I can absolutely say that I liked this but didn’t love it as much as I had anticipated and I would honestly generalize this as a decent followup to the ‘Outbreak Task Force’ series.
This time around, we follow ex-Special Forces medic Henry Lee and his partner Ruby Toth who are racing to lock down the CDC's deadly virus samples from terrorists. It has all the notable elements that Julie Rowe is known for: romance, suspense, and brooding heroes who like to get the heroine's panties in a bunch.
The characters were extremely likable. Ruby just seems like a sweetheart but the girl has claws if the wrong buttons are pushed. And our smothering hero? Yummy. He is an ex-veteran that doesn’t let his disability get in the way. Obviously the instant love *cough*instant marriage*cough* is always a downer for me but it was an overall joy to read even though I just had to tilt my head, and squint real hard to pretend I didn’t read see those instant I love yous being thrown around.
Nonetheless, not bad. Now my fingers are crossed that we get Nate’s story next!

“Hell & Back”, by Julie Rowe (Entangled Publishing), has an exciting beginning with a fast-paced suspense plot about bioterrorism and the romantic couple both hiding their mutual attraction and a closed-off, grumpy wounded hero, who shows some interesting, unexpected facets to his character.
Henry and Ruby are likeable, relatable protagonists, both displaying the predictable genre traits, yet showing also some refreshing, humor infused deviations.
Henry is a different kind of wounded hero, an odd combination of alphaness (he’s a former Special Forces soldier, injured in the line of service) some nerdiness and scientific competences (nowadays he’s a virologist). He’s alluring, although besides the powerful physique I kind of forgot how he looked like throughout the story. The self-confidence is interesting, even though sometimes Henry seemed to assume some superman features.
Ruby’s sense of humor and self-deprecating posture mixed with her geeky characteristics make for an interesting heroine.
I liked how the couple danced around each other initially, trying to conceal their attraction, although that didn’t take long.

3.5 stars rounding up
'Hell & Back' is Julie Rowe's high-octane, medical-science thriller that, well, probably sits all too uncomfortable in this virus-ridden world at the moment. Still, it provides some mighty fine hours of escapism, non-stop action and rides the all-engulfing wave of bioterrorism which is pretty much what this entire series is all about.
I typically have a great time with the books in this series and the subject-matter of lab tech works and their military protectors being the front-line of defence is personally one that's fascinating and relevant. It's an exciting and exhilarating peek into an albeit quasi-fictional world that I've never been a part of and probably never will be, which is probably why I've always had a soft spot for this series.
Henry Lee's book is one that's a long time in coming and Rowe has written both him and Ruby as generally likeable and brave protagonists who do have the hots for each other...only that they seem to realise it at the absolute worst time. There's a huge measure of instant lust that is slotted in too hurriedly; their attraction is something I can understand but most bewildering perhaps is the insertion of the sex scenes at the most inappropriate times when the enemy was quite literally knocking down the front door.
I think that the rushed romance (with a HEA that literally ended up with flying towards their sunset) tempered my enthusiasm a little somewhat. It isn't also too much of a surprise that there the destruction is politically-driven when Rowe made it easy to guess who was behind this huge conspiracy given the number of hints that have been dropped throughout the book.
That said, I had a fun time with this - it's solidly written and researched with secondary characters that go on to fill their roles more and more as the series goes on. It'll probably does rank somewhere near the top of pile of my best-loved Rowe suspense reads, but probably isn't quite my favourite.

I've read all of these Outbreak Task Force books to date, but a series detailing the battle of the CDC against unknown terrorists trying to unleash weaponized diseases on the population hit a little too close for comfort in 2020. I have to admit, the familiar themes of this four-year-old series had more of an edge in the wake of Covid-19 and its impact on the world.
I've enjoyed all of these books, and I have been waiting for Henry Lee's book. Sadly, I left disappointed with the romance part, but enjoyed the fast-paced thrill ride for the action-suspense part.
The attack on an inner sanctum of a CDC bio-sample site was interesting to read. Is it at all based in reality? I have absolutely no idea, but most of what I read seemed somewhat plausible. Lots of guns and bombs and flash-bangs are going on, with associated bad guy mercenaries keeping the action hopping.
Unfortunately, the romance fell flat, even though Ruby was adorable. There wasn't enough down time to explore the emotional connection, and the physical connection felt forced, given that it was taking place as bad guys are banging on 20 inch reinforced steel doors. Nope, wouldn't happen. It wasn't believable for either main character's personality, especially in those circumstances. Passion in the time of peril always make me scoff, and this was a doozy.

Get ready because this book is going to give you one heck of a ride. This action-packed novel will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
Ruby just started working at the CDC when threats from a group of terrorists escalate. Her brother is kidnapped and the only way for her to have her twin back is to steal a sample of smallpox. If delivered, the virus could kill millions of people, and finally, to succeed, she would also need to betray her mentor, Henry.
Faced with an impossible choice, Ruby enrolls in a mission with Henry that will bring her closer to the samples. But when things go south and the chemistry between Henry and Ruby heats up, they are both faced with an impossible task to protect the virus and save themselves.
WOW! This book was such a wonderful surprise. This suspense novel will transport you into a world of science, politics, mercenaries, and more. The author delivers this story with a punch. The characters face so many intense situations. I simply couldn't stop reading.
The characters were all wonderful. I was very intrigued trying to figure out where the leak came from. Ruby's family is unique and brought a new dimension to the story. I absolutely adored Ruby's brother. If there was another book, I'm hoping this book to be about him.
As for Ruby and Henry, the chemistry was off-the-charts. I loved that they both had their struggles and insecurities while being total badass characters. I would say if there were a con for me in this book (not really but if there was one) it would be the last chapter. I didn't think it was necessary.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable read, and that I highly recommend. This book will keep you at the edge of your seat so buckle up and be ready for the ride.

J’ai aimé le héros grognon, renfermé, sûr de lui avec juste ce qu’il faut d’incertitude, un peu moins l’héroïne qui passe de sûre d’elle à petite chose fragile selon les situations. Encore beaucoup d’action dans ce tome qui clôt de belle façon l’enquête.

Hell and Back is the fifth book in the Outbreak Task Force series. I read it as a stand alone without reading the previous books! It has a fast passed suspenseful plot that takes the reader on a whirlwind of espionage, blackmail, bioterrorism and the war around it. While so much is going on, romance takes place between two very unlikely character in the middle of trying to protect the world against a bio-engineered pandemic.
This read fell short for me in so many ways. I liked it but didn't love it. The romance was too rushed for me and the person behind the whole conspiracy was obvious too early in the book.

Ex Special Force, Henry Lee works for the CDC On the Outbreak Task Force and is mentoring Ruby Toth. Terrorists attack and they seem to have a lot of inside information. There is plenty of action throughout this book along with a romance. There were a couple of scenes that defied credibility. It held my interest but the reason for the 3* is the scenes I mentioned. I don’t want to put in a spoiler so I am not going into detail. THANK you to net galley for an advanced copy.

The Outbreak Task Force series follows several CDC teams facing a terrorist organization with an unknown goal who doesn’t hesitate to do a max of victims with biological and bacteriological weapons. Hell & Back is the fifth volume, and Henry, a secondary character present from the start, is at the center of the story.
Henry is a CDC virologist, but also a former medic in the Special Forces who lost a leg in combat. He’s self-confident in his work, but like many romantic suspense heroes he’s emotionally closed, and he’s sure his prosthetic leg is an obstacle to any relationship. He’s been attracted to the heroine since she began working under him, but he hides it under his usual grumpy behavior.
Ruby is a heroine who perplexed me at times. She seems strong, she has a strong personality, quick comebacks and some reflexes, but at times she crumbles under pressure in a much unexpected way. And she feels downhearted with the same dark thoughts for long after her decisions when her brother is kidnapped, while Henry has already told her it wasn’t such a big deal and he isn’t mad at her. She’s very attracted to the hero from the start too, but she’s sure he can’t stand her and she’s astounded when she learns the truth.
We see with pleasure main and secondary characters from the previous volumes, with the addition of Ruby’s family, especially her brother who’s a half-geek half-spy character I’d like to see again in his own book.
The plot is fast and there’s a lot of action as usual, but for once there’s much more material damage than victims (on the other side, the fourth volume was about a huge epidemic, it difficult to do worse lol). We can feel once again the author’s knowledge on the topics encountered, and I think she knows how to give information without losing the reader being too technical.
On the negative side, apart from the heroine regularly flogging herself almost till the end for her decision after her brother’s kidnapping, what I found strange was that in the middle of the action, when the couple is besieged by the terrorists, they decide to act according to their hormones and their desire. Okay it’s a romance, but I found this first sex scene happened like a fly in the soup, even as well written as it is.
However, it’s an excellent volume ending the investigation in a n enjoyable way, and I had a very good reading time with almost all the volumes. Good job.

Hell & Back is the fifth and final book in Julie Rowe’s Outbreak Task Force series. There is so much that happens in the previous books that feed into this one, I don’t see how you can really enjoy this one without having read the others. All of the previous characters are mentioned in Hell & Back which makes it that much more enjoyable to read. Considering where we are as a world due to the coronavirus, this book is more timely than I am sure the author could have ever imagined.
As with the previous books, Hell & Back focuses on two individuals who are members of the Outbreak Task Force which is part of the Centers for Disease Control. Henry Lee is a Senior Lab Tech who has played a pivotal role in trying to stop the terrorist group known as the FAFO from releasing different biological agents to kill Americans. Ruby Toth is also a lab tech who has been working alongside him but she has her own agenda that no one inside the CDC is aware of. Henry is also her mentor and secret crush. New and direct attacks on the CDC and its Task Force put Ruby and Henry in closer proximity than either of their hearts can handle. Of course, this leads to some very steamy action between the sheets and creates some awkward moments. Needless to say, there is a lot of action and explosives between hero and heroine as well as the Task Force and the FAFO. Everything happens really fast. There is nothing held back which makes Hell & Back such a fun read.
I really enjoyed the closure provided in Hell & Back and all of the characters seem to have received a fitting farewell. There were a lot of loose ends to tie up which I believe was done very well. I really loved this series and would love to say more but I don’t want to ruin it. I will just say that I felt this fifth and final book was necessary to wrap everything up in a nice bow. Henry and Ruby worked well together. More importantly, the Outbreak Task Force series really showed every woman as an equal to the man they fell in love with. They all fought as a team and there was never a time where the women were treated as weaker or less empowered. Kudos to Julie for creating a very intricate and believable world within this Task Force. I look forward to reading other books by her.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, the idea of bioterrorism seems even more possible at the moment and this is an edge of your seat read about the threat of just such an event.
Ruby Toth is working in the CDC with her mentor, ex-Special Forces medic Henry Lee on the Outbreak Task Force. She's attracted to the outwardly grumpy workaholic but she's actually undercover trying to discover just who is leaking sensitive information.What a dilemma she faces when her twin brother is kidnapped by terrorists who contact her and demand she gets them viable samples of Smallpox virus or they will kill him, piece by piece. This is just the evening before she's due to visit one of the few sites with Smallpox vaccine. How did the terrorists know she'd be going there? How did they know just what is stored there? Is there anyone she can trust to help her to save her twin?
This is a contemporary action-packed, fast paced story with medical science, mercenaries, danger and daring. Ruby's family are very involved with the fight against terrorism and I was particularly intrigued by her brother, Nate, and really hope there will be a future book in this series with him as a main protagonist. If you enjoy hot, romantic suspense where the characters keeping facing further hazards, look no further, this book is for you. It is an enthralling read which I didn't put down until I'd finished it and now I can't wait to read more stories in this fantastic series.

This review is my honest opinion!
This is a fantastic heart pounding suspenseful steamy romance with a heroine who knows how to take care of herself and a hero who has ptsd and a prosthetic leg and who has to use all his knowledge from the military to fight the bad guys. They are amazing together both as a team and as a couple.
It is the conclusion of the “Outbreak task force” and I think it was great!
We find out who helps the terrorist group The FAFO both by funding them and by spying within the CDC, FBI and Homeland Security and passing on very important secret information. Because the World is still not safe even though the Measles outbreak was stopped in the former book “Search and destroy”.
A new threat is waiting below the surface and to The CDC’s irritation they don’t know what the FAFO is planning so they have to act in blindness.
Ruby is Henry Lee’s assistant and she is chosen to follow him to help him secure the protected centers where the samples of the world’s deadliest diseases are kept. I can definitely recommend this book and the “Outbreak task force” series if you love spies, great plot twists and a badass hero and heroine fighting against all odds to save the world from another deadly outbreak.
This is a fantastic heart pounding suspenseful steamy romance with a heroine who knows how to take care of herself and a hero who has ptsd and a prosthetic leg and who has to use all his knowledge from the military to fight the bad guys. They are amazing together both as a team and as a couple.
It is the conclusion of the “Outbreak task force” and I think it was great!
We find out who helps the terrorist group The FAFO both by funding them and by spying within the CDC, FBI and Homeland Security and passing on very important secret information. Because the World is still not safe even though the Measles outbreak was stopped in the former book “Search and destroy”.
A new threat is waiting below the surface and to The CDC’s irritation they don’t know what the FAFO is planning so they have to act in blindness.
Ruby is Henry Lee’s assistant and she is chosen to follow him to help him secure the protected centers where the samples of the world’s deadliest diseases are kept. This series hits close to home, recent events but I was super excited to get Henry's story. So glad was able to read this early. We know his grumpy former Army guy, with tons of credentials, no time for idiots temper. Many said he was tough to work with but he's a one of the good guys, he cares that's why he's growly. He just had no time for all the crap that comes with his job. Ruby is his balance, calm, dependable, smart and knows how to handle his temper.
I love the CDC Outbreak Task Force series if only it really existed. Ruby and Henry are caught in a lab with deadly pathogens with mercenaries trying to break in. to steal samples. The simmering tension between them ramps up as they work together well to try and stop them. It was a touchy situation. Many underestimate Henry cause of his prosthetic but I wouldn't count him out. He's smart and cunning, clear headed in tough situations, has a sexy side to all that to boot.
This was thrill ride from start to end. Action packed and many twists. It went by too fast. I can only hope there's more of this kind of books cause this was fun. Betrayal, secrets, conspiracy and all that good juicy stuff. I like Ruby and Henry they built up in a short time, romance was fast, but the dangerous and crazy situation they were in moved things up. If you followed this series, all the previous characters have a role in this. The ending seemingly tied the series together but I really liked the characters so that was bittersweet.

Boy Henry Lee turned out to be whole lotta man... And to get the full meaning of that you need to read the book... I have always loved this series with its edge of your seat suspense, deadly infectious diseases, and sizzlin romance. Henry has been a staple in the series since the beginning always gruff and surely. We finally get to see him in a whole new light and his woman Ruby Toth born to a family of spies is a great addition to the team and perfect for Henry.
We finally get to find out who has been behind funding the domestic bio-terrorists which has been an ongoing arc throughout the series. Its been a great adrenaline ride this series.

The whole series is on the CDC's fight with a terrorist group & in this book, the terrorists seem to have the upper hand and seem to know every decision and action the CDC makes and takes.
Ruby Toth is a microbiologist whose whole family are into espionage. Both her parents work in the NSA and while Ruby and her twin brother have "other" jobs, their parents use that as a cover for them helping to gather information.
For the past few months, Ruby has with the CDC and the assistant to Henry Lee; CDC's top microbiologist. Fearing sabotage, they head off to the facility where deadly vials of viruses are stored to ensure everything is secure only for Ruby to be blackmailed with her brother's kidnapping into stealing a vial of smallpox for the terrorists. When Ruby's brother manages to escape, and the blackmail threat nullified, the terrorists immediately storm the facility where Henry & Ruby are & astonishingly manage to break thru what was supposed to be impenetrable defenses within minutes.
Henry was one of my favourite characters from the previous books; gruff all brilliant scientist. The book starts off well. Henry very much living up to his reputation of terrorizing the s*** out of his staff in not suffering idiots. Only Ruby with her calm, quiet competence seems not shake in her shoes whenever Henry barks (or growls :D). Of course, unbeknownst to each other, both are quite violently attracted to each other but never let on.
When a stressed out Ruby lets slip of her feelings for Henry, is when the story gets a bit too physical for me. Under attack by the terrorists and in a perilous situation, they have sex instead?! Henry morphs into this bad-ass fighter, bristling with weapons & the persona from the previous books disappeared, much to my dismay.
It almost felt like too much action at times, & I mourned the loss of the Henry from the previous books.

This series has meant so much to me, and I have loved it so much, that I was so excited to read this final installment. Even in these crazy pandemic times, nothing could stop me from reading about this awesome task force, hot on the trail of a terrorist group trying to get their hands on a biological weapon!!
Ex-Special Forces medic Henry Lee, now part of the Outbreak Task Force at the CDC, is a bit of a workaholic. He lost his leg during his last deployment, but he doesn't let it slow him down. People might call him grumpy, or a taskmaster, but it doesn't bother him. He would rather work alone anyway. Until he gets assigned to mentor a new hire, a microbiologist joining their team. He can't believe how well they work together, and that his bear-like moods don't seem to affect her at all. He finds himself thinking of her all the time, and fighting his feelings toward her, especially since they work so closely together.
Ruby Toth is a microbiologist, and she loves the puzzle of investigating pathogens. But, she really came to the CDC to help find a traitor. Her parents both work for the NSA and wanted her help investigating info leaks that have led to terrorist attacks over the course of the series. She works directly with Henry, and spends most days trying to ignore her body's reactions to him. Ruby lives with her twin brother Nate, who is a rocket scientist, and a bit of an absent-minded professor type. When he is kidnapped and she is tasked by the kidnappers with stealing a pathogen from the lab, she doesn't know what to do. Should she risk stealing the virus? Will they just kill her brother, and her, anyway? How can she put so many other lives at risk? Can she trust Henry, or will she just be putting him in danger if she spills the truth? What's a girl to do??
Henry and Ruby had chemistry that jumped off the page, and I loved seeing our grumpy Henry, who has been a side character throughout the series, on the bumpy road to getting his HEA!! They both had trust issues, for varying reasons, but they both really wanted to trust each other. I loved watching them both struggle with the idea of actually taking the risk and being together.
Most of the side characters here were from the earlier books in the series and I loved seeing them again. It was especially nice to catch up with them, knowing that this was the final book, and our last chance to see a bit more of their HEAs. Often they provided comic relief, in addition to being awesome co-workers and friends, who always have each other's backs.
The suspense plot here was a bit of a continuation of the overarching plot of the series, the terrorist group FAFO is still trying to get their hands on biological weapons, and always seem one step ahead of our teams. How are they getting their inside info? Who is bankrolling them, and why? The team gets to the bottom of everything, with plenty of excitement in between!
Henry wasn't sure if he could ever really be close to anyone again, with all of his lingering issues from his time in the military. Ruby didn't know if Henry would ever be able to trust her enough to let her to get close. They both just LONGED for each other so much, and I was here for it. I really enjoyed this couple, and this entire team of awesome characters! I highly recommend this series (especially book 1, which is still my fave!) to any other fellow romantic suspense lovers! Every book has been so exciting, fast-paced, and enjoyable!

Though it's a teensy bit disconcerting reading an Outbreak Task Force book during a legitimate global pandemic (Wait...*that's* not the head of the CDC right now! Hang on, since when do I actually *know* the head of the CDC? What have I become???), this was still a whole lot of fun, once I managed to get my news-of-the-day saturated brain to be quiet and let me read. Henry and Ruby are wonderful characters, and work really well together both while actually working and while doing...other things. Their relationship moved quickly (love how this one ended!) but the fact that they'd been working together for a bit before the story begins makes the timeline feel more doable than is often the case in romantic suspense.
As for the story timeline, though--OMG, it moved at breakneck speed! The chapters were labeled not just with the date, but the time of day, helping to underscore both the urgency of their mission and the speed at which everything was moving. Truly, reading this is a case of sit down, open book, and hang on for your life...
This is the fifth book in the series, but would probably work okay as a standalone as well (confession time--I've only read this one and the first in the series-- Viable Threat --so far, and I had no problem following what happened here. I absolutely plan on reading the rest, since I really did enjoy the two I have read, justt maybe once everything IRL has calmed down a bit? Or maybe not...patience isn't my strong suit ;) ). Two major antagonists are unveiled by the book's end, which probably means this is where Ms Rowe leaves us with this series, though not all of the terrorist group has been captured, so maybe not...
Either way, whatever she comes up with next? I. Am. Here. For. It. :)

Hell & Back…just wow. Guys, you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for Henry’s story. I picked up my first book by Julie Rowe back in February – Viable Threat, the first in the Outbreak Task Force series and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Since diving into Viable Threat I’ve wanted Henry’s story. He’s grumpy, grouchy, and all kinds of sexy. Not to mention wicked smart and the perfect amount of Alpha male while also appreciating a strong woman.
Yes, I am drooling.
I literally died when I was able to get my hands on this ARC in exchange for an honest review. And let me just say Henry and Ruby did not disappoint. Neither did Ms. Rowe with her story arc! This is the last book in her Outbreak Task Force (so sad about that) and I was wondering how Ms. Rowe was going to tie everything together! Brilliant. As always, Hell & Back was a twisting, turning adventure of edge-of-your-seat action that makes you worry for Henry and Ruby even though you know they’ll make it in the end.
Henry is a veteran with a lot of battle wounds – and I don’t just mean his lost leg. Losing his battle, as he refers them in the book, did a doozy on him, leaving him gruff and grumpy to keep people at arm's length. Bring in Ruby, adorable, sweet, will claw-your-face-if-you-piss-her-off, Ruby. She’s, of course, Henry’s kryptonite and vice versa, the two working for months prior to the books start, making the bubbling tension spill over to a boil when they’re trapped, surrounded, and near death. It makes them falling for each other more believable, but even if they had just met, their lust to love story is still one I’d swoon over.
They are the yin to each other's yang. Perfect for each other and the ending was the happily-ever-after I wanted for not just them, but all the characters. I’m so sad to see them go, but glad to know they all ended up happy in their own ways.
Now, to reread all of them so I can live in their world just a little bit longer!

After reading the last book, i was eager to see what the members of the Outbreak Task Force were going to be dealing with in this installment. Also, Henry intrigued me with his loner, no nonsense attitude and multifaceted personality. He was a scientist, a military man and he just became a sort of mentor to Ruby. I was definitely intrigued!
I didn’t know a lot about Ruby coming in, but as the story progressed I enjoyed her attitude, her directness and the way she handled herself against Henry and the situation they were faced with. I immediately picked up on their chemistry and how they balanced each other in different aspects, so it was extremely satisfying to see them come together.
As for the plot, Julie Rowe did an amazing job in keeping me on my toes throughout the story. After reading the books in the series back to back, I was eager to see were the story was going and how the author was going to keep all the elements together without it feeling disjointed. Thankfully, all the events that took place worked together seamlessly. The romance developed throughout with plenty of banter and candid moments that showcased Henry and Ruby’s connection, the chemistry jumped off the page when they found time to explore it and the plot ran smoothly with twists and turns here and there to keep me reading until the end.
This time around there wasn’t a lot of investigating that made it to the page, but there were plenty of suspenseful scenes and tying of loose ends. I thought that the resolution to the “who” and “why” that had been a permanent entity since the first book needed to be “shown” more on the page, but ultimately I got the answers I was looking for and a hot little romance to make this book worthwhile.

I have to say that Henry Lee has nothing on the SEALs when it comes to his the traps that he surprises the mercenaries with. There's a conclusion of the FAFO Bio Terrorist story line that's the wild ride to the finish line. It will take everyone including Smoke, River, and DS to find Henry and Ruby before it's too late.

Probably reading about a potential terror-driven pandemic during the COVID-19 pandemic wasn't the smartest move I ever made but I love this series. It calls to my nerdy, medical history loving, romance junkie self!
OMG Henry is a gorgeous, grumpy grouch of a man. He can't abide wasters and layabouts and could easily do without interacting with 95% of the people he has to! But Ruby seems to have gone under his defences, like a sweet natures, open and viciously honest ninja. He may be smarter than the average veteran soldier but don't let that fool you, he still knows what way round a firearm goes, even though it may have been a hot minute since he was in uniform.
Ruby comes from a family of NSA spies and analysts, her brother is a rocket scientist (no really!) and she isn't a slouch in the academic arena either. She possesses the ability to get people to work together, which she has found an increasing need for when trying to get Henry to play nice with others! Henry and Ruby have been circling each other for months, verbal sparring seems to be their version of flirting, LOL. So even though the whole romance may seem to be "insta-love" they have actually liked each other for some time, just didn't have the impetus to destabilize their status quo. I loved learning about Ruby's family and Henry's backstory. DS again makes a major appearance and I dearly love that crotchety old so-and-so.
I am at a loss now that this series has ended but I'm hoping that Ruby's brother and his "rocket scientist spy" persona may appear in a new series, pretty please?!?!?!
OMG Henry is a gorgeous, grumpy grouch of a man. He can't abide wasters and layabouts and could easily do without interacting with 95% of the people he has to! But Ruby seems to have gone under his defences, like a sweet natures, open and viciously honest ninja. He may be smarter than the average veteran soldier but don't let that fool you, he still knows what way round a firearm goes, even though it may have been a hot minute since he was in uniform.
Ruby comes from a family of NSA spies and analysts, her brother is a rocket scientist (no really!) and she isn't a slouch in the academic arena either. She possesses the ability to get people to work together, which she has found an increasing need for when trying to get Henry to play nice with others! WOW!!!! The action was intense in this book. The author really did a great job with the reality of what a man made pandemic could do, and the steps out CDC has taken to keep the world safe.
Ruby is attempting to gather information from the CDC for her parents, whom are investigating the recent biological pandemic out breaks. Ruby's parents work for the NSA and have been gathering Intel on the recent polio outbreaks. Ruby is a high level microbiologist who wants to keep the public safe, while still keeping her eyes and ears open to any evidence of someone stealing/selling bio -hazards. Ruby is forced / to attempt to steal a vial of Smallpox from the CDC storehouse to save her brother from being killed by mercenaries.
Henry designed the major CDC storehouse / lab from being penetrated by mercenaries intent on using biological warfare to gain power/riches. Henry is ex- special forces, who lost his leg to an IED in Afghanistan years ago. His friends and are tasked with keeping all the most dangerous virus out of the hands of evil. Only a handful of people know what the DEC building is made of, the security protocols and where the most deadly virus are housed.
What no one anticipated was that both Ruby, and Henry were willing to do to keep themselves and the world safe from a major pandemic.
I don't want to give testify away.. If you like the action of Suzanne Brockmann then this is a must read. I will be buying the first five books in the series this weekend.
P.S. this story resonated with me...I was vaccinated for small pic but my son wasn't. We need to keep the masses vaccinated against all virus that could pose a threat to society...Even if we believe that it has been eradicated.

This is the stunning conclusion to this series that is oh so relevant at the moment even if it was started before these crazy times we live in You have to wonder at the timing is Julie a Seer in another life
In this final stunning conclusion the battle against FAFO (Free America From Oppression)is heating up and the final protagonist will be Henry Lee we have met him in all of the previous book The ex special forces soldier who lost a leg and retrained as a virologist and who is the one that makes sure everything at the CDC runs smooth and that the workers get the answers they need. He is working with intern Ruby Toth and she is the first one who hasn't been driven away by his snarly manners in fact they work well together. It hasn't taken a genius to realise that the next thing that FAFO will go after is an even more deadly virus and they suspect it will be smallpox So Ruby and Henry head to the holding facility where the virus is held Henry has long suspected that this facility will be targeted and has increased security there So why when it is attacked do the attackers know all the code to get in and all the security measures taken The answers is that they have inside help could that help actually be Ruby because her brother has been taken by FIFO and if she doesn't get them the small pox they will kill him. This time though FIFO has miscalculated because her brother isn't the bumbling person he portrays and Henry is far more deadly then they expect and as he develops feelings for Ruby he will do whatever he needs to with the help of the Outbreak Task Force team to keep her safe. and finally the traitor will be revealed and he is much closer than they all realise.

The pair have been assigned to go to every biosafety lab to ensure that all of the bugs and viruses are still there and haven't been compromised.
The bad guys Free America From Oppression kidnap her brother Nate and will kill him if they don't get a sample of smallpox in 24 hours. This is when the real mission begins!
I have to say considering everything that's going on in the world right now I was excited and reluctant to read about diseases. I loved this book Ruby was the right amount of strong willed and vulnerable, she was likeable and relatable in her thought process.
Henry was in grumpy alpha mode from the beginning and became protective after people try to run Ruby off the road. He is on her side and wants to help because as he said in thea beginning, she's his.
This book takes place over 6 days and due to that the love story for some could feel a little quick. For me it was alright because we'd established that they'd been working together for two months, had that longing going on and had been wanting to act on it for a while.

Hell & Back is book number five in this author’s Outbreak Task Force series. The books are marketed as standalone titles. I’m a romantic suspense junkie and always on the hunt for new-to-me authors that I can add to my list of authors I enjoy, so I thought I’d give Hell & Back a try.
What I Liked Most About the Book: The fast pace of the action. If you’re looking for not a lot of backstory or slow build-up and heart-pounding action from the get-go, this book is going to be right up your alley. The mystery literally begins on the first page.
NICUnurse’s Rating: The books in this series are marketed as standalone titles, but there were many times throughout the story where I felt I was really missing out on a small but valuable piece of information. With that said, what I felt I was missing wasn’t so much that I couldn’t keep up with the story or the characters, so I wouldn’t say this book wasn’t worth the time I spent in it. The writing was good, the suspense kept me turning the pages, and I was surprised by the whodunnit at the end. For me, those are all the elements I look for in a satisfying romantic suspense read. Not everyone can write good suspense, but Julie Rowe certainly did with Hell & Back, and she did it well enough that I want to check out more of her books. I’m a series junkie, so at some point, I’ll most likely start with book one and read the entire Outbreak Task Force series for a better experience with this book. Bottom line: I’d start with book one.

This is an amazing action-packed military thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
Henry Lei is an ex-Special Forces medic who lost his leg in a tragic accident. He is a member of the Outbreak Task Force. Ruby Toth is also on the Outbreak Task Force and is Henry’s mentee.
Ruby and Henry are assigned to work as a team. They must visit all of the buildings that are holding the CDC’s deadly virus samples. They need to make sure that all of the samples are accounted for and are securely locked down.
Unfortunately, the day before they leave for their mission, Ruby’s brother is kidnapped. The kidnapper will not release him until Ruby steals a sample of smallpox. She must give it to them within 24 hours. Ruby chooses not to tell Henry, because she doesn’t want him to get in trouble or get hurt.
However, the terrorists surprise Ruby and Henry when they follow them, and break into this “secured” fortress where the samples are kept. They plan to steal the samples and then kill both Ruby and Henry.
At this point, the book becomes a page-turner with non-stop action. Ruby and Henry fight to keep the smallpox sample out of the hands of the terrorists. They also literally fight for their lives. Not only is this exciting, but it is actually scary at some parts.

Julie Rowe’s Hell & Back is an action-filled dose of escapism, with a plot line that feels all too real during an actual pandemic.
Ex-Special Forces medic Henry Lee partners with microbiologist Ruby Toth to aid the CDC in cataloguing and securing the world’s most deadly diseases. When Ruby’s twin brother is kidnapped, she’s faced with a horrible choice: steal a vial of Smallpox or watch her brother die. Can she trust the inscrutable Henry with her secret?
This is the first time I’ve read a novel by Rowe, and it was definitely a “read in one sitting” type of book. The action is pretty fast-paced and doesn’t really let up until the end. There’s not a lot of depth to these characters, which is kind of a shame, because I think that exploring Henry’s injury and his trauma would have made the plot more layered and substantive. Peripherally addressing it felt like a missed opportunity. Also, you do have to employ a healthy amount of “suspend disbelief” to buy into certain plot points, and you do have to overlook the caricaturization of the majority of the villains in the story. That being said, if you’re already into this style of storytelling, you’re going to enjoy this book.

Let's start with the basic:
The novel goes about a woman that works in a US lab (sorry if my terminology is not correct). But apart from being there because...it's her job, and she likes it. She has been sent by her parents to investigate and find moles that are involved in a "biological war". Here comes the interesting thing: the guy who is leading her, her mentor it's too hot not to notice, so you know what comes after this:
- Fight scenes
- Secrets
- Romance
What more would you wish for?
Personally, I'm a sucker for fight scenes and immersing myself in the movements that the characters are involved into.
The writing was in a 3rd person, but it was really well blended. The scenes were never overlapped and I got to see and understand their minds.
What I didn't like:
The secret that was meant to unravel was done pretty quickly and was brushed to a side, without giving a proper explanation.
The other aspect that hit me was that the end was too......" And they live happily ever after". Clearly, this is a personal opinion. The epilogue was pretty quickly and, as I said, the ending was too "bright".
Obviously, this is all my opinion.
Nevertheless, I recommend reading and feeling all the sparks that you find throughout this book.

Fast-paced, action romance that leaves you on the edge of your seat!
Ruby Toth is used to stress, hell, her parents work for the NSA. However, her new role undercover at the CDC is testing her limits. Not only is the CDC under attack from international terrorists, but her brother is taken hostage and the only way he'll be released is if she hands over a vial of Smallpox. As if that weren't bad enough, she's been assigned to work closely with her mentor, a broody, sexy veteran named Henry. But when their assignment comes under attack, the only way they'll be saved is if they work together; they just need to trust each other first.
The action scenes in this book had me up all night reading. I felt like I was there watching it. Rowe's detailed writing allows readers to fully escape into the action and suspense of the text. The locations, technology, politics were all well-researched and easy to follow while reading.
My one wish was the romance to be a bit more of a slow burn once it starts. The build up was set nicely, but then, it got intense quickly - which was in line with the character's natures, but left me wanting more.

Hell and Back is a fantastic read. I would recommend reading the Outbreak Task Force in order so you get the full picture of what is going on and because it is a fantastic series. Hold onto your seats and enjoy the ride. This is Henry's book and you will just love him so much. If you've read these books then you know that what makes up the Task Force is a member of the CDC and an ex military person. Henry is an ex special forces medic and Ruby is a member of the CDC. Protection is the key and Ruby is under Henry's. They working hard together to find who is behind the attacks on the CDC. I love the chemistry between Henry and Ruby. There is such a spark and such a bond between them. Ruby can hold her own when it comes down to a fight and I just love how protective Henry is of her. You get all your favorite couples from the series in this one as they get closer to solving who is funding the terrorist. I really couldn't put this one down and was sucked right in from the very start. I really love this book and series. Go one click this one.
