler’s Market is the perfect cover—nothing says redefining his life like a little manual labor. Until he runs into a problem…Charlotte Dawson, the widow of the town’s biggest hero. He in no way expected to develop a fascination with the bumbling, yet refreshing, young mom, who just so happens to have the grace of a one-legged chimpanzee.

In a series of unexpected encounters between the aisles of the supermarket and the gossip-filled streets of Sunrise Valley, Charlotte and Ian get to know one another, Georgia style—all under the watchful eyes of a group of meddling old women known as the GOLs (Gossiping Old Ladies).

It’s not easy falling in love after heartbreak, but Ian and Charlotte have a chance at exactly that…if Ian’s secret Hollywood fame and Charlotte’s former life don’t get in the way first.

Charlotte Dawson is having a bad day. She shops at Alder Market on Tuesdays specifically to avoid running into Ruby Pearl, the most judgmental of the gossipy old ladies in town and her biggest non-fan. In an effort to avoid the woman, she takes refuge in the liquor section only to run into (literally) the new bag man, Ian Cleary, who is a gorgeous redhead with the most adorable freckles. Despite her klutziness, Charlotte makes as great an impression on Ian as he does to her. Over the next few weeks, these two make a connection between the aisles that has them instantly falling for each other despite their complicated issues. She’s a young widow with a four-year old son and he’s an Oscar winning Hollywood actor secretly hiding out in Sun Valley pretending to be his mother’s nephew.

The bones of this story were highly promising, which is what intrigued me to give it a try. I loved the idea of a romance developing in a grocery market from awkward encounters. Charlotte and Ian were in their late twenties and their wildly differing backgrounds made them potentially interesting characters. Unfortunately, their stories read more like the romance between two high school teens and for that, I'm not the target audience. The dialogue missed the mark completely and their reactions to conflict, especially Charlotte’s, were immature and often tiresome.

The setting for the story is in Georgia and it didn’t miss trading on the most superficial of southern traditions. I’m familiar with them having lived in the South for many years so the references fell flat. Gossipy older women are a staple but the women in this story weren’t charming but downright vicious. A wonderful opportunity for a side angle was missed here, too. Again, I’m the wrong audience as others reviewing the story had better experiences so I’d compare them before making a decision. Because buried among my disappointments were some really good situational issues for two strong, very likable characters who kept me in the story.

3.5/5 stars (rounded up to 4)

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Southern hospitality turned into hostility when Charlotte Dawson married Jake, the hero of Sunrise Valley. Accused of breaking up his previous relationship, Charlotte had to put up with the constant judgmental looks from the townspeople. However, things got much worse after Jake died, leaving Charlotte alone with their son and her sister. Things change when Charlotte meets Ian, the newest employee at the local grocery store. He doesn’t seem to mind her clumsiness and he’s super attractive. Charlotte starts to consider being in a relationship again, but she struggles to ignore the harsh insults from the townspeople. Not to mention, Ian has secrets of his own, like the fact he’s a famous actor who ran away from Hollywood…

The premise of this book sounded adorable so I couldn’t resist reading it! Charlotte is a widowed young mom, just trying to get by. Unfortunately, the GOLs (gossipy old ladies) won’t leave her alone. I loved Charlotte’s character development; she’s come a long way from playing hide-and-seek in grocery stores! Ian is also a great character and he really helped Charlotte get her life back on track. As much as I loved this adorable duo, there were some things that bothered me. Charlotte is definitely a klutz, but I think it’s a bit overdone in this book. The number of incidents she has is a little excessive. It was also a total insta-love which I’m not completely against but it felt like the characters saw each other for two seconds and fell for each other immediately. Other than that, this was cute and I enjoyed it!

I’d recommend it to rom-com lovers who like fluff with a bit of angst! This is pretty much a clean romance (nothing sexual besides a cheating reference and minimal language) so if you’re a clean romance lover then check this out!

Such a cute story!

We are introduced to single-mom Charlotte and her adorable son while on a last minute grocery store run for fruit rollups. While there, Char meets Ian Cleary who is working at the store. While trying to get away from the gorgeous "bag man", Charlotte leaves a lasting impression.

While Ian tries to swoon an accident prone Charlotte, he is dealing with the aftermath of being left at the alter in a Hollywood style wedding. Will Ian Cleary, who is really Ian Tate the award winning actor, choose to return California or stay in the little town he is slowing coming to love?

I voluntarily read this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Unfortunately this book didn't work for me (however, seeing all the good reviews, I seem to be in the minority, so be sure to read other reviews before deciding!).

The story was set in a small village, where Charlotte, a widowed with a four-year-old, meets gorgeous Ian and falls instantly in love with him (to the point of not being able to utter a word even before they first speak - this kind of insta-love doesn't really work for me). They start knowing each other and they have to put up with the GOLs (gossippy old ladies) of the town (which were also a bit much for my liking).

As a good point. I liked a lot a secondary character, Charlotte's sister.

What a cute small town romance! It is simply not poor Charlotte's day...or year for that matter. Meddling old ladies make this widowed mom's life miserable, but the good-looking ginger bagging groceries is about to change all of that! This comedic story is full of heart and soul, complete with a small town diner and symbolic pineapples! (It's a Southern thing.) I laughed and swooned as I rooted on Charlotte and Ian. Very sweet setting for finding love!

"Thank you for making me feel like I matter. For making me feel like I deserve something beyond the life I’ve come to accept."

The last place Charlotte expected to find love was in the booze aisle of the grocery store on a sunday while hiding from a mean old lady, more so when she was not even looking for love. But it would seem that love found her and in the form of a sexy Hollywood actor Ian Tate.

••

"Oh God... that Cupid’s arrow stabbed me in the heart and made me bleed with swoon."

Coming to Sunrise Valley was supposed to be to get over being left at the altar in front of all of Hollywood and to spend some time with his mum, the last thing Ian expected was to fall in love with clumsy single mum Charlotte and her cute soon Jake. But with each cute klutzy interaction Ian fell more and more in love with small town life and Charlotte. But what happens when Hollywood come knocking wanting their star actor back and threatening to blow up his perfect happily ever after?

••

“I know it’s crazy. We’ve only known each other for a couple for weeks, but God... you’re all I think about. You’re in me, sweetness. Buried so deep I couldn’t get you out if I tried. And believe me, I don’t want to try.”

This has to be one if the best romcoms that I have read all year! I loved every single second of Charlotte and Ian's love story. There were so many things to love about this book; the super cute relationship that Ian had with his mum and stepdad and the way they helped him court Char, the cute little unit that Char and her sister formed and Jake and his cute nickname for Ian; Freckles.

••

"Her smile lit up my world, and I found myself staring at it again. Her cheeks were as pink as her lips."

I absolutely loved the awkward klutzy encounters that lead Ian and Char to falling in love and their dates going upside down. My only issue was that Char didn't stand up to the mean GOLs. Though I do have to say the ending was swoon worthy!

••

Love in the Aisle is definitely a stand out small town romcom that I would strongly recommend all romance readers should pick up!

Love in the Aisles is such a sweet contemporary romance with characters you cannot help but to fall in love with. If a sweet romance is what you are looking for, Love in the Aisles is just for you.

Charlotte is a recent, well not too recent, widow of the town's “hero”. Charlotte may be his widow but that does not mean anything to this small Georgia town. My only concern with Charlotte was her lack of backbone. I mean the way she lets some of the people in this book walk over her just made my blood boil. Granted I know this is a book but still, Charlotte is the sweetest and deserves the world after everything she has been through.

Ian is a famous celebrity trying to escape Hollywood after his bride leaves him at the altar. The place that makes perfect sense for him to hide just happens to be the same small Georgia town as Charlotte. As Ian is trying to fit into his role as “Ian Tate” by working as a stocker in his step-father’s grocery store, he sets his eyes on Charlotte. Neither knowing their lives will never be the same.

Charlotte and Ian are in no way looking for any form of relationship but they cannot deny the chemistry they have. Or can they? Both Charlotte and Ian have things they need to address with themselves before thinking of any type of relationship. I was able to connect with both Charlotte and Ian which made reading this gem all the much better. I was a bit aggravated with Charlotte not having a backbone but her reasons are valid to a point. I would have liked to see Charlotte “let go” so to speak a bit more. As for Ian, he was nowhere near perfect either. He could have handled certain things a bit better than the way he did but he is a man (LOL).

Overall, I loved reading this sweet gem and was sad to see it end. I think it is worth all the one-clicks it receives. Heather and Jessica have written a wonderful wordy creation that will keep in hooked from beginning to end.

Meet Charlotte Dawson: widow, mom, sister, waitress, and enemy of the GOL. What’s not to love about the main character in this cute romance? Everything, according the the Gossiping Old Ladies of Sunrise Valley. Enter Ian (Cleary) Tate. From his initial run in with Charlotte, he’s smitten.

This romance was one I couldn’t put down. Normally, I enjoy a bit more lust in my romances, but the ease with which Heather Van Fleet and Jessica Calla guide you through the relationship between Charlotte and Ian make you forget all about it. There is so much spark and charisma between the two characters you can almost feel it. I even felt a flutter once or twice. Ian has a way with words and I found myself wishing I was his one and only “Sweetness.”

I loved that the heroin in this book was a widow and single mom working a blue collar job and was able to snatch the movie star with her heart and grace. Watching Charolette gain confidence and sticking up for herself made my heart warm almost as much as reading about her snagging Ian.

I will say this book was a bit on the cheesy side and slightly predictable but I loved it non the less. Highly recommend Love in the Aisles to anyone looking for a heartwarming, light read that will keep you flipping pages and cheering Charlotte on! 5/5 stars for me!

Thank you NetGalley and Heather Van Fleet for gifting me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
When Hollywood Hunk Ian Tate is dumped at the altar he escapes to his parent’s in the small town of Sunrise Valley for a break before his next movie starts. Ian changes not only his appearance but also his name in order to hide his famous identity. He never planned on meeting Charlotte Dawson, the beautiful and sweet single mother who seems out of place in the Georgia town. Outsider Charlotte Dawson married Sunrise Valley’s most eligible bachelor, upsetting most of the town and creating enemies out of the town’s older population. When he dies of cancer, Charlotte decides to stay in the small town, anyways, despite the daily bullying she endures. Their chemistry is instant and soon Ian’s secret is getting too hard to keep.
I blew through this one, knocking out 60% of the book before I looked up for a snack break. Their chemistry was instant and bot characters were relatable and likeable. The only thing keeping this from being a solid 5 star romance for me, was the sometimes unrealistic “fluff”. I am not a fan of the cheesy, overly sappy romance type in real life or in books so that opinion is 100% a personal one. Granted there wasn’t too much of that in here and if you’re a true romance fan you’ll probably love all of the sweet moments peppered throughout the dialogue!
This is a clean, instant love romance that will work as the perfect palate cleanser after a heavier book!

I am reminded of the song Love at the Five & Dime by Nanci Griffith. "And they waltzed the aisles of the five and dime". You don't know when or where you find love. It could be a chance encounter. Your hands meet while reaching for the can of coffee and love blooms. This is a simple romance of a widowed mom and the movie star mending a broken heart. Charlotte is goofingly awkward but delightful. Ian is rediscovering his freckles, red-hair, whose Hollywood sheen is burning off in the Georgia sunshine. Small towns have their gossips who are the foils to the widowed mom trying to find her way after the favorite son has gone. Ian can't shake the drama of movie star gossip. But, in the aisles of the local market, their broken-hearts find each other and mend. Will the gossips get the best of Charlotte? Will the lure of Hollywood reclaim Ian? You will need to read this book on a long weekend on a crisp fall day to discover if love heals old wounds.

Klutzy, widowed, waitressing, single mother living in a small town while trying to steer clear of the GOL of Sunrise Valley, Georgia. Ginger-haired, freckled-faced bag man at Adler’s who’s new in town. A series of unfortunate events that involve Charlotte calling attention to herself when all she really wants is to blend in with the woodwork has Ian half in love from the moment they first met.

This book was funny with many laugh out loud moments, cringe-worthy “I can’t believe that happened” moments, and many moments of wanting to tell off those old biddies for Charlotte’s sake. It was worth spending the last half hour of my lunch break reading instead of watching Netflix or mindlessly scrolling instagram.

I received an advance copy of this book at my request and voluntarily left this review.

The book for readers who love Hallmark movies!

Widow Charlotte Dawson was at the grocery store with her son Jake playing hide-n-seek to avoid Ruby Pearl who was the leader of the Sunrise Valley’s gossipy old ladies AKA GOLs who always put her down because she had married Jonah, the town’s golden boy. Charlotte almost ran down Ian Cleary who was the new bag boy, so she ran out of the store to avoid him. Little did Charlotte know that Ian was movie star Ian Tate hiding out in Sunset Valley after his fiancé left him at the altar staying with his mom and stepdad.

This a romance that would make a perfect Hallmark movie because you have a movie star who changed his looks and a widow that the GOLs pick on because they think she broke up Sunrise Valley perfect couple.

This is the 1st in a new series from this talented duo, and this is a wonderful introduction. Ian is a famous Hollywood actor who is jilted at the alter and he escapes to the small town to get some peace, and is working at his step-dads supermarket as an apprentice, which is the perfect cover for him. Charlotte is a widow with a 4-year old and is just trying to make ends meet away from the judgemental town folk, and when she is trying to avoid one of them she meets Ian in the alcohol section in the shop. This is a beautifully written entertaining story which had me totally enthralled throughout this addictive page turner, and I highly recommend for all readers.

Charlotte is a young mum who is widowed and in the town where she lives there are mean old gossips that won’t leave her alone. Then she meets Ian and they are both instantly smitten with each other.
Even though the story was a little bit predictable, I still loved everything about it. It’s a very heartwarming book that will keep you wanting what’s best for Charlotte all the way through to the end.....

I loved this book. I must warned you that this is the epitome of instalove though, and as much as I usually hate that trope, this was amazing.
Our main characters are adorable and quirky and so endearing i just couldn't help myself and fall for them. I must say though that some parts felt like could have been left out like some unnecessary drama with an ex but overall it was a nice cute little romance.
My favorite part was towards the end, I laughed out loud. It was that hilarious.
Fully recommend this feel good book for this holidays.

The book is the definition of a romance. It is on the cheesy side of romances but it doesn’t take away from the story. The authors skillfully switch between Charlotte and Ian’s point of view allowing the reader to see into the minds of both characters. This is the kind of story that will leave you smiling. I recommend this book for any romance lover.

Love In The Aisles is a small town sweet romance between a widowed single mom and an actor in hiding. I love Heather Van Fleet's book and Jessica Calla is a new author to me. I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of Heather Van Fleet and Jessica Calla's upcoming book Love in the Aisles which honestly would make the best Hallmark movie! It is a sweet love story about an A-list actor hiding out in rural Georgia after a public humiliation and meeting the love of his life and her little boy in his step-father's grocery store on her very worst day. The small town and its characters are as richly developed as the main characters and you can't help but root for Ian and Charlotte to fall in love and live happily ever after.

I really enjoyed this one right from the beginning. I felt for Charlotte. I even had second hand embarrassment on her behalf. I loved the characters though the busy body ladies I was not a huge fan of. I didn't like how they treated Charlotte. I loved Charlotte's little boy Jake. He was so adorable. I loved the banter between Ian and Charlotte. They both deserve to find a HEA. Ian is nursing a broken heart and Charlotte is trying to find the bravery of moving on. This book gives me all the small town quirkiness I love, but also with a ton of heart and humor. I did laugh a lot through out this book. I would recommend this one especially if you're looking for a feel good, fun light read.

This is a great read and delivers exactly upon what's promised. You can read the summary of what the story is about, but from a reader's perspective it has exactly the right balance of angst, love, infatuation, and throw in a dash of humor. Sometimes you will cringe with embarrassment for the characters and other times you'll pump your fist in victory. Jessica and Heather do an amazing job of providing very distinct voices and unique perspectives.

Get this book. It will leave you happy. :-)

This book reminded me of a Hallmark movie! The small town setting was so quaint and the perfect location for two people to fall in love. A single mother is trying to live her life taking care of her child after her husband passed away at an extremely young age. A movie star is living in the small town to try and escape a failed relationship and trying to stay undercover. I loved the chemistry and how they both had to learn to navigate something that was so new. I really enjoyed the freshness of it all and how they managed to navigate the new relationship.

Thank you to NetGalley, the authors, and Xpresso Book Tours for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really cute love story that got me out of my book slump

I would recommend if you're looking for

-friends to lovers
-small town romance
-celebrity in hiding
-single, widower mother
-flirting with a pineapple
-a heck of a hook of a first kiss
-slow burn
-insta love
-opposites attract

There is very little steam to this book. A completely closed door romance, this book is all about holding hands, and sweet kisses. This is a sweet story of two people finding their second chance in life, in a place that neither expected to end up. My favorite part may have been the secondary characters. Charlotte's ex-mother in law was not her enemy but an ally, same with Ian's step-father. Characters who are usually considered villains. It was a wonderful change of pace.

While I do struggle with insta romances, I appreciated that this book kept on from the insta love moment and grappled with the couple's struggles. I do wish Charlotte had more of a head on moment with the GOLs who were real bullies to me.

There was also clearly more going on with Charlotte's sister so I hope we get another book to see what was going on with her.

Charlotte Dawson is a woman who has been dealt a raw deal when it comes to love. Ian Cleary is coming off being a jilted groom with a huge secret. I fell in love with Jake and Laila, they were the perfect addition to this story. This was my first read from this author and I loved it, it won't be my last.

I received this book complimentary from NetGalley but all opinions are my own.
This was really cute though I thought the plot points were a bit basic. I also am over the whole simple secret being kept from the other person. I didn’t like that Charlotte didn’t stand up for herself but I did like Charlotte and Ian as characters. They were sweet and kind. I also loved the epilogue. I love getting a more rounded out version of the story.

Imagine meeting someone, moving to their town, marrying them, having a child with them, and then dealing with the comments from the community after your spouse dies. Well that is what Charlotte is dealing with. The seniors of the town, are full of opinions. After all, Charlotte married their favorite son, and she "stole" him away from another woman. How dare she!

Charlotte is trying to stay strong though. Although is is also trying to avoid all the people that she can. Going to the grocery store is not something she looks forward to, but it's a necessity. On this trip she meets a the new employee, Ian. Ian has recently moved to the town, and is living under cover. He is a celebrity who was just left at the alter. He needs to heal, and escape his reality. Never did he expect to fall for someone. Yet he isn't fighting it.

I absolutely loved this story, and cannot wait for the next in the series. Charlotte and Ian are adorable. Yes they have their moments where you just want to smack them both upside the head, but such is the way of most rom-com slash hallmark-esque books. (and I love it) Definitely a series I will continue with, and I look forward to reading more from the authors.
