Over 800 cartoonists worldwide celebrated 24 Hour Comics Day this year, when cartoonists are challenged to try to create 24 pages of comics in 24 straight hours. Nat Gertler, founder of the day, sifted through the hundreds of submitted stories to find 24 gems, in a range of genres including humor, horror, western and autobiography. Some come from well-established comics creators like Zander Cannon (Top Ten, ReplacementGod) and Ben Avery (Imaginaries, The Hedge Knight), others come from people who have never created a comics story before. And for those who have not noticed the rise of the female cartoonists, half of the stories chosen for the book are from women, whether pros like Lea Hernandez (Hardy Boys, Cathedral Child) and Svetlana Chmakova (creator of Tokyopop's Dramacon) or brand new voices on the comics scene.
A believer in the need for positive, all-ages entertainment, Ben Avery created and wrote Zondervan’s graphic novel series TimeFlyz and the comic book miniseries ArmorQuest to entertain readers with an exciting story, but also inspire and encourage readers to stand up and make a difference in their world. Avery’s comic book career began when he was selected by George R.R. Martin to work as the script adaptor of the comic book fantasy mini-series The Hedge Knight, based on novellas by the New York Times bestselling author. After that, Avery went on to co-write/co-create the critically acclaimed Lullaby and The Imaginaries for Image Comics, co-create and write the children’s literature inspired fantasy The Oz/Wonderland Chronicles, develop and write the historical epic Kingdoms for Zondervan, and the sequel mini-series The Hedge Knight II, published by Marvel Comics. In addition to writing, he has been an English teacher, a college resident director, and a youth treatment specialist for sexually abused children. Avery lives in Indiana with his wife and four children.
A robust collection, with a wide variety of styles and storylines. Because of the diversity there were some stories I weren't fond of (for aesthetic or plot reasons) but overall it was an entertaining and awe-inspiring read. I have a few favorites, including a daydreamer and her teacher, and the Puberty Fairy.
