When nineteen-year-old runaway Verity Darkwood, flat broke and devastated by guilt, takes refuge in a bar to escape the unwanted attention of a stranger, she doesn't expect to meet Gareth Winter, let alone become business partners with him. They discover that they each possess the ability to interact with the world "beyond the veil" and, with the help of Horace Greeley III, editor of the fantastical online journal The Echo, Verity and Gareth spend the next two years on the road, helping the earthbound spirits who haunt their clients to cross over, or exorcising the demons that plague them. But when they stumble upon a series of unsolved child abductions spanning decades which are eerily similar to the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Verity's younger sister, they embark on a pursuit that will take them across Canada in their quest to find The Seventh Devil, the dangerous and mysterious figure who may be behind it all.
I wasn't too impressed with the way this book started. It reminded me of Ghostbusters without the humour; however, as I got into it, I found it very exciting and a good thriller of sorts. The author fleshes would her characters gradually so as to avoid long descriptive passages.
Initially it seemed like a series of isolated incidents, but as the book progressed, one main antagonist stood out and defeating it made for a good climax.
If you happen to be a writer, and in particular, if you write horror or fantasy stories I particularly recommend this book. Occasionally the author sent me to a dictionary and sometimes to Wikipedia. She seems to have done quite a bit of research in some of the less familiar mythologies and come up with a fine set of critters which might be of use in your own work.
Although this book is probably classed within the 'horror' genre, it's not scary. It's mostly an adventure with ghosts and demons. Whatever the genre it was enjoyable and well worth reading.
I don’t usually read ghost stories but I’m sure glad I did The Seventh Devil. It’s a ghost story. It’s a chase. It’s a mystery. The main characters, Verity and Gareth, have an interesting work relationship in their most unusual occupation. All in all it’s a fast paced, engrossing story which I thoroughly enjoyed.
