It's a filler, but quite enjoyable still.
We all knew what this volume was going to be like from the ratings but it's not bad at all.
And yes it's a filler but, the short stories here fill in a little bit about the side characters and their perspective on the events that've happened, which I felt was a nice change of pace.
There's a little bit of romance, a little peek into the underbelly of the world and a sneak peek into the cliffhanger at the end of the last volume, which I enjoyed.
And if you like any of the things mentioned above, you'll like this volume.

2.5/5 Volume 17 was a miss for me. I didn't particularly care for any of the short stories in this collection. None of them were particularly bad but it felt like a bunch of filler I didn't want or need. The stories all tended to get good during the last 10 pages or so of each tale so maybe they would've been better if they were even more condensed as the author likes to over explain things.
1) Mjollime sets out to establish the Four Nations Trade Alliance as well as laying ground work for a Magi-Train system where he runs afoul of gangsters.
2) Velgrynd while traveling different worlds collecting pieces of Ludora's soul stops at a world very similar to that of earth. She get's wrapped up in global politics and a war against The Mystics who are currently trying to take over that world. This story is the largest in the collection but I felt it was terribly long winded and introduces another couple dozen characters that we're never going to see again after this.
3) Caligulio and Minitz are establishing Masayuki's reign as new emperor of the East. We also get more of Caligulio's back story and a little subplot involving his wife and the politics of The Eastern Empire.
4) Raine give's a short recap of the Primal Demon's, how they came to be, and what they're up to now. This was a shorter story but probably the most enjoyable for me.
Bonus) A very short story involving Vester and his personal dilemma keeping information from King Gazel.
We're supposedly heading into the final arc which is a good thing.

This book feels like the calm before the storm: right after a gripping cliffhanger, let's flesh out some stories in the world that are important and a bit untended.
What sort of business is the finance minister, Mjöllmile, up to?
What epic love quest does Velgrind go on?
How do Kalgurio and the bunch from the Empire deal with stability after the war?
What does Rain, who's usually so silent in the main story, think about life?
The reviews gave me the impression the stories wouldn't be relevant to the main thread but they are.
They start out kind of slowly and then get fun closer to the end. I think there's a bit much fluff and had the impression Fuse-sensei is having fun exploring different writing styles xD
Well, I hope with these all in one volume, the final arc will be more focused than othrewise :>

such a tedious..
I am not sure if that’s how light novel works. But I didn’t read even one page completely. I see this as unnecessary explanation for character. Wast of a chapter. My opinion!!

My rating is based on the fact that is a filler volume. It’s truly unnecessary to the storyline. It doesn’t add anything of value. It could have been an extra story. Truly disappointing to think I wasted a purchase on this volume.

The weakest book in the series by far.

A book chock-full of filler.
It has four stories in it to recap side characters lives as the main story progressed. The 1st story was a very slow start and it ended on a high note too quickly. The 2nd story has a lot of mechanics explained to us, but has no stakes to it. On a narrative level it was extremely dull and for a short story dragged on too long. The 3rd story has some plot relevance, and had a touching ending to it. (which was greatly appreciated) The 4th is much like the 1st but with no pay off in the end. Narration was unique which made it better than 2nd. Lastly the 5th bonus story is exactly like the 4th.

A lot better than I thought
Everyone complaining about the short stories made me think this would suck. But it tied in really well. The 2nd one was really good actually. It kind of felt like the spin-offs in the way that they’re official canon stories that don’t fit during the main timeline, but are part of it. The times characters went off and did things, or things were alluded to, that we didn’t get adequate information on bc it would take forever to explain. And here’s the explanation. A lot of really good gems in there of world building and character background too.

Hmmm I didn't really care much about these side stories, the first one was ok, but the rest I just didn't care.
I don't see why make a volume like this, ok it would be difficult to put it in other volumes, but this way was the worst, it didn't felt like a main volume, this could have been a 16.5 instead of 17.

While we don’t move the main plot forward this time, this book of short stories provides some needed background and perspective from some characters that don’t get much usually. Velgrynd’s story is basically a novella and I enjoyed seeing what she gets up to when traveling space-time. Ready for next volume though.

Can be entirely skipped except Rain's part. It has absolutely zero impact on the main story and it's not deserving of calling it Vol. 17, it's more like a Vol 16.5 but streched out too much.
Absolutely boring, it's not even world building, just Velgrynd's travels for the most part. A complete waste of time. You can skip to Vol 18 directly and you won't miss anything.

Felt like a filler chapter, but Fuse still maintains the previous, easy to read style that got me hooked from Volume 6 onwards. Useful information to have on hand before moving onto Vol. 19 concerning the Empire and Velgrynd in particular, too.

5/10. A volume of short stories. As always, quite boring most of the time. The story of Raine talking directly to us was especially boring. That said, I am still waiting for the angels.

After reading and reflecting on this book I realized that although this may not be my favorite book in the series it is still an excellent book. At first, I didn’t think I would like this book because it was all about side characters instead of the protagonist, but Fuse made me interested in them. I think this book deserves 5 stars for many reasons so let me talk to you about this book.
But first a summary: This volume is all about side characters and what they get up to when they aren’t with the protagonist. This novel mainly follows two characters Velgrynd and Caligulio. In Velgrynd’s story, she is looking for the souls of her lover when she stumbles onto a familiar but different planet. This planet is similar to Earth but slightly different because it has magic and monsters. When she arrives on the planet the humans are fighting a race of monsters called yohma so she decides to help them out while also trying to become a more caring person. In Caligulio’s story, he is facing up to his past as he strives to rebuild his Empire.
I enjoyed how Fuse characterized Velgrynd, a side character, who in the previous books was brutal and the protagonist's enemy. Her character arc in this book is her becoming kinder and holding back her anger. Although Vengrynd did change in this aspect most of her character didn’t change but this book gives us her point of view changing my whole perspective on her. Caligulio, an enemy general, is a side character who also used to be the enemy of the protagonist who, after losing the war, goes back to his kingdom to reflect on his past actions. Caligulio has to rebuild his beloved empire while also battling his past. Both characters’ development is crucial in exploring the novel’s themes of forgiveness, controlling emotions, and being not as prideful.
One theme in the novel is forgiveness. The story illustrates how being able to forgive past enemy’s mistakes can lead to them helping you out in the future. Another theme is the ability to control your emotions. Even when someone is getting on your nerves stay calm and don’t lash out. The novel's last theme is the danger of being too prideful. As Calugulio reflects on his awful past you learn how dangerous having too much pride can be.
Fuse’s writing style is like no other authors I have seen. His writing style lets you know what every character thinks by switching perspectives constantly. Being able to hear every character’s thoughts contributes to the story. Fuse's writing style also constantly makes me laugh because we know what one character thinks about something, which can be very different from how another character does. Even in this book about side characters Fuse’s world-building skills are incredible and are further enhanced by his writing style.
Like I said in the beginning I didn’t think I would have liked this book. I thought this book was going to be a 3 stars maybe 4 stars but the book proved me wrong. Like they say never judge a book by its cover. I recommend not skipping this book if you have already read all the books in the series before this one and if you haven’t read any books in the series I recommend you start the series. It is a great book if you like a funny story with great world-building.
