Si vis pacem, para bellum If you want peace, you should prepare for war. Light years away in distant space, the Aèllr rule a highly advanced and peaceful interstellar empire where violent conflict is a thing of the past. But when an Aèllr ship crash lands on Earth, their initial encounters with humans are fraught with fear and mutual misunderstanding. Peaceful explorers or warlike conquerors? As humankind wonders what to make of the alien incursion, first contact sets off a chain of events that leaves both species facing an uncertain and potentially disastrous future. Edmond Barrett is a native of the North-West of England and a resident of Dublin, Ireland. An amateur student of history, a fan of Terry Pratchett and low tech science fiction. He writes military science fiction and urban fantasy. Currently he is working on the final book of the Nameless War Trilogy - The Last Charge which is due for release in October 2014.
This first contact scenario is a complete and utter trainwreck. Not in the way it is written, but the way it happens. Strangely compelling in seeing how the further catastrophe is unfolding. Who would have thought it possible that the aliens are utterly incompetent in terms of how to deal with us humans. In two different first contact situations the aliens started to shoot first because of a panic reaction. I always thought that it would be us messing it up, not THEM! I think this book should be mandatory reading for anyone involved in first contact scenarios and planning. WE need to be prepared to deal with possible inept Aliens as well.
A new series from the author that gave us the great "The Nameless War" series that blew my socks of when I first read it, think Weber/Fox, i.e lots of action grounded in science as opposed to Star Wars magic.
Real good plot and his prose flows nicely, this man is a hidden diamond in the rough and I could not recommend his work higher if you like well-written Sci-Fi action.
I first read the nameless war series many years ago and was blown away. I’d been waiting and hoping since then there would be a sequel or something to find this start to a prequel series. Really interesting to see from both sides of the conflict in this book. A great start and looking forward to many more.
I have really enjoyed this novel. An interesting take on first contact that goes horribly wrong. A number of blunders and misunderstandings from both sides send both worlds tumbling towards an interstellar war.
Really enjoyed how things just slowly unravel due to the circumstances the characters find themselves in. Makes you think about how dangerous two cultures with no common ground meeting even when they have good intentions could be.
Hope the author writes another book in this series!
