Anna Celeste Burke is an awarding-winning, USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling author!
Welcome! Join me, snooping into life's mysteries with fun, fiction, and food--California style!

Life is an extravaganza and so unpredictable! Figuring out how to hang tough and make the most of the wild ride is the challenge.

On my way to Oahu to join the rock musician and high school drop-out I married in Tijuana, I was nabbed by the police as a runaway. When the police let me go and the rock band broke up, my husband and I had to find another way to survive. Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University.

A GED for my husband, and many more years of education eventually landed us in academia—with Ph.D.s from the University of Michigan we took professor jobs with U of M’s longstanding football rival, The Ohio State University.

Retired now from my role as a professor in social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. In my professional career I wrote and published widely as a scholar, with more than forty manuscripts of varying lengths on my vita. I also carried out hundreds of training, consulting and speaking engagements on a number of gloriously nerdy topics.

So what on earth does a research scientist have in common with a mystery writer? As avid fans of the mystery genre will tell you at the core of any good mystery is a passionate search for the truth. Discovering the truth involves finding and assembling pieces of complex puzzles in order to solve seemingly intractable problems—scientist and sleuth are cut from the same cloth!

Still married to the same sweet guy, I live with my husband in one of the seven desert resort cities in the Palm Springs area. In addition to reading and writing mysteries I enjoy painting, hiking, hanging out with my handsome husband and tending to my Siamese cats.

The Sonoran Desert is a beautiful setting to ponder life’s mysteries, by the surrounding mountains and the bountiful delights of the desert resort communities. I hope you enjoy reading the books in my three cozy mystery series: The Jessica Huntington Desert Cities Mystery Series, The Corsario Cove Cozy Mystery Series, and the Georgie Shaw Cozy Mystery Series. Cheers! Anna

Muriel and her friend Ophelia have their own popular cooking show, and Muriel is also a witch. When one of the staff is murdered at the TV studio, Muriel is determined to find out what is going on, especially since it seems as if something supernatural may be behind this murder, and other similar ones. I enjoyed reading this cute cozy mystery, and recipes are included.

Though the book appears to be a part of a series, it is a standalone piece. Each book in the series is written by a different author with the Witches Academy in the backdrop. I've read only this one.
The storyline is engaging, and so is the narration. The characters could have been a little more developed, but at least they weren't cardboard cuttings.
It was a fun and engaging read, and I'd definitely like to read more books with the same lead characters. They have the potential to carry a series on their shoulders.
The book has a few typos. Nothing another round of proofreading won't solve.
Overall, it's a lighthearted paranormal cozy mystery.

Kitchen Magic by Anna Celeste Burke may be book #5 in the Witches Academy series but it stands completely on its own.

Muriel Bright is the latest sweetheart on a food channel but she is as down to earth as any other non-celebrity in Hollywood. Muriel met her best friend, Ophelia, while she was attending the Witches Academy in New Orleans and have been best friends ever since. Muriel and Ophelia are likable and a little quirky which brought humor to some scenes in the book. Detective Harper Maddox seems to be a hottie with a brain that quickly catches onto the fact that there is more to these murders than meets the eye. The plot is well crafted, the murders are disturbing and magic is afoot as Muriel and Harper investigate.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; and I hope Ms. Burke is considering writing more books about Muriel, Ophelia and Harper.

Kitchen Magic earns 5/5 Kitchen Witches...Deliciously Engaging!

It’s MO fun, MO food, MO murder? M-Muriel Bright is at her best showcasing foodie delights for a studio filled with eager fans of her cooking show and bantering with her friend and co-host O-Ophelia Cheval, but a burned tongue, minor electric shock, and an almost Jerry Springer-type confrontation forces her to defuse the situation with a bit of magic and a few Kitchen Witches hidden under chairs. But, then pop...the studio is sent into darkness. Emergency footlights allow the audience to evacuate safely, but Mimi Banks, the show’s stylist, screams and rushes into view. “He’s dead!” Of course, murder is highly unusual, but while Muriel uses her hyper-vigilant talent observing the crime scene, she hears a soft cry, feels a hand touch her face, and sees an eerie shadow disappear through the wall. Oh, this is going to be complicated, and along with concerns her magical talents might be in jeopardy of being revealed publicly, she treads softly.

Anna Celeste Burke is a favorite author penning several series I am always eager to read, so a new series...Magic! Witches! Food! The trifecta of themes! This well-written, steady-paced drama has a realistic magical element that make it perfect for cozy fans who love a cup of hocus-pocus. The victim is not without complexities since several women and some debts define the suspect list, but add the suspicious appearance of a phantom figure and one won’t be able to put it down. Using a traditional cozy formula of which I am a big fan, she has the murder occur early in the drama putting the investigation at the center, character introductions are woven throughout, and suspects and some “paranormal” motives are revealed slowly, deliberately; just when I thought I’d got it...“abracadabra,” something else pops up. A bit of romance is included, and having it with the investigating detective is more than great, it may be a “fateful coincidence.” Burke’s writing style uses my favorite narrative, first-person, allowing me to enjoy the “I” perspective, and she fills the drama with descriptive language and clever banter to illustrate well the various settings, emotions, sensory elements, and character appearance and personalities. I love Muriel! I love Ophelia! I love the twists in Muriel’s family history! I love Kitchen Magic! Second helpings, please!

Big Bonus! Anna Celeste Burke is herself a trained chef sans the diploma from the Witches Academy, so this passion is one from which readers benefit with added easy-to-follow recipes great for any “magical” occasion: Enchanting Appetizers: Panchetta-Wrapped Peaches with Basil and Aged Balsamic, Sandwich Magic: Garlic Aioli BLTs with Fried Green Tomatoes, Bewitching Main Dishes: Hawaiian Ono with Pineapple Coconut Ginger Salsa; and Spellbinding Desserts: Sweet Potato Bebinca.

Disclosure: I received an ARC from the author. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.

Kitchen Magic is an enjoyable paranormal cozy mystery, Muriel and her friend, Ophelia, co-host a cooking show When a murder occurs, Muriel immediately knows there is dark magic behind it. There have been two other murders linked to this one. Along with her personal trainer, Barry, they set out to solve the murders. As the story unfolds, we learn about Muriel's magic abilities as she uses them to unravel all the clues. Detective Harper Maddox is a breath of fresh air. He's intelligent, competent, nerdy, and smitten with Muriel. I truly enjoyed this story and hope there are more stories to come with these delightful characters.

Kitchen Magic by Anna Celeste Burke is the fifth book in the Witches Academy series. Each installment in this eight-book series is penned by a different author and can easily be read as a standalone. The witches featured in these books are all graduates of the Witches Academy of Sorcery in New Orleans. The characters in Ms. Burke’s installment to this series are well developed, and the storyline flows smoothly. There’s never a dull moment in this clean read that’s filled with magic, a touch of romance, and a connection to the past. The reveal came as a surprise.

As a graduate of the Witches Academy of Sorcery, Muriel Bright is very aware of evil forces and the misuse of magic and is tasked with keeping the darkness at bay. When the murder of Josh Curry occurs at the studio where Muriel and Ophelia, her long-time friend and cooking show co-host, work, Muriel realizes that it isn’t an isolated crime and that evil forces are at work. As Muriel uses her magic abilities to unravel the clues, Barry, her personal trainer and self-appointed bodyguard, and Ophelia offer their support. Muriel feeds information to Harper Maddox, one of the detectives assigned to the multiple murders, and his sidekick, Athena. Muriel and Harper share a mutual attraction.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Although this is Book 5 in a series, I had no problem reading this as a stand alone.

Muriel Bright with her friend and co-host, Ophelia have a cooking show when unexpectedly there is a power outage. When a cast member calls out about another team member, announcing that he's dead. He had an electric cable fall on him. When Muriel has one of her visions of a young woman trying to tell her something.

Muriel overhears more unsavory news and reaches out to Lana Dickson, who made friends with the cops since she plays one on a cop show. Hoping to get more inside information, since Muriel's senses are telling her that something is afoot and may have magic involved.

As Muriel continues to look further into the situation, she encounters some terrifying situations of her own. To protect herself, her friends, and the detective working the case; Muriel has to use some magic.

This was a fun read! I liked how they opened up and brought Muriel's trainer on board to help, especially after he witnessed an unsettling event, that had Muriel's two cats lending teeth and claws. There was some surprise about Muriel's background that includes Detective Harper Maddox, and his mother.

Muriel Bright is a witch and an amazing cook as well! Ophelia, Muriels sidekick, has a few witchy tricks up her sleeve as well! And we can't forget her two cats--they are definitely characters! They do a cooking show together and people LOVE it. Of course when the lights go out--then go back on--a stage guy is found electrocuted. He really was not a very nice guy--but really--

Muriel has to use a magic trick to calm everyone down--seems she can stretch time--and managed to calm everyone down by placing dolls under each of their seats in the space of a couple of seconds.

Muriel senses that this isn't just a 'normal' murder or accident. She knows that there are other witches behind it--and they don't really know what they are doing. A weeping woman keeps appearing to her in her dreams and when awake--but is always grabbed back by a hand.

It takes a bit and a lot of twists and turns and also lots of laughter as Muriel and friends track down the perpetrator.

As with all Anna Celeste Burke's novels--there are some delicious recipes at the end!

I received an ARC from the author for my enjoyment and possible review.

"That which is due,” I muttered, quoting the line about Nemesis’s role as the goddess of Divine Retribution. “Things go from bad to worse fast when you take on the role of a would-be goddess."

Muriel Bright, star of a cooking show with her friend Ophelia on the foodie network gets in the middle of a murder that might include her! Battling with dark forces from the far past reminds her that family can be who you choose as well as who you were born to in a convoluted tale of mystery, history and food.

This is the 5th in the series of Witches Academy books, and I loved it. I want to get the others and look forward to reading the future ones. Anna Celeste Burke has found in Muriel a character with paranormal tendencies that everyone will want to sit and have a meal with. I know I do! Highly recommended 5/5

Omg! “Kitchen Magic” by Anna Celeste Burke is a phenomenal PNR, cozy mystery from the ‘Witches Academy’ collection with various other wonderful authors! I was grabbed from the get-go & did not want to stop whenever I had to, tho I pushed through & finished it in record time :) But then it left me wanting more and right now, no waiting ;) lol ... This author knows how to weave a fresh new plot, with twists & turns, relatable characters & clever dialogue that had me turning pages like crazy! I can highly recommend this clean must read to all fans of fiction, including teens & YA, as there are only hints of romance with this cozy mystery! Now I can’t wait for more from this author, plus I will go check out the other books in this collection, too :D

Really enjoyed

This is a new writer for me and I’m glad I tried her. While I have specific favorites in various genres who I refuse to miss and read over and over I like to find new people to add to my library. This is just such a writer
She treats her readers like we are intelligent people and uses full sentences plus doesn’t misuse me/I ….my personal fingernails on a blackboard
To top it all off she gives an interesting storyline with well developed characters plus when giving hints on history you don’t feel like you are being either talked down to or the information is just thrown in to fill up a certain amount of space in the book thus making it boring

Muriel and Ophelia are filming their cooking show when there is a power outage. They later find the body of a murder victim backstage. The police divulge that there have been other similar murders. The ladies start to work in conjunction with the police to solve the murders. Maybe just a bit of witchcraft is involved.

This is the first book that I've read in the series, but not the first by this author. I enjoyed the characters and the story was fun. I think most cozy mystery-type readers would enjoy this book. I look forward to reading other books in the series.

This is the first book I have read in this series but I didn’t have any trouble following. A fascinating read that starts out with a kitchen show and then a little magic. We find out there was a murder - no, make that three murders! A little bit of romance, some twists and turns and a great storyline and you have a fantastic story!
I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however, I voluntarily wrote an honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

Excellent Paranormal Mystery
This is an excellent paranormal mystery. I am not sure that I would call in a cozy in that it gave me nightmares. At any rate, the plot is excellent and keeps the reader riveted. The paranormal part is pretty spooky. This is the first book of the series that I have read and it stood alone quite well. I received this ARC book for free from the author and this is my honest review.

Wow! What a ride. Muriel does what she must to keep the dark forces at bay while trying to solve the murder on set, This was quite different than what Ms. Burke offers but a fun read nonetheless. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of Muriel, Ophelia and Barry along with the detective Harper Maddox. Bring us more Muriel!

This book is about a tv cooking show star and her friends who get involved with a set of murder investigations. This is book 5 in the series but it still worked as a stand alone cozy. Lots of mystery , humor and romance and a bit of magic made this a great read. I absolutely will be going back to catch up on the first 4 books and watching out more to come on this series.

This was funny because the MC was clumsy but she didn’t make a big deal out of it. I liked how everything was laid back. I never read this series before so I am a little shocked that I didn’t notice it I think I will start with number 1 to see what is going on with everything at the academy because there were some parts I was lost in

Kitchen Magic, a TV Show

This is a different story. Muriel and Ophelia are co-stars of a cooking show with the occasional guest. Muriel is a witch, Ophelia is not. As they finished a show and are leaving the studio, Muriel discovers a body and so begins a lot of twists and turns that creates an interesting story.
