Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn

Rate this book
Sixteen-year-old Liam Covington is the only one who sees colorful shadows following him around school. They're brightest whenever someone messes with him. That's why Liam lives by a short code: keep a low profile, stay away from the colors, and don't talk to Kenna Berlin.
But today Kenna saved his life. And he just made enemies with the biggest jock in school. And worst of all, the strange conch shell he brought home from the dunes today is making the colors brighter.

A very clever story about a seriously underrepresented mythological powerhouse. Outside of Aladdin, there really aren't many Jinn stories.
.
This story grabbed me from page 1. Rachel Huffmire has a brilliant way of hooking you on her story early on; I love that about her writing style.
.
You can tell a lot of research went into bringing this book into existence. It was easy to become completely invested in the characters and the story.
.
A solid fantasy book (hopefully, series) for that between middle grade and YA group!
.

2/9/25: Listening to this book was basically experiencing it again for the first time, thanks to my rampant book amnesia! I remembered liking this story, and I still like it after all these years. The narrator did a great job capturing the tone of a teenage boy. I definitely need more books set in this world! I received a complimentary Audible version of this book from the author. All thoughts are mine.

Everything that can go wrong does to Liam...it's almost like he's cursed. And on top of it, he sees weird things that others don't see. When people are angry, mad, or there's trouble a brew, he sees colors around him. Colors that are a secret gateway into a spectacularly magical world.

A charming story about jinn (genies) in a way I've never really seen them represented before. In fact, this may be the first story I've ever seen where a jinn is not a minor side character (besides I Dream of Genie). Liam had an interesting backstory and there is a ton of great tension with the romantic interest that I love. The jinn world is so fascinating and extraordinary. The ending was fast paced and full of thrills and excitement.

And I thought there was an interesting theme/symbol about the devils on our shoulder, telling us what to do, and the power in getting our wishes when we ignore them and choose a higher path.

A sweet story filled with magic, cute romantic moments, school issues, and ancient curses.

Before reading Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn, my only real exposure to jinn (or the anglicized "genie") was thanks to the big blue guy in Aladdin. So the rich and intricate world that Rachel Huffmire brought to life was fascinating! Liam can see colors when trouble is on its way. But it's not until he's suddenly thrust into the world of the Jinn that he understands the true depth of what's going on behind the scenes. Now he must escape the curse before it's too late...but that's easier said than done.
Complete with beautiful descriptions and an exciting plot, Granted will be enjoyable for both boys and girls, as well as adults.
On a side note, the only thing that troubled me was the way King Solomon was portrayed, as it contradicts what I understand to be true of him from the Christian Old Testament accounts. Upon looking this up further, this portrayal of him is consistent with The Quran and other Arab myth. While it's not the way I picture Solomon, I love books that send me toward research to learn more :)

I read it in two days! I really enjoyed Huffmire's books, "Shattered Snow" and "Spinning Briar", which are both spin-offs of fairytales. Therefore, I was very happy to find "Granted", which takes a spin in the world of genies, or jinn. There aren't many books around about genies, but just as she did with the previous two, Granted takes a wonderful right turn on the trope. It is set in the US southwest desert, which happens to be where I grew up, so that was especially enjoyable. The MC, Liam, at first, just wants to be a normal teen until he finds his abnormality of seeing genies might be the thing to save him, his family, friends, and even the scary world of the Jinn. Well done, Ms. Huffmire.

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Granted is an intriguing story that describes the parallel and intersecting worlds of humans and jinn, who are ephemeral beings with unique powers and a hefty dose of magic. The jinn will mesmerize you.

With artful writing Rachel Huffmire brings the reader on 16-year-old Liam’s journey as he navigates the real world with an absent father and is pursued by the jinn who wreak havoc on unsuspecting people.

Liam becomes a true hero, willing to risk his life to protect those he loves, especially his special friend Kenna.

The ending leaves the reader panting for the next book as life takes an unexpected turn when the curse that keeps the human and the jinn worlds apart crashes, and Liam lands right in the middle.

What would you do if you were granted three wishes? It seems like an easy question but when Liam is faced with the opportunity he finds that the Jinn (genies) have wishes of their own. Being the brunt of bad luck and bullies Liam has spent years feeling cursed and little does he know that he's completely right.

I've always loved Arabian lore. It usually involves someone clever put in a magical scenario and it's fun to watch how things play out. Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn has the same quality and has an authentic way of weaving the grounded modern setting with the magical and rich folklore that is somehow familiar and yet exotic at the same time.

I enjoyed the contrast of the desert setting against the vibrant Jinn world and characters. The narrative tied the grounded aspects of a real location with the fantastic elements that I look for in fiction. I'm not very familiar with the lore of the Jinn so the story felt fresh and different than most of the books I tend to come across. We've all heard the mainstream stories about genies but what do most people actually know about them? It makes me wonder why we don't have more stories that draw upon the mythology of the Jinn since it has such a rich well of lore and potential for adventure.

The pace of the story seemed to pick up with each chapter and the story unfolded in a clever and mind bending way that kept me guessing at how everything would tie together. Rachel Huffmire has a way of revealing complex scenarios in organic ways by dropping puzzle pieces that combine into an impressive conclusion. I found myself thinking through the logic of what was happening and trying to imagine what I would have done if put in the situation of the characters.

With the groundwork that Granted has put in place I'm curious to see where the series goes next!

I have always been obsessed with Arabic folklore, even though Arabic mythology doesn't often appear in American literature. When I was a young girl, I connected with these stories because they often portrayed women in pivotal roles. Instead of relying on brute strength or ambiguous morality like European myths, heros used intelligence and wit. Women weren't helpless maidens in towers. They scalded robbers with hot oil and subdued tyrants with stories.
Often times, everything that COULD go wrong, DID go wrong (I'm looking at you Sinbad...), so I did my best to incorporate that element in this book.
I'm currently editing the sequel to Granted, so hopefully I can update with a release date soon!
I hope you enjoy reading!

First, I love that the main character in Granted is a 16-year-old boy. Anyone familiar with the YA section at any book store knows how rare that is. As a mother of teenage boy readers I really appreciate having a male MC. I also think girls reading will LOVE the male POV.

Next, this book is about Jinn, magical creatures that in the world of fiction are even more overlooked than teenage boys. I found the Jinn magic system enchanting and surprising and sometimes quite humorous. There was an element of mystery that kept me guessing. Granted has a happy-ish ending, but still leaves some unanswered questions, setting up for a sequel, which I can’t wait to read.

Wow, wow, wow! What a great read! Seriously! This book starts off with the most captivating questions and mysteries, making it hard to put down! Then it leads you into a creative world that brings to life a fun, new perspective about how “Jin” or genie’s work. Adventure, mystery, friendship, and real life struggles of any teen!

This is a great read for teens, especially boys, but heck, I loved reading it and I’m neither of those. 😂 I enjoyed the struggles and the triumphs, the questions and the answers, the exploration of a new world and the real-ness of the world we live in! It’s the perfect mix of fantasy and reality that makes it relatable, but transports you to an experience of imagination beyond the norm!

Loved it!

The book is an incredible read, combining fantasy, with friendship and love. Liam, you’re typical outsider at school, can communicate with the jinn who are controlling him and his friends.
A relatable boy, from a single-parent home, struggling with school and trying to hide things from his worrying mother- who hasn’t done this!?
A really enjoyable book, suitable for all ages.

Rachel has a way with words that makes you feel like you are in the story. I can definitely see many of these events happening in High Schools today. I could not put this book down and loved every bit!

Rachel has written such a fantastic book! This is perfect for, not only teenage boys, but all teens and adults. The book and characters drew me in from the start and I could barely put it down. I have recommended it to all of my nieces and nephews as well as their parents.

Liam Covington is a typical teenager, he goes to high school and has a close friend group, but as hard as he tries to keep a low profile while he is there, the other kids are always messing with him, bullying him and generally making his life awkward, but what they don’t know is that he can see colours all around him, not just normal colours, they are attached to people and they get brighter when he is going to be messed around with, but even if he did tell someone, they wouldn’t believe him anyway.

As usual his day starts with someone pushing him over on the way to school, but today, he is going on the school field trip to the desert and he is hoping that it won’t get much worse, however, when he gets on the bus, he can see the colours everywhere and tries to mind his own business. When they get there and the ranger starts talking about the desert, it’s geological features and the life which teams within it, all the kids are just waiting until they can go and play on the dunes, but Liam is enjoying the tour and talk just as much, he is also reminiscing about the family holiday he used to have as well. He crests one of the sand dunes and breathes in the air, thoroughly enjoying himself until he is drawn to a midnight blue colour smoke which is making patterns in the sand below him, this is when danger strikes and he steps into a sinkhole just as a dust devil appears and mixes in with the smoke and swirls towards him but he cannot move or- avoid the sand swirling around him, he tries to dig into the sand and find some kind of purchase to get away from it all. The next thing he knows is Kenna, a girl he has been trying to avoid comes to his rescue, pulls him out of the sand and offers him some water, his head hurts and he feels exhausted and gritty, but still he picks up the unusual shell and walks back to the bus with his friend supporting him.

Things start to go from bad to worse when his brother and mother find out what happened and are mad at him for not telling them as soon as he saw them, but it gets worse when the colours start getting brighter and start to appear in people's eyes, not to mention the school gossip which is making his life worse, especially when it comes to Kenna, someone who he swore not to talk to again after their families had a disagreement years ago. Meanwhile, he begins to see what he thinks are hallucinations and the shell he picked up in the desert is either burning hot or covered in the blue designs he can see in his hallucinations, but what happens next shocks him into realising that maybe his hallucinations are real and that they may be able to give him some answers as to why he sees the colours and nobody else does. This is a fantasy adventure which will have you speeding along with Liam while he tries to work out the mystery of why he experiences what he does, while trying to live a life as normally as he can.

Sixteen year old Liam is already struggling with normal teenager issues when he discovers that powerful magic is also affecting his life. In Granted, Rachel Huffmire introduces the reader to a unique world of Jinn (genies) living among humans and influencing them for mysterious purposes. The deeper Liam dives into the world of the Jinn, the higher the stakes become for him and those he holds dearest.

The mythological in the modern world is reminiscent of a Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson adventures while the emotional life of a teenager is potrayed as a masterfully as in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Deeper themes of unseen forces and their influence on humanity evoke fantasy and Science Fiction author Orson Scott Card. Ultimately though, the realm of the Jinn introduced in Granted is fresh and original and Huffmire’s imaginative world building and storytelling keeps the reader engaged until the very end. Indeed, I was relieved to hear that a sequel is in the works as the potential for more adventure in this world is vast.

I will certainly recommend this to my 13 year old son but at 43 years of age, I enjoyed this immensely myself (I listened to the entire book on Audible in one session). Would highly recommend!

So, this was a great young adult read and I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. For me, the best part of this book was that it featured a male as the main character because there are so few books out there now that do. I loved how the story incorporated a single-parent home life, teenage romance, magic, and mystery all together to create such a relatable book. I fell in love with the story immediately and didn’t want it to end. In fact, I am hoping that there is a follow-up to this story because I could certainly see this having several sequels to it. I felt that the author pulled me into the story as I was reading because her writing skills were so keen and informative. This was the first book I have read by this author but I’m going to check out more of her work from the library because if all her books are as good as this one then I’m going to become addicted. If you have a young adult male reader in your household or know someone that does, this will make for a great read for them.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire. This is a very short coming of age story. Its includes magic, teenage romance, ginns and mystery. Its the story of a genie who is controlling the destiny of 16 year old Liam. Liam knows something is going on with him but is not sure what. He knows he sees things others don't see and he knows when colors appear someone is mad, angry or upset. So his theory is to lay low and not be in the spotlight ever! When the Jinn appears and offers him 3 wishes what will he do? He has a great crush on a girl but he knows not to get around her because he's afraid of what will happen. He feel totally alone because he is being raised by his mom only and he doesn't want to worry her. What will happen to Liam? Read this fun coming of age story to find out!

This was a fun read! Right off the bat I was intrigued by the mysterious colors and Liam's severe bad luck. It took a few chapters for the story to really take off, but once it did it was fascinating to see pieces of the puzzle click into place as Liam discovers the jinn and their unique history/mythology. The book has plenty of lighter moments and adventure, but also explores deeper themes of friendship, bullying, service, and personal choice vs. outside influence.

Content-wise it's pretty PG. There's zero profanity or sex. There is some physical bullying, and a couple of scenes where characters are injured in various accidents. Nothing remotely graphic, though. Overall I would say this falls on the younger end of YA. I'd definitely recommend for both teens and tweens.

YA Fantasy

I love the YA genre. It is like there are few rules for the writer to follow. This gives the author creative freedom. The plot-line really moved along. I was drawn into the story from the first page until the last page. The characters are fun and unique. This story is about Liam. Liam is special because he can see colors. The colors are present when people and or things are messing with him. He has gotten himself in a little bit of trouble with a jock who is now his enemy. Kenna has helped Liam but is there more. What are the colors telling him? I highly recommend reading this book to find out about Liam, the colors, the enemy, and Kenna.

I was excited to read this as in the description it stated that fans of Artemis Fowl would enjoy it. When I was younger, I loved Artemis Fowl, in fact, I still have the books so having the chance to find something that was just as gold as that made me super duper happy. I’ve got to say that Huffmire has really written something brilliant here that I think both young people and adults will enjoy. It is fun, it is magical, and it has some wonderful characters.
Liam is one of these wonderful characters and he has a simple code that he lives by; keep a very low profile – head down and don’t draw attention to yourself – stay away from the colours, the bright and blinding colours, and absolutely don’t make contact with Kenna Berlin. This code happens to be in answer to some very weird and wonderful things that happen to Liam, like for example, seeing colourful shadows that no one else can.
Of course, this story wouldn’t be a story if Liam’s code didn’t get a little blurred around the edges, and it does, it really does. One day changes it all, Kenna becomes impossible to ignore, keeping his head down becomes difficult with the most popular guy at school out to get him, and a shell that he happened to find is making the colours way brighter.
I got to say that I loved reading this and Huffmire really did capture all the elements I thought were brilliant in Artemis Fowl. Huffmire is a talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work, she really brings magic into her work.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Hoffmire

This is a wonderful young adult book. As a mother of a couple preteens I appreciate that the main character is a boy. It’s a refreshing change and I know my son would enjoy reading this book some day. It is exciting to see a more in-depth story about the magic of Jinns, aka genies.
Liam, the sixteen year old main character sees colors around people whenever they are about to do something bad. He learned early on that this wasn’t normal. So he tries his best to stay away from these colorful smoke or mists around his classmates. But Liam seems to attract trouble pretty much anywhere. When he gets hurt on a school field trip, things start to really get dangerous. What will Liam learn through this experience? I’ll let you find out.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire is a brilliant YA book that is full of twists and turns the whole way through. I thought this book was an exciting read and I was drawn into it instantly. Part of the reason for this I think is because this is the first time I have read a book of this genre told from a male POV. This was a refreshing change and really made it feel like an overall better story.
I really found the characters engaging and so easy to connect with. The journey was not only exciting to read about but easy to imagine. This was a great book and one that I throughly enjoyed.

Omg this was such a fun and magical read! I have read Rachel Huffmire before and fallen in love with her mind and how she takes the fairy tales we grew up with and turns them into these worlds I love and never want to leave. I have gotten my daughter a bit hooked on her as well and I am so excited to tell her there is a new one from her with a completely new twist we don’t get enough of, jinn, or genies! Don’t instantly think of Aladdin either, this is a magic that is woven and deep with nods to the Arabic folklore that never gets fully explored. I was so in love with how magical this read felt and how it took me to a world I didn’t want to come out of at the end. I sure hope that we get more in the future among the same Arabic folklore from Huffmire again.

This is a story about Liam. He is a sixteen year old that sees colors when people mess with him. Things are happening for him that are making his colors stand out. He has his life saved, makes an enemy and a shell he brings home, what do these have to do with his colors? I highly recommend reading this book to find out. He is a great young teen character that brought life to his story. It is a fast paced story that is unique and creative. Find out what happens to Liam and his colors.

Granted: Curse Of The Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire

Holy Wow this author has gone and done it again. She has quickly become one of my one-click authors and Granted is my favorite yet. Tbis ia a young adult story that pulled me in from the very beginning and I found myself lost in the pages. I couldn’t put it down and finished in one sitting. This is a wonderfully written story about a sixteen year old named Liam. He sees colors when people mess with him. The colors start to stand out when stuff starts happening for him. When someone saves his life and he brings home a shell and along the way makes an enemy. What do these things have in common? Do the effect his colors? There’s just the right amount of twists a d turns that will have you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out happens next?. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.

This was a fun and magical young adult book. I really enjoyed that the main character was a boy and a shy boy that doesn't fit in. The authors portrayal of the character and the world around him really creates the scene.

Liam is a 16 year old boy. He has a special gift. He can see colours around people but only when they are up to no good. As much as he tries to stay away from trouble it always seems to be attracted to him.

Through this story he has his life saved by an unlikely person, he makes an enemy and finds a strange shell on a school field trip. What the shell is and what it means is one mystery that gets unravelled and leads Liam into some dangerous situations.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire was a really good read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, and it was a tale unlike any I've read before. I won't lie though. It took me several chapters before I fully became enthralled in this novel. I was pretty confused at the beginning, what with the colors and the random events that happened (not so random in the long scheme of things) and it felt like it wasn't really explained well. But it did all get explained later. I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I expected to, which was pretty surprising considering I didn't like it very much at the beginning. This was a very interesting read and I can't wait to read more from the author in the future!

Interesting integration of Jinn myths into a modern setting. Liam is accident prone and is always being picked on. But is it his fault, or is there something else at play?

This is a quick read, and you get into the world fast and it builds.

I thought this was going to be a middle grade fantasy, but it is young adult.

I received a copy from StoryOrigin. All opinions are my own.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn takes us into the life of Liam. Liam’s life is just one incident of being bullied after another. And if that isn’t enough, if he isn’t being bullied, then he has the worst luck. Liam believes his life will always be this way and that he cannot do anything to escape his bad luck and torment. Until, one day, he discovers the Jinn. He then goes on an adventure that turns his life upside down and changes everything he thought he knew about himself. I enjoyed reading this fun adventure.

Granted: Curse of the Emerald Jinn by Rachel Huffmire is a wonderfully original start to a new YA fantasy series. With magic, Jinn/genies, the paranormal, teen struggles, obstacles, friendship, quirky characters, and more- this story made for a fun read.
Liam is thrust into a situation/adventure he never could have predicted. When strange things begin to happen, Liam’s life ifs about to change. Genies, magic, and even a little romance were cleverly woven into a great little read.

Thank you, Rachel Huffmire!
