Adventure awaits and Mup is ready for it. But with one bad wish, a creeping disaster unfolds and Mup finds herself in the future, face-to-face with the one person she never wanted to her teenage self! Can the two girls work together to uncover the secret to the planet’s survival before it’s too late? "A rollicking adventure that explores the themes of environmental stewardship and rejuvenation - all layered on top of a poignant tale of the inner struggle for identity caused by growing up. A must read for graphic novel lovers of all ages." - Jennifer Overaa, Librarian, San Anselmo Public Library
This graphic novel is such an amazing story and artwork I would recommend it to all kids looking for a gripping, page-turning, heart warming adventure! Protagonist Mup is a brave little girl with big plans... to find a dinosaur. Mup gets trapped in the future and meets someone she despises... her future teenage self, Ariana. Some things seem very wrong to little Mup: Ariana acts like she wants to fit in, something Mup would never try to do... and the world is dying of the Black Dread. Little Mup goes on an adventure with her dad and future self to stop the Black Dread, which is killing all plant life. I think any kid elementary school age would love to read this story, it is inspiring and very fun! Mup is a relatable character and the story really shows that change is not bad as long as you are yourself. Even as an 8th grader I could not stop reading through Mup's adventure, you will not be able to put it down!
MUP is by far the best book that I own. The artwork is truly remarkable- you can tell that Raea Gragg put so much time into all the little details of this book. Not only that, but the story grasps your attention as soon as you start reading. The plot is something that most of us can relate to when dealing with the thought of growing up, trying to fit in, yet trying to stay true to yourself. (Not to mention the fact that we need to take care of our planet, which is an integral part of this story.) I’m not too much of a reader myself, but between the artwork and the storyline I found myself unable to put it down.
MUP is the perfect graphic novel for everyone looking for a thrilling, fast-paced, action packed book with plenty of original artwork.
the story starts with Mup as an elementary student but she slips through a magical portal and finds herself face-to-face with herself as a teenager. Adventures ensue, but the underlying thread is all about loving yourself and all of the different manifestations of yourself at different ages. Oh, and a bunch about the environment too. I was a little confused about "The Black Dread" (gooey black stuff that kills all of the plants on the planet) and wasn't convinced that the evil businessman needed to be there looking like a wicked wizard, but the message came across. Also, Mup is being raised by a single dad and no explanation about mom is ever given and it's no big deal. interesting.
Mup’s beautiful illustration is only part of what makes it an engaging, fun read. The book explores personal growth, family dynamics, and battles of expectations we have for ourselves as we age. It’s an extremely creative story with characters that are incredibly interesting, and the protagonist’s strength and observation of her own growth and change in her life is just absolutely worth the ready.
This is a fantastic graphic novel for all ages! Not only is the central story an incredible adventure that keeps you turning the pages, but the themes surrounding childhood, family, and the environment are all handled effectively by the author. I highly recommend this to EVERYONE, and can’t wait for more projects in the future from this talented young storyteller!
Jubilant adventure following two girls on their quest to save the world from a global pandemic. The main message of the graphic novel is to learn to accept and love yourself the way you are. At the same time, it introduces kids to themes like environmental conservation and pandemics without feeling preachy or morbid. I love the historic nod to the evil Belgium King Leopold II as well as the African legend of Mkele-mbemebe. I was cheering for the fun characters from the first page to the last and got lost in dramatic and colorful images. I cannot wait for Mup's next adventure!
