Kakemono: Cinque secoli di pittura giapponese. La Collezione Perino

Rate this book
A comprehensive survey of kakemono, the classical Japanese art of the wall scroll Spanning Japanese painting from the 16th to the 19th centuries, this thrilling volume presents a selection of 120 kakemonos from the Perino collection in Italy.

The kakemono (literally “hanging thing”) is a Japanese painting or calligraphy, on silk, cotton or paper, contained as a scroll and intended to be hung on the wall.

Unlike a hemakimono―a roll that is opened horizontally on a surface―the kakemono opens vertically and is designed as an indoor wall decoration. Being connected to anniversaries, specific periods of the year or special occasions, it is displayed only temporarily and then placed, carefully rolled up, in a special box.

The subjects are mainly taken from nature (flowers, birds, fish) and show a naturalism and a tremendous accuracy of detail. Works of rare beauty by artists such as Maruyama Okyo, Kishi Ganku and Kusumi Morikage are included here.

"Kakemono: Five Centuries of Japanese Painting: The Perino Collection" is an album of the classical Japanese art of the hanging wall scroll. The book presents a meticulously curated selection of 100+ kakemonos from the private Perino collection in Italy.
The "hanging scroll" as explained in the book "is the equivalent of the Western painting. <...> Unlike our canvases or panels, rigid structures built to be hung on a wall for en extended period of time, the painted scrolls are designed for use over limited time and have a relatively soft structure."
Now this is the interesting part - these paintings can be hung for a special day, an entire season or just for a few hours to be admired by a small circle. The reason it was interesting for me is because it made me to slow down contrary to the expectation just to browse through the album scanning the paintings quickly. Slowing down happened due to small clues that are present in each painting which encourages to train the eye and look for them (learned about them by explanations next to kakemonos) in the paintings to guess which season they represent or spot intricate details missed at first glance. Overall, that was a really enjoyable experience.
If someone if thinking about buying the album, the quality really adheres to high production standards: it is printed on thick white matte paper with high-quality, all-color typography and imagery.
