The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book is a never-before compiled compendium of lists, facts, anecdotes, trivia, commentary, and much, much more, about the most successful franchise in movie history. Filled with minutiae culled from the far-reaches of the planet, The Ultimate James Bond Fan Book is your one-stop shop for all things Bond, including a detailed, encyclopedic listing of every Bond movie ever made, replete with the actors, the guns, the gadgets, the girls, the cars, and everything in-between. A must for even the casual Bond fan.
this was very well written by Ms. Lipp. Unfortunately, some of her personal opinions appear in the reviews, which i dont agree with some, but nevertheless, she did a great job researching how the films were made, etc. The book has a chronological list of the Bond films up to Pierce Brosnan's last film as James Bond. Sorry Daniel Craig fans, sniff sniff, including me. :( This book was written before Casino Royale was released. Each film has a list of the main cast, plus there are extras like best and worst Bond films, Bond girls, etc. This is probably a must read for any Bond fans out there.
Actual rating would be 3.5 stars. Solid book from a factual standpoint, but Lipp and I are almost exact opposites in many of our opinions of the Bond series, which made this a bit of a frustrating read for me. No, this isn't her fault, but it does color my experience reading the book. My favorite Bond film has been ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE ever since the 1980s, and that opinion has only strengthened over time; Lipp pretty much hates it. One of her favorite is THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, a movie that bores me each time I watch it. (If not for the ski jump off the cliff, would anybody remember that movie's precredit sequence? If Agent Amasova is so cool, basically being the Soviet equal to Bond, why does she just end up being another damsel tied to a chair in the end?)
It's a good book with a TON of good factual information and lots of great starting points for Bond geeky discussion, but the differences of opinion made it a frustrating read for me. (FOR YOUR EYES ONLY is overrated? Really?!)
NOTE: I read an updated edition that includes material up to and including SPECTRE.
Read the first edition of this back in 2006 so four more movies were added (this was in the run-up to No Time To Die) plus new updated material. This is definitely the most thorough Bond book ever, I dare say dense. The only thing I can doc Lipp for are some opinions I frankly find fucking insane. I admire the hot takes but it did hold this back one star. Still, a must for hardcore fans if no one else. I don’t know how old Lipp is but I fear she may not be around to update the new edition.
This is packed with Bond trivia, true! And it's perfect for die-hard fans who don't much care for Daniel Craig, as this takes us through 2002. An update, perhaps?
