To most people, suburbia is synonymous with good school districts, manicured lawns, and friendly neighbors. But you can never really tell what’s hiding behind those white picket fences and smiling faces.
I mean, we all have secrets. The kid down the street steals lawn gnomes. The woman on the corner is having an affair. And me? I’m a murderer. At least…that’s what everyone thinks.
Because that’s the other thing about the suburbs. Rumors spread like wildfire. Handsome detectives start poking around. Houses explode. You know…the usual.
Yes, I have secrets. But so does everyone else. Welcome to suburbia. I’m one of the smiling faces waving from my front porch. Don’t you trust me?
Ivy Smoak is the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon #1 bestselling author of The Hunted Series. Her books have sold over 4 million copies worldwide.
When she's not writing, you can find Ivy binge watching too many TV shows, taking long walks, playing outside, and generally refusing to act like an adult. She lives with her husband in Delaware.
This was a great read, twisted and unique just like I like them and though this for me didn't have quite the impact of its predecessor in this loosely connected series it was still a really enjoyable experience. So first loved the title it really caught my attention and I would have wanted to read it for that reason alone. I also thought the cover on this one was especially eye-catching. This was a standalone read that is very loosely connected to "The Truth in our lies". I say connected but basically, all that means is this starts at the end of that book and it is set in the same town and neighbourhood. I myself would have prefered if this was more connected to the other but that's just my own personal preference. This was about totally different characters and if I had to describe where this fits in terms of genres I would say this was a romantic suspense / Psychological thriller. More slanted towards the psychological as this was all about the intrigue and the romantic scenes were more PG 13. Told in dual POV this story featured Violet who lives out in the woods with her son Zeke and cop Tucker. The whole town whispers about Violet finding her strange and unusual. She definitely has secrets and when a local detective Tucker starts to dig into her past believing her connected to a case and then later starts to fall for her refusing to let her push him away well let's just hope for his sake the rumours concerning Violets tendencies are just that fiction. This also dealt with OCD and compulsions which was also really fascinating. This really was such an easy read that kept me entertained throughout. An observation from my camp I really didn't like the friend Damien he was such a judgemental idiot and thought Tucker should have told him to shut his trap. Lastly, I adored that finale. I voluntary reviewed a copy of Sweet Like a Psycho.
Sweet Like a Psycho is the second book in The Secrets of Suburbia series. The first book is The Truth in My lies. This book is sort of a cross between romantic suspense and a psychological thriller. The author says that this book can be read as a standalone, but characters from The Truth in My Lies are mentioned.
The narrators of this book are Violet and Tucker (1st person POVs). This story takes place right after the events at the end of The Truth in My Lies.
I read The Truth in My Lies. But I did not realize that I would need to remember the ending of that book in order to better understand this next book. I remembered a lot, but I really think that re-reading the ending gave me a better understanding of the beginning of Sweet Like a Psycho.
I like books where the lead character is a stalker or crazy. Violet was an interesting character. The whole town thought that she was crazy. They called her the crazy lady who lived in the woods. And many of them thought that she committed horrible crimes.
The beginning of the book connects to the end of the last book. It was interesting to see Adeline mentioned again.
Tucker is a detective. He thinks that Violet is hiding something. Their interactions did push the story. But I don't know that I understand why he felt the way he did about her.
I really wanted a lot more mystery in this book. I wish that the author had really pursued the connection between the two books a lot more (this one and The Truth in My Lies). I would have loved for the characters from the first book and that mystery to be the main focus of this book. I feel centering the whole book around what Violet was hiding was just not enough of a mystery for me.
This book definitely had some crazy revelations. I loved the idea of the book. But I just wanted more. The last chapters were the strongest.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Blurb: To most people, suburbia is synonymous with good school districts, manicured lawns, and friendly neighbors. But you can never really tell what’s hiding behind those white picket fences and smiling faces.
I mean, we all have secrets. The kid down the street steals lawn gnomes. The woman on the corner is having an affair. And me? I’m a murderer. At least…that’s what everyone thinks.

I went into this book with the expectation that I would be disappointed, because after the bombshell that was the ending of The Truth In My Lies, I thought it would be impossible to follow it up. And for once, I was wrong! Sure, I didn't like it quite as much as the first book, but it was still really, really good.
This book is very difficult to rate because I didn’t connect with the characters at all. The psycho thing in this book is nonexistent. I had such high expectations as I really loved The Truth in My Lies by this author. This book is definitely not on that level. Way below.
I should start this review with an apology to the author. I feel as though I'm insulting her by only being able to rate this book five stars. If I could do a hundred I would in a heartbeat. So I'm very sorry Ivy Smoak that I can't give you the amount of Stars this book truly deserves.
This book just became my all time favorite book (sorry Hunted Series). It was everything I could ever hope for in a romantic suspense book.
The writing was phenomenal (no surprise from Ivy). Every detail or event in this book ran smoothly. My mental movie played perfectly! I'm the annoying person who watches a movie or reads a book for the first time and can tell you how it ends in the first five minutes. However I could not predict this book.
The characters were COMPLETELY loveable. I fell in love with all of them right away.
I totally recommend this book to EVERYONE. You would have to be monster to not love it.
I don’t know where to begin! Ivy this was amazing. Violet has lived a tough life. Taken all the insults and rumors that is said about her being the crazy lady on the hill. She lives in the woods close to the lake. Everyone in town calls her a murderer and psycho. I was caught up in the book from the beginning. She always kept everyone at arms length. One night an explosion blew up a house and a woman was seen running away. Detective Reed listens to one of the neighbors and goes in the woods. He runs into a house in the woods. He knocks on the door and Violet opens the door. He thinks she is woman who blew up the house but discovers it’s not her. She tries to push him away when all he wants to do is get close. She has to keep her secrets hidden when all he wants to do is uncover them. Her main secret was he didn’t expect her to have a son. She loves her son Zeke more than anything. He is teased and picked on because of all the rumors about his mother. Detective Reed really falls for her but wants to peel back all her layers. Ivy I couldn’t put it down. Things are not as what they seem.

Sweet Like a Psycho by Ivy Smoak is the second book in The Secrets of Suburbia series, the first book is' The Truth in My lies', but this can be a standalone book. Violet and her son Zeke live in the woods due to the town believing she is a Psycho and she just doesn't want to deal with the rumors. Becoming used to living like this she settles into the life she knows now. But then Detective Tucker starts coming around asking questions. Tucker is strangely drawn to Violet and wants to clear her name. This was a good drama romance.
Everyone says Violet is strange and weird. She knows what they say about the woman in the old house, but as long as she and her son Zeke can live in relative peace, she doesn't really care. But then a house in her suburb explodes and suddenly a detective, Tucker, starts investigating her, the strange lady in the woods. Will it end badly the way it did for Adeline (The Truth in My Lies)?
Whew, I gotta tell you, this Secrets of Suburbia series is crazy twisty! Violet is such an endearing character, I couldn't help but feel for her. I knew there was something crazy in her past that she was hiding from, I just didn't realize it was quite so bad and when it came out...damn. But the best part of the whole story was the ending. Talk about nuts. I hope there's more to come in this twisted series, because it's fantastic so far.
Violet has tried her best to isolate herself from the town but no matter what she does she can't escape all the rumors that she is a murderer. Her poor son even gets bullied at school for it. In comes a sexy detective to prove that she is guilty of something but soon he finds himself trying to prove her innocence.
I felt so bad for Vi, her OCD is controlling her ability to blend in the town. But the mystery is did she do it? This story had me trying to figure it out but the twist at the end had me like 😱😱😱. I hope this isn't the end because I'm curious to see if Tucker will uncover the truth and what is he gonna do about it.
It was different I liked the fact that it was in the same town and timeline as the first book truth in My Lies however it’s different I was stuck between 3 and 4 stars only because of the way it ends however it was a fast read for me filled with secrets a few twist and turns then there’s the funny parts with her son I really enjoyed that part a lot.
Overall it’s a good mystery it does have some triggers so make sure to check them I had the audiobook so I’m not sure if it’s in the physical/ebook
So many twists in this story! Violet is such a complicated character . Detective Tucker Reed gets close to her in order to learn the truth of her past. In the process he falls in love with her and her young son. She confesses partially the events of the past . Just when it all appears to come together there is a twist you don' see coming. Loved it!
Twisted web of lies oh my! This was another mind blowing book from the Secrets of Suburbia series. The title couldn't be more perfect as I loved the sweet little psycho and was completly absorbed in her world through the whole book. With all the twists and lies, you won't see or expect what's coming next!
Violet is a girl that lives secluded in the woods with her son Zeke. She grown used to being called Psycho and murderer so much that she hates leave her house, she likes to keep to herself. Then there's Tucker, a laid back detective. He is infatuated with Violet, but has heard rumors. He's on a mission to prove everyone wrong as he's falling in love with her. That's when secrets and lies slowly to spilling and unravelling.
I absolutely loved this book and seriously hope there will be many more books in this series. This series is very original, unique and most importantly unpredictable. Always remember...sometimes nothing is what is appears.
From the first page to the last, This book kept you guessing and wanting to know more. Because of this, I was unable to put it down. Did Violet do it or is she pulling the wool over Detective Reed's eyes? Once again Ivy has written a riveting story that you won't want to miss.
What a great book to read. So many emotions played out in this book and I felt them all. Not a typical love story, but oh so well worth the reading. I never wanted to put it down. The ending had me flabbergasted . Put this book on your want to read list, it will be worth it.
So... did I read a completely different book than everyone else? What the heck did I miss?
I know this is the second in the series -- I have not read the first, but it was noted this could be read as a standalone so I went ahead with it. Depending on the story, the author typically does a good job catching up the reader with important parts from the previous story. Obviously, it's more meaningful to read then all in order to get the whole effect, but sometimes I stumble on a book that sounds interesting and don't always realize it's part of a series, or am just interested in the one book itself.
Had I read some of the reviews before jumping into this one, I would have realized a main event from the previous book made its way into this one, with no result to it. This sounded like a frustration from those who had read the previous book. For me, I was annoyed the whole time because I kept trying to figure out how the was connected to Violet and Tucker. (News flash, it wasn't). Reading reviews suggests this may be the author's writing style, which I don't love. It's one thing for a cliffhanger, but at least answer it or give some sort of resolution in the next books or somewhere in the series itself.
The next thing that bothered me was the conversations with the 5 year old, Zeke. I do not have children, so if someone who does have children who has read this book -- Do 5 year olds really talk like this? I had to remind myself multiple time of the kid's age because it sounded like a way more adult conversation than I would think is normal. (Again, I know kids are smart, and maybe due to Zeke's upbringing and Violet's past, he needed to "grow up" a bit more). I personally didn't find it believable.
My biggest issue was the character of Tucker. What a moron. I hated everything about him. He apparently was really bad at his job (not sure why, although maybe it was because he never listened to his boss but also never was reprimanded); he continued to visit Violet under false pretenses (but tried to rationalize it with himself); there was a lot of "Well, she wants me to leave, but I'm going to stay because I can tell she wants me to." And I guess to be fair, there were a lot of mixed singles coming from Violet, so maybe they both sucked in that area. I HATED the whole scene about going to the pet store around noon and how stressful it was for Violet because of the town's opinion of her -- Tucker knows she has OCD and she stated more than once how uncomfortable she was out and about during that time of day, and he wouldn't get it through his head -- he purposely went the wrong direction on the way to the pet store, and kept pestering her about going out to lunch, when, AGAIN, she said she wasn't comfortable. His whole "I want to save her" aspect got really old, really quickly.
For the most part, I actually liked Violet's narrative and her perspective. That alone was what kept me reading. I didn't love the reveal even though you could see it was going in that direction. I guess maybe I don't understand her reasoning of why, at that moment, she decided she had to tell Tucker the truth. I mean, sure, that's the way to go, but it just seemed very out of left field.
Unlike other reviews, I didn't quite hate the ending, although it did seem rushed and now I realize there isn't anything else to learn about them in the next book. It is very opened ended so you can sort of take it how you'd like it -- do they end up happily ever after? Do past events repeat themselves? Who knows?
Based on other reviews, I'm in the minority, so take this review with a grain of salt. It sounds like this may not be the strongest book from this author, so I would be interested in reading at least one other book by her. I guess we'll see if that happens.
I don’t even know where to start with how this book made me feel. I read the other book based off this location and loved it. It had such amazing suspense that I was hopeful that this one would hold the same treasure. It did that and so much more.
This author vivid imagination had me hooked from the first chapter and kept me captivated even hours after reading it. The suspense was simply amazing. The bread crumbs slowly put things together, then more little clues, but by the end it was still like.... mind blown.
I want to talk so much about this book but no spoilers. I will say that I loved Violet, Tucker and adorable Zeke. Zeke was truly amazing an amazing kid. Through out the story he kept the story from becoming to overwhelming. He lighted the plot.
I really hope we get more in this series soon. It wasn’t a cliffhanger, but there is so much left open. Not only from this book, but even from the first book. We got small clues on that too in this book. Not enough to drive me to madness but enough to keep me hooked and wanting more. A lot more! 5 stars #2OCCJD
Sometimes I think that Ivy Smoak is an evil genius. The way her brain works to keep these stories intertwined are enticing and so engaging.
Sweet like a Psycho will keep you on your toes and keep you guessing the whole way. As soon as you think you have it figured out, Ivy takes it in a new direction.
The emotions that I felt while reading this book were intense and changed from moment to moment. It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster.
I’m always one for reading anything that’s linked to a book but you really don’t HAVE to read Truth in my Lies to read this. It was just nice that they were connected, though I was so engrossed in the story that I missed the connection the first read through. 🤦♀️
*** I received an advanced copy and chose to review it *** ** 100% spoiler-free review ** * 5 stars *
Ivy Smoak once again brings the crazy in her latest novel Sweet Like a Psycho and readers won't want to put it down. This story is mysterious, suspenseful and exciting and just when you think you have the plot worked out, Smoak throws you in a different direction. Violet is a very layered character. There are many sides to her and it was hard to figure out which one was the real Vi. Smoak kept me guessing right up until the end with her and her story! Told from a dual POV, readers will get to see how the story plays out from both Violet and Tucker. This story will take you on a wild ride and when it's over, it'll leave you with the answers but many other questions as well. I loved this story! 5 stars
What is Ivy Smoak doing to me? She literally tore me up with The Truth In My Lies, but Sweet Like A Psycho? Holy shit! Violet is used to the rumors, "crazy" "monster" "murderer". Doesn't mean they don't hurt. She stays isolated with her son, Zeke, and stays to fight off the dark secrets she carries. Along comes a detective, and all her work at hiding behind the crazy stigma is for nothing.
Violet has lived a traumatic life, with no one to help her. Even her adult life sucks. Tucker is suspicious but quickly falls under the spell that is Violet. As they fall in love, secrets start rearing their ugly heads.
Get ready to be completely mind fecked again. I'm completely hooked on this suburban neighborhood and want to know all the secrets. Sometimes men aren't the only monsters around.
WHOOOOOO man. This series. It's so good! If you like twists and turns and suspense and the unexpected READ THIS. (This book can stand alone but linked to The Truth in My Lies.)
Violet lives as a recluse with her son Zeke. There's some really nasty rumors about her in town and she's over the harassment. Something happens nearby which brings Detective Tucker Reed to her doorstep. That's where the rollercoaster plummets into the first drop and it doesn't let up until the end. There's too much I can't talk about without spoiling anything.
You want to read this. You want to get wrapped up in these pages and shout WTF at your book or device. Trust me.
Absolutely loved this book! If I could give more then five stars I would. It sucks you in from the first page. The characters and there back stories are amazing. It is definitely a must read!!!!
First of all, I love the name of this. Second, this neighborhood is all messed up and full of secrets! Violet is hiding out in a house in the woods, and the whole town has been talking about her for years. Tucker is a not very good detective, but he does ask a LOT of questions. I hope there are just more and more stories and that everyone who lives there has something to hide. It's fun! Maybe that makes me a little crazy, too. The pace in this book is a little slow, but the story is interesting and I liked the end.
First off, I will say that the title was perfect for this book. Second, I loved that we got both Violet and Tucker's point of views. It really made the crazy messed up story even more better. This book will keep you up late with all the twist and turns this book has. It appears to be this quiet and normal suburban neighborhood but it is anything but that. This town knows how to spread rumors that's for sure. With this I'm not sure who I feel more sorry for Violet or her son Zeke? Both are getting bullied by rumors. Zeke can't go to school without getting picked on or called Zeke the Freak. My heart broke for him. He was so young and kids can be so mean. Violet does what she can to protect him from the town and the rumors but he's already heard them. Tucker comes into their lives after a explosion in the neighborhood. Him being a detective, he is determined to find out what happened and why. He's new to town and has heard rumors about Violet from his best friend and the neighborhood she lives in. He tries his best to get to know her and find out for sure if they are real or not. Violet does her best to fight him off but the more time she spends with him, she finds herself falling for him. My heart seriously broke for Violet. She lost her dad at a young age. Then her mom meets a new guy,she goes crazy and can't protect her daughter anymore. Then in a day, Violet's whole world falls apart and then she is the most talked about and stared at in the town. Rumors fly about that night but nobody but Violet knows what truly happens. This book kept my attention all through the entire book. It was hard to put down cause I had to know what happened next and what really happened that night. It was a crazy head spin honestly but there were also times of sweet and funny moments. Those were when she was with Tucker or Tucker was with her son. I seriously loved reading this book and need more!!!
Whoa! What the ever lovin' Hades did I just read?!! I thought the last dark psychological romance I read had blown my mind, but this book obliterated it! I’m stunned. Dumbfounded. Words fail me. It’s not creepy, evil and depraved, but it’s a mind scramble, all the same. Maybe all the more so for the moments of sweetness, tenderness and humor thrown in, and the compassion it evokes in the reader.
Smoak is quite the clever conniver as she leads us down the path, lulls us into a perfectly nice sense of security with an explanation guaranteed to garner the greatest amount of sympathy possible and then sweeps the rug right out from under us. She leave us with dozens of unanswered questions, although I wouldn’t say this is a cliffhanger because Violet and Tucker's romance is secured and there is a resolution to their situation, but I’m dying for anything more to find out what the future holds for these characters!
Not only do we have a hunky police detective with a big heart, but an adorable little boy with a love for reptiles. The really intriguing element, however, is the heroine who is the town pariah with OCD tendencies, yet the tough cop sees clear to the heart of her. Smoak does touch on some issues that may be difficult for some readers, so those who are more easily disturbed may want to proceed with caution.
I have no idea what’s next from this author, but I’ll be stalking closely so I don’t miss anything. I usually like light-hearted romance with lots of laughs and tugs at the heartstrings, but writing like this is just too delicious to pass up. Brava, Ms. Smoak. Five giant WTF stars!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

If your looking for a twisted but unique read then you do not want to miss Sweet Like A Psycho. Ivy Smoak delivered a story that will have you reading from the first page to the last without laying the book down. If you have read Truth In My Lies, then your are going to see some familiar people. If you haven't do not fret this book was made to be a standalone. However I will say that Truth In My Lies is equally amazing and one you will want to go back and read. Violet is one of the most interesting characters I have ever read. I don't want to give any of the story away from this book. Iwent tinot it basically blind and I think that is the best way for you guys to do it too. It is a must read in my book and one you do not want to miss.
If you love a good suspense/mystery with a little romance thrown in, then Ivy Smoak has done a pretty fantastic job at creating just the right book for you! Violet and her son Zeke live tucked away in the woods, in a home that most people would assume was abandoned. Violet enjoyed her peace and quiet, and was doing her best to care for herself and her son. One day, Violet was outside visitng an area that held strong memories for her, and whilst there, she suddenly hears a noise that she thought had to have been a gunshot. This gunshot noise, which is soon after determined to be an explosion of one of the homes nearby, is what lead to her no longer being able to remain in her abandoned looking home, living a life outside of the watchful eye of her nosey neighbors and their cookie cutter homes. Because of the home explosion so close to Violet's home, Detective Tucker Reed comes to investigate. Because I don't want to give away anything extra that may be considered a spoiler, I would like to end the short explanation of what starts this brilliant novel right here. I think Ivy has done a wonderful job in keeping her readers addicted. Once you pick this book up, you can't help but want to know more and more. I find myself having a really hard time putting it down. When it comes to suspense and mystery, Ivy has woven an intriguing tale into these pages, and I highly recommend everyone giving this book a chance. I think you will all find yourself happy that you gave it a chance!
