Camp Legend

Rate this book
Welcome to CAMP LEGEND, where every kid is a true believer in legendary figures like Santa Claus, Cupid, the Easter Bunny, and even Bigfoot—well, almost everyone.

Twelve-year-old Taj Tennyson didn’t ask to go to Camp Legend but here he is, the only nonbeliever in the whole camp. So how did a kid who made it his life’s mission to debunk magic even get invited to a camp where kids spend their entire summer learning to become legendary figures? By accident really—well, maybe not exactly by accident.

Taj had set a trap to catch his parents pretending to be the Tooth Fairy, only the real Tooth Fairy got fried by the wire he’d connected to a couple nine-volt batteries instead. Before he knew it, he’d incapacitated her and unintentionally helped a group of bad guys named the Red Claw to kidnap her. Like I said, almost by accident. Because Taj saw the kidnapping, he is now under the watchful care of Father Time as part of the Legendary Witness Protection Program. Instead of spending his summer vacation building robots and taking it easy, he’s pretending to fit in with kids who practically worship the holiday seasons. Awkward! His only hope for returning to normal life is to find a way to fit in, or discover who kidnapped the Tooth Fairy and bring them to justice. Only, on his quest for freedom, he unearths a deadly plot that threatens not just the legendary figures but quite possibly the entire world—and it’s all his fault.

I absolutely loved this book! It's been a while since I read a middle grade, but after all the intensity and seriousness of adult books, it was refreshing to read something different. I wish I was better at remembering lines I loved, because there were many in this book. I loved the little lessons taught and learned, I loved the humor, just...all of it. The author's style has a way of being easy to read and feeling "middle grade" without ever talking down to the reader or implying that kids aren't smart enough to "get it." He treats adults and kids with respect, which I love.

I think anyone could enjoy this book. I mean, I did! It's a lot like Percy Jackson, except instead of gods and goddesses, it's legendary figures--this book dealt a lot with the holiday legends (the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, etc.) but there's a clear suggestion that in future books, we may see other legendary heroes. I don't want to spoil the story for you, but let me just say, I'm pretty sure one of my own favorite legends of all time might play a major role and that's freakin' exciting!

I have several favorite parts ~ one where the author tricked me and gave me a happy surprise (no spoilers!) and another that involved boys in tutus. But really, there was just goodness after goodness in this book.

I've read most of Mikey Brooks' books, so I kinda knew what to expect going into this one, but it was even better than I'd hoped for. Please read this book and share the love! I want Mikey to write and publish the next book and he might not do that if this first book never gets read. Spread the love, my friends!

This was such a fun book! If you enjoy books where magical worlds exist within our world (like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or Fablehaven) you’ll love camp legend.

What could be better than finding out all the magical heroes of legends are real? … Spending a whole summer camp with them, of course!

This is a fabulous adventure that hooked me from the get-go when Taj discovers the tooth fairy is real ... right before he witnesses her kidnapping! Taj is shuttled into a kind-of magical witness protection program and winds up in a summer camp full of kids with unshakeable belief in all legendary figures. And there he is, the only doubter.

I loved experiencing this adventure through the eyes of Taj. Even though he’s in this amazing camp full of all the great activities kids get to do at camp times ten (because, you know, MAGIC), he still has to cope with everyday challenges most kids face—like bullies, being different, and learning how to navigate new friendships. Taj met all these problems head-on with strength and tenacity, while trying to muster the faith he needs to defeat evil in the end.

But are you sure you want to give this book to the kiddo in your life? They’ll certainly stay up way past their bedtime, because it’s awfully hard to put this story down. In the end, I was clamoring for more and can’t wait for the next installment. Seriously, kids will adore this book!
