Review 3.5 stars! 💙

This is the first book of the Pirates of the Withering Coast, a lower YA fantasy series with Treasure Planet vibes, sirens, pirates and loads of adventure!

We follow Trevor, a young boy who from the very beginning of his life has a mysterious connection to the sea. He longs for adventure; fascinated with stories about a lost pirate treasure and sirens. The beginning of the story is slow paced as we see Trevor throughout the years and his earning for the sea. I think this part could have been shorter, as the real action starts when a now adolescent Trevor finally gets the courage to pursue his dreams.

Trevor stowaways on a pirate ship, knowing nothing about who he is and how much danger he is truly in. The miscommunication trope is not my favorite, as a lot of the hardships that Trevor goes through could have been prevented. But I did find it intriguing to discover alongside him the secrets his family was keeping from him. Not only that, but he gets to meet a lot of interesting characters throughout his journey. The story becomes really action packed as Trevor goes through curve ball after curve ball!

The author let's us know from the start that Trevor is not a very likeable person. He behaves like a spoiled brat, overconfident, mouthy and child-like. I found it interesting to see his character development throughout the story. He had an easy life up growing up and thought that he could get away with anything, so he learns a lot of lessons along the way. I believe that this is a great book for a young audience to learn about respect and thinking twice about things. A fun and quick read that will give you nostalgic feelings of adventurous stories like Treasure Planet ❤️

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review

This book was so fabulous. The beginning was a little slow, but as soon as the story got going I was totally invested.
Trevor is a super interesting character, a bit annoying but more realistic because of it. I look forward to his character growth as the series continues.
The inclusion of all the different fantasy aquatic races is super cool, and I like the original twists that Alonna Williams has on them.
The plot is really cool, and keeps moving. I thought the ending portion was a bit different than your usual book, with no clear “dark moment” and didn’t really have a “final showdown”, but honestly the way it was written I was ok with it. It really fit the siren vibe, where Trevor is in a bad situation, but, like him, you don’t necessarily feel like it because the sirens are lulling you into a feeling of safety.
Since it’s a series, the way the first book ends is perfect for leading into the next one.

I'm always up for a pirate/mermaid/siren story so I tend to like them a bit more just for the atmosphere alone. Unfortunately, I didn't fall in love with this one as I wanted to. It definitely feels on the younger side of YA almost Middle Grade at times as we are following our main character's life as he grows up. Our MC is quite insufferable, there is a reason and a slight arc. But it was hard for me to connect to the story because of this. The overall plot and whimsy of the world is excellent and I think a lot of people will really enjoy this one!

This story has a lot of potential. The use of sirens and pirates in the story is done in a unique way which is what drew me to it. There is a good intrigue in place and elements planted to make the series move along. What lost me is how much I could not stand the main character. I don’t know if it is because I am a mom to soon teenagers myself or just because that kind of character just does not do it for me but it made it hard for me to concentrate on everything around the story because of it. I also feel like the book aims for a bit of a younger audience then what I am and would fit better with a late teen than a 30 something year old.

Book 1- The Siren’s Call

My, my, my, where do I even start 😂. There is something about Alonna’s books, I can’t quite place what it is, but I can never seem to put them down. I finished reading this this morning and I only started it a few days ago, I think I’m addicted. This book was fast paced and action packed, full of adventure and fantasy and pirates and everything I love. I really liked Trevor as a main character, he is funny and, despite other characters finding him annoying, he has a good heart. Onna only came into the story towards the end of the book, but I can already see a possible ship forming and know she will end up being one of my favourite characters in this series. But, for now, I already have a favourite character, my boy Arjan. I know he was hardly in this book, but he was so endearing and loveable that I could not help him becoming my favourite character and am looking forward to seeing him in the rest of the series, especially after that ending 😱. I am also excited to learn more about the aquatics in the rest of the series and see more of the different species, and find out what those pesky sirens are up to 😂. Basically, I loved this book so much and need to read more of this series!

Book 2- The Willow’s Weep (it isn’t on Goodreads)

It is no secret how much I love Alonna Williams’s books and that I think she is a criminally underrated author, and this book further cemented that for me. I loved this book! I was starting to fall into a bit of a reading slump before I picked up this, but this dragged me straight back out again with how fast-paced and action packed it was! I can never put down Alonna’s books! I said in my review of the first book in this series (The Siren’s Call) that I really wanted to see more of the Aquatics in the next book, and I got just that! This series is jam-packed full of wonderful world-building and it’s such a joy every time something new is revealed about this magical world. I love oceanic mythology and I LOVE pirates stories, so this series is right up my alley. I loved the start of Trevor’s character development in this book and am excited to see him further grow in the next books. My favourite character is still Arjan, especially after learning more about him, as he is such a kind yet complex character. I’m very intrigued to see where his story goes in the next books. The ending of this book has left me hanging onto a painful cliffhanger, just like the first book did, so I will be waiting in desperation until the third book is released as I need more of this series! I highly recommend checking out Alonna’s work because her books are amazing and she deserves so much more recognition!

William Henderson is desperate, after seeing his pregnant wife Sara dying in front of him, he reaches out to Arjan, a siren, to save both Sara and the child's lives. From then on, Arjan and the child Trevor form an inseparable bond, based upon his love for swashbuckling pirates, the sea, and the hidden treasure of Redskull, based upon the stories he was brought up on. However, this bond is inevitably cut short, when Trevor is five, with the fear looming of Arjan's mother's unwavering desire to lure Trevor away from his parents. To protect little Trevor, Arjan chooses to cut ties with the family, despite the distress it causes both. As he grows up, and forgets about his love for Arjan, his father, William, is adamant on keeping Trevor in the dark about his lineage to the human sirens, but as he grows older, and the fire within him to seize his future, and become the pirate he's always dreamed of becoming continues to burn fiercely, the truth of himself and his family long since hidden begins to unravel and reveal themselves.

I really enjoyed this book, I got major Stardust and Peter Pan vibes, although it's based more around sirens and pirates, it was very magical and enchanting, with a wholesome and important family dynamic to it. I found it really endearing and engaging to grow up alongside Trevor, as we watch his personality adapt and develop, and seeing his outlook on life change with age and experience, and to go on all these wonderful adventures with him.

Arjan and Trevor's bond was so sweet and wholesome. Trevor's imagination and his fondness and affection for Arjan, and finding RedSkull's buried treasure was such a joy to read, and made me feel almost childlike again. Just utterly heart-warming and ignites your inner child and their childlike wonder at the world that as an adult, we often end up repressing under responsibilities, just wonderfully delightful and innocent.

The story is full of really interesting characters with complex personalities and motives, to the point where you were unsure what was going to happen next, which is always fun and engaging. Trevor was a conflicting character, when he was little he was full of imagination, and joy, and wonder, but you notice as he grows up in a rich and affluent area, he becomes a little more spoilt, bratty and conceited. He's head strong, and doesn't shy away from confrontation, but still does hold on fiercely to his vast imagination and has an intense thirst to prove himself as worthy. He's cheeky and mischievous with a magnetism for getting into fights and rubbing people up the wrong way, but under all of this bravado, it's clear he has a big heart and just wants to be free and go on adventures across the sea.

It does end on a cliff-hanger, so get yourself ready! Although it does set you up nicely (and somewhat not nicely because ahhh, we want more!!) for the next book, and I was actually really pleased at the end twist, which is something that can sometimes be difficult to do, but the end was done amazingly here.

There's also a really wonderful addition of the glossary at the end to help with pronunciation of different terms and helping to understand more about the different skills and abilities sirens use to communicate with each other. Who doesn't love a good glossary with further context to dive deeper into the world you're jumping into?

Overall, just a really enchanting, mystical and action packed start to a new series that is very promising. It's fast paced, and jam packed full of adventure, with some really interesting and complex characters, with incredible twists that will leave you excited for the next instalment of the series.

Thank you so much Alonna, for gifting me with this book! I really enjoyed reading it! 💙

⭐ I loved the overall plot of this book, and especially the kind Siren Arjan who I hope we'll see more of in the sequel 💙

⭐ The story was slow to begin with - however, the build up paid off big time, because the history and characteristics of the Sirens were just AMAZING 💯

⭐ The book of course ended on a cliffhanger :))) so I'm really hoping book 2 comes soon 😂

⭐ And finally, a note about one of the underlying messages I felt while reading this book - don't lie or suppress vital information from your kids!! Imo, a lot of the struggles Trevor went through could've been resolved if his parents had been truthful and open with him - I hope this miscommunication gets addressed at some point!

Now the only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 was because of the slow start to the book.. and the book kind of ended soon after the really intense scenes started happening. However I agree that the characters and situation needed to be established thoroughly, to set up the sequel(s). I am really excited to continue the story in The Willow's Weep 💙

**Spoilers after this**

I really loved the idea of the human sirens' dual identity! Labyrinth versus Trevor scenes were the best!

And next, the idea that your face resembles the face of the person who saves you! The book starts off with Arjan saving Trevor, and it was so poetic that Trevor looks exactly like Arjan 💙 and yess, Trevor escapes with Arjan, so things are gonna get really emotional and fun now 😄

“It is interesting how humans fail to see the specialness in one another."

Blurb: “Oh little one, the darkness is waiting, oh little one, run from it if you can; come little one, where the light can find you...” This was a familiar shanty to Manchester born, Trevor Henderson; having grown up being mesmerized by stories of swashbuckling rogues, adventurous pirates and captivating aquatic creatures, he was no stranger to sea shanties. My thoughts: Do you like YA? Do you like pirates, sirens and selkie stories? Then this is the book for you! At first I thought this was going to be a generic pirate treasure type book, but then it took me for a roller coaster ride to a more omnimus, intriguing place and I can't wait to read the next one in the series to find out what happens! I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. I had a hard time connecting with the main character as he kind of turns into a little spoiled brat, but what do you expect from sheltered teenagers? Anyway! thank you so much for this complementary copy! I give The Sirens Call, The first book in the Pirates of the Withering coast series by Alonna Williams ⭐️⭐️⭐️.🌟

Thank you to @katieandbreypa and @alonnawilliams for an ARC of Pirates of the Withering Coast: Siren's Call, the first in a new YA series. I don't read much YA anymore, but this was a nice quick read that I gave 4 stars.

The book starts with Trevor's birth and quickly jumps through time to when he is sixteen. He's fascinated with pirates and the sea because his Grandmother used to tell him amazing tales of GoldenEye, Blackbeard, and all manner of sea creatures. His father is disappointed that Trevor won't just be normal and give up on this dream. So one day Trevor decides to stowaway and become a pirate...and this is where things start getting exciting. He becomes a pirate, gets into fights, is kidnapped, gets away, and is basically kidnapped again, while his family and his crew members are desperately trying to find him.

This is a nice coming-of-age story with a lot of action. The story moves along quickly with no boring or lag times that you're just trying to get through. The writing is well-done and the characters are pretty well-developed. Trevor is likeable, although his mouth does get him into trouble a lot. There are quite a few characters to try to remember, but it's not unmanageable.

All in all, a fast-paced coming of age story. If you enjoy fantasy, intrigue, pirates, sea creatures, mythology, or just good clean writing, then I would definitely recommend this.

The Siren's Call by Alonna Williams is an adventurous fantasy story. Trevor or Labyrinth's parents have a secret they are keeping from him.  As they try to dampen his thirst for an adventure, they only end up pushing him to prove himself.  When Trevor begins to hear his greatmother in his head urging him, he stows away on a pirate ship.  While on the ship, he discovers he is a human siren and can read a map to a great treasure.  As word gets out about what he is, the danger increases.  Eventually, he ends up with the Sirens. As they try to have his siren side overtake his human side, he begins to see the warning signs that all isn't what it should be. Can he keep himself safe and discover the truth before it's too late?

I fell in love with Trevor immediately. He is a complete brat and does not consider what others think about him, which left me howling with laughter.  This story is filled with action and adventure.  Trevor has a knack for finding trouble, but he has a silver tongue that helps him find his way out of it.  The story is engaging and had me anticipating what would happen next.

I rate The Siren's Call 4 out of 5 stars. It had interesting characters and an exciting plot.  It was a fun fast paced read. This book is appropriate for teens and young adults.  If you like historical fantasy on the high seas with lots of adventure and laughs, you'll enjoy The Siren's Call!

This book is very alluring, and much like its namesake, it can be disorienting but oh so beautiful.
You follow Trever from his birth to his harrowing adventure as a pirate, which really turns out to be a journey of self discovery more than anything else. He has been sheltered and spoiled by his parents and now faces a harsh reality of what people are willing to tolerate from him, and whining is not it. I have to say when push comes to shove he tends to hold his own pretty well, so I'll forgive him.

Trevor's journey is fast and as a reader I was confused at points, but those were the same points that Trevor was confused in, so I was really happy with the connection to the character as he faced so many new issues at once. There are a lot of characters but they are pretty easy to distinguish and keep up with and I am really looking forward to seeing how they all continue to affect Trevor in the sequel.

This book was fun and mysterious. I really enjoyed all the weaving connections his present had to moments growing up. It was all relevant and really well balanced. Overall a very good book that I am happy to have in my collection. Looking forward to Willows Weep and will be reading more by this author.

Trevor is half-human and half-siren which puts him in grave danger. To protect him, his parents decide not to tell him what he is. When Trevor runs away he starts learning just how much his parents hid from him, but will he be able to protect himself from the dangers they were trying to hide him from?

I wanted to love this book because I love fantasy and who doesn't love pirates and sirens?

My biggest issue was with Trevor's attitude. It does improve some later in the book, and maybe his attitude is what saves him in future books, but I struggled with it. Maybe it's because I am a mother with kids who already have attitudes too big for their bodies.

I feel like this book is more suited to a younger audience, like teens and young adults, not a 30-something-year-old mother.

The plot is solid, and there are a lot of great things to this book, I feel like if I would have read this in my early 20s I would have loved it.

However, the ending was intriguing enough that I want to give the next book a try, even if just to figure out "how?"

Thank you to the author and @katieandbreypa for the opportunity to read this book.

The Sirens Call: Pirates of the Withering Coast by Alonna Williams

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Siren's Call: Pirates of the Withering Coast by Alonna Williams is the first book of the Pirates of the Withering Coast series.

This book is a lower young adult fantasy novel with treasure planet vibes, pirates, and sirens. this book begins with the story of how Trevor Henderson of Manchester, England learns through taking a risky adventure of what his true family history is and where his lineage truly comes from.

His parents purposefully raised him to be a spoiled teenager to try to deter him from following the same paths they did.

The majority of the novel felt slow paced as the author introduced the world-building of this fantasy version of the 18th century.

A true coming-of-age story! I liked this a lot towards the end, where the pacing picked up.

Synopsis:
“Oh little one, the darkness is waiting, oh little one, run from it if you can; come little one, where the light can find you...”

This was a familiar shanty to Manchester born, Trevor Henderson; having grown up being mesmerized by stories of swashbuckling rogues, adventurous pirates and captivating aquatic creatures, he was no stranger to sea shanties. These tales instilled in him a longing for the sea.

Upon turning sixteen, he begins hearing whispers in the night, coaxing him to leave his posh life behind and follow his dreams; when Trevor finally takes the risk, he’s swept away on an adventure he never expected.

He soon learns the truth about his own identity and history, causing him to wonder if he should have set foot outside his comfort zone...

Trevor Henderson has always been drawn to the Ocean. He has grown up being mesmerized by the tales his Grandmother used to tell him, stories of pirates and sea creatures that existed beyond anyone's imagination.

But when he turns Sixteen, changes start happening to him that he cannot explain. He hears voices calling to him, talking to him and leading him on a dangerous path. He also experiences physical changes to his body, like his hair suddenly growing long or his ears becoming pointed.

Wanting answers, he sets out on a path of danger and adventure until it leads him to his true identity.

My thoughts:
I found this read a little younger than I thought it would be. It had a good storyline and I enjoyed the adventure. I didn't like that it ended in the middle of his journey - I'm guessing the next book will start off right where it left off so you would need to read the first in order to understand the next one. I saw alot of people say that they loved Trevor but honestly, he irritated me. I found him to be rude and obnoxious for a 16 year old and really spoiled. But I think the book has potential and I think it's a really good fantasy read for children who love pirates.

This story was very unique! It had a very intriguing spin on a siren story. I love how the tug and pull we have with all the different aquatic races throughout the book. They aren't ones you'll come across in most books. This story is based around the male mc, Trevor. He is one of those characters that has to grow on you. At the beginning he's lovable then as he matures he's a little obnoxious but I guess that's some teen boys for you and makes him more relatable to real life.

I say that but it also makes his journey a little bit more interesting with him being so naïve too. He get to see him learn and grown as he struggles with the obstacles of his journey. My favorite character is "Bloo" for sure. I love how he's so nurturing to Trevor from the beginning. I'm to see what comes next for Trevor now that he seems to be getting some of the answers he seeks. Will definitely be reading book two.

This young adult novel is great for anyone, age thirteen to adults due to an interesting plot. There was plenty of adventure as well as pirates. The characters were okay, although I wasn’t a big fan of Trevor who did feel like a real teenager. The cliffhanger ending has me ready for book two.

This was a quick read filled with adventure, pirates and sirens. And who doesn't love a good pirate book. This book was medium paced and a good book of you are looking a short pirate read. The book has a nice flow. There were no hiccups along the way.

However, this book didn't enthrall me. It was an ok read. Trevor's name calling game is lame to me. Like really how is calling someone the wrong name supposed to insult them and you getting offended because they say you smell like a sea breeze. Just lame. The sirens were mean as expected. And Trevor being an arrogant spoil brat got what he deserved.

But overall it wasn't a terrible book but it was good either so it sits at a neutral 3 stars for me. I won't be continuing this series.

A cute kids' adventure book about pirates and sirens. Trevor Henderson is unknowingly half of each, trapped in a landlocked life of wealthy mediocrity. He stows away on a pirate ship to prove his true potential and turns out to be quite bad at almost everything. Meanwhile, his unique powers have made him the target of both humans and aquatics.

Only this boy's unique powers (and some convenient hijinks) kept him alive. He's the Bugs Bunny of middle school clapbacks. He simply would not stop antagonizing people even at the risk of his own life. All the adults were ready to tear their hair out. So was I. I can only give this grace because maybe it's supposed to be funny for the kids. Too, this is the first of a series, so perhaps he's in for some character development.

ARC Review : The Sirens Call by Alonna Willams. (Book 1 of The Withering Coast series)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Trevor Henderson is your average boy with an intriguing background that he doesn’t even find out about until the age of sixteen.

The cover is absolutely beautiful and is what made me want to read the book. While the book does start of slow, it does pick up and had hooked until the end. There is a lot of adventure and fantasy in this story. The plot is very easy to follow. I do think this is for a younger audience but the book itself is still a good read! The ending definitely has me waiting for the second book to be released!

The beginning was slow.
Trevor annoys the living sh*t out of me. The rudest kid ever.
Writing is alright.
Some of the characters are a little bland or without true personality

Positives:

Storyline is getting really good, especially the last few chapters.
So, the plot is 👌🏻
Lots of interconnected characters
This kind of adventure is great for anyone starting into fantasy/pirate type stories
I can completely see why this is YA and I believe younger people would love this story!!
(I like YA but it’s not always for me).

I wish this book/series all the best success! It’s a great plot and I may keep going at a later time.

Wow!!! Alonna Williams blew my mind with this book! It was easy to read, and captivated me from the very beginning. There are so many mysteries and secrets, and only some of them were revealed by the end of the book. I love Trevor's arrogance, even though he is a frustrating young boy sometimes, but it shows that he is confident in himself. Alonna did an amazing job showing the various sea-folk and brought pirates back to life! Arjan is definitely my favorite, and I cannot wait to learn more about and see more of him in the next book! What are you waiting for? Go read this!

With some more editing this could be quite good.

I love that this story takes advantage of all the different types of mythological aquatic creatures, but the story is hard to enjoy. Too much space is given to description and not enough to character development.

The base story is interesting, but the author is overly descriptive so it pulls you out every time a character or location is introduced.

It is simultaneously extremely fast paced and extremely slow. Again, I like the base story, but it needs a harsh editor to clean it up and streamline it so that it is easier to follow.

I have read a lot of fantasy in my day but I have yet to read a proper siren fantasy novel. This is a genuinely unique story and I am excited to read more about this story. Trevor is quite the character though and I am interested to see if he grows or stays a “brat”
