Scratch Sullivan just wanted to survive the apocalypse in peace... But when the undead bring their war right to his doorstep, it's time to ranger up and rain hell down on his enemies!
Incursion: Vampire ApocalypseTHEM Post-Apocalyptic Series Book Two It's been eight years since the bombs fell and the dead rose, and the world has become a very dangerous place. But unlike most folks, former Army Ranger Scratch Sullivan is getting by just fine.
Sure, it's hell on earth, but Scratch seems to fit in. He makes his living by hunting the dead, vampires and zombies alike, with the odd revenant thrown in for good measure.
It's not a bad life, for a battle-hardened spec ops soldier. And to this point, he's been content with how things turned out.
But now some vamp says the undead are about to attack the safe zone settlements Scratch protects. Maybe it's a load of bull, maybe not. But it's been too damned quiet, and Scratch's intuition tells him it's time to check things out for himself.
So, he's headed into the badlands where no one's safe, to see if that vamp was blowing smoke, or if a war is coming.
And if it's war they want, it's war they'll have. Because after eight long years of rebuilding what was lost, Scratch'll be damned if he lets them take back what humankind reclaimed
M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.
As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.
Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.
It's a good thing I read this novella first, because the subsequent books turned out to be another herd of zombies all together. Incursion: Zombie Apocalypse is a tight, solidly written little novella about a man suffering PTSD after multiple Afghanistan tours when he is forced to confront the end of the world. Everything is set up beautifully for his survival, but it's the psychiatric aspects that were the most interesting, beginning with his attempt to do CPR throwing him into a panic attack.
I thought Massey hit the right notes for motivation without beating the reader over the head. The writing was solid for me, with only a very rare misplaced phrase or--helpmeplease--smirk.
I would have enthusiastically read much more in this version of the post-apoc world. Unfortunately, it turned into something else entirely in the next book, Incursion: Vampire Apocalypse. This one is serious; that one is solid camp. I'd say read this and consider it a one-off. One of the better traditional zombie survival books out there.
"So what’s worse than nuclear annihilation? Pandemic disease? Widespread famine? Something no one ever expected: nightmares, come to life."
Three and a half stars. This takes place a few years after the first book. Aidan Sullivan has made a life for himself hunting the undead. This book was better than the first, action packed and I can’t help liking Scratch even though I found him a bit smug when he talks about the idiots who weren’t prepared for the apocalypse. Anyhow I liked his relationships with Gabby and Bobby. I didn’t think that his feelings for Kara were really explored very much, but then there is very little character development in these books. That being said I did find this kind of fun.
It's good post-ap mixed with some urban fantasy. There are good characters, a rich universe, and a nice rhythm. It is very easy and very pleasant to read. This is pure entertainment, which spares us the pseudo-philosophical introspections that often pollute the post-ap works. In the radius of reserves, I'd put a flat on some logical sequences of the story, not always convincing. You know, when characters are making weird or dumb decisions? And the book ends in the middle of a rescue mission, I don't understand why. (Well, maybe to make us buy the next part... Boohoo!) More surprising: there is a first part of the adventures of Scratch, a prequel, which very curiously does not really have strong links with this part. As if the author had written it without having read his notes on his first books. Nevermind, if you do not fear universes mixing zombies, werewolves, vampires and Co., do not hesitate, it's a good entertainment.
This author doesn't let you down. The second book is every bit as good as the first.
The main character continues to do the best that he can and that's quite good. It's very similar to the TV show "Rockford Files" or "Supernatural". You will be caught up in the character's life quickly, I think and rooting for him from the first chapter.
This one was better than the first. Our guy actually gets a little family on the road. Now I hated that this picked up almost a decade later than book one and he has a girlfriend. I haven't felt any connection between the two at all so what happens to her isn't really on my radar or do I care. That's an issue as this is all about saving his girlfriend who we just don't know. We met her once barely. It would have been better to place this right after the first and let us see him meeting and growing to care about her so that we would too. It would have been nice to see settlement building. It's actually like there is a book missing between one and two. I pretty much don't care about anyone in the settlement and as at least the next book and this one is about reaching them, the author failed because I should care. Except the fact that they are humans, they have no meaning to me the reader. My next issue was Scartchs talk with Tabby about not killing human s when they are talking about a guy that beats and rapes women and takes slaves to be sexually abused and eaten and who knows what else. Sorry dude, some people need killing and when there aren't many humans left the last thing you need are to leave living those who will prey and kill those decent ones left. It's good to try to keep her from becoming a monster, but that was really bad advice. I also took a star off for the cliffhanger. I know the series is complete, but if I was reading and had to wait for the actual action to happen, I would have been mad. I hate cliff hangers.
I really did not want to like this book - apocalyptic fiction is not a favorite of mine. I only tried it out because the Junkyard Druid appears in later books and I like to read everything my favorite characters are in.
However, I found the story and the characters to be very enjoyable and I'm glad to have started the series. I like when my very unreal stories have a real feel to them, when the actions/reactions of the characters make sense to me.
It also helps my enjoyment that he doesn't make the monsters completely mindless. There seems to be levels, I'm guessing because there's a relationship between Scratch's world and the Junkyard Druid's - though I'm not really sure yet as the author likes to spool his threads out slowly.
One thing that worries me is that he's a big fan of cliffhangers. It's fine now since I'm catching up on a series that has several books out. I'm worried that it'll be annoying when I wait for future editions, depending on how reliable he is with publishing new books. On a positive note though, he seems to use them as a prelude to the next book as opposed to not quite finishing the current book.

So there are worse things out there things zombies are afraid of and of course the government is partly to blame love the extra scary things can’t wait to find out what happens next!
This is an absolutely fantastic series! Even better than the first book! I highly recommend the Audio version of the book!!! I finished this in less than 48h! Highly Recommended!!
This audio was much better than the first. I guess I just had to get use to the monotone of scratches voices. Pretty good book sure had me interested. .
As always the author has delivered a great book. You can vividly picture life after the apocalypse. It’s well written and leaves you hanging for the next book in the series, because you know it’s going to be great.
I’d still like details on the effects caused by the nuclear bombs. Other than the EMP we’ve seen virtually nothing. Whatever happened to the specter of nuclear winter, or other expected problems There’s even a whole new taxonomy of monsters to learn:
Zombies: Slow but strong Ghouls–Zombies 2.0–quicker, with thick skulls Revenants: Undead humans who reason, and are strong, fast, and wily. Vampiric Humanoids: These come in multiple flavors. Most prominent are the ‘nosferatu': quick, tough to kill, and creepy as all hell “Atypicals”, such as lycanthropes (…and?)
In this volume there’s the post-apocalyptic standard “save the women and children from being raped” scene. At least this book doesn’t threaten rape in every other paragraph the way some do. We also meet some new characters: Gabby, who is young but shows great skill at dealing with zombies. Also Bobby, a lycanthrope who accepts Scratch as an alpha. A doctor is working nearby on super-soldier type experiments, and the doc would be happy to take Scratch on as a guinea pig. He spends a good portion of the book debating with himself as to whether he should do this or not. Meanwhile, there are civilians to rescue and monsters of the human variety inside a quasi-military compound.
“Being chased by zombies tends to change your priorities.”
Scratch Sullivan continues his war against the undead. Same as the previous book the undead can be vampire, zombie, or werewolf. In this episode Scratch rescues a young girl surviving hunter named Gabby who tags along with him through the adventure. Turns out there is more to Gabby than meets the eye. Same goes for Bobby whom he rescued from a group of punters. Punters? Haven’t figured out why they are called punters; maybe I missed it. The group, by necessity finds an Army scientist Captain who has been involved in experimentation on the paranormal. It is learned that she, the scientist, has also been overseeing the inoculation of Gabby. This inoculation is the basis of the Army’s experiments to create super-soldiers giving the recipient enhanced abilities. Captain says she can do the same for Scratch helping him with his mission against the paranormal. Should Scratch accept? What are the consequences or long term effects? This is the crux of the remaining story. Great characters, great follow-up from the previous book. I look forward to more from this author. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I thoroughly enjoyed THEM: Zombie Apocalypse Season One. The characters are well-developed and the storyline is completely different than any I've encountered thus far. There are not only zombies, but other terrifying creatures as well, all just salivating to take a big bite out of Scratch, Gabby and, somehow, do in Bobby. I can't wait to continue on with the series and see what terror transpires next. If you're a fan of zombie novels and wouldn't mind a few extra monsters thrown in, you'll love THEM!!!
This series definitely took a turn I hadn’t been expecting. I knew a little bit about how this world came to be thanks to its sister series, but to see things in action is a whole other can of worms. Scratch Sullivan is a fun protagonist who is constantly taking on monsters that would otherwise be out of his weight class thanks to his fighting skills and quick thinking. Can’t wait to continue this series!
This is really one of THE best series I have read. Great characters, you feel like they live right on your block (or at least wished they did). Well written too with just a hint of humor in all the right places. And now on to the next story.
Mr. Massey has gotten it just right with this book. I loved it. His ZA is perfection in the details, the characters and the writing. If you like ZA books, you're going to love these. I Highly Recommend this Series!
It's nice to discover another good author with multiple stories to tell...although I'm not into serials, this one has piqued my interest and I will follow it...
A very interesting mixture of all sorts of apocalyptic monsters, and the survivors who fight them. Really enjoyed the story, and look forward to the sequel!
This book is for apocalyptic/zombies/superhuman/vampire/werewolf lovers. It is very well written and you cant put the book away until you read it. And then you just want some more!
