Stylish Dodo Dorchester is a well-known patron of fashion. Hired by the famous Renee Dubois to support her line of French designs, she travels between Paris and London frequently. Arriving for the showing of the Spring 1923 collection, Dodo is thrust into her role as an amateur detective when one of the fashion models is murdered. Working under the radar of the French DCJP Inspector Roget, she follows clues to solve the crime. Will the murderer prove to be the man she has fallen for?
Quite exciting! Murder at the fashion show in Paris in 1923 gives Dodo another mystery to pursue! She encounters a man, Belgian, mustache, who tells her to use " her little grey cells", while she is investigating. In each encounter, he provides her with a hint for finding her murderer! Wonder who this could be!
Lady Dodo Dorchester is growing on me, unfortunately the authors ability to put together an investigation wasn’t quite as convincing.
The most irritating thing was the author made a big point of Dodo understanding how the poison could be administrated, she even had ’Poirot’ included in the story as a poison expert. However when Dodo is following this up she is told exactly how the poison was delivered, but then completely ignores the information. This is just poor writing.
One other minor criticism was in the first book we were told Dodo was wary of men after a bad romance, but in both books 1&2, the author has her unable to resist good-looking men. I’m not sure why she needed to make such a strong-willed independent women so shallow when it comes to handsome men.
If I was just considering Dodo and Lizzie I could easily have given four stars, but my annoyance with the author has reduced this to three.
Lovely look at Paris in the twenties, with high society members, artists and the less fortunate of society all thrown together in an intriguing murder mystery. With an amusing homage at Dame Christie with few cameos of Poirot, it is a fun, if not completely accurate, read.
I loved this second in the series with Dodo Dorchester and her sleuthing. What another fun read. I wasn’t sure I wanted to go to France but I did enjoy it anyway. I can highly recommend this book. Now on to number three in the series. Can’t wait.
This is a great little read! A bit of fashion, a bit of romance, a bit of murder. Also, a gentle salute to Agatha Christie's character, Hercule Poiroit, referred to as the "little Belgian." Shannon Kennedy
For me the continuous appearance of the mysterious unnamed Belgian detective throughout this novel leaves a bitter taste. It's one thing to appreciate another novelist but to take their character and place him within your own novel in such way shows no respect, for them or their creation.
Without the appearance of this character it's rather obvious that Sutton was unable to conjure from her own imagination a way to reveal the truth about the poison.. rather than effectively plagiarising characters and ideas from the Queen of Crime fiction she should perhaps have come up with an alternative crime.. something she could create a much more believable storyline for. Eloise just happening to overhear two sailors discussing and then them just happening to have acquired and be prepared to sell a deadly poison. The mystery Belgian just appearing and passing on the relevant information to Dodo is equally preposterous. Christie was a master.. twisting devious plots, distinctive style, clues hidden in full view of the reader, to produce anything less is an insult.. Sutton sorely lost her way with this, which I assume is intended as an homage.
Yes, I'm a huge fan of Christie..
I honestly hope she refrains from further attempts to use other authors creations.
It's not even well done. Christie deserves far better than this.
This second book of the Dodo Dorchester mystery series flowed better than the first. I like giving new indie authors a chance, and I feel Ann Suttons' stories are quick but enjoyable. I don't like to critique on history, since I am not learned enough to do so: Many of her reviewers cite history mistakes....since this is a fiction novel, I feel they are too harsh. The story flowed well enough that I did not notice any glaring grammar mistakes either. Dodo is still learning her way to be a heroine full of character, and I feel it's worth it to read all about it. 😊
Not a bad whodunit, with several twists. Dodo did overlook the most important clue given her, which kept the story going even though I 'm certain it jumps out to every reader. An error which puzzles me is the reference to Dodo's age. According to the author she was 15 at the end of the war. It is now 1923, which should make Dodo 23, but the author stated she is 21. A small thing, but it caused me to go back and forth a few times to double check. It always amazes me when authors and editors miss the simple things.
What a delight and wonderful cozy this was. I don't think poor Dodo will ever find a guy that is true to his feelings & wants to futher thier relationship for the right reasons. Plus i think she should not fall so fast for the fellowship she does, but I'm sure it's hard with so many rich handsome men around and so much fun things to do. Plus she's awfully beautiful herself, but at least she isn't the type to be stuck up. She needs to meet a wealthy Scotland Yard DCI and detect together!
We are in Paris for fashion week where Dodo is of course choosing, okaying and wearing select items from Renee’s collection. While book #1 in this series started well, we appear to have morphed into the hmmm… zone as Dodo goes from able in book #1 to adept in book #2, encouraging this listener’s back chat, suggestions, guffaws and sniggers upon the arrival of the too similar Poirot character, almost disappointed though did not surprise, am hoping book #3 brings us back into the easy believable read / listen. Thank you for your words Ann Sutton, appreciated. :-)
Dodo has gone to Paris for the annual spring show of her friend Renee Dubois and is again thrust into the middle of a murder....she is asked to try and find the real killer by her friend Renee. You will find yourself on a quick read with Dodo eliminating each suspect and stymied by who could be the real killer when she runs out of suspects....good read, action, romance (maybe) and a bit of suspense.
Firstly, I'm a sucker for a good murder mystery set in the 20's. That era is a perfect setting for a good story and this second installment in the Dodo Dorchester series of books doesn't disappoint. It's set in Paris and centres around the death of a model who was working for Dodo's friend, Renee. I found the book flowed much better than her first story and I enjoyed trying to figure out who did it. Also a certain well-known Belgian detective also made an appearance which was great fun!
An easy summer afternoon read (well, maybe two afternoons). Dodo puts her little grey cells to work solving a murder in Paris. I like the character development and the mystery was pretty good. Not too difficult to deduce, but nicely put together. There were a couple of things as I was reading that I wondered if they were anachronistic. I did not make note of the things that jumped out at me, but it's a niggling feeling. Otherwise, a good cozy mystery.
Such a fun, cozy mystery! I loved this one even more than the first! The setting of Paris made me feel as if I was there. The mystery was so well done and had me double guessing at every twist and turn! It was a quick read that grabbed my attention from the start. I love how clever and unconventional Dodo is and can’t wait to solve more mysteries with her!
With a guest appearance by a certain Belgian detective this is a fun story with plenty of twists and turns. Will an old lady from St Mary Meade be appearing in a future novel in this series? Fully recommended to all lovers of a good mystery.
Really did not like that a girl so young and blessed had to die.Nor should girls have to put up wth the arrogance of guys who feel like they are entitled. Did not appreciate Eloise thinking that she was free to take the girls designs
This series is entertaining, but someone who knows the proper place to put commas and the difference between apostrophe s and s apostrophe needs to be doing the proofreading
I am just getting reacquainted with this series. It's been a while since I read the first installment. I enjoyed the fashion and of course the locale of the story Paris! Add in a handsome rogue, a mysterious Belgium "investigator", and I had a fun read.
Good plot but some of the characterization, Claude, in particular, comes across as heavy handed. Lizzie's fears of technology, the tube, the tram at Mont Marte(?) doesn't seem right. Why? Doesn't ring true and actually added nothing to the story.
The main character is very charming. Bright and humorous. The author weaves famous characters into the story. Very unexpected. It will surprise the reader who assists in the solving the crime.
Another enjoyable mystery, with Dodo coming to the rescue. This time she is in Paris with her maid Lizzie. And all the fashions, excitement that it entails.. Oh, and the Eiffle tower.
This is a quirky little historical mystery romance with twists and turns and clues.I enjoyed that the story was a who done it style with out the usual anxiety and overly dramatic emotions.Great characters.❣️💃🏻🙀🤨
Lovely historical fiction cozy with wonderful cameos from a variety of real life figures--and one very welcome fictional character. Looking forward to seeing what is next for Dodo, Didi, Lizzie, and a few other (hopefully recurring) characters.
There is no way to explain what an exceptional storyline this is. I read a lot. This book is at the top of my extensive library. I am definitely going to see if there is another by this author! Thanks for such an exciting, heartwarming read. I so recommend it.
Another brilliant read, I really enjoyed this book, different characters are really well written, the twists in the story are brilliant can't wait for the next one.
