so i'm currently back in my manga mood and i was looking for something to read, noticed this has been on my tbr shelf for a while and i finally picked it up and ended up binging all the current chapters released in one sitting (but i can feel the regret starting to sink in bc i have to wait for future chapters to be released). the story isn't anything "new" or "groundbreaking", but the characters are lovable and i admit the fluff got to me.
if you like childhood friends to lovers, slow burn with yearning, opposites attract (quiet, reserved character having a secret crush on his goofy and loud but oblivious bestie) AND CUTE MOMENTS, go pick this up rn (and suffer with me pls). the way i actually felt giddy over these two and the way this volume ended... I NEED MORE. 😭😭
p.s. if anyone has any cute, wholesome mm manga recs, pls lmk! <3
I’m dying of frustration reading this series! So slow burn. Thank goodness I love these two, because we spend about 90% of the book in their heads. The school trip takes up the bulk of this volume and poor Kakeru is a nervous wreck. It’s actually uncomfortable to read. I raised it a star because something FINALLY happened at the end of this volume.
This series kills me; it's very slow-burn for what I'm used to in a BL manga, but I just love it so much. Something finally happened, and I can't wait to see how it's dealt with in the next volume!
YES FINALLY FINALLYYYY!!! I loved the ending so much actually. Yamato finally made a move by kissing Kakeru and then finally confessed to him. It was actually adorable! Sadly it ends before we get Kakeru's full reaction though I bet we'll get it in volume 4. I have a new found hate for Fujino, he wasn't too bad until this book he just kept pestering about girlfriends and shit it was just super annoying. But I love the new character Hosaka oml he's definitely my favorite side character hands down. I can't wait to see where these boys will go in the next volumes!!!

The pacing felt a little off at times - choppy bits of transitional dialogue, and extra comics that interrupted the main storyline at dramatic points and in ways that didn't quite seem canonical? I enjoy that type of content, but they fit better as extras at the end if they're really just side jokes. (Like Kakeru looking for Yamato in the bath when as far as we see, they don't actually bathe together during the trip, since the whole idea makes Kakeru inexplicably anxious.)
I was kind of expecting the surprise friendship between Yamato's sister and coworker to go somewhere, too...what's the whole deal with his sister's crush on Kakeru anyway? Is she planning to actually confess? The timing has definitely passed on that one now, so I'm not sure why the plot point even came up.
Most of this volume takes place during Kakeru's and Yamato's 3 day school trip to Kyoto. I did ultimately enjoy it a lot, but it definitely gets stronger near the end. Some of the other bits felt sort of like filler or were a little awkwardly drawn out...like Kakeru plopping on top of Yamato in his futon while the teacher's doing bed checks. A decent idea, but it felt like it got kind of unwieldy on the page, and needed something else to balance it.
The ending was great, though - I ugly-cried through basically everything after Fujino pulled his big surprise. And I was NOT expecting to get a new favorite character out of this - usually I'm annoyed by the sudden introduction of New People several volumes in, but right now I'm kinda hoping for a Hosaka/Amamiya spinoff? Hosaka is...weirdly cool. He's blunt and not diplomatic at all but is actually super intuitive and great at giving advice. If Yamato would let him, they could be pretty decent friends, I think...and he and Amamiya were so unsurprised and so supportive when they figured out what was really going on with Yamato's feelings towards Kakeru.
Honestly, with how dense and avoidant and frustrating Kakeru was being throughout this volume, I was almost (gasp) starting to root for possibly-also-gay-Hosaka to heal Yamato's heartache instead, but he and Amamiya have an interesting dynamic I'd like to see more of.
And Kakeru is, possibly, starting to pick up the slack in his relationship with Yamato. I liked the little glimpses of Yamato's past (is his dad still around?) and Kakeru finally cluing in on what he's known all along - that Yamato is really, really good at hiding his feelings and what he truly wants, and part of their friendship involves Kakeru being good at pulling that out of him.
He did a good job of that with correctly identifying Yamato's desire to go on a side trip during their Kyoto free day, but he spent so much frustrating time talking himself out of thinking Yamato really wanted to spend time with them. Hopefully now that Yamato has actually confessed - although a bit more physically than I was expecting - maybe they'll make some actual progress and Kakeru can stop being such an intentionally oblivious idiot.
April 2022. BL manga volume 3 about two lifelong friends who are individually realizing their crushes on one another and navigating their feelings and if they should confess or not. The premise isn’t unique but the execution is incredibly sweet and charming, and quite funny at moments. Really adore this series. Got volume 3 from Sac library, and pre-ordered volume 4 which comes out in the next couple months 😊
Extremely kawaii 😊 The plot is amazing, not too boring or slow, the drawing style is simple but harmonious. But why Yamato's so lonely TT I thought he rejected the present Kakeru gave him. I wAs wROnG, can't spoil more but it's freaking GOOD 😭 Finally confessed him and fainted... It'll be more better if I can read the original without translate
