Based on more than two decades of research conducted on five continents, this monumental work focuses on the activities of members of the Society of Jesus from its foundation to the eve of its expulsion from the Portuguese world. A second volume will examine the Order's expulsion, the fate of its members, and the disposition of its assets in Portugal and her empire from 1750 to 1808.
A masterpiece of scholarly work. Alden is a marvellous historian that is able to write about a supposedly boring topic and still make it an exciting read. Well written and accessible. All the events are put into a broader historical context. This is one of the reasons why its so tremendously extensive.
He quite often mentions part 2 of his project which covers the period after the restauration of the Jesuits. Apparently it was never finished.
