Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.
When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.
At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.
Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.
superb blend of mystery, fantasy, religion reinterpreted and more!
Superb bundle from a superb writer! Steve Higgs has knocked the ball out of the park with this set of stories. As a ‘serious reader,’ I began book one about a week ago and have just completed the collection, having let everything else go - good thing I’m retired! I haven’t even uncrated my new Les Paul Studio guitar after it’s arrival a few days ago! The plot lines (good luck guessing where and how things will go!) are superb, the writing itself just flows effortlessly and smoothly. You can’t help but care about the characters and their travails… I can’t wait for the next installment/collection to come out! STEVE! Puh-leeze stay in tiptop shape so that you can continue writing cuz I can’t get enough of it! (signed: a septuagenarian reader/fan)
This was a bundle with the whole series included. I really enjoyed the characters and storyline. I was a tad confused by the ending but all in all a great series.
A combination of fantasy with detection. Starts off very YA, but gradually works up to a serious good vs evil vs neutral thriller with distinctly religious overtones, including the end of days and Armageddon, churches and synagogues. Full of shapeshifters, magical and magnetic powers, lights that shoot from your hand, ditto lightning. Be prepared for ley lines, line energy, source energy and soul energy, wizards, demons, familiars, werewolves, witches, traitors, gindars, shilts and disappearing villains. Oh, and angels. Very appropriate, very entertaining, actually like a computer game, but a little too long. The book has very strong, very tough, characters, both men and women.
I did wonder why around 80% of the names began with an A. The rest are fairly even distributed around the rest of the alphabet, with B, G, O, S and Z.
I love this series. It has the opposite premise of Blue Moon Investigations ( all of which I have also read and loved). Here the supernatural is real and gritty. Can’t wait to see what happens with the rest of the series (am half way through The Armour of God at the moment!). Steve is a really creative writer.
Those 1800 plus pages go by quickly and there's more to come! Steve Higgs, puts a truly unique spin on humanity's attempts throughout the ages, to explain the world around us. But let's not get to deep here! Higgs takes us on a darn good time doing so! The only thing I found a little distracting at times is when the editing staff jump back and forth between American and European idioms, (parking lot/car park), is just one example. Picking one and sticking with it, depending on what part of the world the speaker's character is from would be more cohesive. Anyway, I'm looking forward to book #10!
The first several novels of the saga were really good, introducing the wizard, the werewolf, and the warrior in a unique concept of distorted history, revealing the truth about angels and demons. The development of each of these adult characters was intentional and engrossing with captivating supporting cast and subplots. But as the story wove on and other heroic characters were introduced to take center stage, the development faltered badly. The need to have four major characters (who turn out to be among the most powerful of the magic users) be rather bland and unimaginative portrayals of teenage girls is questionable. And none of these later characters was granted the superb treatment of the initial three. By this point the wizard and the werewolf disappointingly become bit players through the end.
With a terribly involved plot leading up to Armageddon, by 75% through the collection the battle scenes became nearly nonstop and failed to move the story appreciably forward. This resulted in a severe case of "oh, look, the hero inexplicably survived yet again, yawn." There's so much destruction, slaughter, and deaths of barely mentioned characters, it's rather numbing. Overwhelming odds are exciting; truly ridiculous odds become nearly satirical. And how many times can a major character realize this is it, the big one, they're going to die, and then be saved just to face it once again, and again, and again...
By the conclusion, virtually all of the characters become secondary to the intricacies of the plot. The day is ultimately saved by a Deus Ex Machina, NEVER a good choice for a 10 novel saga.
This tale easily would have been improved by being 3 or 4 novels shorter. I get the feeling the author, known for his prolific output, got caught up on quantity over quality by the middle of the tale. The editing got progressively worse as it went on. One other point I question is the reviews citing the humor of these books. There were a couple funny moments throughout, but not at all worthy of the comparison to Pratchett.
So I'm on the fence. I LOVED the first several novels in this collection. They were top notch fantasy. But it really faltered along the way and by the end was a slog. It's a shame.
I didn’t even finish the first book in this. I wasn’t a fan of the writing style and it was tedious from page one…
I think I made it to chapter ten and I was skipping a lot from sheer boredom. Idk how one writes magic and makes it sound clinically boring but it was achieved here.
Reading this series has been a mammoth read, which I’m pleased to have spent time on.
Steve Higgs creates a magical world based on our known world with twists and turns, creatures of all fantasy types.
I enjoyed the parallel world building and character development of several of the lead protagonists. Otto, Anastasia, Katja and of course my favourite Zachary were great characters with their own internal dialogues well explained.
I really enjoyed the series and would recommend it.
You’ll spot some reviews of book 2, which question some of the language used which on the face of it comes across as misogynistic. I won’t go into and quote the paragraphs for spoilers sake. My view however, is that with a decent edit, this could be updated and brought into a character narrative. At present, it reads as the author narrative rather than a character narrative. Even then, if it’s changed to character narrative, it doesn’t quite fit with what we know of the character who it seems to be near to.
That said, please continue with the series. It’s worth it. The story goes on building, introducing new characters who you will want to cheer on.
Steve Higgs started his fun series about humans with magic and magical creatures exiled to The Realm of False Gods (ebook) by a death curse in 2020. It took him eleven books to finish the series in 2023. The curse is breaking down allowing human magic and for the demons and angels, who the curse had made immortal, to visit Earth. Otto Schneider is a private detective who uses his magical abilities to locate missing people. A kidnapped girl leads him to the realm and eventually, in fighting the demons, strengthens his abilities. Anastasia Aaronson, a veteran crippled by a landmine, soon gets into the fight by hunting for magical armor. Others, like three teenage sisters, join in until the curse breaks and the demons are thrown to Earth and use their magic to conquer Earth. This is a very exciting series, often very intense as Steve Higgs likes to put his characters into impossible situations and have them work out how to rescue themselves. I really enjoyed the series and am looking for other books from this author.
I have read several reviews of Steve Higgs' books and wanted to read them. My library did not carry the digital versions and I do not have a book allowance. However, when prime days offered this series for a great price I seized my opportunity to finally read some of his books. Soo glad I did! This series had me reading every chance I had. Lunch breaks at work, as soon as I got home, and even while I was eating and preparing dinner. This is a great series and will keep it in my library for enjoyment again later on. I was however sad that it took me so long to get around to buying some of his books. Broke or not I will be buying more!!! If you are on the fence about purchasing this series, just think about a 5ft nothing bad ass chick beating the hell out of other worldly beings. Yes, there are wizards and werewolves too. Come on fellow book nerd girl power buy this series you will not regret it!
Really struggled thru this series, the first couple of books where ok but when I had found out about the series on Facebook the ad said it was funny. I have found no humor in this series. It gets quite tedious as in every book they explain about the mortal and immortal realm. Otto was a main character to start with and seemed to have a personality and in the later books they made him out to be moody and on his own mission and above everyone else. Once they started bringing in new characters it got to the point do I really care.... The book with the 3 sisters was the most tedious boring book I have read and I stopped with the series. The only character that seemed to develop was Daniel. Just seemed the author was trying to put words on a page.
Steve Higgs has been compared to Terry Pratchett.... I sort of see why.... ish. There's a lot of humour and a lot of jeopardy in the stories (and also a fair bit of repetition if, like me, you binge read the whole series.)
I thoroughly enjoyed all the books in turn and would happily recommend them to anyone with a fair chunk of days free for reading.
The stories flowed from each other and kept the interest throughout. I was kept engaged with the wide range of characters.
I'll be starting the Blue Moon Investigations boxed set shortly from this author, so high hopes the quality writing will continue to that series.
are.Steve Higgs is a master storyteller! The series has everything! It has demons it has angels it has monsters from the dark depths of the Soul. One of the more interesting twists to this series is that every one of the characters is flawed! The demons have soft spots. The angels are Criminal and venal and jealous. The major heroic character is a mutilated cripple with an attitude problem. Read these stories and you will realize that your life is a piece of cake and you should take time to appreciate the benefits you have.
I like the rotating of the new characters as the continuing overall arc progresses. Couple thoughts, not the biggest fan of the “tween-ish/Twilight” romance vibe. Plus it’s a bit conflicting when in one story Zac is ogling the breasts and posterior of a gal and then in another story you have underage teenage girls in angsty romance. Also, and I understand this is a American-centric opinion, but when writing from an American viewpoint, perhaps have an American editor/proofreader clean up the slang and definitions, ie. “kerb” vice “curb.”
Absolutely love the Blue Moon series, so gave this series a try. Though in a different vein, it honestly is just as entertaining. Great world building, interesting characters and a lot of the same snark and humor. A great read for fans of fantasy and magic. Thank you Mr. Higgs for another favorite series to add to my list. I can’t wait for more to come in this universe.
This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and this is my honest review.
There are some books that make me upset that there is no more to read... Yet. This story is ambitious in its reach. There are at least 3 separate main themes which twist and turn around each other. But don't think that this makes the story hard to keep up with. It doesn't. The segues are effortless. I care about these characters too. They are fully realised and have good and bad qualities. I cannot wait for more!
I'm not into Urban Fantasy. But i love Steve Higgs'' other series, and if is highly rated, so i finally broke down.
I was elated. And hooked after the first chapter. Great characters, great concepts, and great storytelling. No sausage dogs, psychic cats, or other human pets, but there is a werewolf. Or two. You might find yourself rooting for a demon.
Not bad at all. Magic was suppressed by death wish of a supreme being and now is waking up. Weakening of the death wish barrier lets demons (and angels) access to Earth. A hero hiding his magic abilities up to now becomes a Hero saving people and earth’s future from demons who plan to cleanse Earth of humans since all they do is destroy the planet (!). But it’s a bundle of 8 books. I was half way through and needed a break. Will come back to it later
Higgs writes in modules rather than separate stories, I think. His work is intense and well thought out, not overly descriptive or wordy. His humor is quick and simple, teasing not abusive. The characters are well drawn, multidimensional without getting maudlin at parts where grieving could leave them deeply touched. I am seeking out the future episodes of these books because these drew me in and I want to see where Higgs' vision takes us.
This is not a nine book collection. In my opinion to qualify as a book you need at least 250 pages. Anyone who has followed my reviews for any length of time knows that this is my standard and that anything less is a novella or a short story. This is a collection of novellas. Started out okay but really lost interest when it started talking about the armor of god and gods sword. I dropped it at this point.
Are you looking for a fast paced exciting books without all the swearing, sex and obsessive violence, where good battles evil then these are the books for you, think I've read nearly everything that Steve higgs has written and I've never been disappointed. Great characters, good storylines, humour and sass. I don't have enough words to say how much I love these books
This has a different take on magic that is pretty cool. He's got characters all over the world and then some. Who you thought was a bad guy maybe isn't or maybe just came to his senses. Either way it's great storytelling! I get Steve lives in England but adv editor should have helped with some of the vocabulary..in England it might be a car park... In the US it's just a parking lot... Lol
I am certain if you are easily offended by things that go against religious norms. This storyline at times will bother you. I am a fairly religious person and I wasn't offended at all because guess what? It's a work of fiction. Very well done fiction. Very engaging, great character development. A well-woven tale. Lots of action and drama and easily a fast page turner.
Are angles and demons are the same as the Bible says? Demons are getting access to earth more and more, the race known by humans as Angels is trying to slow them down. The fight to rule earth is starting and humans are developing magic powers that could help if only the greedy men in charge will get out of the way. Love the box set easy access to most of the series. Good read.
I can't add much more that other reviews haven't already stated. This is a terrific series with a broad range of interesting characters. The magic system is interesting as is the lore behind that magic.
No spoilers here, but I personally found the ending to be a bad choice. There were several aspects of the last 10 pages that were disappointing, and with a saga of this magnitude, it seems a satisfying ending should have been a high priority.
I have read various Steve Higgs series and enjoyed them, but I found this a bit long and it became boring so I was scan reading. It was repetitive in places setting senarios over and over that the reader was already aware of if they started at book 1 , and the fight scenes too long. It was advertised as hilarious but it had no humour in it at all . The end was a twist though which was ok . Disappointed in this series.
A non-stop, incredibly fast paced series. Even the heroine stops and reflects on how so much has happened in an incredibly short time-span!
I will admit to binge-reading this series, I simply had to. From the start, with the unwitting heroine falling into hwr role, till the very end, when the heroine.... uh uh, spoilers
Great characters, clever use of the world stage, magic, mahem, underdogs, this has it all.
