John Holiness of Heart and Life is a six-week study on John Wesley, the major themes of his theology, the spread of Wesleyanism to North America, and renewal in the Wesleyan tradition. Chapters include reflection questions. The Study Guide offers step-by-step plans for each session.
It’s a good book for the average lay person in the church. It’s very accessible, and it provides reflection questions at the end of each chapter. It has the added bonus of providing a study guide to turn it into a group study. While it’s certainly not comprehensive and exhaustive, it’s definitely a good baseline for Methodists and Methodist churches to begin reclaiming their Wesleyan roots.
A good summary of Wesley's thoughts and practices, and how they linger throughout the current United Methodist Church. Not critical — though does give some mention to the failings of the church and the man — but not designed to be critical, rather to be a text to use in a church context.
This book contained exactly what I was looking for. It provided me with the understanding of what being a Methodist means, how John Wesley brought this faith to America, what his beliefs were and how it all evolved into the United Methodist faith today. I gained an understanding of how and why the ministries of our faith were idetnfieid and defined. This book was used in conjunction with a Bible study, coupled with a DVD on John Wesley's life. I would recommend if you are desiring to gain an understanding of Methodism.
This book included a great look into John Wesley's teachings and the doctrines of the Methodist & United Methodist Church. The reflection and discussion questions allows the reader to apply the teachings to their lifestyle and personal views, and critique them against the backdrop of modern life.
I didn't know much about John Wesley, even though I grew up Methodist, and this book gave a great introduction to his life and tenets of his faith. Of course the book was short and focused more on his theology than life, but is a great summary of John Wesley's views.
