Surviving the Break

Rate this book
Max doesn’t do repeats, and he definitely doesn’t do commitments. Months after a hot encounter with a smooth-talking stranger in a bar room bathroom, Max comes face to face with the same sexy doctor during the unveiling of the community center’s dance studio. And the man is just as pushy and perceptive as Max remembers. Because of their mutual friendships, Max now has to work overtime to keep Dr. Ashton Jackson at arm’s length. Will he succeed in resisting the undeniable attraction he feels toward the man, or will he risk putting his heart on the line for love… again?

Ash isn’t afraid of love. He’s just never met The One. But there was something about the brown-eyed stranger he hooked up with that he can’t get out of his head. When their paths cross again unexpectedly, Ashton hopes to convince the wounded man with the heart of gold to give love a second chance. But what happens when the truth behind Max's heartache threatens to leave Ash questioning everything he's ever believed about himself? Will he too be left broken? Or will he and Max survive the break?

**Book two in the Chadwick series. Can be read as a standalone, but may be better enjoyed reading in order.

3.5 stars. This was not as good as the first. I really liked Max and Ash. I felt so many things along with them. I stayed up reading late into the night. And the sex scenes set my Kindle on fire. And my underwear. And my brain. I’m still recovering from all that heat. So really, this was good. But book 1 blew me away so I had expectations.

At first I thought for sure it won’t give me the feelings the first book did. It won’t be as heartbreaking or angsty. Max’s ex was a jerk and dumped him. So what? But I was wrong. The backstory was heartbreaking and revealed so slowly and brilliantly that you can’t help but feel everything along with him. I wanted to hug Max and protect him forever.

I loved Ash. Just like in book 1, he was such a solid presence and was amazing. For most of the book.

Now the bad.
Why is everyone in this series jealous, paranoid and possessive? It made sense for Justin and Damon. I totally got it for Max. But Ash? It was so weird and out of character. And then the explanation we get? That’s how love feels? WHAT? No. Love doesn’t turn everyone into a paranoid asshole. Sniffing your partner for signs of cheating? It’s time to run, dude. Far away.

But what really killed me was the ending. The break for no reason. The unnecessary grovelling. The cheesy OTT grand gestures. It made me cringe so much.

The epilogue was perfect and saved it. So while I loved the book, the story, the characters, I am rounding down.

C.P Harris delivered another angst-filled sexy and emotional romance that brought the heat, tears and passionate love. This sequel took this series to another level because healing and happy was evident much earlier for me as I wasn’t sure we would get there in book 1.
We met both Ash (as Damon’s friend) and Max (as Justin’s friend) in book one. They were just as likeable in their own book and less broken mentally than the prior couple.

Ash and Max worked for me as a couple because they were opposites. One man was hiding his heart because of fear and past hurt, and the other one was actively pursuing his heart’s desire. One person wanted nothing to do with relationships and the other was looking for the love of his life. Both men did however have a heart for others. Their daily jobs involved assisting disadvantaged people who need a safe space and that was so endearing.

What I loved about this story was the author really took these guys on a journey of growth. The brokenness that was so evident in the beginning was systematically healed with love, patience and passionate sex. Their physical chemistry was undeniable, but their desire to help others was the foundation upon which Ash and Max built their relationship.
I really loved Ash because in book 1 he proved that he is loyal and steadfast to those he loves. He was helping pregnant patients who couldn’t afford care and housing. He was just a great guy! He cares for others and fought for others. I loved how Ash asked for help in getting through to Max and he listened and followed the advice. I almost forgot that Ash had some issues from his past that were unresolved too. He had hurts too but he tried to keep positive and not live in the past. I was happy when Max finally began fighting for Ash and proving his love for Ash.

The sex scenes were so HOT.

At times it was sweet, and at times it was just raw and animalistic. But both men gave as good as they got in the sack. Wow. I mean, I was blushing! I loved it. This part of their union was definitely clicking on all cylinders.

Most of all, the author did a wonderful job tying in the friendships with Damon and Justin from the book 1 and I was so happy to see how far those two had come. Their friendship and respective romance came full circle. I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait for the next book.

*Special thanks for the e-book given in exchange for an honest review.

This is sort of a continuation of the first book, which I highly recommend, where we met Damon (and Blake) and Justin. It furthers the story by focusing on Max and Ash, both of whom we met the first time around. While you could get by starting here, there is a lot of backstory that explains how we got here and you would be missing out if you decided to go that route.

Max is Damon’s neighbor, the guy who runs the center where Justin now volunteers. He’s the man Justin friended and tried to take things further with when he was going through his troubles with Damon/Blake. Justin, and even a reluctant Damon, have continued the friendship. Max is suffering from a very big broken heart and punishes himself by not allowing himself to ever be put in that situation again.

Ash is Damon’s best friend from childhood. He is an obstetrician who has done very well for himself and although he wants a solid relationship, has just not met the right person yet. He also happens to be the one who found Damon’s brother (have to read the first book to learn about that tragedy) and it haunts him to this day with nightmares.

Ash and Max have amazing chemistry, but there are a lot of stumbling blocks in their way. Ash uses different tactics to break through to Max and ultimately starting with friendship is what gets the job done and his persistence pays off. But Max has to confront his past in order to move forward with his future, and Ash is there by his side when needed. Unfortunately, Ash has never really done the same, instead choosing to find other ways to manage his nightmares rather than dealing with the cause. Luckily, these two flip flop back and forth and come out on the other side together and stronger in their relationship than before.

I was not as blown away by this book as I was with the first and admit I was hoping to see more of Justin and Damon’s journey. But, this story also needed to be told, and while it lacked the intensity of Surviving the Merge, it was still a great story that I have no trouble recommending. C.P. Harris is a new author who came out of the gate at full speed, and I have definitely been impressed with what I’ve seen so far. I hope we get more in this series, but won’t hesitate to check out future books as well.

A magnificent story!
This narrative swallowed me in completely, I didn’t stand a chance, to stop or even sleep.
It was intriguing, heartbreaking, intense, emotional, layered, and hot af.

Max and Ash

Ash loves unconditional and hard. When Max loves it’s complicated and anxious.

They had a hot encounter in the bathroom of a bar. Ash left his card but Max never called.
Both are unable to forget the other. They never expected to have mutual friends and couldn’t avoid each other anymore, even though Max tried again and again.

Ash wants to conquer Max badly but Max has high walls. The only way to reach him is to be friends. Ash could do that, still, he wants to know Max better. Max doesn’t let him until there are no other options left to do.

Bit by bit we get to know the devastating story of Max and why he fled from Kentucky.
Alternating between Max past and present and both their point of few, we get to know every heartbreaking aspect. Prepare yourself!
We are witness of how Max and Ash handle it all, or maybe more, how they didn’t.

Max and Ash are two beautiful men inside and outside. They have an intense relationship with strong and rough sexual encounters with a lot of dirty talk. Ash’s sweet observations did funny things to my heartstrings. I was in awe of his kindness, determination, and uplifting attitude. Max has to dive deep to recover and when he does... ahh *heart in eyes*
As side stories we meet their families and friends, their work, The Center, also Damon and Justin, from book #1, are there!

Impressively stunning story with a mountain of emotions and feelings. It has a well thought out plot. All beautifully written and developed with a lot of emotional layers. They have the best and most deserved, happily ever after!
Read it yourself!

Ash and Max have past that haunt them.
Ash in his nightmares.
Max with his heart.
They meet one night in a bar and have a quick hard bathroom hookup.
They never expect to run into each other again.
Ash turns out to be the brother of Damon who is Justin's, Max's friend, boyfriend.
Max is reluctant to have Ash in his life.
Ash doesn't want to let Max go so easily.
Can Max let go of his past to create a future with Ash or will he hold on to it and ruin what they can have?

The book was entertaining. It had moments I loved and moments I really didn't care for. I understand Max's emotions. He was truly hurt in one of the worse ways by someone he loved. What I didn't get was Ash's behavior towards the end. I really was loving him but his jealous angry side was a bit OTT and seemingly out of character. These two traded places at the end. Max was the one fighting for Ash and it was cute but a bit cheesy in what he did to win Ash back lol. Overall these guys were really HOT together...like needed to fan oneself hot. The epilogue was really sweet.

Before I start babbling about this story I'd just like to say that while the blurb says this one can be read as a standalone story and in essence I don't dispute that. I do honestly think that in order to truly appreciate the characters in this story especially some of the secondary characters that reading the first book would definitely be highly beneficial.

I finished reading this one a couple of days ago and while a lot of it was ok, it was somewhere in the last 30ish per cent that things just seemed to go off the rails for me.

I really liked both Max and Ash when they were introduced in the first book, so when it turned out that this was going to be their story...as in they were going to become a couple, I was all in.

These guys are intelligent, caring, mature, sexy, incredibly intense men who are both have busy lives and established careers. They also have a bit of baggage from their past that each of them needs to deal with. Max's is a bit more recent and definitely something that would shatter the strongest of hearts. While Ash's issues aren't as recent, in their own way they prove to be just as detrimental to the relationship that he and Max are trying to build if for no other reason than the fact that the heart and mind can only bury things for so long before it all begins to take a toll.

I loved watching their mating dance as Max tried to deny his feelings and keep a very determined Ash at arms length. With Justin as a friend and his partner Damon being Ash's best friend Max knows that avoiding Ash completely isn't something that's going to happen but he's determined to keep things from going beyond friendly between them. Ash on the other hand is determined that friends is only the beginning of what's between him and Max.

I loved that their relationship was built on talking and time spent together outside of the bedroom as well as in the bedroom, all combined to present an incredibly strong and intense relationship.

Along with the romance that we got in this one, I loved having another peek at Justin and Damon, Pete, Sam and a few others so honestly the first 60ish percent of this one for me was easily 4 very shiny stars...however...

and here is where I get vague because this is me and there are a lot of other reviews out there that present a different school of thought about the ending of this story and I'm not prepared to spoil things or dissuade someone who might feel as they do from enjoying this story...so bottom line...the last part of this book had some things that just...did...not...work...for me.

One of the things that took away from my enjoyment of the ending was the time gap between the ending of the book and the epilogue. I truly felt like that time gap covered some crucial relationship development that would have been nice to see at least a little bit of for a couple of reasons...one it might have helped me in regards to the ending of the story (point 'A') and it very possibly would have given a better connection to the epilogue (point 'B') but as I said earlier these are my thoughts as to part of the reason that things went off the rails for me and there are a number of readers/reviewers out there who feel differently...it's not a right or a wrong thing just different.

I loved the first book and while I may not have loved this one for the most part I liked it and I'm still looking forward to finding out what comes next in the final installment of 'The Chadwick Trilogy'.

[ Re-read in 2023. ] Gods, I loved it even more!!!! You don't understand how much Ash and Max mean to me. How important is for me to know they are happily ever after, and loving each other, even in tough times.

Original review:
Such a good sequel, I loved every second of it!

This time we get to know Max and Ash better. The first one is the definition of a good guy, you know, the man that’s always helping others and looking for things to do in The Center. Whilst, Ash is a doctor who exudes confidence in himself and what he does. They might look different from the outside, but their core is just the same: they like helping people and they’re good at it.

But, the thing is Ash has never been in a serious relationship, though he believes that one day he will find the one. And Max is just the opposite: once he gave himself to someone who did not actually cared for him and instead, he took everything that he was. So what happens when Ash wants to be with Max, when he just wants to run away from him, scared of the outcome, of what will happen to his already wounded heart?

Now, I don’t really want to give away big spoilers but you have to know that I enjoyed the way they met and then how they slowly progressed into a beautiful relationship. I admire Ash patience and how he managed to get someone like Max (and like me) to love him –I have to be honest and say that I fall for him a little bit too.

Max, on the other hand, was too relatable for me: I’ve loved and lost important people in my life and that has changed me into who I am today. I’m not proud of everything I’ve done and sure as hell need to grow and become a better person, but sometimes, all it takes is letting yourself live. When you let yourself be loved wonderful things happen, because you stop living in the past, you enjoy the present and look for the future.

I love when books make me think about my own life, friends and family. This means they changed something in me, and we are not the same after we read them. After I finished the book I felt grateful, cherished and hopeful. I saw my life in retrospective and came to the conclusion that even if we’re living in uncertain times, we should always be grateful for the people who make it more bearable and ultimately, better. They’re worth it.

So it’s no news that C. P. Harris is a new favorite author of mine and I’m seriously grateful that she considered me for both of her books. But even if I had not received a copy, I would totally encourage you to read them because she makes you feel those words, those emotional scenes and the love Max and Ash shared, man, I could feel it in my bones.

I repeatedly said I felt called out, but don’t take this the wrong way. Max and I shared some thoughts and emotions and sometimes it’s hard to read something experienced by yourself. Fortunately, Max got his HEA with a caring, loving man, and that’s all that matters.

Anyway, while this may be read as a stand-alone I think that it works better if you know the characters from the previous book. To see Damon’s friendship with Ash was something I thoroughly enjoyed. Also Pete growing up into a wonderful young man too. I guess you could say that I’m to invested in these stories and if C. P. Harris ever wants to write more about the people in Chadwick, I’d love to read it.

At the end of the day, isn’t it better to take the risk and begin a new life? To have a new love?

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, C.P. Harris is really making a name for herself in the gay romance genre. This is her second book released in her premier year as an author, and they are both slam dunks.

If you read Surviving the Merge then you have an idea of what the writing style is, but even though this is a series, I assure you this isn’t the same experience as the first book.

STM was haunting and beautiful in its more shadowy areas. STB delivers us with mood but somehow without the heaviness - and that is what can get you through this book so quickly. (So quickly that you regret it when it’s over.)

While I was curious about Max after reading STM, I wasn’t as excited about Ashton, but after reading the book, he is now one of my favorite characters in the Chadwick universe. He was so unbelievably human - flaws and perfections all rolled into one - that you wanted him in your life. And Max’s story was revealed so stunningly through flashbacks, it was another layer, another reading experience of its own. We knew his heartbreak was raw and valid, but learning the full extent of what had taken place was astounding.

I also would be doing a severe injustice if I didn’t mention how incredible it was to read and experience more of Damon and Ashton together. Getting to see Damon’s continued evolution and healing through this friendship was so special.

And of course Pluto! What an incredible (and important!) side character and backdrop!

An easy 5 ⭐️’s and an easy recommendation. This book can technically be read on its own, but truly the full experience comes from beginning at book one. C.P. Harris has invested so much into this universe and the details, you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to.

Captivating read that kept my attention from start to finish. Dual POV works great to flesh out both MCs and get into their heads. Max is a good guy with big heart who does his best to help children in need. He suffered a huge betrayal from his former partner and now is afraid to open up to love and relationships again. Ash is a successful doctor who runs a clinic for young unmarried pregnant girls and does his best to help them. He never was in love before but he wants to experience it and have real relationships. Max and Ash are instantly attracted to each other but Max wants to run from it while Ash is all in from the beginning. The chase was great and I was fascinated with MCs developing relationships.
It was 5 star read up to the moment the reason for Max behavior was revealed. While the reason made total sense and explained so much about Max the way Ash got it out of Max was so not them. I just couldn't wrap my head where it all came from. And it only got worse afterwards. Max jealosy was highlighted but then just disappeared after the big break and was never addressed again. The reason for Ash break was not convincing and his reaction was so out of character.
I really appreciated Max efforts to prove his love to Ash and the gestures were beautiful but it could be done without added drama that only was there for the sake of drama.
At the end love felt real between those two and epilogue was everything I wanted for them so a solid 4 star read overall.

Raw.
This book. Phew. God.
Anyway, this book.
I'm having trouble expressing myself.
The word that comes to my mind after reading this book is raw.
This book is a love story. And it cannot be called beautiful. It's painful at times. It rings very true and so honest...
This is the story of Max, a broken man fighting his demons and Ash, a man who never had to fight those of the likes -- and yes, they're both fighting to be able to love each other right. But is there such thing as right? But there IS such thing as brave!
Not slow going; not fast paced; no wasted, empty, shallow or unnecessary lines. Just the right amount of everything.
The angst, possessiveness and steam make your toes curl and the HEA? That makes your chest ache.
CP Harris makes incredible magic happen on page with her words.
I loved STM. But this book is something else. Definitely among the best books I've read this year. I couldn't give it less than 5 stars. It would be dishonest. And there's no room for that when it concerns this story.

Miss QUEEN Harris is the real deal, friends. 👑
I won an ARC of this book in the author's Facebook group. I was nervous, because I'm one of a handful of people who've been given this privilege. What if it bombed? What if she was a one-phenom-wonder? What if I just didn't like it because I just didn't like it? 😬

All my doubts disappeared within the first two chapters.

The strength of this book is the its couple. Miss Harris has a knack for creating complex, flawed, relatable people. You feel their joy, their sorrow, their love, their jealousy. Every emotion has its own story.

She then surrounds them with compelling side characters, people I'd like to be friends with. And if you're worried that Justin, Blake and Damon have minor cameos at best, that is anything but true. They are all part of the history for Max and Ash. We also get more of a few characters we met in StM (Pete and Sam, just to name a few).

And then there's the sex.
MY GOD THE SEX🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. The dirty talk alone has its own degree of scorching. It's filthy and emotional and it melted my panties off my damn body. (I still want to see that editing room floor copy of what happens in the woods.)

For me to give a book five stars, I need to feel the emotions, going from laughing 😂 to crying 😭. I can always tell which books will stay with me. You know, how seven months from now I'm watching tv and see a scene that immediately brings Max and Ash to mind.
StB checked off every box for me, and then some. 🤘

The book hangover is real with this one. Usually, I dive right into the next book. I'm going to let this one linger though, at least for today. 🧘‍♀️🙏

So yeah... when's the next one coming out? Asking for a friend. 😉

I was fortunate enough to get an early copy of this book from the author.

This was probably my most anticipated book this year, since Chadwick #1 (Surviving the Merge) is my #1 read of 2020. And it did not disappoint.

* Max is so broken, and when you find out why it is heartbreaking and angering and everything all at once.
* Ash is pushy (though not like Damon pushy... he's very different) and has his own demons to fight.
* Justin, Damon, Sam, Pete, Pluto... all there and not just in a walk on which is awesome. This book fills out the world and builds on it.
* HOT. Uff. So hot. Did I mention hot? Floor sex hot. Barn sex hot. Dirty as all get out.

I love how different this story is while keeping with the feel of the world being built. This is not Damon & Justin redux, it is Max and Ash's story.

Harris's characters are flawed, emotional, and dominating and I adore them. This is a great follow up to StM. I can't wait for the next one!

This really didn’t come easy for Max. Too much damage made him gun shy. Ash was determined, however, and his persistence won out. Happiness seems to be an elusive concept for these two as they struggle greatly. Their happiness was touching, though it was laden with many, many doubts. These doubts gave the book the angst that made it irresistible. The heroes, the supporting cast and the story itself all brought this book to life. Well told, well written and a HEA that gave you that warm and fuzzy happy feeling. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

Surviving the Break had so many land mines, you had to read carefully what was happening to avoid them. Both Max and Ash had serious baggage, but while it seemed Ash was already dealing with his baggage, you found he really wasn't. Max on the other hand was drowning in his baggage and by the time he was surfacing, Ash started drowning. They had to save each other in order to find their happily ever after.

C.P. Harris is continuing her “Chadwick” series with “Surviving the Break”. If you follow my reviews on any social media platform then you will know that the first book “Surviving the Merge” is one of my favorites of the M/M romance genre. I was a little apprehensive going into the second book as I had such high expectations! I’m happy to report that Harris didn’t let me down! I would say that you could read this book without having read the first one…but if you did, you’d be missing out on a fantastic book.

Max heads out one night hoping for a hook-up. He doesn’t do relationships… not anymore… and he finds himself having an encounter that sparks something inside him to life. He’s left with the man’s jacket and a business card… but knows he’ll never see Ashton again. Except… that he does. Ashton, it turns out, is Damon’s best friend, Ash and he is definitely interested in more with Max.

While “Surviving the Break” is a less complex plot than the first book in the series it has several things going for it. This book partially overlaps with the timeline of the first book. For those of you continuing the series, this provides lovely glimpses into the previous character. For instance, Damon – one of the main characters from the first book – appears throughout this second novel. I was left with a much better understanding of his character and loved getting to know him from the perspective of his best friend, Ash.

Ash is a wonderful character. It would be easy to dismiss him as a “stereotypical” doctor at first, but Harris has gifted her readers with another unique and interesting character. I fell in love with Ash. He’s cocky and self-confident, he’s caring, he is so honest it’s painful and he’s funny. He’s grown up in a very different way to Max.

Oh, Max. Max appeared in the first Chadwick book as Justin’s neighbor. He was a little skittish, sweet, and had a wounded sort of air about him. In this book, I was totally engaged with his story. Max has heartache and betrayal in his past. Harris reveals this through cleverly placed flashbacks to Max’s youth. I loved the pacing of the reveals. I found myself unable to put the book down because I needed to know what had wounded Max so badly. The depiction of Max’s hurt was intense and authentic and I sure felt it.

These two men together are a recipe for a hell of a chase, smoking hot sex and heartache. I loved how Justin and Damon were woven into this plot… it was so interesting to see them from another perspective. There is a great cast of supporting characters as well including a lovely young trans dancer. Harris has an eye for details and even the supporting characters demonstrate growth and movement.

Harris has a really great writing style. The book is emotional and engaging without being over-written or cumbersome. Some of Harris’ sentences are so direct and efficient and yet still a complete punch to the gut. I can’t really explain it, but these books are really some of the best of have read in 2020 (If not ever). You definitely won’t regret reading this series.

Why is it so much more moving when two buff men profess their undying love for one another?
I love a hetero romance as much as the next person but there is just something about a gay love story written by a woman about two athletic men that seems more…something. I don’t even know. This one is well-written, slow-burn, passionate and ends beautifully. Throughout the narrative there are some discerning life lessons. Several touching moments: grandpa’s death gift, Pluto’s attention, story behind the black pearl and more…
After recognizing something in each other over drinks at a bar, Max and Ash enjoy a tryst in the men’s room and leave with memories that neither can forget. In their pasts both men had enjoyed a one-night-stand here and there. After this encounter however both start to have inklings of something more. But Max is hard-headed and won’t call Ash even though he left his business card. Fate has other ideas. It appears that they have mutual friends and meet again.
What a great start to a fantastic book! Max has a secret that holds him back from professing his “like” for Ash. When we finally find out what Hayden meant to Max, well, just hold on. I guarantee you it is heart wrenching. I loved this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and it gets my high praise.

Get to this goodness! Get to it now!
Author Harris has once again gifted me with a lovely story and a massive book hangover. *Rips reader heart out and hands it to the Author*

I absolutely loved the author's debut novel and consider it one of my top reads of this year and Surviving the break stole my heart in yet another elegant and pulchritudinous manner.

Whilst Justin and Damon's story in book #1 celebrated the strength and cure-all nature of true love that helps one triumph through insurmountable odds, Ash and Max's story celebrates subtler aspects of love that are oft overlooked-patience, sacrifice, commitment, care and what it means to believe and keep faith in the power of true love.

The story follows Max and Ash as they keep playing a game of cat-and-mouse as Max refuses to give in to Ash's charms, desperately latching on to his insecurities and ideals of loneliness that he has constricted for himself to keep heartbreak at bay. As the duo give in to the attraction, old wounds are wrecked open again and the fate of their future remains in how the two break free from the clutches of the past. Their chemistry is simply off the charts (which is something that I think this Author excels at) and the intimate scenes were both tender and HOT to read (some seriously HAWT stuff).
|What brought me to climax was the small memories that our love was built on. Ash grabbing my waist and placing noisy rapid-fire kisses all over my face before ducking and leaving a room. Or him saying, “I want to be in you.”And me questioning why. “Because it’s the best place to get lost,”he’d reply.|

Once again, Author Harris' has succeeded in creating an engaging storyline with brilliant imagery to her words that helps accentuate the tumult of emotions and weave together a beautiful story of anguish, hope, support and overwhelming love that is so very heartwarming to read.
I personally loved the emphasis that the author placed on the bond the MCs shared with the side characters, be it Paula's love for her son, Damon's brotherly affection towards his bestfriend or Max's bond with the kids at the community center. In a way, this book celebrates all forms of love. Even self love that I think our MCs realise at the end. Very beautifully written.

Also the epilogue set a few years in the future is such a treat to read. Author Harris is definitely one to watch out for in the coming years. Can't wait for book #3.
If you are looking for a book that will take hold of your readers' heart, make it fall in love with the notion of love and leave you yearning for a romance of your own, one-click this one ASAP.

This is the second book in the Chadwick Chronicles and can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading book 1 first to get a better idea on the universe in which it is set and the side characters.

This was simply brilliant. The author knows how to write and she has done a commendable job on this one.

The emotion I felt from the characters was raw gritty and real. The characters were relatable and well fleshed out. The author didn’t hold back on the steamy scenes and I am so grateful for that. The passion and chemistry between the characters in and out of the bedroom was sizzling and downright hot.

This book took me on a roller-coaster if emotions. Believe or not, I couldn’t help myself to put this down and read it in a single sitting. Yes! It's that good.

What I liked most was that we have two MC's who are not at all perfect. They bear emotional scars and carry baggage, but when they come together they fit like two pieces of a puzzle. Pure Perfection!

I am in awe of Miss Harris's writing.
The way she portrays her characters and their emotions is plaudible.

If you are looking for an opposites attract romance with possessive MC's and paired with medium to high angst, with all the feels.
Look no further! This definitely won't dissapoint.

Fabulous sequel to Surviving the Merge. Great story, character and relationship development. Lots of angst due to a plot twist I haven’t seen before. MCs has to really work hard for their HEA. Highly recommended

Oh my, Just as completely amazing as book one. Surviving the break was a complete non stop page turner. I love C.p. Harris's writing style. The stories are complete, great Mc's and supporting characters. Her dialog is really smooth, and the sex scenes, Smokin hot and perfectly vivid. I loved Ash and Max. I look forward to more stories from this author, who is now an auto buy.

If you read the first book in the series and can't recall these main characters, Max is Justin's neighbor when he retreats to his family home. Ash is Damon's best friend.

Max is a sweetie with a giant heart that has been completely smashed. The broken pieces are hidden behind a wall that he refuses to let fall. Ash comes from a somewhat underprivileged childhood and suffered a great loss when he was young. However, he is on the opposite side of the healing coin and looking for great romantic love and commitment to help build himself up again.

I was SO PROUD of myself for not crying while reading this book. During the entire read I thought: "This is sooo mild compared to "Surviving the Merge (Chadwick #1)". I am totally hardened against unrequited love!" Oh how wrong I was... Cut to the last paragraph of the book, and I'm crying a river, but for completely different reasons than "Surviving the Merge."

This book can be read as a standalone, but I wouldn't recommend it for a few reasons: 1. "Surviving the Merge (Chadwick #1)" may produce a flood of emotions, but it is a six-star read! 2. "Surviving the Merge (Chadwick #1)" will give you full insight into Ash's past, which isn't fully described in this installment. Max's past is more focused here. 3. "Surviving the Merge" will also show you the relationships between the first and secondary characters, who strongly support the MCs in this book.

The steam and dirty talk is off the charts! These are a couple of dominant, angry men fighting for control between the sheets (and on the floor, and against the wall, and on the table, and in the barn...). Me like ;)

This book is a great companion to the first book in the series - Surviving the Merge. In this book, Max (a supporting character from Bk 1) is badly hurt from an extremely painful breakup the year prior. To cope, he engages in a series of one-night stands, but nothing really heals the hurt. One night, he meets Ash, an obstetrician, in a bar and they meet up in the bathroom for a quickie. The two men go their separate ways, but neither can forget that spark of something special. When their paths cross again professionally and socially, they are forced to confront their attraction and fears. Max is afraid to get close to anyone because he doesn't think he can survive another break-up of that magnitude. Ash has never had a serious relationship before and, although willing to try, is unsure how to go about it with someone so reticent. Can these two men find their emotional healing and forever love? This book has a ton of passion, a host of family and friends, a lot of soul searching, and a beautiful love story.

Just Beautiful

As I sit here having just finished this book, I feel so many emotions. This book gave me soooo many feels and it was beautifully written. Great job to C.P.! If there is ever any doubt that your were meant to do this, get rid of them. I can’t wait to read more by you.

After recently discovering C P Harris she has totally rocked my socks off with not one but two absolutely stunning books. Surviving The Break stood up gallantly to the first book Surviving The Merge. Max and Ash had a lot of stumbling blocks to cross. Both of them have past hurts that they need to cleanse. The journey is spectacular and had me totally captivated from start to finish. Full of angst, heat, romance, hurt/comfort. I can only say how happy I am to have found this very talented writer. I very highly recommend reading this book as well as the first book in the series. Cant wait to see what is next!!!

Great addition to this series! Ash and Max were pure fire together. Their baggage ran deep, but the unconditional love and respect they had for one another smoothed out their rough edges. I swooned over the way they loved each other hard and fierce ❤️❤️❤️

I'm excited to see what Ms. Harris has up her sleeve next!

One of the best books I have read in a long time

I am so incredibly in love with Max and Ash, their struggle and the way they love are epic and I felt their love in my soul as I was reading this book. I wish it didn't have to end but I sincerely hope this series continues.

I gave up when Ash goes on about how he only previously dated refined men, after stating multiple times in the book that he has never dated at all before. The inconsistency was glaring and annoyed me into a DNF.
