Spoilers/ Review for My Zombie Sweetheart 💘🧟 by @kit_romero
.
MZS opens with an introduction to Buddy Day and Suzie Palmer, ten year old friends who can't be together because of the world around them. Years later, Buddy and Suzue have gone their own ways, and Suzie is with Danny "Dash" Domico. But one night when a meteor shower strikes Woodvale, and Suzie is murdered by Dash. But wait. The story doesn't end there! Suzie Palmer returns and it's up to Buddy to help her whilst Woodvale descends into chaos...
.
Back in February, over at @theindiehorrorbookclub we read this one. It felt right for the time and fitted with @the.reading.chameleon 's challenge nicely! It was my third outing with Christopher and I looked forward to a trip to Woodvale
.
I do enjoy Christopher's style! It has a very nice charm to it. I liked the 1950s style and setting to this one. Initially I struggled a bit to click with the supporting cast but clicked with Suzie and Buddy straight away. Both fantastic leads! The way the story builds both their characters really works. I liked how we got a slightly more human zombie in this one and not just a mindless creature rampaging. That's what sets Suzie apart I feel. There's interesting elements that I won't talk about on here owing to huge spoilers but let's say the intrigue builds. Finishing with a killer ending this is one fantastic debut novel by Christopher!
.
Overall 4.5/5 🧟💘
But how about you guys? Have you read My Zombie Sweetheart? What did you think of it?

This book is like if you mix a million different kinds of ice cream, then some maple syrup, and a ton of toothpaste. It’s really sweet, really gross, and really ooey gooey. I say this in the best possible way. I sit here holding the book badger I’ve finished it trying to think of the last time I’ve read a book that made me say “Ewwwwww… That is Kinda sweet though…” as much as this has. Heck, even a book that made me say that once. The obvious thing you want me to explain on is the sweetness. There’s a great love story here, I’m not spoiling anything because the cover literally says “romance” so get over it. The romance in Christoper Robertson’s book felt so genuine, so heartfelt, so nauseatingly adorable; these are characters having a love story you wish you could have. Is that to say it’s almost a fantasy romance? No. The book takes place in the fifties and uses the romance as not just a plot to make people like me get all in their feels, but there are some real issues addressed here. I always associate “Zombie” media with having some form of social or political commentary, the good ones do anyway(thanks George!) and Robertson doesn’t shy away from addressing some issues that were touchy in the era the book is set, and sadly still today. I’ve set this book up as a boring romance novel with some sort of deep meaning haven’t I? I’m sorry, let me tell you about how absolutely batshit insane crazy this book also is. For as heavy as the social commentary hits, for as pure and sweet as the romance is, there is also a very well done light hearted feel to the writing. Personally, I am a huge fan of setting up each chapter like a scene from movie; I genuinely felt like this pulled me into the scene more. The horror parts of this book are wild in the best possible way. Think Reanimator or Return of the Living Dead on a double date with Night of the Creeps or Slither. I had fun, I thought deeper about the state of the world, I said “awwwweee”, and most importantly, I couldn’t stop turning the pages. K thx.

A gory unique horror novel that centres around a zombie-alien apocalypse with teenage heartbreak at its core. Couldn’t put this down! If you’re a fan of horror fuelled gore you will love this!

My Zombie Sweetheart is 50s nostalgia, zombie-alien apocalypse and teenage heartbreak put into a blender and set on high. It’s fun and sweet until it’s not—until it’s emotionally wrenching, gore-tastic, cinematically explosive, let’s turn this shit up—and I am HERE FOR IT.

Christopher Robertson does a fantastic job on this one. I most enjoyed the cinematic style of his writing—similar to reading a movie script, with all the classic fades and pulls and cuts. The story moves effortlessly, and you are quickly absorbed in the town of Woodvale with two leads you not only root for, but end up absolutely adoring. Buddy and Suzie, you have my heart.

The way I see it, this is an eighties horrormovie with a fifties setting, written in 2020 and I love it!

Remember the days, black and white movies, a drive-in, buckets of popcorn and smooching with your misses or mister? Not me, but I’m sure a lot of you might remember. (For me it was a sofa, eighties movies and some candy. And no smooching 🥺😂)

But think of those days, when a creature from a black lagoon (it was black and white, the hell do I know the colour of the water?) lifted its arms (gills?) And try and reach its victim? Or when Romero brought us the first zombies in 1969, where the ghouls lifted their arms and try to grab their victims? (See a theme there?)

Well what I’m trying to say is… this is the feeling Christopher Robertson brings to the table with MZS! We are reading (watching) a movie from yonder days… but for me it was also a call back to the eighties, with a fifties setting (or a remake from a movie from that decade)! Movies like Night of the Creeps, The Thing or The Blob spring to mind…

I read Virgin Night first but I urge to you read Robertson's books in release order. Not only does Woodvale make a cameo in our trip to Cherry Lake with some mild spoilers, MZS also shows the author as a fledging filmmaker - he really hones his craft in his later book. Nonetheless, this is a whirlwind of a ride from the title screens to the credits rolling. Robertson has a way of making you fall in love with even the most side of characters, and then gleefully ripping your heart out as he cruelly murders them. (Is that a spoiler for a zombie book?). No one is safe in a Terrorscope novel, and this had all the hallmarks of a great Robertson story. Fast-paced and gory throughout, the characters are fleshed out, and the writing witty and gripping.

Rom, com, and, of course, zom. Did I mention there are aliens too. How? - you ask. Well, you'll have to visit Woodvale to find out!

I love Christopher’s writing style. This was a wonderful homage to the 1950’s. Diners, drive-ins, zombies, love and loss. It’s got it all. The characters are endearing and you find yourself rooting for them, especially Buddy. I just wanted to give him a hug and make everything okay for him. Absolutely loved reading MZS.

I didn't expect to like this book, but unexpectedly I love it!

It's a perfect mix of 50s B-movie horror, friendship, and heartache with well crafted characters that the author makes you care for even if they are only side players.

I highly recommend you try it!

I have to say I was very confused at first but as I kept reading I realised this book is not supposed to be taken too seriously. It's a little shot out to 50s and 80s horror, it's cheesy and it's romantic. Now, I always say romance is my least favourite genre but when you add flesh eating parasitic zombies to it, I'd always read it 🤣

This is definitely Young Adult oriented with references us "older" folks will appreciate. I really enjoyed the parts where zombies attack. However, there were few parts that repeated themselves, not that it was too much or too distracting, just a little predictable at times. But as I said, if you take the plot too seriously, you're ruining the fun of it.

Anyway, I also appreciate the "Black boy falls in love with White chick and everyone goes crazy over it". It's not easy to introduce topics like that and it could go very awkward, but this one worked for the plot and for the romance aspect of it.

I definitely think this is a great book to start indie horror journey with without risking being shocked or sad, and again, it's really perfect for younger audiences (not that young tho, look what happened to us kids that grew up with horror from an early age 🤣🤣).

The day dawns and we find our #bookstagrammer smugly thinking about how he's finished My Zombie Sweetheart in perfect time to post a review on Valentine's Day.
The latest readalong with @theindiehorrorbookclub is a romance! With horror! And zombies!

Cut to many hours later. A room strewn with balls of paper ripped from a notebook. Thrown about in despair. Failed attempts to write a decent review.
How to convey the greatness of this book without spoilers?
1950's small town America. A drive-in movie on the page. High school problems. Racial tensions. A cast of believable characters in a B Movie come to life.

Cut to more hours and many cups of coffee later. Do I mention the aliens?
I need to talk about the main characters.

Flashback. Reading the book. Falling in love with Buddy and Suzie. They're sweet on each other but racial difference is keeping them apart. Suzie's off on a date with the high school sports hero instead. Oh, how I hate him already. I hope Buddy and Suzie can find a way to be together.

Cut back to now. Thinking about how a zombie infestation really gets in the way of a teenage romance.
When I write the review I must remember to get across how exciting the plot is. The author takes no prisoners. No character is safe. Anyone could become a zombie.

Total carnage will ensue. Thrills. Spills. Bloodshed. Gory deaths. It's horror, but damn, it's fun. A thrill ride. A favourite horror flick that's never been made.

Oh, and I need to mention how satisfying the ending is as well.

Ok. Now, how do I start my review? Wait. What do you mean I'm out of room? Of for fu.....

Fade to Black.

Great read and hopefully Audible pick for broadcast

I'm a super fan of horror, drive-ins theaters, and comics. This book pays homage to all of these things without that leave to beaver lens filter that many people have of that time and genres works. I love that the author handles this in a way that pays respect to those who enjoyed this type of thing but can at times be reminded of the real world horror stories of that period. I want my horror to be real scary not scary real. I look forward to this as an ongoing series.

Robertson hits a home-run with My Zombie Sweetheart! An alien-zombie apocalypse in tradition of sci-fi movies/comics from the 1950s. If you love cinematically written novels that are clever, well thought out and features fully developed characters with amazing leads, you will be an instant fan of this author. While it reads lighthearted and a bit wholesome there’s plenty of blood and gore to please horror fans and sci-fi geeks alike with the threat steaming from outer space.

I can gush all day long about how amazing this book is. Buddy and Suzie are a pair of memorable characters that had me invested in their relationship from the start. Issues of racism are addressed and my heart broke for Buddy when he’s told that black boys and white girls shouldn’t be “friendly” with each other, but I was still rooting for them all the way! On top of it being a love story and second chances, the sci-fi aspect was absolutely creepy! Mind-controlling ants?! Ahhhh!

I HIGHLY recommend you go and read this. It’s my second book by the author following The Cotton Candy Massacre and they’ve both been five star reads. I honestly can’t get enough of the well crafted storytelling paired with its own Spotify playlist. It really feels like I’m watching a movie, I immediately get pulled in and see and feel everything around me. It’s very cool when an author has the talent to pull you into his world, it’s magic! I’ve found a new favorite author and I can’t wait to get transported into his other worlds.

Really felt like watching a 50s zombie film and fun to read. The writing style was odd, like the author was providing audio description of a film which made it harder to connect to the characters

2.5 rounded up

I’ve seen lots of rave reviews for My Zombie Sweetheart, both here and from several people who read it with the indie horror book club, so this could very well be an ‘it’s not the book, it’s me’ situation. While there were several things I did appreciate, overall it just fell flat for me.

I found the characters likable and I thought writing in a screenplay style was a nice change. I also liked the inclusion of a romantic storyline in a horror plot, and what horror fan doesn’t love zombies??

When I’m reading a book, I don’t try to notice issues with grammar or sentence structure. I realize editing can be a large cost and that editors don’t catch everything. Unfortunately, I found myself distracted because of those issues.

As I say anytime a book doesn’t work for me, please don’t let this prevent you from trying it. Readers respond differently to books depending on so many things and one of my favorite things about reading is seeing different perspectives.

A romantic sci-fi horror themed story taking place in 1950's America that's a very fun read and a fantastic first book for author Christopher Robertson! You'd think the author grew up here with how good he is at portraying the culture and feel of the time periods that his books take place in. From The Cotton Candy Massacre taking place in the 80's to My Zombie Sweetheart in the 50's, this Scottish Dr. Frankenstein of an author nails it each time.

First off, definitely listen to the playlist he made for this book! The QR code at the beginning of his books that take you to a curated soundtrack is an awesome touch and the one for this book is my favorite! They help put you even more in that 50's feel and I find myself listening to the playlist even after I finished this book, its that good.

The characters in this story are very endearing (well, most of them. Looking at you, Dash.) And even the ones who aren't still have more going on with them and they aren't just cartoonishly evil. With a title like "My Zombie Sweetheart" you can expect there to be some sort of outbreak but the way it was done here had a bit of a unique spin on it that harkens back to those 50's sci-fi horror flicks.

The romance here was something I wasn't expecting to latch on to so much. Buddy Day and Suzie Palmer are great protagonists that each have their own trauma and motivations, its hard not to root for them and hope they get out okay. Of course, this is a Terrorscope production so you can't even count on that.

Felt a wide array of emotions while reading this, it even had me tearing up near the end. Absolutely worth the price of admission to the drive-in.

This was literally everything I want in a romantic zombie story. I expected this to be good, but I have to say it exceeded my expectations. As usual, I really enjoy the movie-esque feel to Christopher's novels, along with the playlists, pictures, and chapter titles. It's gory and action-packed, but there are also loveable characters with a sweet little romance. I loved the backstory to the zombies and how that whole situation played out. It was very creative. I also ADORED the flashbacks to Buddy and Suzie as children and how sweet and innocent their friendship was. I was totally invested in this relationship. I loved how this made me think of all the old horror movies from this time period, including Them (which I feel like I've never heard of anyone knowing about that film before) and The Blob. I also got little vibes of It! Came from Outer Space and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Very nostalgic of my childhood, since my dad grew up around that time watching those movies and I grew up with a love (and fear) of those as well because of him.

Also, I will post only one spoiler because I feel like it's not a big deal and it's important to some people...Eddie the dog survives ❤️❤️ which I appreciated because every scene with him gave me extreme anxiety. Eddie was also a very good boy and I loved his addition to the book as well.

This is definitely one of my new favorite zombie books, particularly one that is more of a romantic nature. I feel like it has a little something for everyone in it.

When I first discovered Christopher Robertson and his books I knew immediately that I had to read everything. The synopsis for My Zombie Sweetheart seemed like everything I was looking for, being a fan of horror, zombies, science fiction and popcorn horror. I was not disappointed. I loved how the book read like a movie, fading in and out of scenes, and stayed true to the idea of 50s horror/sci-fi movies. If you’re also a fan of Riverdale and all it’s weirdness you’ll definitely love this. I fell I love with the characters (and hated some with a passion too). I
Can’t wait to catch up on all Christopher’s other books. I have high hopes!

A really fun take on the zombie story, in a 50s B-movie tale full of heart, love, a cool dog, and bug-eyed bloodthirsty chompers!

I’ve read a bunch of Kit’s stuff now so it was fun going back to the start. His cinematic style of writing has definitely become more refined in the years since, and his confidence has improved in general, but this is still an impressive start.

While I enjoyed the zombies, and the ensuing blood, guts and chaos, it was the lead family being Black in 1959 America that most hooked me. Kit gave enough to show that was the real horror of this story, while also not floating away from the comic book craziness of the piece too.

The characters were fun, the action was squelchy, and it was a breezy, bloody read. And, for this certified non-fan of zombie stuff, it felt fresh and original…particularly the inner workings of the horde. Bonus point from me for making me care about a zombie story!

Another phenomenal book by Robertson... I'm embarrassed it took me so long to get to it! This story takes the zombie apocalypse trope and spins it in a unique, grotesque direction. Set in the 1950's, every last detail is executed flawlessly to make the reader feel they are at that point in time without it being too overdone. I absolutely love Buddy and Suzie; their personalities and character development felt real and not at all over the top or bland.

Like every Robertson book, this felt like you were watching a movie... but you were reading a book! Also, if you are able, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook as it takes the story to another level. The voice actors are perfect, the sound effects are out of this world and they really add an extra flair to the story. Please, please, please read this one -- you won't regret it!

There's a double dose of nostalgia here. Sure it's a 50s b-movie homage, but done in the wholesome style of those 80s movies obsessed with the decade like Grease or American Graffiti only it doesn't shy away from the social horrors of the time.

I'll preface this review by saying I'm not a big fan of zombies, which is why I was so surprised to enjoy this book this much. 😁

My Zombie Sweetheart reads like one of those numerous campy 80s sci-fi horror movies that hark back to 50s America. It's full of greasers and rock 'n roll and bittersweet nostalgia. And maybe one or two other things... 👽

It's like a cheeseburger and milkshake from a neon-lit roadside diner. You know what you're getting and you know how good it tastes. 🍔🥤

This book is choking on nostalgia and atmosphere. Buddy is a protagonist you fall in love with quickly and are with him all the way through the horrors both zombie and human. I was cheerleading for him and Suzie the whole way.

It's easy to tell when an author just loves what they've written, and it's evident here in every tender moment, every 'bite' of terror and every moment of pure cheese. 🧀 I lost count of the amount of times I laughed against my will.

I think I might have liked a little more at the end but of course there's always room for a sequel...

Highly recommended!

5/5 - Brilliant storytelling.

As always Christopher Robertson writes amazing that include relatable characters because he captures humanity in all facets, good, bad, funny, violent. His stories, although they are horror, tend to have a social and cultural point of view woven within the plot, which I love.

MZS was such a fun ride. I’ll admit I was beyond a little geeked out over the cause for the zombie infection. I won’t spoil, but I will say the reason is something I’ve always been fascinated with.

The horror factor was on point. The fear for the protagonist is constant. The gore is visceral. And there’s always a touch of humor to round out the blood and violence.

I will rec this book like I do with all of his other works. He is a beyond talented author with such a fresh and unique writing style.

This concept was actually pretty cool! Not really a fan of romance-horror novels, but this one worked out well. Loved the setting, and the zombie outbreak was done well.

My only real problem with the novel was the character, Buddy. Buddy annoyed the Hell out of me. Very unrealistic, cringe, and annoying character. Most of his actions/feelings made zero sense. If he wasn’t one of the main characters it wouldn’t be so bad but the fact that I had to follow his story so much, made me want to skim a lot of his scenes.

Otherwise, the concept was awesome!
