John Wesley was apparently a man who loved God with all his heart AND his mind. If you want to read well-constructed sermons that engage biblical texts as they challenge hearers to take their relationships with God seriously, read this book!

This is not something you'd want to read before bed. But the timeless truths of Wesley's writings are compacted into this volume. Not designed to be read aloud, these sermons are theological statements which succinctly outline Wesley's beliefs and doctrinal interpretations.

Please don't look at my rating and think that these sermons are not worth reading. I just struggle reading through the old English and by the end of figuring out what he was talking about it lost its meaning to me.

After reading and outlining every sermon in this anthology, I have a renewed appreciation for John Wesley's pertinence for today. I am also thrilled to be finished with it. Lol

Once I got used to the 18th century prose, these 50 chronologically ordered and theologically representative written sermons (more like mini essays for the public than transcribed preachings), were thought provoking and helpful for understanding John Wesley. The brief introductions from Outler were also invaluable.

Obviously, Wesley was a well-read and intelligent guy (quotes from ancient and contemporary philosophers, poets, and the Greek New Testament abound), but it was his passion for a practical and vibrant faith expressed in works of mercy and a simple lifestyle that really stood out to me. Definitely worth returning to and mulling over.

What awesome sermons. This man was walking so closely with God. John Wesley's life of travelling the country, (when cars ,planes, buses were not a thing) to pass on the Gospels truth and offer a chance of salvation from the Lord is phenomenal. These sermons have a life changing quality and I think they are pretty amazing God inspiredsermpns that can talk to the very heart of a man /woman.

It's amazing to see how John Wesley's faith developed over the years. The chronological order of this collection of sermons gives the reader a sense of the breadth and depth of his theology.

Be still my beating heart! When I read this anthology
Wesley was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.

By the time I finished, I realized John Wesley is one of my theological heroes for the ages. I love his commitment, I resonate with his theology, and I am amazed at the timelessness of his ideas.

While his sermons on money are usually excellent, on the whole his exegesis isn't great.
