A merciless killer who will stop at nothing. And a detective with nothing left to lose.
When Detective Karen Hart hears a scream echoing out of beautiful Lincoln Cathedral one snowy evening, she is the first officer on the scene. In the chapel a man lies murdered, a bloody cross carved into his forehead.
The twisted killing sends this close-knit community into shock. And a note to the police from the murderer, signed by ‘The Cleanser’, confirms their worst fears: this sadistic slaying is the first of many. The ritual killings will never stop until Hart uncovers the murderer’s ungodly motive.
When early leads become dead ends, Karen starts to wonder if there’s a link to a rumoured conspiracy within police ranks—particularly when an abrasive new officer is assigned to the case. Could the key to catching ‘The Cleanser’ be dangerously close to home? Meanwhile, she is battling her own demons as she struggles to come to terms with the deaths of her husband and daughter.
In her toughest case yet, Karen will come closer than ever before to a dangerous truth. Can she put the pieces of the puzzle together before she’s stopped in her tracks?
This is the last one (so far) in the DS Karen Hart. A golden button to close the story, tieing up the story that has been developing in the background of Karen's work and life. I wasn't expecting a serial killer, so even better. For moments you hold your breath not knowing where this is going to go, and I'm finally getting used to knowing that there's going to be a plot twist and everything I'm sure of is going to be the other way around, but I still don't see it coming. Loved it!
This is the 5th book in the Detective Karen Hart Series by author DS Butler. I discovered this series at the end of last year and it was an instant hit for me. Great characters, exciting plots and so well written make this a must read for all fans of police procedurals.
Detective Karen Hart is first on the scene of a murder when she hears a scream and goes to investigate. A man’s murdered body lies in a chapel with a bloody cross carved into his forehead. A murderer known as ‘The Cleanser’ is on the loose and starts a series of brutal killings that appear to be a sadistic mission. Detective Karen Hart is on the case and there are hints and rumours that point to a police conspiracy within her colleagues. The case is a tough one with the added disruption of a very annoying senior officer.
This was an excellent read and had me reading late into the night unable to put it down. Exciting plot and the dialogue between the regular characters made this an enjoyable read.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Although the fifth of the Detective Karen Blackwell adventures, it was this reader’s first encounter and thus more a standalone crime mystery. The story begins with a couple out walking of an evening at a Christmas Market, unaware they are being watched. A scream from the Lincoln Cathedral begins the murder investigation with a macabre signature left marking the victim. As the investigation evolves, other issues, including possible police force corruption or a seemingly unsolvable car crash arise. A gripping police procedural with great characters and engrossing mystery that deepens as the danger and body count mounts. It’s an outstanding crime novel with a minimum four-star must-read rating. With thanks to NetGalley and the author for a preview copy for review purposes. All opinions expressed herein are freely given and totally my own.
Detective Karen Hart can't get a break. On her day off, she's strolling after dinner past the Lincoln Cathedral with her "boyfriend" Mike Harrington. It's somewhat of an idyllic setting at Christmas time with flakes falling. Both are oblivious to a man furtively tailing them. He refers to himself as the "Sparrow" and acknowledges in soliloquy fashion that he answers to the "Eagle" . Mike annoyingly continues his relentless pursuit in trying to interest her in group grief counseling ... she has made it quite clear that it is not her style or desire. Her husband, Josh, and daughter Tillie were killed in a car accident in which their vehicle was forced off the road. Their peaceful walk is interrupted by a blood-curdling scream from inside the church. Karen runs into the church to encounter the frantic witness, who points to the chapel. Wedged between the pews is a male corpse with strangle marks around his neck and a bloody forehead where a cross-like mark has been crudely gouged. Her senior, Inspector Morgan soon arrives and assumes control of the investigation. Due to the ritualistic manner of the killing there is immediate concern for a serial killer. The victim is Lloyd Nelson, a member of the cathedral choir. The immediate suspect is his wife Beverly's ex-husband, Brett Wharton ... who already was required by the family court to attend anger management classes. Also in consideration, was Lloyd's boss, Ross Blundell ... young , tall , arrogant and the good-looking owner of Sparks Software Design. Lloyd recently had an argument with his boss, when he would not willingly let him take credit for his innovations. One morning, an envelope is slipped under the door of Morgan's house. Not only is it addressed to Morgan, but it is signed "The Cleanser" It intimates that Nelson had many secrets along with the deplorable behavior of beating his wife, embezzling money, and he needed to be "cleansed" of his sins. Morgan was immediately removed from the case, and was to be replaced by a new team headed by D.I.Churchill. A known detestable, smarmy and condescending officer, with a suspicious past history. He , along with other officers were secretly being investigated by a major corruption inquiry board. In fact, part of the allegations concerned Karen dearly. There was consideration that evidence was tampered with at the scene of her family's fatal accident. Another converging thread of investigation and possible linkage involved the hit-an-run murder of 12 year-old Samuel Pickett, while riding his bicycle down an isolated road.. Then the bodies start dropping... next is Lauren Monro whose corpse was discovered by her sister Nina Brown.... in a similar fashion there were ligature marks on the neck and a cross gouged into her forehead. Next, Karen's old retired boss and friend DCI Shaw was murdered in an identical fashion. In spite of Churchil'ls condescending and belittling continual attack on Karen, she persists and deflty swims through the murky waters of clues and albis in an unflinching effort to seek justice. D.S.Butler weaves a masterful police procedural with multiple twists and unexpected reveals that culminates in an explosive denouement. Her compulsive pacing is complemented by her rich character development that is both multi-dimensional and plausible. It is sincerely doubtful anyone will guess the identity of the villain. This gripping narrative is told from the perspective of both Karen and the unidentified assassin. Although this is the 5th outing for D.S. Hart, this novel can be enjoyed as a standalone because of the author's seamless entry of necessary back story. Thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for providing an Uncorrected Proof of this riveting novel in exchange for an honest review. This is my fifty encounter with Detective Hart and will continue to eagerly await her next investigation. (at readersermains.com AND mysteryandsuspense.com)

On cold ground is the 5th book in the crime series featuring DS Karen Hart. Whilst out at the christmas markets with her boyfriend a dead body is discovered in the church. It looks to be the works of a serial killer but they cannot be sure. Karen is tasks to work with DCI Churchill who she had long suspected of police corruption. She can't seem to keep her personal feelings at bay.
So this is my first time reading any book in this series and for the life of me I can't decide why. The way Butler write is done so well with information trickling through from previous events without shoving it down our throats. It was great as I haven't read any of the previous books but I felt I could read this as a stand alone. Although I have my kindle currently set up and ready to start with book 1.
I find Karen to be a great protagonist. The whole way through I was constantly rooting for her to find the truth. I felt like I completely backed every thought and decision she made throughout the book. She is a great character she has her flaws and defo needs therapy but there seems to be sensible reasons for this issues. I really love her working relationships espically with Sophie who I have a huge girl crush on. If she ever gets a spin off I will totally obsessively follow her.
The case in this novel is quite interesting. We hear the killers point of view throughout the book and yet it was very difficult trying to pin down who it was. The method of the murders is brutal and it makes you question them throughout. I was a bit shocked at one point and I loved that I didn't see certain events coming. I thought I had it all worked out let's just say I was completely incorrect.
I raced through this book finishing in 2 sittings today and I am so glad I did. It is a huge page turner and I just needed to know how it was all going to turn out.
Would I recommend this book?
Duh of course I would. It has everything you want in a crime novel tension, suspense, murder, who done it, twists and turns. I love that we follow the investigation through Karen and Sophie. As well as the personal storylines that run along side. D.S Butler you have fan. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Katerina Diamond, Cara Hunter or Lisa Regan if you like any of those ladies you will love this book and honestly any fan of this genre. As this is book 5 I would say you can read it independently but I think starting at book 1 will build a bigger picture (don't be like me and read book 5 love it and decided that reading books 1 to 4 might be a good idea ha), also at the time of writing my review all of this series is avaliable on kindle unlimited as that's how I've got them all.
Thank you to Netgalley, amazon publisher's and D.S Butler for the advanced digital copy of on cold ground in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
This is the fifth in the Karen Hart detective series; it is the second one I have read. On a cold winter night, a body is discovered in Lincoln Cathedral. The victim has been strangled and a cross was etched into his forehead. After the murderer sends a note to Karen’s DI, her team is split up and a new DCI and team join Karen in the investigation. This new DCI seems to have it in for Karen. Could he be part of the corruption that has haunted the department? After a second body is found, it seems there may be a ritualistic serial killer at large. Is Karen in danger?
Told from two points of view, Karen’s and the killer’s, this book is fast paced, with tight writing and likable protagonists. Fans of British police procedurals will enjoy this story, as well as others in the series.
On Cold Ground by D.S. Butler is the 5th in the Detective Karen Hunt series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Thomas & Mercer, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) DS Karen Hart lost her husband Josh and her daughter Tilly in a car accident. She has recently discovered that it wasn't an accident, and that it had been covered up by the police, and one of them someone she had trusted. She is determined to find the corruption in the force. She works with DI Scott Morgan, DC Sophie Jones, and DC Rick Cooper.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) DS Hart is first on the scene to find a man laying dead in the chapel of Lincoln Cathedral, a cross carved into his forehead. He had been strangled. Her boss, DI Morgan, receives a note signed by "The Cleanser", which seems to signify a ritual killing.
Since Morgan cannot work the case because he has been singled out, DI Churchill takes over. Unfortunately he is on Hart's list of those she feel may be corrupt....and they are not getting along.
When a second body turns up, the team is trying to figure out how the victims are connected, but having no luck.
Meanwhile, since Morgan is not allowed to work the case, he is trying to find the driver responsible for a hit and run where a young boy was killed.
My Opinions:
I must admit to getting a little tired of the non-stop police corruption in these books. It was getting really annoying, but of course it had to end at some point.
The plot was good though, and because there were such large arrows aimed at a couple of people, I knew the perpetrator must be someone else.
I love Morgan, and Karen, and Rick. Sophie is rather annoying. Mike seems to be a non-entity, and I could do without him.
However, the books are a fast and easy read, with everything laid out in the end, so that not much thought is required. They are perfect reading for those times you finish a deep book, and couldn't possibly attack another. So I'm looking forward to reading about Karen Hart's next case.

On Cold Ground is the fifth book in the Karen Hart series and I think it is the best thus far. I got sidetracked with other British police procedurals and then realized that I completely missed this one. Good thing I discovered my error because On Cold Ground is terrific!
Karen Hart is out enjoying the holiday festivities when she hears a scream from the nearby cathedral. Although it is her night off, one of few, she runs toward the scream and discovers a dead male with a cross carved into his forehead. Unknown to Karen, she has been followed for the past few hours by a person known as "the sparrow" and as the case gets more involved and twisted, there is a hint of police corruption involving a car accident. SO much to keep up with and yet it all ties together and is brilliantly done so with Butler's deft writing skills. If you like British suspense then I highly recommend On Cold Ground which can be read as a stand alone, however, I encourage you to enjoy the entire series.
On Cold Ground by D. S. Butler was an exciting detective series I didn’t want put down. It was book 5 in the series and I read it fine as a stand-alone. It was well written and I recommend. The author skillfully wrote a good story that kept me guessing. Thanks Amazon Publishing via NetGalley.
Having read the first two in the series, I’d not read the last two, so I wondered if this would work for me but I’d no need to worry. This is an excellent tail that while it does hark back to what’s happened previously in the series it works perfectly well as a stand a lone too. . A body is found in the Morning Chapel in Lincoln Cathedral and Karen is first on the scene. What follows is a brilliantly executed tale that cleverly mixes the main and subplots. A totally unputdownable read
This is only my second DS Karen Hart. Since this is a police procedure story, I figure ~ find the killer and arrest him/her~ so was sure I was okay with the basic back ground info I got from House of Lies Book #4; although I normally prefer to follow a series in order.
This story starts with DS Karen Hart on a rare day off; she hears a scream from the cathedral. She investigates and finds a man dead in the Morning Chapel of Lincoln Cathedral. He has been killed and has a carving of a cross into his forehead. Soon after, she and her partner Mike Harrington get a letter from the killer signed “The Cleanser”. They are fearful more killing are about to happen. Does the killer know his prey? Is this the beginning of a series of ritual killing? Karen is given a hard time as to whether she can do her job. We know that her husband Josh and daughter Tilly were killed, so many believe she needs time off and grief counseling.
Story is told from the POV of Karen and the killer ~ code name Sparrow. This totally kept me guessing
I was into this story immediately. There are few other cases going on and I wasn’t sure if that is just what normally happens or of there were connected ~ Hmmm
This was a good story that kept me interested. It was a 3 star read (I personally believe 3 stars = good) However, it got more exciting in the last part and I loved the ending so 4 stars for me!! (BTW: 4 = Great!) 🌟🌟🌟🌟
I am looking forward to the next in this series! Personal Note: You have no idea how much I enjoy a story that doesn’t include nasty f-bombs and ugly profanity! Aww D.S. Butler ~ you are my hero!!!
Want to thank NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for this early release granted to me for an honest professional review. Australian Edition Publishing Release Date scheduled for March 25, 2021
I have tried to stay with this series as it has many of the elements I like in a crime thriller, but it also has me quite frustrated at times. I’m not really sure why, but having Kate only a Sergeant doesn’t work for me, perhaps the author thought being in the ‘middle’ just gave a different perspective. For me it just leaves her open to the vagaries of too many people My other slight niggle is the whole feel of the story, is this really happening in a provincial Lincolnshire police force? I suspect the author might be writing with an American audience in mind. Finally I quite like ‘my detectives’ to be at least better than average, if not exceptional, but the author has Kate making stupid mistakes and she is fairly clueless a lot of the time. The story was OK and there is a satisfactory, if long winded, conclusion and it tidies up the corruption theme that has been running through the previous books. If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for an advance copy of On Cold Ground, the fifth novel to feature DS Karen Hart of the Lincolnshire Police.
Karen is enjoying a rare day off when she hears a scream from the cathedral, a man has been founded murdered in the chapel with a cross carved into his forehead. Then DI Morgan receives a letter from the killer, signed The Cleanser, which hints at more to come. Are they hunting a potential serial killer? Karen’s job is made more difficult by the arrival of the unpleasant DCI Churchill to take over the case and the lack of progress in the Force’s ongoing corruption investigation.
I thoroughly enjoyed On Cold Ground which is an engrossing procedural with a few interesting and unexpected twists. It is told from two points of view, Karen and the unidentified killer, referred to by the code name Sparrow. For once I enjoyed this juxtaposition as Sparrow is no run of the mill killer as he has another agenda. His point of view is engaging and absorbing and compares with Karen trying to catch him and meeting opposition at every turn, mostly in the form of DCI Churchill who seems to delight in thwarting and belittling her.
The plot isn’t overly complicated- work out the motive, find the killer and arrest him. Easier said than done with little in the way of forensics, or any kind of clues. It is, however, absorbing reading with this plot line and the corruption case that has been part of the entire series still bubbling away in the background. The big action scene at the end takes a bit of swallowing but it’s exciting and fitting. I like the easy, clear writing style that makes it all simple to understand and follow.
On Cold Ground is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Detective Sergeant Karen Hart, first on the scene of a gruesome murder in the Morning Chapel, a small chapel within Lincoln Cathedral. The body of a man, Lloyd Nelson, bore ligature marks across the front of his neck. And the figure of a cross, carved into his forehead, suggested some manner of a ritualistic killing.
As Karen investigates, a letter purportedly from the killer [signed “The Cleanser”] indicates that this is the first of many killings. Soon enough, there’s another killing, carried out in the same way and with the cross cut into the victim’s forehead. And then a letter left on the doorstep of the lead investigator causes a shuffle in assignments and brings the difficult Detective Inspector Churchill to the Lincolnshire Police and splits up the investigating team.
The officers, caught up in investigating the serial killer murders, are also involved in the investigation of a hit-and-run involving a young bicyclist, hit by a car and left by the side of the road to die as the motorist drove away. And there’s still the hint of corruption within the department.
Is there a conspiracy within the police ranks? Will The Cleanser strike again before the police find him? And will the conspiracy claim more officers before they expose the corruption at last?
Fifth in the Detective Karen Hart series, this intriguing police procedural brings well-developed, believable characters into a complex plot. There is sufficient backstory for readers new to the series for “On Cold Ground” to work as a stand-alone, but with several plotlines coming from previous books, readers may want to start at the beginning of the series.
As in previous books, Karen continues to try to come to terms with the death of her husband, Josh, and daughter, Tilly, several years earlier. This backstory gives depth to the character; readers may find themselves empathizing with Karen as the story unfolds. Time, as they say, helps; however, she now seems a bit compulsive in her determination to prove the involvement of someone at the station.
There are several unexpected plot twists that readers may not see coming; some surprising revelations change things for many of the characters involved in the telling of the tale. Readers who enjoy police procedurals as well as fans of the series will find much to appreciate here.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this eBook from Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley #OnColdGround #NetGalley
Let me begin by saying that the story line of this book took a turn that I personally did not appreciate.
Aside from that, it is a pretty good book. The characters are well developed and interesting (some more than others). All in all, it is a good addition to the series.
I want to thank NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for forwarding to me a copy of this book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
This series is addictive. The author builds suspense effectively as DS Karen Hart tries to solve murders while doggedly attempting to root out corruption at all levels in her police department. Solid police procedural series worthy of a look.
On Cold Ground is the fifth instalment in the Detective Karen Hart series, set in and around the cathedral city of Lincoln. The prologue begins with DS Hart off duty and spending time with her boyfriend, Mike Harrington, who she had been seeing for 6 months. It's bitterly cold and they're strolling through the stalls at Lincoln Christmas Market not realising a man has been following them for the past 3 hours. Referred to as "Sparrow" he watches every move they make as ordered by his boss "Eagle". He spots them walking more briskly now towards the cathedral and refers to Karen as the dangerous one out of the pair. While walking past the west front of the cathedral Karen and Mike hear a bloodcurdling scream. It seemingly came from a middle-aged woman who Karen recognises as Eunice Greene, and she tells her that there is a body in the chapel. She had been sitting at her desk in the cathedral collecting fees from those who wished to explore inside as it helped with upkeep. Karen enters the Morning Chapel, while a shaken Eunice stays outside, and finds the body between the first and second pews. It was the corpse of a man with brown hair, greying at the temples. His forehead was a bloody mess; he had been mutilated and a cross etched into his skin hinting at a possible ritualistic killing. A ligature mark snaked around his neck indicating he was strangled. They soon discover that the body is that of 46-year-old Lloyd Nelson, a member of the amateur cathedral choir who practice there every Tuesday. Trust Karen to be in the right place at the right time on a leisure day to be the first on the scene of a gruesome and bloody murder. A short time later, DI Morgan, the lead investigator on the case, finds an envelope on his doormat that had been hand-delivered seemingly through the night.
Addressing him by name and referencing the handiwork at the chapel, it suggests Lloyd had many dirty secrets, such as beating his wife and embezzling money, and that now he had been cleansed of his sins, before being signed as "The Cleanser". Due to this Morgan must be removed from the investigation and Karen and PC Sophie Jones are assigned a new team with DCI Churchill at the helm, an insufferable, arrogant man who may be one of the corrupt officers that DS Hart has been looking into in a Major Corruption Enquiry that is still ongoing. It is believed these corrupt cops conspired to run Josh, Karen's husband, off the road killing both he and her daughter Tilly. There is also a current investigation into a hit-and-run where a young cyclist, 12-year-old Sam Pickett, was travelling home and left to die alone by the roadside. Then another body is found; this time of 27-year-old Laurel Monroe discovered by her sister at a motel. Can Hart and her team find the connection between these two victims and stop this ruthless serial killer? DS Butler has penned the most gripping and addictive instalment of the series so far and the complex, multilayered plot with several different but often converging strands holds you captive throughout. From beginning to end I was riveted by the intrigue, suspense and twists and turns aplenty and the liberal misdirection meant I couldn't figure out the serial killer's identity. With regards to the killer’s case, there is little in the way of forensics or solid evidence, the corruption case is still playing out and Karen continues to struggle with the loss of her husband and daughter. Told from Karen and the unidentified killer's perspectives, this is a fast-paced and enthralling read with an exciting, explosive and action-packed conclusion. Highly recommended.
A detective story set in and around Lincoln, in the Uk. The main detective is Karen Hart . It starts with a body being discovered in Lincoln cathedral . It took me around a third of the book to get into the story, it did not really grab me and the converstaions between characters were rather lacklustre. I did not particularly care for any of the characters either. Beside the murders, there are a couple of other stories running through the book, the death of a young boy on a bike in a hit and run and an investigation into police corruption. These seemed to not to connect, though as the book progressed, the relevance of each became more apparent. As I got more into the book, I liked it better and grew to like the characters more as well. Although the conversations were still somewhat mundane at times, this did not irritate me as much ! By the last few chapters the book became a real page nturner and I couldn't put it down . This is number 5 in the series and at first I was probibly at a disadvantage that I have not read any of the others (with little knowledge of the individual detectives) but as the book progressed this became less of an issue and the book is fine to read as a stand alone. Now having complted the book, my opinion is that it is a great read and I shall look out for others by this author Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
On Cold Ground by D.S. Butler was a fabulous read that had me totally gripped from the start.
This is the 5th book in the series featuring DS Karen Hart, set in Lincolnshire and I picked up the series with Don't Turn Back (book 3) which I also thoroughly enjoyed. The fantastic plot-line and brilliant characters made On Cold Ground a superb tale that held me captive throughout.
With innumerable twists and turns, guessing the identity of the perpetrator was nigh on impossible and the swift pacing meant there was no room for boredom or tedium. It was an impeccably crafted story and the dead ends, and absences of possible motives at the beginning of the story when the hunt for a sadistic killer purportedly known as ‘The Cleanser’ started, all helped towards creating the tense atmosphere. D.S.Butler weaves a masterful police procedural that culminates in an explosive denouement. Her rich character development is both multi-dimensional and plausible. This tale should not be missed as it is a fantastic continuation of an excellent series.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Amazon Publishing UK via NetGalley at my request, and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
This is the fifth book in the DS Karen Hart detective series by D.S. Butler.
I’ll tell you one thing. I definitely found a new series to follow. As soon as I finished this I went out and bought the first three books of the series.
This was very well written. I could see myself in Karen’s place having to deal with all the nonsense that goes on in this book and found the entire experience fascinating. There is just so much to like her. I love Karen and her boss DI Morgan really resonated with me too. I can’t wait to read a book where they really get to work together. This one has Karen as sort of a lone woman getting the job done even though the new team that comes in is blocking her at every turn.
That DCI Churchill, dang, hate him. What a good foil for Karen! He is just a butt head in order to be a butt head and have control. I wouldn’t be surprised if he popped up in future books too.
The cast here is just stellar. I felt like I was watching a movie and just couldn’t get enough of it. Karen just felt real and I felt her pain just going through the normal every day things in life.
Just so much to love about this series I can’t get enough.
Highly recommended. Excellent book!
If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
Gripping. Absorbing. Engrossing. Unputdownable. The characters are all so believable. The misdirection is so believable. The way this story unfolds keeps you guessing for such a long time. At around 80% my earlier vague supposition of the killers identity was strengthened although due more to clever writing than to any actual evidence. Of course, as it turned out I was completely wrong. Later there were pointers in another direction. Yes, the name had been mentioned before but previous evidence and actions didn't convince. Wrong again. Finally a confession, well two actually but neither can be prosecuted. Then just when you think it's all over Karen receives irrefutable evidence against all the corrupt officers and also proof of who was involved in the hit and run.
This was the first book I've read in the Detective Karen Hart Series, but I've already bought and downloaded book 1 of the series. I thought this worked fine as a stand alone - there is a history with some of the characters but not anything that lowered my enjoyment of the book.
At an evening holiday festival with her boyfriend, Karen Hart is first on the scene of a murder. Various things seem to indicate the work of a serial killer, and when the lead on the case is threatened, a group of outside investigators is brought in.
I liked the mystery, and I also felt like this was a good police procedural - there was a lot of detail work and cooperation.
I had a hard time putting it down, which is always a sign of a good mystery! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for once again helping me discover a new author.
Netgalley eARC. It's Christmas week, but DCI Karen Hart is facing a challenging new case. Three victims, strangled with a cross carved into their fore heads She and her team can find neither connections or motives for the disturbing crimes, despite the "Cleanser" leaving letters with false claims. Working with a new difficult supervisor Karen begins to feel that the answer is "closer than you think." This is a solid police procedural focusing on the methodical following of leads and checking out possible culprits. No graphic language or violence was used which is a plus for this reader and many others. Karen and her team are well developed some more likable than others but all believable. The plot kept me turning pages until the surprising reveal. Solid read.
absolutely brilliant 😍 I enjoy all these book but this one had me especially hooked as I couldn't work out who the killer was I had so many theories and suspects but each one was slowly ruled out until I felt like there was no one left. I was holding my breathe through the ending and think it was done amazingly 😍 I can't give this series any more praise apart from saying its fantastic
