Ik vond dit maar een middelmatig boek, erg voorspelbaar wat de relaties betrof ook. Echt zo een eind goed al goed boek, waarin iedere vrijgezel wel een partner vindt.
De rest van het verhaal, de moeilijkheden en de geheimen waarmee men geconfronteerd werd, waren ook niet echt boeiend.
Het gaat voornamelijk over mensen van een productiemaatschappij, die een historische film willen maken, waarvoor ze een huis uitgekozen hebben dat Wooldene Hall heet.
Dit is het eigendom van Henry en Diana, een broer en zus die moeite hebben om de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen en het grote huis niet meer kunnen onderhouden, daarom leven ze in een bungalow op het terrein. Ze hopen dat de verhuur van het huis voor de film wat geld opbrengt, zodat ze toch al een deel van de kosten kunnen betalen.
Dan is er ook nog de tante Lucy van Diana en Henry, die in een bejaardentehuis zit en dementerend is. Lucy blijkt een geheim in haar verleden te hebben, dat Diana wil uitspitten.
Ook de moeilijke tijden die Noord-Ierland gekend heeft, en de oorlog, komen aan bod. De broer(Michael) van Louise, één van de leden van het productieteam, heeft daarvoor in de gevangenis gezeten. Het verleden van Michael zorgt ook voor strubbelingen tussen de hoofdpersonages.
Mijn conclusie: dit boek was wel leesbaar, maar zeker niet van het soort dat ik zou overwegen van de herlezen. Ik denk dat er na een tijdje zelfs weinig zal blijven hangen van het verhaal.

I have really mixed feelings about this one. First of all, she's not "the new Maeve Binchy" - all they have in common is that they're Irish. This was a really light, quite likeable, romantic novel, with a few parallel stories, until the Irish back story kicked in - the IRA brother, the background of the troubles, came as a really discordant surprise. Louise's feelings about Henry, positive and negative, never really rang true for me. And when we got to the story of the stalker... I'd have liked this one much more if she'd kept it simple, I thought the book just tried to do too much. Overall, I was rather disappointed.

Listened on audio which made it much easier to understand as it is told in different voices. Quality romance with an unexpected and shocking inclusion of IRA history to offset any predictability or honey sweetness of the romance.

An enjoyable, easy reading, love story. Louise is an Irish film-maker, attracted to Henry, an ex-solder who served in Ireland. Needless to say there are problems with their relationship but it was a good story that kept me engrossed for a day or two. A book along the lines of a Maeve Binchy.
