DNF. I hate to give a 1 star review, but it only happens if I can't finish a book. My dad always said not to give up on a book until you've finished at least 25% of it, because if you still aren't into it, you probably never will be. I managed to make it to 24%, page 91. Didn't finish that chapter before giving up.

If you read this before you read the book, here's the best tip I can give you - skip the first chapter entirely. I was bored to tears with the sweet 16 party talk. One-percenters spending 6 figures on a teen party? Barf. (Cost wasn't mentioned, but if you fly in a party planner from New York, you know it's expensive).

This book was very... talk-y? I don't know if that's the right word. For example, "the exasperation in Reyna's voice was clear in the last statement." Why are you telling me that, rather than having Reyna's actions speak for her?

You need a new editor to clean up the grammar and misspellings and general errors. Punctuation marks where they don't belong, names not correct, etc. Thoughts should be in italic font, not quotations, because that is confusing. If we have Dana's POV while she's in Chicago, it shouldn't move to Anthony or Reyna's POV in Arizona unless it's a new chapter or section. This happened frequently, and was very frustrating. Names mixed up (in the beginning, Anthony mentions trouble in his marriage with Esperanza, but he's married to Reyna).

Books should be enjoyable, not frustrating. There are also absolutely no likable characters.

This is absolutely my genre, and maybe the book gets better, but in the first 24%, I wanted to give up on every page.

Good story but editing was horrendous. Repeatedly used spool every single instance when he meant pool. There was a character named Frank and used Frankly a couple of times.

The minutiae of details describing some scenes was over the top, like he was trying to meet a minimum word count essay. Parking his car, getting out his briefcase and entering his home went on for an entire paragraph. Opening his exercise app on his apple watch and how he did it, was painfully explained. Many instances of detailed descriptions that in no way furthered the story.

Decent story but will not waste my time reading this author again.

Too many characters in just the first chapter

I read only the first chapter because I was so confused. There must have been twenty characters and I had no idea which might be important. But the most confusing part was the celebration of a sixteenth birthday for a well-to-do Latina girl. I may not be steeped in that culture but I would have expected this celebration as the quinceanera for her fifteen birthday.

I’ve recently gotten back into reading, and May It Please the Court caught my attention as a free recommendation on Kobo. I also saw it recommended on TikTok as a good starter book for anyone who enjoys mystery and compelling stories, and I’d have to agree.

The book pulled me in right away. The pacing was steady, and I found myself wanting to keep reading to see how things would unfold. The blend of legal drama, family tensions, and relationship dynamics made for a well-rounded and enjoyable story. It’s a book that’s easy to get into and stick with, which is exactly what I was looking for.

That said, like some other reviewers have mentioned, there were parts of the book that felt like unnecessary filler. For example, there was a section explaining why Gerry understood more about Japanese culture than Daniel, which didn’t feel especially important to the storyline. There were also overly detailed descriptions of the food served at various parties that didn’t seem to add much. These moments slowed the pace a bit and felt like they were there just to fill space.

Overall, though, May It Please the Court is a solid, entertaining read. I’d recommend it to anyone easing back into reading or looking for something light but engaging to pass the time. It’s not overly complex, but it tells a good story and keeps your attention. A great pick for mystery lovers or fans of legal and family drama.

More than just a legal thriller, the author takes readers into the lives of the Clifton family. A fall during a sweet sixteen ceremony has the family fighting against the business. But, worse is coming. Has there been a murder, Daniel Mendoza is bound and determined to find out the truth. I have read other books by this author and am always glad I grabbed the tales.

What a Ride this story took me on! I loved all the characters and how deep the author went into their lives. It made me love and dislike them at the same time. On a personal note I always wanted closer friends from HS or college but after listening to this I think I might pass. That’s too much for me.

I enjoyed watching the legal team work. How they played the witness’s to say their story then pulled the truth out them later after they had committed. Ha Ha Ha the evil me loves that! I liked Daniel and his crew. That PI?!? Man I would not want to get on her wrong side.

I listened to this on audio. The narration is good and easy to listen to. This is the first story I have listened to by this author. The story is fast paced and easily kept my interest! There is a lot going on with the wonderfully built characters.

I’d really like to give this book 3.5 stars, but… I enjoyed the story, I enjoyed an older protagonist, I enjoyed a lot of the characters, I would have enjoyed the book 5 stars worth if Mr. Maldonado had hired a copy editor. He used his own name twice—a place holder? deliberate? beats the heck outa me—but it threw me out of the story. The forgotten words, the tense shifts, the extraneous words, all minor, but detracted, sometimes enough to throw me out of the story. Sometimes I’d have to go back a couple pages to see if I’d missed something.

I did have to finish reading it, just to see if I was right in my choice of antagonist. I wasn’t. There were a couple areas I’d have appreciated a bit more information, such as the confession of the killer. It seemed a bit too pat. Was it a spontaneous admission? Did s/he trip over their lies? We just were informed s/he had confessed. I also would have liked a bit more reaction from the family during the arrest.

Will I read another of the series? Yes, all writers have learning curves, and I found the actual story fun, though a bit wordy. “Well, Bob, let me tell you how to do a data dump.”

I read fiction to escape my reality, and when I read a Who Done It? I seldom try to figure it out, I really do want to be surprised at the end. I was. I did think one of the main characters was a tad unbelievable, especially at the end of the book. I did enjoy sitting in on the deposition. I’ve only heard about them, and seen them on tv/movies, so that was interesting. It’s always fun to see how the law works or doesn’t work. And how could he not have seen how one of the witnesses would end up? Even I could see that one from 8 miles away, at night, with no moon or stars! I would have liked a bit more court time.

John Grisham...move towards retirement. New legal author emerges.

(This is book 2 in a series, but works easily as a stand alone. A few characters carry over, but no "thru" plot line.)

I liked the book and will read more from this author. Here's why:

Author, Daniel Maldonado, shares with us his debut novel in the thriller/mystery genre. Rich in diverse characters, the "crime" does not happen until over 1 hour into audiobook. I feel we are watching a great offer learn and perfect his craft as the story unfolds. Things I loved: 1. the personal glimpse into the practical daily work of the law 2. ,lthe authentic portrayal of middle class Hispanic/Latino culture, a story with "real" law, i.e. a slip and fall turned wrongful death, shared liability case. Things I would have changed: 1. the narrator, while he is good and slips painlessly between ethnic accents uses a pacing and pause pattern that becomes sing-songy and detracts from textual meaning, 2. "Columbo" the plot structure...in other words move the crime or central issue to the first one or two chapters. in other words have a stronger "hook" or a "better lead sentenc." 3. Minimize secondary characters. If a character is not going to play a key scene in the plot minimize them to a nameless description. 4. Consider a chronological plot line with clear date markers if you need to move back in time. For example in this book, much of the couples backgrounds in the first 1/3 could have been done in flashbacks or cast into a character reviewing the past in a conversation.

Good luck Daniel Maldonado...got to run...A Fleeing Felon awaits me!

Hadn't realised that it was an american lawyer procedural and being used to watching law and order at my mom's I thought well that'll be ok am used to that programme. This book stepped away from that a bit and it was about Reyna, the mother of two children and the eldest was having her sweet 16th birthday event (have never heard of a sweet event before) at a hotel picked by her mother's sister, her aunt, and paid for by her mother's sister. However on the night, one of her mother's old college friends who she and her husband haven't seen for a while, turns up and in the corner kisses her husband on the lips. They were an item before he married Reyna. Later Reyna is found at the foot of one of the stairways, almost dead.

Then began the very long lawyer procedural all about lightbulbs, were they on, which ones, what colour, lighting up which stairs, where are the cctv cameras, all of which was kind of passing me by, too many terms I didn't understand (I understood the lightbulbs it's all the other things, it seems much simpler over here, less long-winded). Just when Reyna is recovering from her head injury she is found now totally dead in bed having been suffocated by a pillow. Well she wasn't very liked by folks then. I liked Daniel the lawyer and I have to say I quite liked the ending which rounded it off nicely. It was all the massive bit in the middle which I wasn't too keen on.

This was an interesting take on legal thrillers. It was much more of a procedural, and focused on the details of what actually goes on in a case beyond what is seen in courtroom dramas viewed on tv. I enjoyed the story and was pleasantly surprised when I was wrong about some of my predictions. I did not see some of the twists that were revealed at the end. There were also 1 or 2 storylines left unresolved at the end of the book that feel as if they might be revisited in the next installment of this series.

The narrator of the audiobook version of this title felt very stiff and at times unsure of himself. It sounded as if this was the first time he was reading through the book. The narrator continuously paused in odd places, causing me to have to pay very close attention and piece together what he was saying. Otherwise I often didn't know when a sentence was ending and a new one was starting, resulting in the author's intended message not coming through clearly. There were a few minor grammatical errors, which I probably wouldn't have noticed if I had not needed to pay such close attention to each word of the narration.

I would be interested to read more by this author and in this series. But I sincerely hope either a different narrator is used, or the existing narrator gets a bit more practice under his belt before recording the next series installment.

I was provided a free copy of the audio version of this title by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Daniel Mendoza thriller series by Daniel Maldonado. Daniel Mendoza is a lawyer defending a lawsuit filed by the Clifton family against the Regal Phoenix Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, Arizona. Reyna Clifton is the mother of her daughter Alejandra who is found severely injured at the bottom of the staircase after her celebrating Alejandra's sweet sixteen birthday party. The family blames the resort for negligence. Daniel represents the hotel corporation and they want to settle out of court but Daniel resists. Reyna dies in the hospital room and Daniel becomes suspicious of foul play. With the help of his legal team and private investigator, Daniel sets out to uncover the truth behind Reyna's death and determine who would have wanted her dead. This well written story of treachery will keep you reading until the end. I really enjoyed this fantastic legal thriller novel.

An Absorbing Legal Thriller

This is a fascinating story with versatile and unforgettable characters, an exceptional channel of communication, and dramatic locations. The storyline begins with Alejandra Clifton who is celebrating her sweet sixteen birthday party in Scottsdale, Arizona, but the plot becomes even more of a page-turner when her father, Anthony Clifton, is seen kissing Dana Jones, his ex-lover who may have a clandestine agenda. When Daniel Mendoza, a caring, selfless, and meticulous litigator tackles a lawsuit against his client, the narrative is thrown a curve ball, filled with twists and turns, secrets and lies, scandal, envy, manipulation, betrayal, and deceit, slowly building up to an ending that will reveal earlier offenses. I am looking forward to reading Daniel Mendoza Thrillers’ Book 2.

Interesting description of the legal process and depositions. I was able to figure out the ending ahead of time so the mystery wasn't that mysterious if I could do that. That said, it was a quick read and very interesting procedural. It centers around a Sweet 16 party that actually sounds more like a quinceañera in the explanation of the tradition. I almost did four stars but I really loved the legal descriptions and processes and the writing is easy and flows well. A quick interesting read.

I'd Read it Again!

This is a PG-13 book (It's very mild on foul language and sex but the subject of infidelity runs through the story and is part of the plot). There is good character development, a likeable main character that pulls the reader into a realistic plot of detection and courtroom drama. It reminds me a bit like Law and Order type of plot.
If you like the case of the investigation and the nuances of legal questioning after a well painted picture of the crime you will enjoy Daniel as he tries to protect his client

This is a very interesting book. This is the first book written by Mr. Maldonado I have read already. And today I will start to read the second one.
It was my mistake that I didn’t read about the author, but now I understand very well why all the scenes related to legal issues were described accurately and convincingly.
The book keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and leads to a conclusion I couldn't have expected.
I recommended it to my wife and she already finished to read it with pleasure.

Good Read

I am perplexed: Why did I give this book five stars? Why did the author give readers the triple X warning? Why did I not admonish the author to get an editor?
I read the whole book looking for just one curse word! Nary one. No curtains fluttered. There was a fall down a staircase, and a murder by suffocation. Still, I was not traumatized.
I am a lawyer and reading how this case was resolved was entertaining. That's it! The book was pure entertainment! Five stars of entertainment!

Thank you, Mr. Maldonado, for a good read.

Not to be missed

A totally engrossing and awe inspiring novel when Daniel Mendoza's takes on what appears to be just another simple insurance case he could hardly have guessed how twisted and complicated it was going to turn out to be. Starting with a simple accidental fall at a swanky hotel complex and involving some underhand tactics by a close knit family to get a large payout it develops in to a full blown murder investigation for which nobody could foresee or imagine.

Audio version
This was my first by this author and narrator and I really did enjoy it. At the start I was wondering where it was going but then it got really good. Sometimes there was bit too much legalese for me but that made sense given what the book was about and the new series. Just loved the ending.

I also learnt a lot about Puerto Rican food as an aside.

I was given a free copy by the author but the review is entirely my own.

Gripping and emotional read!!

This one is definitely a slow burn with a lot of subtle hints and little details throughout, leading to the culmination of the legal battle.

The writing is incredibly detail orientated so if you prefer an easier read, this may not be the author for you. However, I thoroughly enjoyed the growth and depth in this story.

A gripping and emotional read and I look forward to future works from this author.

My first from this author and I really enjoyed it, I found the plot really well written and the characters easy to imagine which makes for a great story.
The narrator does a really good interpretation of bringing this story to life, you won’t be disappointed with this courtroom drama.
I received this audio book for free from the author and I wanted to leave an honest review.

May it please the court

This book starts off with a Hispanic teen party which lasts for several chapters. I almost quit reading, but decided to read a little further. Glad I read further because the story opened up. There is a lot of technical jargon, but a pretty good mystery behind it all.

What a great read! As good as any "lawyer" book I have ever read. Almost stopped in the first chapter when it was about the girls getting ready for the party. So glad I didn't. The story developed from there with so many turns

.There is nothing to lead you to the ending. So very well developed that you truly can not see where it is going until you are there.

A Little Rushed....

...... at the end. Story was going along at a nice pace, when all of a sudden, it jumped into overdrive.... like the author was going to run out of paper to finish it. Very odd for such a good read.

Enjoyed reading this book. Never guessed who it was until the end. Great thriller, romance, lives being changed and affected by tragedy, death, trauma, families destroyed because of wanting someone who was married to someone else. What a tragedy.

I liked it. This is a good mystery story, filled with secrets. I found the ending surprising! Daniel is an interesting character, but my favorite character was Pamela. She is awesome, mysterious, and definitely good at her job.

Excellent!

I completely enjoyed this one. I learned so much I did not know about lawyers, their responsibilities, and points of law. All that, while being engrossed in a well-written, engaging plot. I will read more from this author.
