Reality Gold by Tiffany Brooks was a bit like taking Survivor and crossing it over with the Goonies. A group of 18-ish teens have signed up to film a reality show on an island where there’s a treasure that folks have searched for years to find.

After Riley Ozaki experiences being shunned by her fellow classmates for a scandal at her school she feels like the only way to erase her internet shame is to show everyone just who she really is by joining a reality TV competition. It doesn’t hurt that the show is being filmed on the very same deserted Black Rock island off the coast of Brazil that hides a stolen treasure of Inca gold.

As the teens are being dropped on the island they are told that not only will they be competing in challenges for the show’s prize of a million dollars they will also be able to search for the treasure for an additional cash prize if found. After being dropped off they are split into two groups and begin their challenges of surviving the island.

Reality Gold was a fast paced, action packed adventure from start to finish. You have the Survivor-ish reality side of competing teams and being voted off the island mixed with the One Eyed Willie’s treasure to find reading maps, finding clues and facing danger. There’s plenty of drama, danger and exciting adventure in the book to captivate while reading this one. It’s also very well done with bringing in today’s teen social media obsession and today’s technology to infuse those into the story. A fun read that I’d recommend checking out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

the concept of this book is super fun. we are following a reality show where 20 teens are dropped on an island and compete for a million dollars -- think shows like survivor or the challenge -- plus there is a buried treasure somewhere on the island that some of the players are trying to find.

The tag line for this book is "Survivor meets Lord of the Flies" but I think it should be "Survivor meets Tomb Raider".

I switched between reading the ebook and listening to the audiobook and both formats were enjoyable. This book started out really strong and started to lose me towards the very end. But due to spoilers I won't say what bugged me. Luckily I did stick with it and I'm glad I did because that bugging feeling didn't last long! I enjoyed the reality tv aspect with the twist of treasure hunting. This idea felt fresh and definitely made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen.

Riley was such a great main character. She was an outcast that is full of flaws/personality. I can definitely see a lot of readers being able to connect and relate to her. There were a lot of side characters and the author did a great job of giving them their own backstory and characteristics. I didn't care for all of them but instead had my favorites that I was rooting. This always happens when it comes to reality tv!

One thing I could have done without was the light romance in the story. Personally, I didn't see the need for Riley to have a love interest. I would have much preferred if she focused more on herself and trying to mature rather than have a insta love/obsession with a certain character.

Overall, this was a great YA thriller. It will keep your interest throughout and will make you guess what's truly going on. I recommend reading this book over a few days rather than in one sitting so it's like you're reading episodes of a show!

Received a copy of this book on #Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much @sourcebooksfire , @dreamscape_media for providing me with a copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

After a prank went wrong at her High school, Riley and her best friend Ivy were expelled. Worst off Riley became a laughing stock and internet memes were posted about her and her friendship with Ivy faded. Now after finishing her homeschool year, she is ready to get back out into the world and show people who she really is. This opportunity arises in a reality Tv show called Reality Gold set on Black Rock Island. The TV show is a teen version of Survivor. The other thing is that this show has a twist as the island is famous for being rumored to have buried treasure on it. The treasure has never been found and is supposedly cursed. Riley knows this information firsthand as her godfather Miles was obsessed with finding the treasure and eventually wound up murdered on the island. As the reality TV show continues, we read as strange things start occurring on the island - is the island really cursed or does somebody really not want the treasure to be found by these meddling kids? As the numbers start to dwindle for the remaining contestants, it will soon become a game of true survival as they encounter murderous treasure hunters and pirates. Who will survive Reality Gold? Find out on the next episode of Tiffany Brook's book "Reality Gold". A fun YA look into the world of treasure hunting and what goes on behind the scenes of reality TV and the castings.

3.5 out of 5 stars!

I was on the promotional tour for this book!

I really liked the concept behind the reality show on a desert island. It reminded me a lot of some shows I used to see as a kid, including Escape from Scorpion Island which was one of my personal favourites. In this novel, the main character Riley was basically made a fool of online, due to an incident involving her writing for her high school paper. To do something active before her return to the classroom, she signs up for Reality Gold, a show where twenty teens battle against each other for the chance to win a million dollars. However, there are rumours of buried treasure somewhere on the island. If found, the successful person to find them could win 250,000 dollars. But on an island full of secrets and twists, no-one wants to be friendly. They all want to win, everything is on the line.
The last few chapters of Reality Gold were thrilling, the twists and turns I found unexpected but really added to the atmosphere. The novel definitely captured the drama of a reality show well, the mystery behind the buried treasure kept me interested in reading on. This standalone was a really good read, which helped me out of a reading slump!

I did find this book to be “survivor meets lord of the flies” which was disappointing. I will say that the narrator did a great job of telling the story and giving some life to the characters - which they needed because character development was lacking. The main narrator Riley had a good backstory and should have been likable but while she was smart she made all of the stupidest decisions when it came to reading other people. And I especially hated her “love interest” story line because anytime a girl spends half her time talking about what a jerk a guy is he’s no longer attractive period. I felt like clues were dropped heavily several times and the narrator just ignored them.

Riley got into some trouble at school which through a series of missteps led to her getting some internet fame in a super negative way. Isolated from all of her friends and doing school online she decides the solution is to do a reality tv show - survivor with teens on a small island off Brazil (I know, I know this was the first super dumb and lack of insightful idea she had. Had she never watched a reality tv show?). Hidden on that island is a treasure that Riley is familiar with since her father funds treasure hunts and even brought her to that island a couple of years prior. Riley decides to hunt the treasure but both the show and the treasure hunt are more full of dangers than she guessed. I gave it a 2.5 rounded down for star rating.

Honestly? Underwhelming... which is very unfortunate as the premise seemed like it would be very interesting. The synopsis and cover seem to promise a darker, grittier YA mystery/thriller but it just wasn't that. It felt like there weren't really any real risks for any of the characters, much less our main character Riley, for there to be any tension you would expect when reading something marketed as a cross between Survivor and Lord of the Flies.

THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND THE PUBLISHER FOR THIS REVIEW COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.

Riley is a new face of memes and a target of online bullying. She wants to change her public opinion and for this purpose, she has to go in public. What's the better option than participating in a reality show where she'll be able to change her image. So, she decided to be part of a reality show where twenty-teens are going to spend a few weeks on a remote island and finding treasure is also an option.
*I only read 100 pages then jumped to the last chapter so I am going to talk only about that*
The sound of Riley's character was so annoying and unreasonable, it was so hard to relate to her actions. I know the story gave her backstory still I just couldn't relate to her. There were more than 20+ characters and the story kept jumping from one to the other which made it so happy to remember each of them. I read around 100 pages still couldn't remember all of them. The pace was so slow for my taste and the writing style was not my type. After trying a lot, I decided to jump on the last chapter and was glad to make that decision.

It was my mistake to choose this book. Totally not my type.

This tension-filled story brought back memories of the first season of the Survivor Series, which I believe is still ongoing or at least in syndication? I am not a huge fan of series so I have not kept up with the original Survivor Series. It was interesting to go behind the scenes and see how this type of show is "engineered." Did I honestly ever believe that the entire show wasn't rigged for maximum audience appeal? Hardly!

Riley wants to escape - social media has made her life a misery because of a school prank, so at first I found it hard to understand why Riley would subject herself to even more exposure by insisting on joining a televised "Survivor" type TV show. The Island on which the show will be filmed is also the location where her late godfather, Miles, lost his life while he was searching for buried treasure. The island has a tragic history: six people, including her late godfather, have died during their failed attempts to find the trove of buried treasure that is rumoured to be hidden somewhere in a secret subterranean cave. There are also rumours that the island and the treasure are cursed and legend has it that seven searchers must die before the location of the treasure will be revealed.

This young adult thriller has all the elements to hold your attention: plenty of personal and team challenges, tons of maps and clues to decipher, and some menacing outside forces to keep everyone on their toes after dark!

I enjoyed this story but found the ending left us with a major loose end - no spoilers here - which made me suspect that this might become a series? At any rate, this was a very enjoyable YA novel that will satisfy on all levels. I'm rating this a 3.8 out of 5 stars, rounded up to a 4.

I received an E-Book as well as an Audiobook ARC of The Girl Who Knew Too Much in exchange for an honest review. Having the the very well narrated E-book for those times when I preferred to sit and simultaneously listen and read along to the audiobook was a huge bonus because - with all the young contestants and crew members in this story - it made it much easier to keep track of who was who at any given time in the narrative. I highly recommend this YA Thriller.

My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel, as well as the audiobook.

Thank you so Sourcebooks Fire and Tiffany Brooks for this book that comes out January 4. You think it's a game. Think again. Survivor meets Lord of the Flies in this fast-paced adventure with fascinating characters and pulse-pounding tension. Twenty teens are dropped off on a deserted island to compete for a cash prize. But Riley is looking for a vast treasure rumored to be hidden on the island. Only it turns out others also want the cache of riches and will stop at nothing to find it.

Thoughts: This book is a mix of fun challenges with the background of creeping darkness. I am OBSESSED with Survivor, as some of you may know, so I loved this premise. This book was just as dramatic and entertaining as reality TV would be. I loved the amazing setting and the ominous background story as well. I enjoyed the treasure hunting aspect but would have loved more info on the challenges too.

This was a fun YA thriller if you leave it at that. The reality show theme made it fun because you didn’t know what was being manipulated for the show. I actually wish there were more thrilling and scary aspects, though the idea of the island being cursed was fun. I could actually see this being a teen movie or episode of Scooby-Doo. It was very entertaining and I gave it 4-stars.

I think I went into this with the wrong expectations. I saw the "Survivor meets Lord of the Flies" description and was ready for a dark, deadly YA thriller. This is much more of an adventure story with a mystery/thriller element. It also starts off with the main character essentially being ~cancelled by a woke mob~. She gradually realizes that other people have had it worse and that she could have handled it better, but she still is angry that people didn't take her intent into account.

Maybe if I had gone into this expecting an adventure, with the possibly cursed treasure hunt and a drama-filled teen reality show, I would have enjoyed it more, but I spent the whole book waiting for it to turn a corner and get dark, which doesn't really happen.

Oh! And I was so confused by the romance. I don't understand why she's interested in this guy, I don't see the chemistry, and they interact very little for how much she agonizes over him.

Let me start out by saying, I want 375 pages of my life back. Whoever wrote the back cover is a liar.
I was so bored that picking up my book felt like a punishment. Obviously, the author had tons of book ideas and decided to mix all together and see what happened. I'll save you the pain of reading it and tell you... a disjointed storyline that got worse and worse until it finally ended.
Readers, don't do this to yourselves. I wouldn't have finished it if I didn't have a reading goal set.

Naw. Why did this book take so long to get exciting?? The back of the book made it sound so suspenseful and exciting and it didn’t really get to that point till I had about 80 pages left :/ I wouldn’t say the excitement that was there was even worth it either. The characters were interesting, and the little bit of romance there way cute, but it was hardly there. This book had so much potential 😩😩

The synopsis described this book as "Survivor meets Lord of the Flies" and I was immediately sold. I would say this book definitely feels like an amalgamation of the two, as fun challenges get overshadowed by an encroaching darkness whilst twenty teens are isolated on a tropical island together.

The book is told from the perspective of teenage Riley. She, along with the other nineteen contestants, are all vying for a cut of one-million dollars on a new reality TV show. A twist occurs during their first day together when they are told about the existence of buried treasure on their new island home. If they uncover this treasure they will also be able to receive even more money during the final but the production company will keep hold of whatever the treasure actually consists of. Riley already knew about the treasure and, she soon realises, so does one other contestant. Whether she will strike out alone and gain it for herself or learn to trust the others and share this experience (and the money!) remains to be seen.

I am trash for reality TV, with Survivor and The Challenge forming my favourite two. I was eager to see a fictional take on this world and I was not disappointed. This proved just as fun, entertaining, and drama-filled as any successful reality show and I felt it emulated the vibes correctly, whilst also containing something mysterious and thrilling too.

I would have wished for a few more challenges to appear, and for more of a deeper understanding of the other contestants, but the focus switched quickly to the treasure hunts and the eeriness occurring on the island and off camera. I did not mind this new focus as I found it to be just as entertaining and I was eager to puzzle out exactly what was occurring, along with the characters.

Riley was both a strong but initially distant main character. I enjoyed witnessing her break down these barriers and expose her truth to the other contestants and to the reader. I bonded with her as the story continued and was satisfied with the conclusion she was involved in.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author,Tiffany Brooks, and the publisher, Sourcebooks Fire, for this opportunity.

This review was originally posted on The Moonlight Library

I received this book for free from Dunemere Books in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

In Reality Gold, Riley Ozaki's grand plan to shift negative social media publicity off her and change Google's first result on her from 'spoiled rich girl' revolves around taking part in a reality TV show competition similar to Survivor with 19 other teenagers, but she's secretly there to look for ancient buried treasure.

One of the problems when trying to review a book that you think is technically flawless is that it's so much easier to write about what you didn't like than what you did.

I think Reality Gold was, for me, technically flawless.

A strong, capable yet vulnerable (not in a wimpy way, what I mean is that she had an exploitable weakness, she's not a Mary Sue) female lead, interesting and mostly well-developed co-stars, a solid plot, with intrigue, mystery, and sabotage, a great setting, a smatter of romance that doesn't turn into half of the plot… just generally a really well-written book.

I enjoyed Riley's very typical teenage girl attitude to the boy she immediately takes a shine to, trying to talk herself out of fancying him, actively deciding to go with her allies to protect them rather than chase after him. Her attitude to the girls was really good too, I liked her moments with unpredictable Maren and the sweet moments with Willa, showing desperately lonely Riley that she could make friends after her scandal. Riley was smart, capable, prepared, insightful, and honest. She's not quick to trust any of the other competitors, even though she has to work with them. She's not and ideal version of some kick-ass character, though, she does have issues with her confidence. She prefers to stay on the sidelines and observe people, and that made her interesting and showed how clever she was.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: insta-love is not being able to identify the object of one's attention. Insta-love is not the first inklings of interest, or maybe the first smatterings of a crush, the desire t spend more time with someone. Insta-love is the over the top declaration that after two days one can't live without the other. I can safely say that yes, although friendship-starved Riley does develop a love interest, it's in no way insta-love, and she is very much aware of her own stupid feelings, and even chooses the welfare of others over building her social currency to impress the boy she fancies.

I really love behind-the-scenes documentaries of films and my favourite TV shows, so I enjoyed this look at what it took to produce this first-time treasure-hunter themed reality TV show contest. There was a lot of drama on set, and sometimes it seemed like the challenges were almost forgotten about in the excitement of treasure hunting and trying to keep secrets from the producers. I used to watch reality shows, but I stopped because of the extend of manipulating by the show's producers, and this is demonstrated really well in Reality Gold where the kids are instructed to fake their enthusiasm and the host has to do multiple takes to get something right.

I liked how almost every kid in the cast of 20 contestants had their own background and reason for coming on the show. Sure, some of them are voted off early and we don't get to know them, but it's pretty easy to guess from the opening couple of chapters who will stay behind the longest.

One thing I was slightly disappointed about

I think if you've enjoyed watching trashy reality TV contests and like reading YA novels, you'll probably enjoy this one, as I did.

Trigger warnings: violence, serious physical injury, mentions of drug use, adult/minor relationship, death of a loved one (in the past), vomit

3.5 stars.

I loved the premise of this - a Survivor style game on an island off the coast of Brazil with a group of teenagers and also there's a mysterious lost treasure on the island that the protagonist desperately wants to find - but unfortunately the execution was...a little odd.

The Survivor style side of things was...not what I thought it would be. Yes, there were challenges and people got voted out. But for the most part, the kids were left to roam around the entire island at will, often without a camera crew because "oh look, we have fancy phone/tablet things for you and you can just film each other!" And, like, I understand that the plot requires them to be left on their own, but there were other ways to do it, you know?

Add in too many characters (we start with 20 teenagers, plus the crew), a bunch of implied clues that just...literally went nowhere (), and a completely unnecessary romance between one of the contestants and the mid-30s host and this just ultimately wasn't really for me.

Especially when the ending turned out to be rushed as hell. Sigh.

All of that being said, it was definitely fast paced and full of action, and I liked the main character as a protagonist. So there's that.

This book was pretty good, overall I really enjoyed it. It was like reading a reality tv show instead of watching it. 20 teens are dropped off on a deserted island to compete against one another for a cash prize. They would have the opportunity to use it for whatever they needed to and a lot of them were looking for funding for their college.
However, our main character has her own motives to come to this project and it's not just to compete with the people on the island to be the last one standing. Riley wants to continue along with the work of her godfather Miles who died on this island looking for the treasure. Riley wants to find that treasure, along with proving herself to all the people in the world that she is not what she thinks that people think of her.
At first, it seems like everything is going well, and then stuff starts to turn in different directions when stuff starts turning up missing or broken then they go through a bout of food poisoning.
Overall the book was a good way to pass the afternoon, I liked the storyline and some of the characters. However, I wish that there were more challenges for the tv show. If you like the show survivor or reality tv then this is a great book to check out! The ending was kind of expected but I really enjoyed it!
I received the audiobook from Dreamscape Media to review and the audiobook was amazing! The narrator was easily understood along she fit the part. Thank you Netgalley & Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to listen and review this one!

Full Review on The Candid Cover

The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Tiffany Brooks is a treasure hunt with a twist. Depicting a reality show set on a deserted island that is rumoured to hold buried treasure, this one contains drama and a main character who is determined to reinvent herself. I especially enjoyed reading about the show’s entertaining challenges and the mysterious treasure markers. This is a unique contemporary that is perfect for those who enjoy a bit of adventure.

On a deserted island, twenty contestants compete on a reality TV show for the chance to win a million dollars. However, on their first day, they learn that there is treasure rumoured to be buried somewhere on the island, and if one or more of the contestants find it, they will be rewarded with an even greater cash prize. Riley, the main character, is already familiar with this mysterious buried treasure thanks to her godfather’s involvement with treasure hunts, but in her search, she comes to find that treasure hunting is more dangerous than she thought, and that she is not the only one on the hunt.

❀ FLAWED MAIN CHARACTER

Riley is a flawed main character, and she transforms throughout the book. She joins the reality show in order to fix her image, as she gained negative attention on social media, and she is desperate to get others to see her true self. On the island, no one knows about Riley’s past, which creates the perfect opportunity for a new beginning. I especially enjoyed reading about Riley’s resourceful tactics in hunting for the treasure and her motivation for finding it–to honour her godfather’s legacy.

❀ COMPETITIONS ADD SUSPENSE

There are two competitions in this book–the main reality show and the treasure hunt–and I enjoyed both of these aspects. The challenges on the show are entertaining, and the descriptions of the production process create drama. Throughout the book, there are also many descriptions of the treasure hunting process as characters decipher treasure markers in an attempt to figure out if the buried treasure is real or only a legend. I have never read anything like this before, and the dangers of searching for treasure build suspense, especially with the backdrop of a deserted island.

❀ UNIQUE STORY

The Girl Who Knew Too Much by Tiffany Brooks is a unique story of self-discovery with a touch of thrill. I enjoyed the two different competitions that the book depicts as well as the main character’s determination to share her true self with the world. The treasure hunting scenes are particularly strong, making this a great read for those looking for a more suspenseful contemporary.

A stupid mistake, less than a year go, leads Riley Ozaki to be ostracized from her friends and her parents to be disappointed in her. To top it all off, social media has caused quite the stir in her little world, further alienating her from her friends and family. Instead of Murphy’s law, she nicknamed it Riley’s Law. Whatever could go wrong does go wrong. Therefore, she signs herself up for a reality show with 19 other teens, hoping to get her life back on track and out of the public eye. She wants to be seen as a good person and to start her life over again in a new school without the biggest mistake of her life following her around like a dark cloud. This is not the only reason Riley is going, though. She is in search of a treasure that can only be found on Black Rock Island.

The reality show is being hosted on Black Rock Island, which also is home to an Inca treasure that claimed the life of Riley’s Godfather. Many treasure hunters have come and gone and some have even died in search of this treasure. A local curse says that seven people need to die before the treasure can be found. Six hunters have already died while looking for the treasure, will someone from this group of teens and film crew be the seventh victim before the treasure can be found?

Reality Gold is filled with people hiding secrets, lots of intrigue and even some danger. I really loved the mystery of it all and wondered if there really was any treasure or if it was all just a legend. What first pulled me into this story was the reality show aspect. I am a huge fan of reality TV, including treasure hunting shows. Also, I am a huge fan of the Indiana Jones movies. Put them both together and I was practically salivating to read this story. I am happy to say, that it did not disappoint!

There are quite a few characters introduced in this story, but do not fret, most are background characters with a few central based main characters that take up much of this story. We learn their backgrounds and what prompted them to join the reality show in the first place. It was interesting to see and learn why they wanted to be a part of a TV show and what they could gain from being on TV. I felt that each character was well written and I found myself routing for them and hoping they could find the treasure.

The plot was well written, although the beginning did start off a little slow for me. It did pick up once the action started happening on the island and I found myself engrossed in the storyline and the teens. Reality Gold has a lot of aspects that I enjoy in a story. There is mystery, betrayals, backstabbing, alliances formed, and a sprinkle of romance thrown in.

All in all, Reality Gold is a pretty solid light read. Perfect if you are looking for an easy story that you can finish all in one day.

What happens when you gain a bad reputation in an upper class California school? You pull a stunt and hope it's big enough to cover your past. Humiliated by a rich girl meme and expelled from school for baking a batch of weed brownies, Riley Ozaki decides that in order to convince the world that she is not who she seems, she needs to join a game show: Reality Gold. It consists of 20 high schoolers, a treasure hunt, and a wild ride of gold fever and TV drama manipulation.

Opinion:
Reality Gold is a roller coaster ride, though maybe with too many turns. I enjoyed the idea of the story: putting a real treasure as the prize of a game show, but there was a lot going on. The 20 plus general characters was a lot to take in, but Ms. Brooks did a good job giving each one a set personality/role without describing them too much and having them rival Riley as the main character. The separate teens each seemed to represent a cliche kind of character, but that helped to show there is a way for so many different kinds of people to come together and push toward a goal.

The underlying subterfuge was a nice touch, accented by the idea that all the contestants were there for different reasons and had different ideas of how they would use the prize money/treasure. The sterotyped personalities played nicely into this to help emphasize the different motivations.

I thought that Riley was a good main character who dealt with some good conflicts with herself and the people around her, but there were things about her past and family life that were left hanging. I found it frustrating when they kept cropping up in helping/hindering her participation in the game show and I didn't fully have the background. However, a lot was tied up in the end. The ending not as climatic as I would've liked, especially given the dreaded "curse of the island."

In general, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a simple book to enjoy or who enjoys treasure hunts and teen relationships.

A big thank you to Dunemere Books and to Edelweiss for a digital ARC of this new YA release.

Having watched many an episode of Survivor, I was intrigued by the plot of this book. After watching various reality shows, you speculate on what goes on behind the scenes and how the finished product comes to us. This book peels back that curtain and we get to watch the show from the time the contestants are on the helicopter approaching the island. Riley is our eyes and ears and she has a two-pronged agenda: redeem her good name from the media shaming she has endured recently and find the treasure her godfather was killed for. The fact that she was chosen for the show tells us much about the "reality" of reality television and as we follow the show you see the manipulations and machinations of the cast and crew multiply. The treasure hunt adds an additional layer of mystery and some thriller moments to the story. Will make an entertaining summer read for teens and fans of Survivor.

Sorry, more like 2.5 stars.
First off i want to thank Netgalley for the opportunity to honestly review the audiobook.
I had a hard time finding the characters believable. I understand people can be smart, without having much common sense, but this story took the light bulb above the head and dumb decisions to a new level.

Survivor meets Oak Island...treasure, curses, with immunity idols and vote outs...still the characters had no depth and the main one was too worried about her image!

Oak Island meets Survivor.

“They’d have to paddle pretty hard to catch anyone. Hey, wait up. We’re coming to rob you,” (131). A quote talking about pirates who only have a canoe. Hilarious.

Riley has just switched schools. She was expelled for something her and another student had done. All her friends have ditched her and her father has been more distant than ever. Nothing is going right or good in her life. But before she starts at her new school an opportunity falls into her lap.

When Reality Gold, a TV reality show, presents itself Riley signs up for it. She has a plan: to change the public’s opinion about her. She also is determined to find the hidden treasure, but that won’t be easy considering the curse. The island needs seven deaths before it will reveal the treasure.

I love any suspense reality TV plot and this book did not disappoint. The characters are all different and come from different backgrounds. Watching how they interact with each other was fun. Who can they really trust?

I can relate to Riley in that she’s always in her head trying to figure things out. I love the game she plays with herself also. Reflective thinking or revenge plotting?

I loved all of Maren’s shirt sayings. Totally my vibe! She is probably my favorite character. With some laugh out loud moments and insightful thoughts this is more than just a popcorn thriller but it can also still be read as one.

I loved the list of characters and the map in the start of the book. It makes for a great reference point. I also enjoyed the challenge the competitors had to do.

There may be something more than just a silly curse that they should be worried about on this island…

Black Rock Island, 26 days with 20 teenagers; a reality-TV challenge is up for a million dollar prize + an extra hundred thousand dollars if any player could find the legendary treasure, stolen and hidden by a Spanish explorer in 1600s.

A high school senior, Riley is desperate to change her reality after making a fool of herself on social media. She suffered a social trauma and anxiety but decided to take up the challenge with 19 others, to survive on the remote island that was said to be cursed; 7 must die before the treasure can be found.

A fast-paced narrative set in Survivor/Hunger Games vs Lord of the Flies (not that hauntingly disturbing like the book) backdrop. Intriguing and suspenseful, love all the teenage drama (expect a dash of romance-love triangle stuff here) and few great scenes of Riley and AJ on their eagerness of finding the treasure. The action part was fairly compelling, also to see how Riley coping with her anxiety of making friends and trusting people somehow too relatable and kind of depressing :'/

I like that each having their own motives (even Riley having another thrilling reason to untangle the death mystery of her treasure hunter godfather) but then became attached after finding out that they were actually a 'victim'. The friendship part was superb (also that socmed consequences and views from both Riley and Willa's state) despite all the tragedies, betrayal and lies, and those manipulative TV team creating extra juice for the show.

As it was told in Riley's POV, her stories were my fav the most, and I fancy the way it was written that not a bit I think it was boring or too draggy. Having a love-hate with few characters attitude (Willa, Porter and Maren esp) but as I am a teenager myself before so I digress :p

An expected ending (not really a 26 days, apparently) despite I think the few last chapters been too compact and in hurry, but I do love the 1 year later chapter at the end. 3.8 stars for this debut!

Thank you Times Reads for sending me the ARC in return of my honest review!

NetGalley ARC.

From the cover and the title, I was not expecting teen Survivor with a buried treasure twist! So then I was expecting a lot. A rollicking good time. Annnd what I got was a bit of a mess. The writing was not great. The reasons for Riley to have been infamous was dumb. The treasure...Miles...I didn't buy it. Some of the time I felt like I was thrown into the second book of a series. I don't know, it just didn't work for me. And the ending was so abrupt. This is no Lord of the Flies comparison.

This was such an intriguing premise to me as I’m a huge reality tv fan, with Survivor being one of my favourites!

Drop 20 teens on island and make them compete for a million dollars? What could possibly go wrong! Oh yeah, the islands cursed too 😉

This was a fun and thrilling YA book that I found to be very atmospheric and I really enjoyed the lord of the flies vibe as well! I’d love to see it adapted and think the show within a show aspect is always entertaining!

3.5 rounded to 4 for goodreads

the ending was getting interesting but then it flopped and all the characters reminded me of someone i didn’t like. I was so excited it was like total drama island when they jumped out of a plane in the first chapter but then it just became treasure hunting 🙄 #boring, nothing like the blurb, do NOT read
