Meh. Not bad, but the MC h is rather dense re: love and it was kind of obvious what Alicia would do at the end of the book. Also, the story arc is pretty much over, so no clue how this is more than a standalone story.
3, I’m content to end the series at vol 1, stars.

Original title: "Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen" Google translate: "Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord"
Reincarnating into otome (maiden) games has become a popular isekai sub-genre, with the success of My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! series of light novels and manga. This one is a different take on the same subject but with the villainess so overpoweringly competent instead of the lovable klutz that was Catarina Claes of My Next Life as a Villainess.
The main character may have reincarnated as the villainess but she isn't one, she's just persecuted of having such lustrous raven hued hair. She's also become so over leveled, that the main heroine of the game and the capture targets don't trust her at all.
It's a an entertaining read. I just really want see the main character overcome all these obstacles and have the life of peace she wants, and perhaps die of old age, which was denied to her in the old world. I also enjoy seeing her giving those spoiled and stuck up princes their just desserts.
Eumiella is such a great character. She has a dry sense of humor that balances the absurdity of how overpowered she is quite well. The other characters all either fear her or want to use her, which she is very aware of, and yet it doesn't deter her in the slightest. Still, I'm hopeful she'll find some connections that will show her the respect she deserves.
It is rare for me to film a video review of a manga and THEN write a review, but I guess there is a first time for everything (or at least a first in a few years LOL) as that is exactly what happened with this volume! (Note: The video will be up on my channel here in a few weeks!)
When I first finished this, I really didn't know what I felt. I knew I didn't dislike it, but I also didn't know if I wanted to keep going despite that I LOVE this manga cover! I think having the font behind Eumiella makes her stand out in a really cool way that makes me want to take notice. I really like it!
Moving on from the cover love though (LOL), I realized that despite two parts that I felt were a major info dump and then absolutely hating the heroine's party (the love interests are just plain dumb, and was irked every time they were on page, which is a first for me in feeling so strongly against a set of characters that aren't the bad guy. Also just to reaffirm, that's ONLY for the love interests. Alicia herself is fine.) I did actually enjoy this first volume!
What makes this series stand out from others in this genre is that Eumiella is all about leveling up and rising up to new challenges to help her abilities grow. She has ZERO interest in love or romance, which was quite a surprise for me personally because I only know of one villainess isekai where there is NO romance. Surprisingly, for her being a person who shows very little emotion (which made it a little hard for me to connect with her because I love my bright but naive villainesses LOL) you can really feel her excitement when she is realizing that despite being at level 99, she might be able to grow further or learn a new skill. I also appreciated her earnestness(?) to share her "hack" of how to level up quickly, but everyone feels like she is just "out to get them" when she's honestly not. LOL! She genuinely wants to help and doesn't understand what's wrong with it because to her it was pretty easy. LOL! I also liked how she is so OP that she has to think about what will create the LEAST damage or energy to a person or environment. LOL!
Overall, I liked this volume more than I thought I did! While I'm unsure about getting the next manga volume, I am VERY excited about the anime! I honestly feel this might be more of a story I'll enjoy through animation where I can hear the voices and therefore "hear" more of the humor in the story.
Would recommend it to those who are looking for a non-romantic villainess isekai with an interesting "villainess" who just wants to live a calm and peaceful life!
This was much more fun than I was anticipating. The heroine has a dry observational tone that really works to help the story stand out from its genre brethren, and while the art has some very specific foreshortening issues, its blank face game is second to none. It's just different enough from other villainess stories to make it work, and these days, that's saying something.

1. The FL is a leveling-up kuudere nerd who is COMPLETELY ADORABLE and everything about this story is very funny and I liked it very much.
2. If I have a complaint, it's that the story may meander a bit too much and not stick to a plot enough. That's not always a bad thing, but the story is not finished so the whole dragon arc feels a bit weirdly paced to me. It's all subjective though.
Notes: -The plot is bland. I've seen it all before. -The variation here is that instead of a cheerful, but bland mc villainess annoyingly stupid naive we have a stone-faced, bland mc villainess. -Although, Eumiella (where are they getting all these names???) is somewhat a smidge interesting. She has insight on some things but oblivious of others. -These characteristics were staple/tropes of the anime/manga characters I've encountered growing up (sometimes with childhood favorites) but they just irritate me now - especially if the character doesn't have anything redeeming. Inner adult: *baby me is finally growing up* Me: More like super annoyed since I know writers could do more even with an overused premise. -It is a little early to rate the whole story with just two volumes out but I'm not very impressed with things so far.
A college student dies and is reborn as a character in a video game. The series is amusing because the main character lacks common sense. Her name is now Eumiella Dolkness. She is obsessed with raising her level, and her gamer spirit pushes her to dizzying heights. She reaches the level cap in ten years, but no one believes she is at that level.
I enjoyed the book. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.
I'm a big fan of the anime, so I immediately had to get the manga! I'm probably going to read the light novels as well in some due time. There's just something very satisfying about how the people who are full of themselves get so humbly put in their place by her that you just keep rooting for her whether you want to or not. I think that it's only going to continue to get better. I look forward to it!
This was a relatively fun and tension-free read. If anything, Eumiella's deadpan expressions were both amusing and difficult to read. Thank goodness for her inner thoughts!
The story of a young lady who has levelled up to level 99 to avoid being seen as the villain is still pretty engaging for now. I'm curious to see how it'll develop and finish (if the duration of light novels is anything to go by!).
I normally wouldn't have chosen to read this book, but I've been into some fanfiction where the heroine is reincarnated as the villain, so this intrigued me. Anyway, regarding Alicia, she may see the hidden boss as a dark aura, but to still loudly accuse her of being the demon lord in public, that's just rude, no matter what background you come from.
