A Heart's Gift

Rate this book
Is a marriage of convenience the answer? Franklin Vine has worked hard to build the ranch he inherited into one of the most successful in the majestic Colorado mountains. If only he had an heir to one day inherit the legacy he's building. But he was burned once in the worst way, and he doesn't plan to open his heart to another woman. Even if that means he'll eventually have to divide up his spread among the most loyal of his hired hands. When Lorinda Sullivan is finally out from under the control of men who made all the decisions in her life, she promises herself she'll never allow a man to make choices for her again. But without a home in the midst of a hard Rocky Mountain winter, she has to do something to provide for her infant son. A marriage of convenience seems like the perfect arrangement, yet the stakes quickly become much higher than either of them ever planned. When hearts become entangled, the increasing danger may change their lives forever.

I am a sucker for the marriage of convenience trope and this was definitely one of those. I really enjoyed this story. The characters were very well done and so is the plot. The story is about Lorinda and Franklin. Lorinda is a sweet, innocent young woman living in the mountains of Colorado. She has past hurts of abuse from her father and marries Mike who although keeps his hands to himself but believes that women should not really have a say in things more of the barefoot and pregnant kind of man. When tragic news comes at her door she has to make a decision on what to do, especially since she is with child. She decides the best thing to do is leave and stay with Franklin Vine in his ranch along his housekeeper.

Franklin feels a pull towards Lorinda and he cannot explain it. I absolutely loved the conflict within him as he tries to figure out why he is feeling this way. (Also the way the author describes him, he sounds absolutely yummy... definitely swoon worthy material!) He has been hurt before and wants no part of it but at the same time he wants an heir for his ranch. Goodness the way he is with the baby is heartwarming. You definitely fall for him immediately and are rooting for him the entire time. Although there are times you want to bop him upside the head as he keeps his feelings for Lorinda inside instead of just letting her know.

There are some surprising elements that I was not expecting in this story which were great! It definitely kept me reading. I loved how the author weaves faith through out the whole story but its not preachy. This is also one of the first books that I have read that addresses nursing/breastfeeding so openly. I enjoyed this aspect of the book very much as you don't see that very often.

I wish that we would of read more of Lorinda letting Franklin know why she was so reserved and her back story with her father so that's the only thing that was missing for me. Despite that I thought the story was very good and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Out of the ashes of a broken heart comes beauty for Lorinda. She has so much to grieve but she needs to carry on. I wondered what she would do after losing her husband, house, being pregnant and alone. Living in the mountains during this time was hard. The snow was deep and there was no way to travel to town. I loved Lorinda’s spirit of never giving up. The child she is carrying is comforting but she knows she needs help.

Franklin is a good man and takes Lorinda in when she is struggling to survive. His idea to marry her was more of a convenience but maybe it would be good for both of them. I liked how the author shows us that a man can love a child even if it id not his. It was obvious that Franklin was starting to have feelings for Lorinda. It is easy to feel like you are there watching the story unfold. The author does a great job of giving us details that relate to the time period and I love stories about the 1800s. We experience the emotions that Lorinda has when she sees Franklin with her baby. It is clear to see the love he has for the child. There are a few surprises in the story that added a bit of drama. I loved how evident it was that Franklin and Lorinda were starting to feel more like husband and wife. It may have been a marriage of convenience but God knew exactly why he brought Lorinda to Franklin’s home that day.

The story has romance, suspense and two people who both want to find love. I loved reading how Franklin started to let go of his past and start to trust Lorinda. He is such a great character. He is very protective and will do anything to keep his family safe. The ending is exciting and filled with the knowledge that God protects His people. Evil will try to come in and pull Lorinda and Franklin apart, but with faith they will overcome. Beautiful story of faith, trust , blessings and accepting each other.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

A Heart’s Gift is set in the beautiful Colorado mountains, and a very good read. This is my first book by Lena Dooley and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Dooley does an amazing job with the vivid descriptions of Colorado, bringing the lives of the people in the 1890’s Era to life. The rustic mountains wasn’t an easy place to live, a lot if hard work for everyone. These characters were so wonderful playing their parts so well. Their struggles were many, but the perseverance during their trials was real and strong. I appreciate the way this author weaves the Christian life in the lives of her characters, and brings faith to life between them. This is truly a story of forgiveness, faith, redemption and love, a strong and enjoyable couple. And even though we know what the ending will somewhat be, it was still so interesting and enjoyable to follow the journey with Franklin and Lorinda and witness all that happened between them. I give this one Five Stars!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Marriage of convenience in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Lorinda is a strong woman who has grown a lot through her experiences, and has to do what is best for her child. I liked how she grew in her faith over the course of the book and found a true friend in Franklin's housekeeper. I admired how she held to her faith and kept trusting, despite the difficult circumstances.

Franklin is a good man, he tends to keep more to himself, but I loved how he fell in love with Michael and how the baby really opened up the world of possibilities for him. I will admit that I did get frustrated with him for being really in his head and letting what ifs stop him from pursuing a relationship with Lorinda sooner.

Overall it was a enjoyable read, though the pace slowed down in the med section for a bit, but it does end with a bang. My favorite character was Lorinda for her faith and willingness to sacrifice to give her son a chance at a stable home and a bright future. A sweet marriage of convenience love story set in the Rocky Mountains.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

A Heart's Gift " is the first full length novel that I have read by Lena Nelson Dooley, but it won't be the last. This book has mystery, suspense, romance and it makes the reader believe in the power of love. This story isn't all rosy, the reason that Franklin and Lorinda meet and the reason that they are able to have a marriage of convenience.

There are surprises in the book that I didn't see coming and I like the faith elements that the characters portray without the book being preachy. Subjects like intimacy and breast feeding are handled honestly and without a lot of graphics which makes this book one that I would recommend to readers who likes clean romance.

Franklin is the type of character that wife wish their husband imitated.

I received a contemporary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

I'm kind of shocked. I'm not generally a fan of historicals. Or Western/ranch stories. Or marriages of convenience. But this one really surprised me in a very good way.
Fantastic emotional impact, beautiful spiritual detail, and an altogether breath-stopping romance. I loved Lorinda and Franklin, their characters are incredibly well drawn and the reader will feel connected to them. The historical detail was thoroughly researched and accurate to the time period.
So color me surprised and I hope you will be too.

A Heart’s Gift

I meet Lena Nelson Dooley a few years ago. When she asked me if I had read any of her books, I was ashamed to admit that I had not. Even until now, I kept passing her books by. Not because I didn’t think I would like them, I was just too crazy with everything else. Then, this little gem crossed my path and the synopsis intrigued me enough that I figured “Why Not.” It was definitely time to see what her writing was like.

A Heart’s Gift is a touching tale of miss guided attraction, learning to accept the gifts given in the package they come in, and cherishing those God places in your care. There were tender moments–like when Franklin was interacting with the baby. Then, there were page-turning moments–like at the end (I’m not telling you.) Lastly, there were moments I wanted to throw my Kindle in irritation.

For all the sweetness, hints of steam, bits of suspense, and straight to the point facts of life (like what happens between husband and wife)–there were a few moments that just left me rolling my eyes.

First, I don’t like reading whiney characters. Especially if their dilemma is their own foolishness and it is all you read about when that character comes into the scene. If one character hadn’t been so caught up. on “who did them wrong” maybe there could have been more of something else. But that’s just me.

Second, some of the moments felt redundant or lacking in realistic conversation.

I’m not going to tell you I hated the story. The story was good and written well in a technical way, and as I said before, it did have many great points. I just don’t think I will be putting this book in my personal collection.

But don’t take my word for it. If you enjoy marriage of convenience and historical romance that flows well and sweet to read, then this book is for you.

A Heart's Gift in the first book in the Love's Road Home Series by Lena Nelson Dooley. I cannot remember reading another book by this author. It flows so well, getting you caught up in the mystery surrounding Lorinda’s past and her current plight. While Franklin Vine is interesting he is an open book to the reader. To the community, not so much. A rancher who is loyal but distance, kind but not overly friendly and one who is determined never to be hurt again.

The series is aptly named because it is love and kindness that show Lorinda and Franklin the way home, a new home, a real home. The surrounding community and the others on the ranch all have a hand in helping these two. However none are my favorite more than Mrs. Oleson. What a wonderful character she is, giving the acceptance and guidance that Lorinda needs. This really fits with the story since Lorinda had thought, “She was never going to give any man a measure of control over her, no matter how safe he made her feel.” Since it would take time for Lorinda and Franklin to work through their past hurts Mrs. Oleson fills the gap. Over time this marriage of convenience worked though all those emotions and events naturally, just flowing as if it could really have happened. Then the suspense and danger as well as several unusual turns in the story makes it unput-downable.

I will be looking for more books by this author especially more in the series after reading A Heart’s Gift. This is quality historical Christian fiction that is romantic, family driven and as exciting as any wild west story could be.

The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

A Heart’s Gift, by Lena Nelson Dooley, is the first book in the Love’s Road Home series. Lorinda left her father’s home and married Michael. Before leaving on a two week trip, he stored up supplies for the long winter ahead. He didn’t return as expected and was brought back to their home by neighbor Franklin to be buried. Franklin offers to take her to his home but she refuses. Only when fire destroys her home does she go with Franklin.

Franklin has been hurt in the past and refuses to let himself let another person into his heart. When Lorinda gives birth to Michael’s son, he offers her marriage and a home to have Michael as his heir.

This is a wonderful historical Christian story that focuses on helping others, forgiveness and second chances. The writing is so clear is to easy to envision the surroundings and imagine the fear Lorinda lived with. It is easy to understand how Lorinda does not like having a man make decisions for her. One of the things that stands out to me is that Lorinda and Michael only had a Bible to read and they read it every day. I also enjoyed how Franklin’s housekeeper was so involved with helping him see the needs of his home and of others. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the rest in the series.

I received an ebook copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit, this is my honest review.

I was excited to read this book and was not disappointed. I really enjoyed the setting of the mountains in Colorado. Lorinda is a unique character and I really enjoyed reading her story play out in the pages. I thought her character really grew and was well written. Honestly all of the characters I thought were well done and a marriage of convenience is always entertaining. The story line flowed nicely and I really couldn't put it down. The ending is what makes this a four star book to me. I thought it was rushed and thrown together. I didn't love how predictable it was. I still really enjoyed this story but I do wish the ending wasn't so rushed. That being said I now think I need to get my hands on many more of Lena Nelson Dooley's books!

If you enjoyed historical fiction and marriage of convenience I think you would enjoy this story.

Four Stars.

I really enjoyed this story. It was a lovely historical story, with some good plot lines within it.
I loved that in this one, she did have the mother breastfeeding her baby. It was big part of the story, and they took care with using wet nurses when it was needed as the plot progressed. However, I felt that the author did not do complete research.
Breastfeeding was a huge story line, and yet at one point of the story, the mother goes more than 72 hours without breastfeeding and suffers no physical consequences. I felt this took the book from a four star, down to a three star in my mind. It would have added to the story, if she had just researched slightly, what that might have done to the mother.

However, over all, I was pleased that for the most part, the author did a great job of sticking to historically accurate info at that time period.
It was cute and well written, a story of healing and love.

Colorado - 1893
With a sweep of her magnificent pen, Lena Nelson Dooley writes a poignant, soul-stirring romantic suspense set against the backdrop of the majestic snow covered Rockies. Multi-award winning author, Lena Nelson Dooley, is an expert at writing stories that tug at the readers' heart strings and leave them overflowing with emotion. Combining family, faith, a smidgen of suspense, romance, and a baby who is utterly irresistible—all neatly tie together this exemplary novel with a pretty little bow just in time for Christmas gifts! The romantic tension between hero and heroine was so palatable and thick one could cut it with a knife, and the secondary characters were endearing to say the least (with the exception of a couple of nefarious critters!) Guaranteed to warm the cockles of your heart—be sure to order your copy of A Heart's Gift today!

`A Heart's Gift` is a family drama novel by Lena Nelson Dooley. The setting is Colorado - 1893.
I felt the characters were portrayed well as the storyline intermingled throughout the novel. The novel was a bit long, a few chapters shorter would help in keeping the reader's interest. However, there are at least three storylines: a murder mystery, a marriage of convenience, and a suspenseful ending.

I would recommend this novel to readers interested in westerns and historical romance. I give this book 4* out of 5* and I want to thank the author for sending me the book to review. I love the cover and feel it portrays what the novel is about.

A lovely romance

A lovely romance although it got a rough start. The author developed the characters well. There was some great action towards the end although it took a while to get to it. The questions raised early in the book were resolved with a HEA ending.

Comment: I honestly didn't have high hopes for the books since I think I hadn't read anything by this author before so, I didn't really know what to expect.

Description: Is a marriage of convenience the answer? When hearts become entangled, the increasing danger may change their lives forever.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

Comment: I do have to say though, that while reading the book I was reminded so much about the movie (also a book) Live Comes Softle by Janette Oke... the story are quite similar in some aspects.

POV: The story is told with a dual POV in which Lorinda and Franklin are the ones to tell the story.

Tropes: Marriage of Convenience, Past Scars, Ranch Life, Sworn Off Relationships, Widower and some more.

Genre: Like I said, it is a Christian Fiction book and if I were to be more specific it is a Historical Christian Fiction book.

Likes: I did like how the story unfolded. The romance didn't feel rush and was done quite natural. The faith content also ended up being present and constant throughout the story which was a factor I love since I really dislike books that are categorized as CF and the only thing they add is a prayer or mentioning going to church 🫠 The ending was cute and acceptable in my eyes so, bonus points for that.

Dislikes: The only thing I didn't exactly love or like is that the introduction is quite long and a little prosy..., BUT.., like some other books I've read, in this case it was necessary to add to the stories depth and timeliness. In other words, it was necessary to understand the story.

Conclusion: I think I will consider reading more books by Lena Nelson since her faith content and romance stories seem good.

In frontier Colorado, a young wife has been taught by her husband to protect his property. He rescued her from a horrific life with her father and uncle, eloping and taking her with him to mine for gold in the Rockies. He leaves her with 2 packets of gold dust and goes on about his business. Lorinda scares off one drifter, but her next visitor has come to bury her husband on his land, unaware that he has a wife. Their last liaison resulted in a pregnancy. The cabin they built is set on fire by an arsonist, and the same rancher comes to her rescue - she escapes the cabin barely.
Franklin Vine is the closest neighbor to the Sullivan land, and he and his men are the ones who buried her husband Mike and came to her rescue when they saw the fire. He takes her to his place. It is obvious she has not been eating well; she is too thin. A few weeks of good meals puts some meat back on her bones and gives her the strength to have her baby.
Franklin's fiance was sweet talked into eloping with his best friend, and Franklin isn't interested in marriage. He does, however, want an heir, and the baby has already captured his heart. He proposes a marriage of convenience to give him an heir and her the protection of his household.
Unexpectedly, a very malnourished and extremely pregnant Miriam, Franklin's ex-fiance, appears at the ranch outskirts and is led to the house. Unable to survive the birth despite the medicines and good food given her, she asks Franklin and Lorinda if they will adopt her baby, and puts it in writing...she dies soon after, and they name the baby Andrew after Franklin's father.
But after their marriage, both begin to wish for the intimacy they originally agreed to forego. Both believe they are the only ones who feel that way. A crisis causes them to re-evaluate their agreement, but will they keep it the way it is, or decide to become man and wife in more than name only?

A Heart’s Gift by talented storyteller Lena Nelson Dooley is a Christian historical romantic fiction book. It has so many twists and turns in it that you will be kept on your toes throughout the entire book. This is Book 1 in the author’s Love’s Road Home Series.

Set in 1890s gold rush era of Colorado, this is the story of Lorinda and Franklin. Their story is touching. The author keeps God and a spiritual message in the forefront of this novel, which is just one of the reasons that I loved it so much.

I was immediately captivated by the story and characters. With her deft writing ability the author took me to the Rocky Mountains to a cattle ranch. I learned a few things while I fell in love with some of her characters and despised the others.

Author Dooley has a wonderful style of writing. Her romance was sweet and yet I could feel the tension building between Lorinda and Franklin. The dialog was authentic and flowed smoothly. Emotions jumped off of the pages and into my heart.

The secondary characters were amazing. I enjoyed the housekeeper. She was a voice of calm and wisdom at times when needed. The heart to heart discussions between men were Right on point. Some even made me chuckle.

I highly recommend this wonderful book. It is full of surprises, life lessons, inspiration, mystery, danger, and romance. I found it to be a page turner that I was unable to set down. It receives a 5 out of 5 stars from me.

I am a huge fan of Historical Fiction, add in some Romance, and I can
guarantee I get reeled into the book. A Heart's Gift by Lena Nelson
Dooley, was a book that fit all those and more.

Franklin Vine runs a ranch in the Colorado Mountains and he would LOVE to
have a child that would one day inherit it from him. The issue though
is Franklinhas sworn off Women. Lorinda Sullivan has been controlled by men
for as long as she can remember. She has an infant son and is a single mom.
She is worried about living arrangements for the long Rocky Mountain winter
for her and her son, as she doesn't have a home right now. Franklin and Lorinda
paths cross. They are both unsure of what the future might hold, but also think
that an "arranged marriage" might help both of them at this point. Franklin
could pass the ranch onto Lorinda's son and they would have a place to live.
Their plan might be in jeopardy due to some danger targeted at Lorinda. Will Franklin
do all he can to save and protect Lorinda and her son? Will there be a long
term romance and marriage for the couple?

I absolutely LOVED this book! The characters and the storyline flow really
well. The Historical time was well researched by the author. I dove right into
the book and finished it in just a few hours. A Hearts Gift is Book 1 in the
Loves Road Home series and I excitedly await more books in the series!

As I read this story, I marvelled at Lorinda Sullivan's inner strength. After enduring a traumatic childhood filled with abuse from her father and brother, she experiences more grief when her husband is killed and she is left to spend a winter alone in the Rocky Mountains. How can a young pregnant widow expect to endure a severe Colorado winter in the year 1893?

Lena Nelson Dooley has written an intriguing novel about two needy people who enter into a marriage of convenience. Lorinda and her baby boy need a home and Franklin Vine needs an heir, so a 'marriage in name only' seems to be the perfect answer. Perfect...until Lorinda witnesses Franklin's love and acceptance of baby Michael and has her perception of controlling men completely altered. Perfect...until Franklin learns what a kind, loyal woman is really like! Will their marriage of convenience agreement succeed?

A Heart's Gift is a heartwarming, historical romance filled with adventure, danger, and suspense but there is also a sweet romance and a strong faith message that runs throughout the story. I recommend this book to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Book Tours. There was no obligation for a favorable review. These are my own opinions.

With a rough start in life as a child, Lorinda thought her life was on to greener pastures with her husband Mike suddenly and tragically dies. She feels as if she now gets the opportunity to stand on her own two feet until things change once again. At the same time, Franklin is nursing a wound from a broken relationship and wonders if he will ever trust a woman again. They both try to sort out what God has planned for them in the circumstances that come their way. They think they have the perfect solution when several obstacles come up to make them second guess.

Forgiveness and beginning to trust again is a central theme to this story. It was quite a process both characters had to go through that the readers walk with them. I really liked both characters and the depth of their character. It felt like the characters became friends as I was reading along.

I had never read a book by Lena Nelson Dooley but this definitely will not be my last one. I appreciated how God’s truths and scriptures were sprinkled within the story at the appropriate times and genuinely felt like the character was using the text for the situation. Lastly, I felt like the cover was gorgeous and was drawn to the book.

I would really recommend reading this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

I absolutely love marriage of convenience stories. It's always fun to see how people end up in situations and choose it. A Heart's Gift is the first full length novel that I have read by Lena Nelson Dooley. I have read one of her novellas that was in the Great Lakes Lighthouse Brides collection. A Heart's Gift is a well written historical Christian Fiction book. The author has done wonderful research to ensure that the story was as accurate as possible. The setting is Colorado in 1893. This is a fun time period to read about since it's post Civil War and the expansion west. Lorinda and Franklin both have hurt and baggage from their past. Franklin does NOT want to open his heart again. He knows that he needs to produce an heir. Lorinda has escaped a past that held her down and kept her from feeling freedom. She now has to find a way to provide for her infant son. Lorinda and Franklin both know that they need each other - but can they find love. This book has a bit of everything. It has some mystery, suspense, romance and is heartwarming. It contains well written characters. They are real feeling and flawed. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I love a good historical fiction book and I was pleased to see that this is going to be a series. This novel takes place out in the wilds of Colorado. Okay so maybe it’s not quite that rustic but it’s not modern day that’s for sure.

Franklin and Lorinda have both had hard times come in their lives though others might not see them. When they have a marriage of convenience it is definitely not about romance or any other thing besides survival.

This is a sweet book about something that happened a lot in our past and actually does still happen today if you look around for it. A marriage of convenience just made sense. This book does end up giving you some romance but also some suspense which is a nice change from just the tried and true you know what is going to happen romances.

I loved the book and can’t wait to see what comes next in the series. I hope you give the book a read because you’re going to love it as much as I do.

I adore marriage of convenience stories, and this one is about two people who actually genuinely like each other. They both want to have a real family, but both are way to stubborn to sit back and listen, to common sense or their feelings.

Understandably, Franklin Vine is a wounded hero. His first intended left him for another man and he has decided to close up his heart nice and tight.

Lorinda Sullivan just wants to be her own woman. She took orders from her abusive father until her late husband rescued her. Then he did not give her much say either. Lorinda was trapped in her cabin in the wilderness and in a life where men devalued her worth. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Franklin and Lorinda find each other and marry. Both a bit gun shy but not at all immune to one another.

However their marriage turns out very differently than what they thought. They actually glimpse freedom in love if they could just grasp it. Throw a mystery into this slow burn romance and you have a really exceptional story.

A Heart’s Gift is about a young woman who enters into marriage with a rancher. She is expecting a baby at the beginning of the story. Much of the remainder of the book is about Lorinda becoming a mother. Her growing feelings for Franklin also help develop the story.

This is a gentle, easy read without much conflict. It is somewhat predictable as the story unfolds, but also very warm. From reading this book, I can believe that the author, like the heroine in the story, has a tender heart. I feel like I got to know Lena Nelson Dooley as a writer through the characters she developed in this book.

For anyone who enjoys tender historical romance stories, this book will certainly entertain. It has a wonderful surprise ending, so you will want to stay with the story line all the way through. This book also has a really nice cover. The blue sky and mountain backdrop stand out to me.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
