Rate this book

The 36 Secret Strategies of the Martial Arts is a collection of ancient Chinese maxims that encapsulate some of the Far East's most cunning tactics for battle and deception. Each of these strategies represents a distilled nugget of Chinese wisdom. In the early 1980s, Hiroshi Moriya, an acknowledged authority on Chinese culture and philosophy, published a book in Japanese in which he analyzed and explained these strategies; and then used examples from ancient and recent history to further elucidate their meaning. Now, renowned translator William Scott Wilson makes The 36 Strategies accessible to today's reader with his new English translation of both the Chinese maxim itself and Moriya's interpretive work.

While these strategies offer a window on the past, they are even more valuable to the modern reader for providing insights into contemporary China. And, like The Book of Five Rings, this volume offers the businessman, the diplomat, the politician, the military strategist, the sports competitor keys to understanding, interpreting and countering the actions of even the most fierce opponent.

Great book. I have read it twice!

Chinese are known for their wise tactics when it comes to war tactics and strategies.

This book mimic most of the 36 arts of the Chinese army that led either to victory or to survive with minimal losses, depending on battle flow. And even some of those arts could defeat the enemy without the need for a military instead, plans lead to the enemy to self-destruction.

Many successful businessmen and politicians use some of these strategies in their career.
I really recommend you all to read this book more than once! cause the first time it will feel like you are reading a historical events and won't be able to relate to your life.

This book can work as a guide for everyone to follow and apply in your life.

When I read the book title " the Chinese guide for success in war, work and life " I thought it represents methods and examples of the strategies that the Chinese did in war and how to apply it in nowadays life. It is a very impressive and informative book but I'de like it more if the author could write some practical examples, in education, social life, business and economic. There was a few of those but very little.

Very enjoyable book which states an idea, followed by the different Chinese Dynasties that demonstrated that idea as well as modern WW1 and WW2 situations, which the readers can easily relate if the old Chinese stories are difficult to understand at times

This book is one of those rare gems to read that, once you've read it, you will feel like you really understand situations better. The tactics the author talks about, all phrased in simple strategy style, explain all the social and psychological dynamics that go on between individuals and groups (i.e., governments, armies, etc.).

The style of each strategy starts with the title of the tactic, a brief explanation with three historical examples of how it was used. The author pulls many examples from Asian history, including these two books, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Art of War. Military strategy has applications in all points of life, not just war, and that was all the goal of what the author intended. He wanted to explain how to use this in one's personal life, and it does it in a way that is not convoluted with text but simple examples to follow and understand.

Here are a few of the titles in the book that represent different strategies.
- Conceal a Sword behind a Smile
- Beat the Grass, Surprise the Snake
- Be Heard in the East, Attack from the West
- Bar the Door, Grab the Thief

Each one covers a wider strategy that serves a different purpose but not all military strategy is about winning, it is also about understanding your enemy better and keeping your army safe and happy. The length of each tactic is about 5 pages at most but to fully integrate it into your life takes a lot longer. I would read one strategy a week and then practice it throughout the week to start making it a subconscious habit. It takes some getting used to it but the rewards are great in the end.

If you enjoy military strategy books, want to understand group mentality better, or just make sure that people are not taking advantage of you then this is a good book to start with. You will learn a lot about Asian history and famous military wars fought long ago.

Well, just my 2 cents ...

I love the wisdom of the ancient Chinese, and this is great reading. Each of these 3000 year old strategies contain nuggets of wisdom which are very relevant to life today. The Chinese see the world as a battlefield and consider the greatest victory to be winning without fighting. Children in China are taught these strategies from a young age - not necessarily so they will use them on others, but to avoid being taken advantage of.

Gives but a small taste of the varying strategies of ancient China...I'd suggest reading the real deals, this book is merely an appetizer. If you want the main course I'd suggest Art of War, Wiles of War and I Ching.

Another repackaging of Eastern philosophy for business students and penny stock traders. Good information that should be taught in general education.
