Maybe your head knows that God is always good, but your heart’s not so sure. Or perhaps while reading Scripture, you’ve wondered if our Creator Redeemer went through a personality change—from strictly enforcing the rules in the Old Testament to loving the outcast in the New.
In this 7-session Bible study, you’ll discover divine love in the often overlooked and misunderstood passages. And you’ll be delighted to find that Jehovah of the Old Testament is the same redemptive and compassionate God we see through Jesus Christ in the New Testament. He has always been and will always be for us! Note that video access is not included with the purchase of this Bible study book. To view the 7 enriching teaching videos for this study (approximately 30–40 minutes per session), please purchase the How Much More leader kit.
Lisa Harper is a hilarious storyteller and theological scholar―a gifted communicator whose writing and speaking overflows with colorful, pop-culture references that connect the dots between the Bible era and modern life. “Her God-given ability to not merely teach the Word but package it in a way that stirs the heart and calls to action is incomparable” says Priscilla Shirer. For six years Lisa served as the director of Focus on the Family's national women's ministry where she created the popular Renewing the Heart conferences. The next six years found her serving on the local level as the women's ministry director at a large church in Nashville. As the author of eleven books, and a Masters of Theological Studies with honors from Covenant Seminary, she is now a sought-after Bible teacher and speaker. Lisa was on the Women of Faith national arena tour and speaks at many other large events as well as at hundreds of churches all over the world. Lisa describes her greatest accomplishment to date as getting to be Missy’s mama.
Let me say I love Lisa Harper's books and her video's and her humor. But even though I have studied the Bible myself many years, I did not connect with this study at all. She over used her seminary vocabulary and was basically speaking over the head of any average reader. She has the knowledge which is great but she didnt make it relatable to readers who might not have studied the Bible much. She should have used her seminary knowledge and brought it down so any reader could understand. She used hard seminary words in places they were not needed. This study says it's for ages 18+ but I don't think any 18 yr old would understand her college level words. Maybe next Bible study she could take more time to make it relatable to all readers.
This was a more traditional Bible study, question and answer format than I had hoped. I did not purchase the additional videos, as that seemed like too much after purchasing the book. There were some parts of helpful insight and I enjoyed some of the more intellectual pieces a lot. Overall, the author I and I don't share the same sense of humor and I had a hard time seeing how each of the sections were connected to the whole.
I love Lisa Harper and her Bible studies. You could tell, however, that she was studying for her doctorate because the study/videos were full of complex thoughts. This was a little more advanced than I am! I did enjoy the study and will definitely do any additional ones she might release.
The latest book from Lisa Harper, and the latest pick for our ladies Bible study at church. We've done several of her studies, usually on books of the Bible versus a general, vague them of "How Much More" God loves us. While I appreciated all of those examples, I struggled with any cohesive thoughts from this study. It was all over the map, jumping around willy-nilly. I need a structure and cohesiveness from page to page, week to week, in a study like this, with a tenuous at best foundation. Not my favorite of hers, and I hope that our group leaders do not choose another of her studies.
This was such an eye opening Bible study and definitely one I will look back at in the future to see what other lessons come as I have new life experiences. The questions, videos, and directions to Scripture make you slow down to really absorb and appreciate what you are reading, especially for people like me who tend to fly through books.
Lisa Harper is a funny and poignant storyteller and that’s what I liked most about this study. But I had problems with the study’s organization and the theme did not plainly carry over from week to week for me.
On one hand, the video sessions were hands down some of the best I've ever seen. Lisa Harper is hysterical, relatable, and so very passionate about our God and His great love for us. I also really enjoyed the way she brought a 21st-century perspective to some of the bible stories (particularly Hosea and Gomer). It reminded me a bit of Liz Curtis Higg's Bad Girls of the Bible series. The homework was manageable (a big plus in my book) and often insightful.
But...
Overall, the study lacked a sense of coherency. Often the video sessions didn't relate to the homework and at times even the individual days of homework in each week didn't seem to relate to each other. By week five, I learned to look for an overall theme for the week. Some were easy - week one was the Sabbath and week two was slavery. Others - like week five, which I would say was the Holy Spirit - were much harder to pinpoint.
The study also seemed to veer back and forth between being very accessible (the aforementioned 21st-century perspective being a great example) and being doctoral-thesis-level confusing. This made some of the questions difficult to interpret. The final review session, which I was really looking forward to, fell flat for me because I struggled with main three questions she asked (which were the same for each week).
On the whole, I would say the positives of this study outweigh the negatives. There's so much to appreciate about it. I would definitely be open to doing another Lisa Harper study in the future, I just hope that it's a little easier on this poor exhausted mama's brain.
This journey has been amazing! We had our last gathering today. I love how Lisa has dived into the Word: Old Testament and New Testament, showing us -- the audience -- how much more God's love story is for us. Personal connection. There's tons of information, theology, and also prayer time. I liked how the sessions were divided and helped me purposefully dedicate time with God. The quiet moments to listen when the Holy Spirit speaks. Lisa always points to the Bible. Lisa always points to Jesus.
We all need His merciful reminder how much He adores us. Thank you!
I bought the book in our church bookstore not realizing (or seeing) it had videos to go along with it. I read the book any way, without finding the videos. I like the way she ties things in with stories and uses humor throughout them. I used the questions after each chapter as a reflection for me to answer and grow from.
While this is not a study of one book of the Bible, Lisa shows how both testaments work together to point us to Jesus and the amazing love story He has for us. My Bible Study group enjoyed this study.
No matter how many verses we’ve highlighted in our Bibles, if we aren’t actively loving our neighbors, then we’re kidding ourselves about about being Christlike. The bottom line is, our theology must inform our sociology.
Christ’s love for us is unconditional. “There are no butts in Love!”
I felt the "arc" of the study confusing. A lot of jumping around with not a lot of cohesion. I love me some Lisa Harper and have done at least 4 of her studies. This was my least favorite.
