About the author

Kateřina Tučková (nar. 1980) vystudovala dějiny umění a bohemistiku na FF MU v Brně, v současné době pracuje jako kurátorka. Debutovala novelou Montespaniáda (2006), v roce 2009 vydala román Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch, za který obdržela cenu Magnesia Litera 2010 – Knižní klub Cena čtenářů a byla nominována na Cenu Josefa Škvoreckého, Magnesii Literu za prózu a Cenu Jiřího Ortena. Je autorkou několika odborných publikací z oblasti českého výtvarného umění, na pomezí historie a krásné literatury se pohybuje beletrizovaný životopis Můj otec Kamil Lhoták (2008).

Having read countless historical fiction novels, I was instantly intrigued by “Gerta’s” premise and wow, it certainly didn’t disappoint! The writing was imaginative and lyrical, instantly transporting me into a war-ravaged world where hatred and violence penetrate the very air Gerta breathes and where one’s nationality can become a death sentence, and it matters not whether this particular person was a collaborator or someone simply trying to live their life, just like Gerta. What I also appreciated was how Gerta’s inner conflict was presented: born to a Czech mother and a German father, she was seemingly torn between two worlds, a child of two different, warring nations and cultures, condemned no matter what, disdained for her “Czechness” by her father and expelled from her own native land for no other reason other than being that German father’s child.

Throughout the entire story, I couldn’t help but admire Gerta’s resilience. Starting with domestic trauma that would be enough to break anyone and later, being subjected to abuse, rape, and humiliation that drove even more women to suicide. And despite all, she persevered, she refused to surrender, she chose to live if not for her own sake, but for her daughter and just for that, I couldn’t help but applaud the strength of her spirit and her courage.

Besides the wonderful main heroine you can’t help rooting for, the novel is populated with a truly unforgettable cast of characters - good and bad, profiteers and most selfless souls, ones who chose revenge and those who chose forgiveness despite all. At times, the story reads like a memoir and it’s that authenticity that made it a truly unforgettable read for me. Life is never black and white and people are never just villains or heroes. They’re real people, just like Gerta and those who abused or helped her - the fact that the author wrote about the rarely mentioned part of Czech history in such realistic, raw terms without glossing anything over is what made the novel stand out among many others in the same genre. I’m so glad I chose it as my first kindle read of 2021! If you’re a fan of the genre, I really can’t recommend it highly enough!

Reads like a biography

Manchmal sind es gerade die eindrucksvollen Bücher, deren Review schwerfällt. Es gilt nicht nur Gedanken, sondern auch Emotionen zu ordnen. Letztere hat dieser Roman in mir angerührt wie lange kein Buch. Die junge (geboren 1980) tschechische Autorin Kateřina Tučková hat es 2009 veröffentlicht. Der tschechische Titel „Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch“ (Die Vertreibung der Gerta Schnirch) war eine Provokation für die tschechische Öffentlichkeit, lautet doch der offizielle Sprachgebrauch „Odsun“ (Abschiebung).

Die Handlung beginnt in Brünn/Brno in der Endphase des 2. Weltkrieges, während der es zur sogenannten „wilden Vertreibung“ kam, die im Brünner Todesmarsch mündete. Auch Gerta Schnirch, die titelgebende Hauptperson, musste zusammen mit ihrer neugeborenen Tochter den Weg Richtung österreichischer Grenze antreten. Ihre Mutter war Tschechin, ihr Vater aber ein deutscher Nationalsozialist. Durch Gertas Augen erleben wir das Leid dieser Frauen, Kinder und Alten, die Entbehrungen, Schläge und Vergewaltigungen, deren auch sie ausgesetzt war. Wir begleiten sie ins Lager Pohrlitz/ Pohořelice und in das Dorf Bergen/Perná, wo sie mit anderen Frauen bei einer Bäuerin als Erntehelferin unterkommt. Trotz einfachster Bedingungen (ein Bett für vier Frauen) war dies ihre Rettung, denn die Hofbesitzerin Frau Zipfelová erwies sich als grundgütige Frau. In der Folge darf Gerta zwar wieder nach Brünn zurückkehren, man lässt sie aber zeitlebens spüren, dass sie als Deutsche wenn schon nicht minderwertig, so doch unzuverlässig ist und infolge dessen nur für niedrige Arbeiten in Frage kommt.

Was diesen Roman auszeichnet ist sein Einfühlungsvermögen in das individuelle Leid, Leid, das Leid bleibt. Egal, wer der Verursacher ist und in welcher Zeit es angetan wird. Diesen Satz zitiert die Autorin aus einem offenen Brief der Brünner Initiative „Jugend für interkulturelle Verständigung“. Diese setzte sich seit der Jahrtausendwende für eine ehrliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit ein. Es dauerte aber bis 2015, sechs Jahre nach Veröffentlichung dieses Buches, bis der Stadtrat sich offiziell mit fast demselben Wortlaut bei den damaligen Opfern entschuldigte. Dabei werden weder in dieser Erklärung noch in dem Buch die Verbrechen der Deutschen an Tschechen außer Acht gelassen. Ganz im Gegenteil. Erst durch dieses Buch habe ich von der unbeschreiblichen Brutalität deutscher Einsatzkommandos gegen tschechische Dörfer in Wolhynien gehört, wo (wie in Český Malín) die gesamte Bevölkerung in eine Scheune gesperrt und bei lebendigem Leibe verbrannt wurde.

Gerta Schnirch was raised by a Czech mother and a German father in Brno, Czechoslovakia during Hitler’s rise to power. She always identified with her mother's Czech values and often clashed with her father over his Nazi ideology. The war eventually shatters her parent’s relationship and her simple childhood. As the war winds down, the political climate of their country changes, and blame is cast on anyone with German heritage.

Gerta is expelled from Brno and forced to march west to Austria. Both German and Czech collaborators join her on this journey where they suffer greatly. Gerta manages to survive while others are killed or fall ill with dysentery. Her dreams of returning to her former home are also delayed when Czechoslovakia is invaded by the Soviet Union.

Gerta by Katerina Tuckovar provides a different perspective on the aftermath of World War 2 and the continuation of hatred and punishment towards mankind. Many of the survivors on both sides of the war were innocent bystanders who fell victim to extreme circumstances.

Těžko hledám slova. Tahle knížka na mě až nečekaně zapůsobila. Po Žítkovských bohyních, které všichni vychvalovali do nebes, a mě zase až tak nesebraly, jsem nejspíš nic neočekávala. A místo "nic" jsem dostala nálož emocí, nálož něčeho tak nesmírně těžkého a temného, že se mi tajil dech. Kdo je vinen, a kdo ne? Lze to vůbec posuzovat a kdo má právo posuzovat a odsuzovat? A lze vůbec odpouštět? Těžko odpovědět a Tučková se do nějakých mravokárných odpovědí ani nepouští, nechá na čtenáři, jak si téma přebere. Ze všeho nejvíc mi naskakuje stále slovo tíha, těžká doba, kterou zpětně nelze posoudit, tíha viny i odpuštění. Tak moc těžká a přitom tak moc silná je kniha Kateřiny Tučkové.

The story and the prose felt a little simple and sentimental to me. There is so much already written about WWII and its immediate aftermath that I feel fiction needs to surpass what has come before to justify itself. The other issue I struggle with is that fiction about this era seems a bit derivative always when compared with fiction written by those who lived through these times. We might be in a historical space where we’re too close to the era, and we’re not yet far enough away in years for something really new to be written about it. So what gets written feels sincere to me but also a bit plodding. I felt the same way about super-hits “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and “All the Light We Cannot See” so this book will probably appeal widely to readers who liked these novels.

Gerta is a young woman in Brno. WW2 is ending and with a German father she finds herself amongst the other people labelled German on a forced march and a life long of being unwanted in her native Czechoslovakia. The context of what happened to people, some whose families have lived for generations in Czechoslovakia was interesting. The story telling was not.
While mainly in the third person there was some chapters in the first and others that suddenly followed some other character. Some chapters were full of dialogue sounding like the character was being interviewed or a letter was used to provide some historical context.
The start of the book was fine it just failed to keep up the standard.

Po nadšení ze Žítkovských bohyní jsem byla na prvotinu stejné autorky hodně zvědavá. A Vyhnání G.S. mě dost překvapilo.
Nečekala jsem totiž, že kniha bude tak skvěle napsaná a současně o tolik temnější a drásavější než Bohyně. Jenže jaká jiná může být, když příběh sleduje poválečný osud Brňanky s matkou Češkou a otcem zapáleným náckem. Odsun Němců z Brna a všechny hrůzy s ním spojené, komunisti, normalizace...
Jestli nedávám plný počet bodů, tak je to vlastně asi jen proto, že se mi z téhle knihy bude pár dní hůř spát. Klobouk dolů před Kateřinou Tučkovou.

Knižní sucho na dovolené jsem musel řešit na uložtu a to už mě mělo varovat. Jenže když máte průjem, tak kromě gatí stáhnete cokoliv.

Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch je o tom, jak Gerta fandila ve válce špatnýmu týmu a pak musela za trest jít pěšky z Brna někam za Pohořelice. Moc dobře vím, co takový pochody obnáší, protože my jsme takhle s klukama taky v mládí chodili na diskotéky, až do Blížkovic, to bylo dobrejch sedm kilometrů, opilí, v noci a ještě ke všemu po polňačce. Žádná zábava, můžu potvrdit.

Problém s knížkou mám ale ten, že Tučková zdárně a otrocky vybarví šablonu hodné mladé poloněmky, co za nic nemůže a na bedra ji nasere všechny problémy, které se v Čechách vyskytly. Ani na sekundu jsem tý holce nemohl fandit, protože místo živý postavy jsem viděl jen prostředek, jak do knihy nacpat kroniku konce války v Brně. Moc tomu ze začátku nepomáhaly ani dialogy, který byly tak toporný, že by je měl problém ukočírovat i Filip Renč.

Pak to trochu zachránila docela dlouhá pasáž na vesnici, kde se Gerta proměnila v moravský Amistad. Tam to docela šlo a celá ta fraška s přerozdělováním půdy a následnou kolektivizací nevypadala tak násilně napatlaná na její osud. No a pak už si asi Tučkyně řekla, že když jednou píše román, tak do něj narve úplně všechno a za chvilku jsme tu měli soudruhy, šedesátej osmej rok a STB a to už jsem si připadal, že čtu Foresta Gumpa co místo běhání touží celej život jezdit šalinó. Nedalo se to vydržet a už vůbec tomu nepomáhal Tučkové styl, který jako by vypadl z pera nějaký angažovaný červenoknihovnice.

Že to všechno bylo za války špatný a po válce taky špatný víme všichni, stejně tak, že Češi i Němci byli v těch letech stejná verbež a nemaj si co vyčítat. Ale číst(psát) o tom takovouto umělohmotnou kroniku nemá moc smysl.

Tak prvýkrát som čítala niečo o vyhnaní Nemcov a bola to nálož, lebo v podstate o Benešových dekrétoch a celej tejto časti histórie som nevedela nič. Čítanie mi odsýpalo, výborná dynamika, vykreslenie postáv. Avšak kým spočiatku je dej rozložený na pár mesiacov, v poslednej tretine preskakujeme roky, desiatky rokov a dynamika sa stratila, nehovoriac o občasnej zmene rozprávačky. Snaha dodať do knihy aj rozmer matky a dcéry nebol úplne márny, ale napokon tam bol tak trochu nasilu a skôr ma rušil, aj keď dával v kontexte celého príbehu zmysel.

“Nemci odsúhlasili obsadenie Československa, všetci! Nepoznám jediného, čo by to nechcel. A všetci sa tu potom napchával ako prasce v žite, za protektorátu si tu každý nahrabal. Trpeli tým všetci Čechoslováci, jasné? Tak teraz si to pekne odnesú všetci Nemci. A potom nech sa pracú a nechajú nás v našej republike na pokoji.”

To, čo ma na ľudskej rase desí asi najviac, je naša schopnosť nenávidieť. Nenávidieť aj nezmyselne, do krvi, s besnením, masovo, nenávidieť v dave. Väčšina príbehov z druhej svetovej vojny je o takejto nenávisti, pomaly rastúcej a čoraz krutejšej, voči Židom. Táto kniha je iná. Ukazuje, kto sa sa stal objektom nenávisti po vojne.

Vysídlenie Nemcov z Československa v roku 1945 je temnou kapitolou, o ktorej sa nehovorí tak veľa ako o holokauste. Pritom v priebehu niekoľkých mesiacov museli svoje domovy opustiť doslova milióny ľudí. A z knihy Kateřiny Tučkovej zistíte, že rozzúrení obrancovia národa a záchrancovia krajiny nemali vo svojej krutosti zase tak ďaleko k fašistom. Mali pocit, že majú na to právo. Že sa môžu mstiť. Že im Nemci niečo... vlastne všetko dlhujú. Ale napriek bolesti a stratám, bola to zase len nenávisť, ktorá im zaslepila oči a vytiahla na povrch najnižšie pudy.

Gerta Schnirch, dieťa nemeckého otca a českej matky, nie je z rodiny významného pohlavára. Jej otec je úradník, ktorý Nemecko, nemeckosť a Hitlera žerie tak, že tým úspešne očkuje aj synáčika a dve ženy v rodine sú preňho iba chudery. Gerta teda o to viac prilipne k matke i čestine. So stále ešte priam detskou naivitou dlho nechápe zmeny, ktoré sa okolo nich dejú. Prečo miznú mamini priatelia a objavujú sa noví známi, buď z radov nemeckého obyvateľstva alebo kolaborantov. Nočná mora sa nekončí ani po vojne, vtedy ešte len naberá tú najdesivejšiu formu. S malou dcérou a doslova jedným kočíkom a kufríčkom sa, vyhnaná obyvateľmi Brna, vydáva na starstiplnú cestu, na ktorej zažije tie najväčšie hrôzy, aké si nikdy ani nepredstavovala.
V tejto časti som bola v stave knihu odložiť a nechať tak. Predýchala som a potom už krutostí ubudlo, ale Gerta nemala ani naďalej ľahký život. Už navždy bola Nemka, občianka nižšej kategórie. Kateřina Tučková nás previedla cez desaťročia komunizmu v našej krajine až do súčasnosti.

A práve v tom bola pre mňa slabina knihy. Akoby Gerta celé roky navliekala na svoju šnúrku iba čierne korálky nešťastia jednu po druhej, pričom viaceré pôsobili tak trošku ako klišé. Nemohla som sa ubrániť pocitu, že autorka tam chcela dostať rovno všetko. A keďže záver priniesol zaujímavý pohľad zo strany Gertinej dcéry, ľutovala som, že sa radšej Kateřina Tučková nesústredila viac na túto linku. Takto akoby len letmo prišla a odišla myšlienka, ktorá bola pre mňa mimoriadne silná. Škoda.

Vyhnanie Gerty Schnirch je ale napriek všetkému kniha, ktorá je aj s extrémne ťažkými scénami z kategórie "hltacích". Je nepochybne napísaná pútavo - najmä na debut! - a spracúva tému, ktorej sa v našej histórii nesmieme vyhýbať. Už len preto, aby sa neopakovala nenávisť z pomsty, z pocitu, že "na to predsa máme právo". Lebo nikdy nemáme právo byť rovnako zlí ako tí najhorší.

Gut lesbar und thematisch wichtig. Von daher empfehlenswert. Die Schilderungen wirken nach und ich glaube nicht, dass ich den Inhalt des Buches (die Details schon) so bald vergesse. Das ist viel und sagt etwas aus über das Anliegen, an die Vertreibung der Brünner Deutschen zu erinnern, und darüber, wie die Umsetzung gelungen ist. Im Ganzen überzeugend. Jedoch fallen kompositorische Schwächen literarisch ins Gewicht. Während der erste, konsequent aus Gertas Sicht geschriebene Teil, "aus einem Guss" erscheint und - bis auf die etwas unglaubliche Naivität in Sachen Politik -überzeugen kann, ist der zweite Teil multiperspektivisch angelegt und hat damit einen höheren Aussagewert. Es scheint, als sei der Autorin beim Schreiben irgendwann aufgefallen, dass die Konzentration auf Gertas Perspektive die Geschehnisse doch zu einseitig anti- tschechisch (und damit pro-deutsch) darstellen. Die daraus gezogene Konsequenz ist souverän, zerstört aber leider die stilistische Einheit des Romans. Man hätte sich gewünscht, von Anfang an mit den Sichten (Janicka!) und Erlebnissen (Karel!) anderer Personen konfrontiert zu werden. Aber das ist lässliches Gemäkel, bedenkt man die Wirkung, die das Buch auf jeden Fall entfaltet. Auf keinen Fall ist es Wasser auf die Mühlen der Vertriebenen- Verbände bzw. deren politische Vertreter, was ich befürchtet hatte. Im Gegenteil: Das Buch weist auf beschämende Weise darauf hin, um wie viel mehr sich die Nachfolgegenerationen ehemals vom Nazi- Regime hart betroffener Osteuropäer um die deutsche Minderheiten- Geschichte als "Versöhnung" kümmern, als das bei uns mit Blick auf Osteuropa der Fall ist. Der (sicher singuläre) Holocaust und seine daher (?) beinahe ausschließliche Propagierung überdecken das unermessliche Leid, das deutsche Okkupanten über viele Millionen Russen, Ukrainer, Belorussen, Polen, Bosniaken, Serben, Albaner, Griechen, usw. usf. gebracht haben. Tuckovas Sicht und Initiative ist von daher unbedingt begrüßenswert und vorbildhaft. Dem Buch ist, trotz der kleinen literarischen Mängel, die zum Punktabzug führen, eine weite Verbreitung zu wünschen!

Gerta is filled with an incredible story that cuts to the core; the author was not afraid to show the reader the hard truths that occurred post-WWII. We open with a group of ethnic Germans being forced out of their home in Brno in a death march, and what follows is the story if protagonist Gerta’s life from this point forward.

I appreciated the novel’s approach to reconciliation and seeking redress from the war crimes committed against ethnic Germans in Czechoslovakia. This is not a subject that one hears much about. I did, however, get a little lost at points; certain chapters switch POV without much indication that it is happening, and keeping track of place names or at what place we were in the chronology was a challenge at times.

I was left feeling bereft by the end; it is a relentless story with no redemption at the end. To me, the ending felt as though it were unfinished or rushed. The constant pathos without any let up was too much at times for this reader. Gerta is painted as a tragic figure, and one with no strength at the end. I wanted more for the protagonist. Ultimately, I know this unrelenting look at this historic events is not meant to allow the reader any comfort; the bracing nature of this read, I think, is meant to force us to confront our history in hopes that the living memory endures.

I would recommend this book to those interested in reading more about what happened to ethnic Germans in Czechoslovakia (modern day Czech Republic and Slovakia); the story itself is very interesting, but it failed in execution in my opinion. It could be that the translation did not work for me.

I love historical fiction, I couldn't possible count how many books I've read, so: this book was very informative & interesting on historical facts. I never knew how difficult life was for those with gemanic roots in Czech after WW11. However the book lost me time & time again, it was depressing, lacked any momentum and I found myself skimming just to get to the end. I also feel that it was not the best translation.

Veľmi silná kniha. Toto je vážne prvotina? Nechce sa mi veriť. Čítala som nejaké knihy o Nemcoch, ktorí skutočne želali Židom to, čo im Hitler nachystal a nemám ružové okuliare, no taktiež si nemyslím, že naozaj všetci Nemci verili v nacistickú ideológiu. Sama Gerta toto správanie neschvaľuje, čo z nej robí kladnú hrdinku a stavia ju do opozície voči otcovi a bratovi.
Stane sa jej však mnoho zlých vecí, kvôli čomu sa mi jej príbeh čítal veľmi ťažko a po dočítaní vo mne ostal pocit depresie. Zdalo sa mi, že sa Gerte predsa len stalo všetko zlé, čo sa v tých časoch, kedy žila, mohlo stať. Aj keď ktovie, možno taká nešťastná osoba naozaj žila.
Kniha má veľmi široký záber, či už časový, alebo tematický. Strata národnej identity, ženstva, slobody, znášanie utrpenia za hriechy národa.
Pripomenulo mi to román Hana, ktorý som tento rok tiež čítala, no tá bola o židovstve, zatiaľ čo Gerta je o vyrovnávaní sa s povojnovou nenávisťou k Nemcom žijúcim v Brne. Musím však povedať, že nemám rada takú intenzívnu depresiu a z toho dôvodu sa mi Žitkovské bohyne páčili viac.

This book is uneven. It does address an unknown (at least to me) part of the aftermath of WWII in Europe. And while the section up until about 1950 was long, it at least flowed and was readable. After that, the book was all over the place. The storyline could have been condensed, and I found myself skimming multiple pages. Finally, the ending comes with a thud, as if the author ran out of ideas of how to finish the book.

This one took effort to get to the end and I am, frankly, grateful to be done with it. On the one hand, this covers a specific place and time that I know very little about. And it made me search out additional information on the death march and what happened within Czechoslovakia during this time which I always appreciate. It is graphic at times and super challenging to read just because of the inhumanity of...well, almost everyone. But really, how would you write about these acts during this time period in a way that is effective but not raw, not graphic?

But why I can't rate it any higher than I did was just the writing. Certainly translation may have played a role (all of a sudden, in the end, 2 older ladies who had lived through horrendous conditions suddenly used the phrase 'girlfriend' which was startling), but the organization of the book in and of itself was just not effective at all -- it really made it a chore to get through. I often didn't know what time in history specific chapters were taking place until a page or two into the chapter. Sometimes I didn't even know from whose point of view the chapters were from for a page or two. There was one chapter early in the book that basically laid out the entire history of a specific family and what happened to them during the war before we even knew what happened to the main character. And then almost no mention of this family the remaining 400 pages. One chapter was entirely a conversation between 2 men -- and written dialect of one of these men was hard to even read. Just that one chapter.

Ultimately, the characters were rich and for the most part, well developed. The historical setting is a story that needs to be told. I learned a lot and the depiction of the relationship between Gerta and her daughter later in life will haunt me a bit. I am glad though that I pushed through and finished it... But the author just couldn't pull it all together in a cohesive way well enough for me to recommend this one to others.

Gerta je příběh od druhé světové až do revoluce. Příběh o ženě, která si to odskákala jen proto, že měla za otce nácka.

Vím, že to za války bylo špatné. Že za komunismu to nebylo o nic lepší. Jak moc hrozn�� to bylo je představitelné jen na běžnědenním životě lidí ve své době. A protože Gertin život měl Brnem blízko k tomu mému, porovnání vyvstalo ještě bolestivěji.

Jedním dechem jsem číst nedokázal. Na můj vkus bylo popisování pocitů až moc. Hodnotím vysoko za pasáže, co fakticky popisují, jak se Brno a okolí postupně měnilo. A taky za pasáže jen lehce naznačené a ponechané ke krutému domýšlení.

I wanted to like this book. I was very interested in the subject matter, but the writing seems erratic. The narrator and style changes are abrupt. I wonder if part of that might be due to the translation. There are sudden pages and pages of events just told to us, with no conversations and sometimes with no direct impact on the characters in the book. I felt like I was having to slog through it and it was slow going. The only reason I finished it was because I wanted to know that happened in the end. It was nice that some of the best writing was towards the end of the book.

Born to a German father & a Czech mother, Gerta along with all ethnic Germans, is expelled from Czechoslovakia after WWII. #Gerta originally published as The Expulsion of Gerta Schnrich is an engrossing novel that tells a painful history into #historicalfiction ; divided into 5 parts this enlightening novel describes a woman’s quest for forgiveness while finding inner strength and empowerment.

The story does get graphic and brutal at places so proceed with caution. There are many characters other than Gerta and her daughter, some go well with the story. This might be triggering for many, but please understand this is a fictional novel about a woman who was affected by Death March. Honestly I wasn’t prepared for this book. Apart from being emotional, the story also taught me a part of history that I never knew before.

I did look into this harrowing part of history and it broke me more! Hence the mini review. Lovers of memoirs and historical fiction would love this book more than me!

Čítanie románu Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch je oveľa pôsobivejšie, keď máte aspoň trochu pochodené Brno. Čo ja aspoň trochu mám. Preto sa mi dej v mysli rozvíjal veľmi živo. Predstavovala som si knižných hrdinov a udalosti vojny na uliciach, po ktorých som sama kráčala nespočetne veľa ráz a bol to o to mrazivejší zážitok.

Táto knižka je extrémne ťažká a ťaživá. Nájdete v nej 400 strán spytovania svedomia, zatracovania, nenávisti, bezprávia, nemožnosti odpustiť, strachu, ubližovania, ponižovania, hľadania vlastnej identity, úzkosti a predovšetkým histórie. Histórie, ktorá sa naozaj odohrala. Už od prvej hodiny dejepisu na túto tému som tušila, že vzťah Čechov a Nemcov na Morave bol veľmi komplikovaný, ale po prečítaní tohto románu uznávam, že slovo komplikovaný je slabý vývar.

Dielo sa miestami čítalo naozaj ťažko, ale určite stojí za to. Veľmi sa mi páčilo vykreslenie postavy Gerty, ktorej bolo v živote toľko ubližované, že stratila vieru v čokoľvek dobré. Jej čierny život plný nespravodlivosti bol v retrospektíve vlastne úplne zbytočný. Lenže čo narobiť so zbytočnosťou vlastnej existencie?

Tę pierwszą powieść Kateřiny Tučkovej, która właśnie ukazała się w świetnym tłumaczeniu Julii Różewicz, musiałam koniecznie przeczytać, tak bardzo podobały mi się przecież jej Boginie z Zitkovej.

Wypędzenie Gerty Schnirch to książka całkiem inna - tematycznie, konstrukcyjnie i językowo, ale także bardzo dobra. Tytułowe wypędzenie odnosi się do wygnania Niemców z Brna, tuż po wojnie, nazywanego berneńskim marszem śmierci. Temat, który bardzo mnie interesuje - wysłuchałam wielu opowieści mojej teściowej i jej koleżanek, które musiały opuścić Prusy Wschodnie, Szczecin, Śląsk. Zawsze w dramatycznych okolicznościach, nigdy dobrowolnie. Tęsknota i trauma ucieczki pozostały w nich na zawsze, podobnie jak w Gercie.

Gerta jest pół-Czeszką, ale nazwisko zawdzięcza znienawidzonemu ojcu-naziście. Czeskie pochodzenie po matce nie wystarcza, by mogła być pełnoprawną Czeszką. Wojna przemyka zresztą obok niej, dorastająca dziewczyna nie interesuje się polityką, chce kochać, uczyć się, beztrosko żyć. Niestety polityka szykuje dla niej wojnę, podczas której nie będzie już obywatelką Brna, tylko Niemką. Najgorsze piekło zacznie się dla niej jednak dopiero po wyzwoleniu Czech - naloty, wegetowanie w schronach, trupy nie będą tak straszne, jak to, co zgotują dla niej sąsiedzi i współobywatele Brna. Mężczyźni i starsi chłopcy niemieckiego pochodzenia zagnani zostaną do obozu, a kobiety i starcy wypędzeni z miasta. Podczas marszu będą dręczeni, bici, zabijani, głodzeni, a przede wszystkim kobiety będą gwałcone. Grupa pracowników jednej z fabryk i Rosjanie nie przepuszczą żadnej z nich. Kresem wędrówki będzie przepełniony obóz, gdzie ludzi dziesiątkuje czerwonka. Gerta ma szczęście, zostanie wybrana wraz z grupą kobiet do pomocy w gospodarstwie rolnym. W ten sposób zamieszkuje u serdecznej, starszej kobiety, dzięki której przetrwa i ona i jej córka. Przetrwanie nie będzie jednak happy endem tej historii - bo fizyczna zdolność do życia nie załatwi traumy, bólu, nie pozwoli zapomnieć okropieństw, przez które przeszła kobieta. Paradoksalnie to miłość do dziecka - owocu gwałtu - da Gercie siłę do życia i znoszenia upokorzeń.

Po Žítkovských bohyních jsem mileráda sáhla po druhém titulu Kateřiny Tučkové. Věděla jsem, že námět knihy je vážný, že to nebude žádné oddychové čtení. A opravdu nebylo. Nejvíce na mě zapůsobila první třetina knížky a pak její závěr. Při čtení popisu násilného vyhnání německých obyvatel z Brna očima Gerty jsem se bezděčně mračila a v mých představách mi naskakovaly až neskutečně kruté 'obrázky', a to i ve chvílích, kdy už jsem několik hodin knížku v ruce nedržela... pochod do Pohořelic (název města pro mě tímto zní zcela jinak...) ve mně skutečně zůstane hodně dlouho... Asi naštěstí pro mě děj zvolnil, když Gerta nebyla v přímém ohrožení a život se jí více méně stabilizoval. Číst si ale o tom, kam se její život ubíral v nečekaných dějových a pocitových detailech bylo neméně zajímavé. Předem jsem neřešila, kam až se děj rozvine, že knížka shrne více než padesát let jejího života a skončí jejím koncem. Ale když o tom teďka přemýšlím, jak jinak by skončila... Ohledně války a jejích následků, ano, je to téma, které mě nadmíru v psané formě zaujalo a tato knížka je toho důkazem. V náznacích popisované hrůzy války... říkám si, když někdo řekne, že si ze všeho nejvíc přeje celosvětový mír, zda má alespoň základní představu o tom, jak je mír cenný... Nemyslím si, že je nutné na vlastní kůži prožít válku, abychom si cenili míru, ale tímto zastávám názor, že by měl každý člověk, skrz souhrn faktických udajů o válce, také zabřednout trochu hlouběji a alespoň jednom za život se vcítit, a to jakýmkoliv způsobem, do lidí, kteří válkou prošli. Já se díky této knížce dozvěděla, jak moc poničené válkou město Brno bylo, jaký byl po válce majetkový galimatyáš, co obnášelo nosit na ruce pásek s černým N a jak díky válce jedna nevinná žena, místo toho, aby si život užívala, ho přežívala, jak celé ty roky po válce nešlo o nic jiného než to přežít, jak díky válce žila nenaplněný a zbytečný život plný nicnesmění a nicnechtění a že pocit štěstí znamenalo být prostě jen smířená... Ano, pro nás je válka jen tragickou pohádkou, historií, ne přítěží a já si to nyní skutečně uvědomila.

„Wypędzenie Gerty Schnirch” opowieść o mało znanym kawałku historii, czyli powojennych losach Niemców zamieszkujących terytorium Czechosłowacji.
Historia Gerty, córki Czeszki i Niemca, niewystarczająco aryjskiej dla ojca nazisty, a jednocześnie naznaczonej stygmatem niemieckiego pochodzenia. Życie tytułowej bohaterki to suma wszystkich nieszczęść świata, a mimo to jej historia jest wiarygodna. Język Tučkovej daleki jest od sentymentalizmu, wiele też pisarka pozostawia wyobraźni czytelnika. Wśród bohaterów drugoplanowych, zarówno Niemców, jak i Czechów nie ma ani jednej postaci, której życie można by uznać za szczęśliwe czy spełnione. Na terenach, gdzie przez pokolenia tożsamość narodowa nie determinowała tego, czy człowiek był dobry czy zły, najpierw naziści i wojna, potem wprowadzanie ustroju komunistycznego, rujnują losy jednostek i międzyludzkie relacje. To jedna z najbardziej pesymistycznych opowieści, jakie czytałam i ze względu na opowiadaną przez Tučkową historię, jak i kreślony przez nią obraz zaniku człowieczeństwa, gdy ofiary zmieniają się w katów. Mocna antywojenna i antynacjonalistyczna powieść.

Je jen málo knížek, které byste dočítali na hlavním nádraží v průchodu v Praze, protože se nemůže dočkat jak to skončí a těch 10 minut na dojít na byt je zatraceně dlouhá doba. Ze začátku přímočaré až příliš "jasné a nepřekvapivé", pak vás ochromí autetičnost, vyzrálé postavy a v závěru obyčejnost hlavních postav, která vám připomene, že by se to mohlo stát komukoliv z nás. Nejsme hrdinové, jen obyčejní lidé. Vytříbený jazyk, bohatý prvorepublikový slovník, osob, kteří nejsou hrdinové, ale obyčejní lidé se špatným osudem. Další knížku od Tučkové radši nečtu, ať si nezkazím iluze. Ne možná jo.

Skvelé. Túto knihu som si po Žitkovských bohyniach a Bielej vode odkladal. Po pár rokoch čo ju mám na poličke, prišiel jej čas a musím len konštatovať, že príbeh je silný, Gerta je výnimočná a láska k Tučkovej potvrdená!
